This was our family's first trip to Sun Outdoors Virginia. We originally booked an 8-night stay but decided to leave a day early because we had run out of things to do. The campground is in a fairly secluded location, so entertainment options are limited, especially on hot days. Cape Charles is about 15 minutes away and is a quaint, charming town with a few boutiques and three ice cream shops. Many of the shops and restaurants have limited hours, and the dining options tend to be more upscale than family-friendly, which made it a little harder to find meals that appealed to our younger kids. Virginia Beach is about an hour away if you're looking for more activities, but keep in mind you'll pay about $15 each way to cross the bridge-tunnel, adding roughly $30 in tolls to every round trip. The campground itself is very large. Our kids loved the pools, although they close at 8:00 p.m. The jumping pillows were also a big hit, but they have very little shade, making them difficult to enjoy during the hottest part of the day. They also close at 8:00 p.m. The private beach is a nice feature. Since it's on the bay, the water is shallow and calm with no waves, making it great for younger children. However, the beach could benefit from more regular grooming. There was quite a bit of debris in the sand, and daily raking like many public beaches do would make a noticeable improvement. One concern we had was the lack of rule enforcement. Staff members were frequently driving around in golf carts, but we rarely saw them addressing unsafe behavior. There were many clearly underage kids driving golf carts and riding around at high speeds with little regard for pedestrians or cyclists. My husband was nearly hit by an intoxicated golf cart driver while riding his bike, and my son was knocked completely off his bike by a child on a motor scooter. We also witnessed a group of young girls parked beside the pool fence openly smoking marijuana. While I don't expect an overly strict campground, a greater focus on safety would have made us feel much more comfortable. Our campsite was clean, level, and well maintained. One thing we found odd was that there were no fire rings. It appeared they may have been removed, which led many campers to create their own fire pits directly on their sites. That didn't seem like the safest solution. Depending on your site's location, mosquitoes and other bugs can also be quite bad, particularly near taller grass or standing water. The multiple dog parks were a nice amenity. However, one of the waste bag stations remained empty until our sixth day, and many owners apparently didn't bring their own bags. As a result, there was quite a bit of dog waste left throughout the park. We also noticed several people leaving their dogs unattended inside the dog parks while they returned to their campsites. The on-site café was convenient and offered a good option for grabbing a meal without having to cook, especially during the hottest part of the day. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Sun Outdoors Virginia, and I would still recommend it to others, particularly families with younger children looking for a relaxing camping trip. For our family, though, we found ourselves getting bored after about five days due to the limited nearby attractions. If we return to the area, we'd likely choose a campground closer to Virginia Beach where there are more activities to keep the kids entertained. read more

We had an amazing first stay at Sun Outdoors Cape Charles. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us and made sure we had a great trip. The greeting we received from the friendly bearded gentlemen at the gate station set the positive tone and made us smile. The sites are relatively flat and took minimal effort to level our camper. Good water pressure and a solid Wi-Fi signal. Our initial site had a view of the pond and the bay. Unfortunately, there was a small electrical issue the first morning of our visit. I called maintenance and within three minutes they arrived and began trouble shooting the issue. Very friendly and professional. The team (Cody & Steve) worked to identify the issue (faulty breaker inside the travel trailer parked beside us). We understood their frustration and offered to move sites if that would work. The team quickly got us a new site in a different loop and within 30 minutes we were packed and set up on the new site, which had amazing views of the bay. The maintenance team stopped back that evening and the next day to check on us, which was very impressive. Amenities were great from the adult only pool beside the water and the family pools to the fun activities planned each day. The general store was well stocked and the café had a nice range of menu items, including huge scoops of Hershey's ice cream. The only minor minus we encountered is the bayside beach is lackluster and not inviting to lounge on, but the pool made up for that. There is a shuttle that will take you into town and runs on a regular/as needed basis. Walt is the man in the shuttle and is more of your personal tour guide. Give him a call and he will take you where you need to go! Overall, it was an amazing visit and we will definitely be back and hope to see the amazing staff again next year. read more

Had an amazing time this summer here. Was my first time camping and had a ball. It was everything I expected. We rented a cabin which was small but so thankful for it because it was so hot outside and we had AC with the cabin. The accommodations like bathroom & shower were always clean. We played putt putt golf, and swam for hours. We rented a golf cart to make it much easier. Will be returning next summer for sure read more

