Let's start with the good. This campground is located about 5 miles down a heavily wooded road to the point you will begin to think you've gone the wrong way. At night, these woods can honestly, be a little creepy, but they're still very beautiful. There is an abundance of wildlife to see as well - especially deer - so be careful when driving, no matter the time of day or night. We also saw foxes, raccoons, possums, deer of all ages and genders - including two bucks fighting during one experience, baby/tiny crabs, live oysters, etc. So if you're looking for wildlife, this is definitely a great spot to find and see it! On the weekends they do breakfast and lunches at the lodge. Our first Saturday here, we were unaware of this and headed right upstairs to the billiards room. One of the female staff came up and got us to see if we were hungry. She went out of her way to get us and that definitely left a wonderful impression. The lunch was great, that seems to be an every Saturday affair which is super nice. Breakfast seems to be every Sunday morning starting at 9am. The bad part about this is that there's no notices or announcements or anything to let you know of these things going on. So that's a small negative. I feel like maybe this should be included with your check in package so you're aware of these get together going on. Now, speaking of the billiards/game room, this is actually where we spent a majority of our time. There are two pool tables, 2 table tennis set ups, and 2 air hockey tables. One of the pool tables and one of the air hockey tables do not work. The one air hockey table has been broken since we first came here. The pool table however was damaged by children on our last Saturday at this campground. All the games are free to play and you're unsupervised. The stuff is old and it's not in perfect shape but it's there and it worked. So it was so sad to see that a family came in there and allowed this destruction. When we called the rangers, they were so upset to hear about it. I hope that they're able to put up a camera, at least at the entrance of the lodge so they know whose coming and going from now on. We have learned that this campground does not get much funding and frankly, it shows. This campground though really deserves more funding. The staff are great and the park has so much potential. It's beautiful here! Unlike what you might expect from pictures or map view, there is no beach or swimming available unless the pool is open. The "beaches" are more along the lines of swamp land and marshes more then anything. You can go oyster fishing here as there are tons of them! Fishing is best to do during high tide only. There is a fishing pier that is kind of lopsided but seems otherwise okay. There's also a boat ramp and appears to have once been floating docks. The boat ramp can only be used during high tide because otherwise it's just a mud pit with absolutely no water. The floating docks have been blocked off as they're just a complete mess. I'm not sure if a storm damaged them or what but they're in awful shape. There are two playground at this campground and I wouldn't trust my kids on either of them. One is by the pool and then another is by the cabins. Swings are held up by rope or are broken due to age, wood looks old and discerning, just for example. It just looks dangerous and run down. There's no volleyball set up and the mini golf is a disaster. The carpets are missing on most of them, they're all straight shots, and most of the side rails are non-existent. We never would have known it was closed if we hadn't come across the fallen over, hand written sign that just sits propped up against one of the holes. We had mentioned in the office in front of a male staffer that we had intended to play mini golf but he had made no mention of it being closed or that it was in basically completely unusable condition. As for the pool, it was offseason so it was closed but it was still full of pool water which considering the weather, if it's not emptied and winterized soon, there won't be a pool next year. Moving around the campground, most of the lots have no power (as in the power isn't working or shut off) so you can't park there. I'd say this goes for about half the camp sites. As for full hookups, there's maybe 6 sites total. All the rest are just electric and water hook ups. The good news though is that a majority of the sites are pretty level and there are several sites in the wooded area that are just gorgeous! Over all, the scenery is beautiful, the wild life is amazing, the staff is very friendly, but the campground could use a lot of work. The campground is run down, out dated, and just needs some upgrades and maintenance done. I wouldn't recommend this park at this time. We really hope that they get funding and can improve the place because we'd love to come back in a few years and see it doing better. read more

The views are nice, and the place is generally very peaceful. However, it is also fairly run down and based on conversations with other campers, there's no plan to improve it. Many site's hookups are broken (like 50% or more), and their best full hookup sites were flooded to the point of being closed. Seems like it was once a great spot and has declined in the last 20 years. There are also *lots* of bugs. We were there in October and got eaten alive - so I can't imagine what it's like when mosquitoes and flies are in full swing. There's also not much to do in the immediate area - you have to drive at least 30 minutes away to do pretty much anything. So it's not a great spot if kids are involved. The guy working the gatehouse called us while we were en route, and was palpably irritated that we wouldn't be arriving until 5:30 because he usually leaves at 5. Really? All of that said, if you're after a sleepy, quiet place and aren't bothered by biting insects, it could be for you. read more

This is a hidden charm with lots of potential. Beautiful views right on the water, spacious campsites and super friendly campers. One of our kids lost a gold chain and someone with a metal detector spent hours finding it. The camp store desperately needs some stock. There is no kayaking unless you bring your own and drag it through marsh to get to the bay that leads out to the ocean. Pretty strong currents so it's probably not a good idea. The pond has been taken over by snapping turtles and geese so that is off limits. Bath house was adequate. But if you are into great views and can keep content without a lot of amenities I highly recommend this place. Oh last thing if you want to keep your kids off their phone this place is perfect there's no service and WiFi only at the club house. read more

