Our Corgi/Mini Aussie needed TPLO Surgery on both of her hind legs. I took her to 4 veterinary hospitals in Boise Idaho for diagnosis and evaluation before I settled on Sun Valley Animal Center. After speaking to Dr Randy and Denise, and discovering their deep understanding of the TPLO procedure and their patented TPLO Plate (invented by Dr. Randy) we chose them for the surgery. we are now on week 5 of her recovery and we are very pleased with the outcome. Even though she still has a couple of months to get her strength fully back, she is moving better than she has in 8 months, she's back to being playful and frisky again. I went to sun valley for a second option referral to give my dog a CT or mri. All they did for my dog was x-rays when I had asked for further investigation on my dog. As well am almost lead to believe they could have possibly falsified my dog or given me incorrect x-rays as when they were looking at my dog they refused to look at X-rays from intermountain vet clinic and pushed to do their X-rays and forced me to redo the X-rays on my dog. For all I know they could have been looking at the wrong dog's x-rays when I could clearly tell that they had several other x-rays up onon their computer and barely sharing empathy for my dog. Just caring about doing extra X-rays which they only did to and not a through investigation of what could be potentially going on with my dog or what could have caused his limp. As well changing the side of my dog's limp via when trying to push their evidence down my throat. Then going oh, what it looks like is your dog's growth plates probly fused there's nothing we can do. So get that.... In July, my vet diagnosed my puppy with hip dyplesia and referred me to Dr. Randy Hacker for second opinion and treatment options. I called Sun Valley Animal center to get an appointment. I talked to Denise, who wanted to schedule a total hip replacement right away (without even seeing my dog or her x-rays. That should have been a big red flag but, the reviews were good so I moved forward). I told her that I would rather have an evaluation first, to make sure that was what my dog needed. She, reluctantly, gave me an appointment with Dr. Randy Acker. During my appointment with Dr. ACKER, he looked at my dog, (didn't look at the x-rays, until I mentioned it) then, proceeded to tell me about his accomplishments and showing me his PowerPoint about hip dysplasia. He, several times, told me that my dog needed total hip replacement and that, since we were doing one side, we should go ahead and do both sides. After the consultation, ($81), I was pushed to schedule, right away and pay $4250 up front. Which I did. 3 months later, went for the surgery and Dr. Randy Hacker said: - what hip are we doing? (???) - Then proceeded to check my dog hips and shoulders (like he never saw her before) - Looked at the x-rays from July (that he looked at in August already) - Decided to make her walk, to see her gait, and conclude her hips were fine, so were her elbows and that she didn't need surgery.($191 for the exact same examination that he did 3 months prior and that he charged me $81 for). But, he will go ahead and have x-rays done to confirm ($$$$). (Still not sure why he didn't do that the first time, I went to see him in August. Instead of trying to sell me 2 total hip replacement from the get go). Then, he told me that, she was just clumsy, giant breed are generally clumsy (that's the same guy that wanted to do a double hip replacement on my dog, 3 months earlier) Told him, it's more than clumsy. Her brother is not like that, and she fell and had a wobbly walk. He said then, maybe a pinched nerve. But then she shouldn't be able to jump. I suggested wobbler syndrom. He said maybe. And decided to do a complete body x-rays (shoulders, front legs, hips, and spine) and BAM!!!! SHE HAS THE C6 CERVICAL VERTEBRAE (VERTEBRAE IN HER NECK) AND L-S TIPPING, PINCHING THE SPINAL CORD. Thanks to me, for finding out, she may have wobbler syndrom. So , instead of trying to sell me double hip replacement, Dr. Randy Acker, should have tried to investigate the first time he saw teacup, during his orthopedic evaluation. She could have been on prednisone since august. But, NO!!!! Too busy trying to sell his products and trying to impress. I'm MAD!!!! I paid a first orthopedic evaluation in August, for nothing, as he barely looked at my dog's x-rays (only looked because I asked him to), spent most of the "evaluation" talking about his accomplishments and showing me his PowerPoint on hip replacement. Not once was he concern about my dog. He was so certain she needed 2 total hip replacement but, 3 months later she improved and doesn't need it anymore (???). That should have been my big red flag. But, he had good review and was renowned so... I trusted him. Well... so much for that. I guess I should be happy that my dog didn't need surgery. But, I still think I shouldn't have to pay for an evaluation that was not done properly the first time. read more