Having camped here previously when this was Cherrystone (20 years ago), I had high expectations which were met. Starting with our cabin: very accommodating considering it's just a place to sleep and prep some meals. Impressive shower, hot water and ac. We had ants in our kitchen which we didn't anticipate but it is outdoors camping. We put out some ant traps that hopefully help with the next residents. Also bought a fly swatter and made quick work of the flies. Facilities, the bathhouses were all clean and tidy each time we used one. Restaurant, general store and arcade were all nice as well as the laundry room. Docks were very nice and beaches were okay. Can't help Mother Nature and seaweed, but def not a bust. For a cleaner beach, there is one at the neighboring community of Cape Charles. Staff, all helpful and respectful. Not irritated to be at work it seemed. Staff at registration wasn't the most welcoming but everyone else was. The teens running events and craft activities were interactive and seemed to enjoy their jobs. One of the only cons I have is the lack of mosquito treatment on site. I got tore up a few days in a row outside by the picnic table. Yes I gets it's marshy but in the past they've done a much better job fumigating. Overall, a very enjoyable experience, that took me back to my childhood, and allowed me the experience to take my child. The vast activities, pools, family atmosphere and accommodations made the campground enjoyable. ****edit...I saw some previous posts about the gras not being mowed (we saw them mowing daily), store hours being short (closed at 4pm) but was open until 8 or 9 while we were there. I even showed up 4 minutes before closing and the staff helped me find what I needed without complaint. This was a huge plus for me. It's my First time Camping here and going through a Tunnel under the ocean to get here was quite the experience. I Really enjoyed the Beautiful sunsets and the view. * Camping Sites: Gravel and Pavement, if you get the ones near pier 1 or 2 they are gravel, and they are semi easy to Pull a 5th wheel Camper into and get out since the front campers are blocking your way to get out although, The front spots are easy to pull into. Over where the Pier 3 and Pier 4 are mostly Paved, * Fishing: 24/7 if you want to fish all day- and night you can. There is a * Adult Pool: It is Open on (Fri-Sat-Sun only) Opens at :11am closes at : 8pm) it is away from the Main Pool, the Adult Pool seems very quiet I would've taken pictures of the pool but you have to be 21 to enter it even with no 21+ things in it. There are no Hot Tubs. * Cafe : is semi- expensive, i didn't go in there because i Cooked my own Food. * The playground: 2 Pillow jump pads, near a playground with slides and monkey bars and there are 2 Softball Nets, Near the Pavilion. * Golf Carts - that you can use and there are paved roads to get you into the park, * The Bathrooms: They are very well maintained, there is a Laundry Room behind the Cafe'. * What i Would like to see: A Expansion near the Gravel Sites, and I would Like to see the Beach to be a little bit Cleaner from all the algae and things like that. We stayed at a premium tent site a few weeks before Memorial Day and we absolutely enjoyed every bit of our stay. Over our two days every single staff interaction was wonderful and the bathhouse remained extremely clean. While we didn't get to make use of the pools (due to us being a bit early in the season) we did make frequent use of their many beach accesses and they were awesome! We also found the camp store well stocked, the cafe food very good, especially the breakfast! The supplied furniture (table and four chairs) was high quality, the tent site well-sized and the neighbors were all very cordial and respectful. Also the trash dumpsters were emptied frequently which we appreciated. All said, solid 4.5 experience for our stay. read more

We had to cancel our reservation for this coming summer. We have been waiting over 2 months for a partial refund less the fees and still have not gotten anything but a run around!!! Corporate is totally useless.... Never will use this companies campgrounds!!!! read more

Absolutely disappointed in this location. Sites are tight/ too close together. No fire pits. The beach was nasty. Overall the "resort" is not well taken care of. Lots of pools but water was super warm and didn't open until 11. One of the employees was in the adult pool area with her feet on the table. Weird to be handed a brochure with how you are expected to behave. Proper behavior should be a given. Clearly, those instructions are needed here as there was a couple here who think they can just move others belongings and sit on other people's things because they feel entitled. There isn't much, if anything, to do around the area. The few shops/ restaurants are mostly closed. The closest Walmart is 40 minutes away. You need to drive at least an hour to get to any type of civilization. Unless you just want to sit at a campsite and that's it, avoid this place at all costs. read more

We stayed during 4th of July holiday break. Lots of upgrades since our last visit a few years ago although what I think is missing is a true beach that's swimmable. The beaches are somewhat muddy and probably nothing they can do about it. A food and bar restaurant at the end of one of the docks would be a nice touch during the beautiful sunsets. Maybe I'm comparing too much but still a very nice park if those amenities aren't a necessity. The pools they have are outstanding for kids and adults. read more