We booked our weekend stay and paid for it ahead of time. They called the day before to confirm, and we told them we'd be arriving around 1am. They promptly told us that WE CAN'T ARRIVE THAT LATE because they "keep quiet hours until 8am." And then they wouldn't refund our payment for that night! So now we have to pay for a service we cannot receive because of a rule they didn't disclose. UNBELIEVABLE. Never going there again. read more

We were just passing through today but we have stayed here in the past. Fantastic park. Friendly people. Very well kept. It's so peaceful and quiet here. One can fish, go crabbing for blue crab and go clamming. Also great sunsets. One of our favorite parks in the Thousand Trails system. read more

I stayed at Virginia Landing because I had received a "free" membership to Thousand Trails Campground club with the purchase of my camper. Let me explain how Thousand Trails is not even worth the "Free" price tag. First, I will describe the quality and condition of the campground: It is pathetic. It is nothing more than a grass field with campers packed in like sardines. The Thousand Trails Website gives you a false impression that it is near the coastline and beach. It is not. It is on the marshy inlet called "Hog Island Bay", and there isn't even access to that. There is supposedly a fishing pier, but in my one night stay I could not seem to find it, and I wonder if it even exists. To get to an actual coast, as in the ATLANTIC OCEAN, you must get in the car and drive at least an hour. There are bugs everywhere. Giant horse flies that bite. They supposedly have a miniature golf course, but as you can see by the pictures that other reviewers have left on google, it is again, pathetic. Bathrooms and facilities are disgusting. Everything about this place is run down. Pool, miniature golf course, welcome shack, gates, roads, campsites... you name it. I can honestly say that this camp ground has no redeeming qualities. Secondly, I will describe my experience with the Virginia Landing Campground staff, along with the Thousand Trails customer service: The quick story is: The neighbor camper must have had mental issues, did not like dogs, and threatened to slit both me and my dogs throat (there was no negligence by me or the dog, and all rules and common courtesy were followed). The police came, and a restraining order was arranged. The only accommodations the campground would do was to make me, the victim, pack up and move camp sites. Mind you this is just a giant field, so the guy was still within eyesight. I told them that that was unacceptable, and that I would be taking my business elsewhere. They refused to reimburse me for the site. I followed up with Thousand Trails. They acted concerned at first, but let me tell you, it is all an act. They do not care about their patrons one bit. LESLEY BLACKWELL was the person they assigned to this case. She did absolutely nothing. After numerous empty promises of returned phone calls and reconciliation, I finally got to speak with her (3 months later). She told me that she honestly felt that I had been treated fairly. Her response was "they offered for you to move your site, it was your decision to leave the campground". I strongly disagree. Please, do not fall into the Thousand Trails Trap. Luckily my membership was "free", but trust me, their membership isn't even worth $0. I would have much rather spent my summer vacation at a paid campground with decent facilities, and a general concern for their customers. The campgrounds included in their package are horrible, and their incompetent staff is scum. Please do not patronize them. read more

Worst place to go to with children!!!!!! The "beach" water is a swamp that produced horse flies bigger than butterflies! That bite and attack you! We were there less than 24 hours I set up our pop up at 6pm and although the site was very pretty and flat the killer bugs were terrible. No one was outside it was a ghost town. We went to swim in the pool and it was closed already. I needed ice and had to drive all the way to the ranger who was not there, I called the ranger station 6 times 3 before 10pm and 3 the next morning before we packed up and left at 8am! We had planned on staying 2 weeks but left with 30 plus bug bites each and a headache! PARENTS BEWARE DO NOT TRAVEL HERE WITH YOUNG KIDS!!!!!!! read more

This campground was a sparkling showplace in its heyday. Now it is dated and has some definite problems (no sewer hookups for instance), but the natural beauty, wildlife, tranquil setting, and extremely friendly and helpful staff more than make up for that. Jeannie, the manager; Nancy, the night ranger, "Ma" and Jim, the grounds keepers, and all of our neighbors made our month-long stay one of the best we have ever had at a Thousand Trails site. We were met at the gate and guided to a beautiful spot on the bay, where we went clamming and shrimping for our supper. Jim brought us free firewood and laid it at our fire ring any time we needed it. There was no organized worship service on the campus; but they gave us permission to start one, and we had great fellowship in one of the buildings by the boat ramp every Sunday morning. The management and staff went all out for a special Halloween party while we were there. We will definitely be back. read more

Just what we were looking for! A quiet place to get away for a few days of relaxation. Unbelievably well maintained grounds. Thousand Trails are preserves and people need to remember that. There are not going to be fancy water parks and things of that nature. We saw lots of wildlife around the property. Yes, the dock and fishing areas need some work and the restrooms could use an update. If you want to swim in ocean water you can conveniently us US 13 to travel north to the Chincoteague beaches or south to Cape Charles. Or you can just stay and relax by the well maintained pool overlooking the bay marshes. We will definitely be back! read more