Just a heads up- if they quote you $350 for X-rays, it's likely going to be north of $600. And you'll only get 2-3 images. If they diagnose your dog with a torn ACL (CCL) after sedating and doing those X-rays, make sure they send you the images (you'll have to ask for them). Do yourself a solid and send those images off for a 2nd opinion before you let them do a TPLO on your animal. Just a word of caution to do your homework here. I was told "the good news is, your dog doesn't have osteosarcoma (our main concern). But the bad news is she has a ruptured CCL and luxated patella" which their TPLO surgery would fix. I sent the X-rays for a 2nd opinion because the dog's knee looked normal in the radiographs. The 2nd opinion from an orthopedic surgeon confirmed there was no visible sign of a torn CCL and the patella wasn't imaged to tell if it had shifted. The 2nd opinion also cautioned that a TPLO wouldn't be the right repair for my 24lb dog. When the right questions were asked to Sun Valley about how/why the diagnosis was made- the whole practice sort of fell apart. They did attempt to explain themselves, though I'm not convinced they weren't trying to operate on a healthy dog in two weeks time. 2 stars because I do give them credit for offering to do a second ortho exam (I didn't accept because they'd already done one the day prior and didn't see how it was material at this point with X-rays in hand). I'm still out the money. I don't have any usable diagnostics to figure out what is actually wrong with my animal, however they did try to provide some remedies for us short of any money back. Tl;dr I believe they tried to schedule my dog for a surgical ACL repair she didn't need after we were able to look at her X-rays and got a 2nd opinion. Get a 2nd opinion by sending off your X-rays to a different orthopedic surgeon before you let them do an invasive surgery on your animal. read more

When our 3 year old miniature dachshund hurt her back and became paralyzed, doctor Randy Acker operated on her spine the very next day. He was very caring and thorough. Took his time with me and my family to make sure we were comfortable and understood everything. It is very obvious how much he cares for animals. Our dachshund, Ruby, recovered quickly, and regained her hind legs over the course of 3 weeks. She is now running, wobbly, at 1 month post operation. SVAC is our Vacation Vet, but they are by no means #2! I have always found the Doctors to be extremely helpful, compassionate and very knowledgeable. We have a vacation home in Stanley and two very active Labradors. Riley is 13 now and suffers from hyper keratosis, a painful foot pad disease. When I brought him in Dr Maggie pulled up his most recent info from our Vet here in the Napa Valley and could see his treatment history. She spent 30 minutes reshaping his pads and he's a new boy! We were on a day trip to Sun Valley two days ago and our dog suffered a collapsed trachea and was choking. We called this clinic in desperation but the receptionist told us very coldly that all her veterinarians had gone home. It was a few minutes after 5 o'clock. We told her it was an emergency but she just repeated that everybody went home. She could have easily called somebody to see if they were willing to come back even if it meant charging extra, but Instead, we had to drive all the way back to Meridian 130 miles to find an open 24 hour clinic. By that time, it was too late. Our dog died of a cardiac arrest because of all the stress from struggling to breathe for two hours. My two young daughters are utterly devastated. But hey, as long as nobody had to drive a few minutes back to work. read more