Let's start with the good: clean bathrooms, lots of pools. Negative: no fire pits - people just pick a spot in the grass. The sites are literally on top of each other - person behind us waved through their window at us as we were in our camper. The beach is nasty, stayed at a camp ground down the street last summer and their beach was gorgeous! Check in closes at 7 pm and no directions what to do after that time. People 3 sites down arguing and swearing about chores at home. This is like a friggin ghetto campground advertised as a resort!!! We were going to stay an extra night but scratch that!! Our time here was absolutely amazing!!! Brittany Morris is the manager and she took the BEST care of our family. Every staff member was friendly and the whole place is impeccable. There are SO many amenities within the grounds! it's got 4 whole piers and multiple private beaches. Even a special dog beach!!!! The general store is well stocked, the food at the cafe is great, they have an arcade, laundry, putt-putt course, multiple pools, & golf cart rentals (DEF worth it!). The surrounding towns are idyllic and make sure you get the Bayside nachos from Aj's in cape Charles- Walt, the wonderful shuttle driver provided by the campground will be happy to give you a ride and a knowledgeable tour all in one! I can't recommend visiting here enough!!!!!. The manager's (Brittany Morris) obvious love for this place, her job, and her customers trickles down to every other employee and then shows up again in the neighborly culture of the guests. They are no professional at all they called me the day before my trip that I booked months ago to tell me I'm banned from there because I posted about how crappy the firework show was last year. The activities offered were nice. That's about it. Most staff were not friendly. The grounds had alot of trash & discarded items laying around. The adult only pool is nasty. No bathroom close for adults who were drinking alcohol all day. The beach is not a real beach experience like the website hints at. It is expensive for the experience. No fire rings at sites. We use to love this place. Since become a sun outdoor we only could come one other time due it being so expensive. I understand all the amenities make the price go up, but charging a lock-in site fee is crazy, charging to bring your own golf cart is also crazy. If I'm picking a site it's because that's the best site available for my family not because I suddenly want them to change it last minute. Rented a cottage and spent about $100 per night for a linen package. Arrived and found beds unmade and linen package included very cheap sheets, NO pillows, and NO towels, so we ended up spending about $50 at local Dollar General for basic necessities. Only enough hot water to allow about one shower per hour. Found a dead earwig and a live spider. Kitchenette only had a few paper plates and disposable forks, spoons and knives. NO cups or bowls. The fire alarm kept chiming through our stay, even though they stopped by to fix it. Really small everything. No decor whatsoever. For about $250 a night in the off-season, we expected more and would have done better in a house rental or hotel. The best thing I can say is that the staff was quite friendly. read more

Stayed here for a week and it was ok. The sites were nice but flooded easily. It rained all but one day and the winds were crazy. We ruined another pop-up again this year. The winds just started out of nowhere. The crabbing and clamming were horrible. Not much luck with either. I don't think we'll be back again read more

Was there early June for two weeks. Well kept place. The bad parts; Bait Shop and General Store hours were atrocious. Bait shop closed two days a week a General Store closed at 4 during week, I think 6 on Friday or Saturday. That big of a campground should have better services hours, after all, you pay a daily resort fee. That brings me to the other topic, price. You reserve a site at $xxx rate, then they add a daily resort fee. Why not just include resort fee in daily rate. Rates double on Friday and Saturday and triple on holidays. Also, why do you have to pay a fee to lock in a site you reserved. Private campgrounds do not do either of those. Beaches are nice, adult pool was nice. And piers are plenty big, however, be cautious, pier One railing is not well attached on west side. read more

I use to camp at the past owners park Cherrystone, Since sun outdoors took over I went once. The family feel is gone expect group camping because you have little space between neighbors. It was great when I was able to moor my boat in the water overnight now that was taken away. But here is the worse, price is based on how busy they are. They want the highest bidders here trying to be a high end resort but sorry you get 3 of 5 here. Pools and wading pool get high ratings. Full hook up available, many sites flood during rain storm, camp store is very well stocked. But not a place if you like tranquility. Kids and teenager friendly. read more

Camp here a few times when it was cherrystone campground. Recently went there for 5 nights and can tell you we won't be back at all. Started by us getting there at around 11:30 and being told that check-in isn't until 2 o'clock but your more then welcome to park in the waiting lot unhook and walk in to use the amenities. Which is nice but we have a campsite which doesn't have anyone in it because checkout is at 11o'clock. Was told that they have 700 sites here and that they have a lot of check-ins. In the 14 years of camping I say about 2-4 times I actually had to wait to get it to my site and most of them times are because someone was still on the site beach's Ethel had late checkouts. The grass looked like it hasn't been cut in about 5-6 days and wasn't cut the entire time we were there. Pools are nice but they need come updates and repaired especially in the kids area. Note the pics I posted. Spoke to a gentleman there and he said that them pieces have been broken since he's been there. Their definitely letting this place go to trash. Several complaint from others white there. Really hope they change the way they run there place of business. read more
