In doing some research, I found out Duke Energy installs whole house surge protectors, waiving the installation fee, but you pay a monthly fee of $10-$15. Whenever I can buy a device (like buying a modem vice paying monthly to an ISP to rent one), I would rather buy than rent. Another thing I learned is that most install a surge protector rated at 65kA or 80kA. While anything between 40kA and 80kA is sufficient protection, I opted for a 108kA device similar to what we had in TX. I called around for quotes. One guy quoted that he charges $40 an hour which is more than fair...but in speaking with him, I didn't get the feeling he's a master of his craft. He told me to research what I wanted instead of recommending what he has installed in previous jobs. Pass! Another electrician, used by our next door neighbor, who knew about the Eaton 108kA surge protector and its requirement for a 50A dual pole circuit breaker for installation, was charging $250. When I contacted Gallagher Electric, Andrea was responsive and provided a very competitive quote. They typically install 80kA surge protectors but I told them I prefer the Eaton 108kA surge protectors that I will purchase from Home Depot. We agreed on a price and they even provided the Square D 50A breaker as part of the installation. Installation was a breeze as Kary did quick and efficient work. I was even able to ask him additional questions about some electrical work I'm looking into doing myself. Great professional service from a small business at a good price!

I mean, this guy works hard and efficiently. We needed a 6x6 and went to the store to get it. He had already dug out the old pole by himself and removed all the old boxes and had all the cord primed and ready for mount by the time we got back. Maybe it was 20 minutes? Then we went inside for a Pepsi and boom he was done. We go out there and he had hooked up a circuit breaker and even a 120 volt and the 50amp to 30amp all in weatherproof boxes and the most top quality wiring. Technician removed already installed surge protector while installing generator apparently just because it made his job a bit difficult. After calling the office few times and talking to the part owner, another technician came to reinstall it and said it was a mistake to remove it. Each of their technicians and managers tell a different story and blame each other. Instead of getting informative and timely updates, you, the customer, have to follow up to get updates and documents. Totally frustrating.