This experience was stellar from start to finish! Sue, Dr. Randy Acker and all of the staff were amazing. They took great care of our dog and were very kind to me as well. Dr. Acker called when he was done with her surgery and gave me an excellent update. I was able to call that evening as well to check on her. They gave me a time to pick her up the next day and she was ready right on time. Sue was incredibly kind and helpful on the phone as well as Dr. Acker before we scheduled surgery. He called to check on her at home a few days later and we also had a 2nd call the next day to make sure she was doing well. Sue got me set up with a lovely hotel for the night that gives a hospital rate and I appreciated it very much. I highly recommend Dr. Acker and his team. We just contacted them today. We live out of state and have been looking around several states: California, Nevada, Idaho for the best elbow surgeon around. This place and Dr. Acker came highly recommended by several sources. I did some research on the Dr. and he has excellent credentials. So, this morning we had our vet send him our boy's xrays. He limps when playing sometimes. Our vet said it was the worst elbow they have ever seen. Sent me into panic mode and I'm telling my wife schedule him for surgery tomorrow! Dr. Acker does elbows all day long at his practice. Lots of them is an understatement. He reassured us it is minor arthritis and the surgery may or may not produce a better outcome. I can stop the valium and vodka drip into my veins now. He also told us what to look for if it gets worse, how to treat it ongoing without a surgical option. And if our 2nd opinion starts trying to upsell several items; gave us the pro's and con's of each one. He didn't even charge us to look over the x-rays and consult us over the phone. Plus I still can't get over the level of service. Seriously. Same day within hours of them receiving the xray's called my wife. Who couldn't pick up the phone as she was in a Dr. office. So she called back and he was in surgery. But, he called within the hour again. Thank you for caring more about the patient than the profit. You're a unicorn in life DR. I cannot keep quiet one moment longer about Sun Valley Animal Center. They are the worst. The absolute worst. I just called about Charlie's ashes half an hour ago. Now Im a bawling . He was put to sleep 3 and a half weeks ago. The tech just told me he was cremated 2 days ago. My little guy: cold and stiff in a pile at that shit show. When I took Charlie in, they had to inform me how busy they were. When I went to say goodbye, I had to light their damn candle that "some grieving parent is saying good bye to their beloved pet" myself. Because they were just "so busy." Randy Acker didn't even come out and explain before we put him to sleep. I wish I could have just brought him to the farm and asked my soul vet, Erin, to do it. Five days later Randy told me on the phone, " we are just so busy, I had to focus on the dogs that were going to live." I was so sad that his bullshit didn't sink in. Charlie was more than a dog. When I had cancer, he sat by my bedroom door waiting for me to come home for 8 weeks through radiation. Steve tried to make him leave my room, come out and be with them, but he just sat in the hallway by my door til I came home. He was with me through my Phd program, through my move back East, through treatment, through book writing, through the 18 months when I finally faced some pretty shitty demons in extensive therapy. He was beloved by so many. Students. Friends. Colleagues. Sun Valley Animal Center. You are vets. I am so sorry you are too busy. I know you are busy. This is THE PREMIER animal hospital if your dog needs orthopedic surgery. My Greyhound broke a bone in her foot. Dr. Randy Acker operated on her and she was acting like her old self within days. The operation was a success. There was no residual oozing or bleeding. In fact, you can hardly tell that she even had an operation. Dr. Acker told me that this was an unusual break and that he only sees this a couple of times per year. He used to do the majority of orthopedic surgeries at West Vet in Boise, Idaho. Before the procedure, he explained to me all that he was going to have to do and afterwards, he explained what he had done by showing me the X-rays of her 2 pins and how this was going to improve her ability to walk normally without a limp. Because of his reputation, I was not all stressed out because I knew that I had come to the right doctor to take care of Randa. Since the pandemic, my dog and I have spent a whole lot of time together. So when the family decided to spend our Christmas break in Sun Valley, we brought the dog with us. I originally planned to leave him at our rental during the day while we skied, but after returning home after that first day, it was clear the solitude stressed him out. Enter Sun Valley Animal Center to the rescue! I made the call to inquire about daily doggie daycare and was pleasantly surprised that it was possible, and that it took next to no effort to set up. All I had to do was get my vet back home to email me my dog's vaccination record, showing that he was up-to-date on all the important vaccinations (bordetella, rabbies, etc), and then email it to SVAC. They didn't require a reservation, so that next morning I took him over (conveniently located just outside Ketchum). The staff were so warm and welcoming and I sensed my dog would be well taken care of there. The daycare section is downstairs. There are two rooms: one for big dogs and another for small dogs. They also go outside a few times each day to stretch their legs. My dog, a somewhat nervy 13 lb Havanese, did great. I got a report each day that he made friends and had a good time. I am so grateful that SVAC was there for us when we needed them and feel quite comfortable recommending them to others. read more

We had a very positive experience here. Our family drove across the country this summer and kept the dogs with us every night except when staying at the SV Resort. I don't like to leave our little dogs, (weiners), anywhere so I was a little nervous and probably overly dramatic when dropping them off. The staff were very patient and kind to us. It's summer and there were some hot days but they have a little doggie pool for them and my 2 were able to stay together, alone, away from other dogs. (I read online that they would have to pass a little congeniality test in order to stay with other dogs, but I know my dogs well enough to see a fail coming, but if it fits the bill for you, go for it!) The price was actually the same as I pay at home and there are more amenities at SVAC. I love Sun Valley/Ketchum and have been many times but will bring my dogs from now on because they loved it here! read more

My friend Olaf had a torn ligament in his right knee. His usual robust and happy personality was reduced to obvious sadness. He was not using his right rear leg hardly at all. I was worried his life would be reduced to sitting around or even shortened. I was referred to Sun Valley Animal Center by a local vet. I was super nervous. I knew Olaf's future was on the table. After doing a little research, I scheduled an appointment. When I arrived the staff was very friendly and professional. I met with Dr. Randy Acker. He assured me everything would be fine. He took Olaf and said go have lunch. We will be done in a couple hours. I cannot say enough about Dr. Acker and this place. They did a great job! Olaf is now at about 10 weeks since surgery. He is back to running, playing and he has his life back. If you are considering this surgery for your friend I would say do not hesitate. We went to see Dr. Acker 2 years ago for our lab who was limping on her right front limb. Before we went to see Dr. Acker the specialized vet we had been seeing thought it was her shoulder and we spent a ton of money and more importantly a ton of time trying to get her better. We finally decided to take the road trip to see Dr. Randy Acker and he diagnosed our little girl, after extensive testing, with elbow displasia instead of her shoulder. He gave her a shot of lubricant and within a week our little girl was running again and as happy as could be. When we left Dr. Randy Acker's office he told us we were a team now and if we run into any more trouble with Aspen then contact him anytime. We were good for 2 years and then she started limping again. Unfortunately we wasted a bunch of time again trying to solve the problem locally and after her being on leash for 2-1/2 months we decided to make the road trip from Bozeman, MT again to see Dr. Acker. We left her at their office in the morning and he told us he would call if he thought she needed surgery. We received a call mid day and he said they found bone chips in both her elbows and explained everything we needed to know to give him our okay to perform the surgery. We picked her up at 5 pm, so it was so incredibly wonderful of them to know we were from out of town and did all of the service in one day. The most AWESOME thing is our little girl is back to running, sniffing and beyond happy to be off leash again with no sign of limping. I could not even to begin to tell you how much I would recommend Dr. Randy Acker and SVAC!! I almost want to move to Sun Valley just so he can be our regular vet. But if you have a dog with some orthopedic injury I would not waste any time or money and just take your dog to Dr. Randy Acker for his experience, skill and his care. Second to none!!! read more

The SVAC hospital and the SVAC boarding center seem to be different businesses that do not get along. Several times I have been in the facility when someone from the hospital is visibly angry with someone from the boarding center. My review of the hospital is based on minimal interactions at the front desk and it is basically that their vet techs and staff are very rude. Our experience is from boarding at SVAC which has always been confusing, at best. When we first started bringing our dogs there, we paid when we picked them up. Unbeknownst to us, sometime in the past year or so that practice changed and they began sending invoices. Recently, we were unpleasantly surprised by a past due invoice by SVAC. I've been communicating with them via email to express my frustration with the interest charge and a number of other issues we were concerned about during the last two visits. Amongst those concerns, the staff at SVAC returned a full bag of dog food to me, despite both my dogs being boarded for more than 24 hours. I only noticed this because both my dogs were pawing at the dog bowls in the truck when we loaded up. Not acceptable. I also was berated by a staff member of the hospital for not carrying a cell phone (wasn't aware that was required for pick-up) and had to bang on the door after wandering around the building for 10-15 minutes hollering for someone to answer. In any case, when I voiced these concerns with the owner, I was disturbed by the response I received. Instead of working to make amends, the owner blamed us for "not communicating" that our dogs still needed to eat when we dropped them off. She then went on to also state that it was our responsibility clarify with their staff about payment (I absolutely asked both times about paying when I was there and was never, never, never told about invoicing). In short, there are few options in Ketchum for dog boarding, but I would encourage you to check with friends and neighbors before leaving your dogs and money with this company. read more

Beware, for the life of your pet. My 15 yo Italian Greyhound, Zampano, would still be alive today, had I not taken him to Sun Valley Animal Center ("SVAC"). I take no pleasure in writing a negative review, but the untimely death of my dog from what I believe to be no less than Negligence and possibly Malpractice by Maggie Acker-Buck at SVAC, is my motivation to demand accountability and fairness and the reason for this public warning. And because Maggie Acker-Buck of SVAC will not own up to her deadly mistakes. I brought Zampano to SVAC for the removal of a small growth on his head and for a teeth cleaning. It was the second time. The first time I brought Zampano to Dr Scott Acker at SVAC in Ketchum was November 27, 2017, which was also to have a growth on his head removed and to have his teeth cleaned. Zampano has been given a anesthesia to clean his teeth once or more every year of his life with no problem. On Zampano's second visit to SVAC, I told Dr Maggie Acker-Buck not to use the anesthesia that was Dr Scott Acker used the first time Zampano visited SVAC because he had a very difficult time recovering from it. Dr Scott Anker told me that he had used the same anesthesia that caused Michael Jackson to over-doze. Maggie Acker-Buck used the anesthesia that I told her not to use and which my dog could not recover from and she called me during the procedure to tell me that my dog had an abscessed molar and that it should be removed. I replied that Zampano has eaten hard chew treats and bones every day of his life and has never shown any signs of pain of discomfort while eating. I deeply regret that I deferred to her opinion. I had a real dentist review the x-ray that Maggie Acker-Buk took of Zampano's molar and he said, "Looks like periodontal bone loss on the furcation on his molar. Something like that may not bother him." Maggie Acker-Buck misdiagnosed my dog's condition, he did not have an abscess. It is now obvious to me that Maggie Anker-Buck does not know animal dentistry well enough to practice animal dentistry. Had I never let Maggie Anker-Buck near Zampano, because he would be alive today. Zampano suffered for two full days after what they did to him at SVAC, coughing-up blood which he never did after 15 years of any surgery or teeth cleaning. Yes, I believe SVAC didn't harm on purpose, but SVAC should take responsibility for their mistakes. Maggie Anker-Buck should have taken more care. I don't trust her. SVAC at 106 Clear Creek, Ketchum appears to be geared toward a money-making machine and efficient business, but not a place I would trust with the life of my best friend. read more

I have been a Valley resident for over 10 years and have never heard anything but positive feedback about this wonderful group of people. Randy, Scott, Maggie, and Heidi you are the best! When I came in there the last time, right after I adopted my new puppy (yay!) you didn't even charge me an exam fee after spending the time to do a thorough wellness examination of her. I wouldn't recommend anyone go anywhere else in the Valley for any of their pet needs. I brought my performance borzoi with a torn CCL to Dr. Acker, on a strong recommendation. I understood that Dr. Acker specialized in field dogs, but he knew nothing about the coursing my dog did and had not done a running dog before, as it turned out. Dr. Acker gave a presentation that was mainly about himself and had very little to do with my dog. He was resistant about answering my questions. His main concern seemed to be telling us about how wealthy his clients were, how they arrived in private jets, etc. He had a lot of time to talk about that, but very little time to talk about my dog. I drove 9 hours to get there. My dog's surgery was on March 23, 2014. My dog never recovered well from the surgery. I got a second opinion at 6 weeks out, from a mobile canine knee surgeon who travels to different areas, and he thought the TPLO was over-rotated and misaligned. It is over-rotated because Dr. Acker measured her tibial plateau angle incorrectly. The mobile surgeon called Dr Acker, who yelled at him. Dr. Acker wanted me to wait 6 months post-op, and do PT, which I did. My girl was still lame. I went to a board certified surgeon in Seattle for another opinion. Dr. Acker is not board certified. This surgeon in Seattle found the same problems with the surgery that the mobile knee surgeon had found at 6 weeks out. Both these surgeons also found the plate to be way too big. With the second surgeon, I had the plate removed. Now we are 3 months post plate removal and planning a re-cutting of the TPLO surgery in Feb. This will be to correct the over-rotation and to correct the bone alignment. The way Dr Acker did it, has left our girl with a chronic pateller tendonitis and a leg that swings out oddly to the side. Dr. Acker charged $2,400, which was a low price for a TPLO. However, with the plate removal, several sets of x-rays, and PT, I have now spent over $8,000 on my girl's knee, and she is still lame. The new TPLO will be $4,000. I do not know, at this point, if she will ever be normal. Dr. Acker was dismissive of us when I met him, and I should have walked away, because I found his emphasis on his own greatness and his disinterest in my dog not to be encouraging. The records he sent my local vet are a joke; the only thing about my dog in them is the angle he measured, which turned out to be wrong. The rest was a description of how to do a TPLO copied from a textbook, and pasted into her records. That lack of careful meticulous treatment characterized my entire experience with Dr. Acker. I have asked for a refund of my money, to put toward my girl's expenses subsequent to Dr. Acker's surgical errors. I have had no response, not unexpectedly. Maybe Dr. Acker's casual sloppy attitude toward correct measurements, good records, etc, will get by with many house pets who are not athletes. But if you have a performance dog and you want them to be able to have their life back, this is not the guy to go to. Go to someone who is board certified and who cares enough to be meticulous. read more

Randy Acker is a doggie God! Our Mini Pincher recently had surgery and I can't even express in words how happy we are with the results, its like we have a new dog.
