This is my first Yelp review, have never had such a poor experience. I had to share - We went for a 2:00 reservation for my buddy's bachelor weekend. Showed up at 1 as they recommended, and didn't get over to where the keep the vehicles until 2:30 (a shuttle has to drop you off). Then, we were told that the cars we had rented weren't available yet, and they didn't know when they would be. We were told to sit around and wait until the vehicles were available. Again, we had reservations for 2:00 for two of the vehicles. It's now 3:45 (waited 75 mins) and the vehicles are ready. We head out there, and it's pretty fun. 10 minutes into driving one of our vehicles broke. We're stranded in the dunes, someone comes to pick us up to tow us back. Takes an hour to get back to where the vehicles are kept. It's now 5:00 (we were supposed to be done at 4 after riding for 2 hours, it's 5:00 and we rode for 10 minutes) and they are telling us "We'll get some other vehicle that you guys can take turns on". We did not want to do that, we wanted our $1,000 deposit back, since nothing we paid for was delivered. The owner/manager (not sure what his role was, older guy with a beard) said not possible, best we can do is get a voucher to come back. We are never coming back. Currently fighting to get the refund back, nearly 5 hours of our buddy's bachelor trip was wasted because of this companies incompetency, severe lack of organization, and shockingly poor customer service. Do NOT waste your money here, everyone else was waiting hours as well and no one was happy. Heard Steve's rentals is better (right next to Sunbuggy). read more

I'm not a review guy, but want to give those who are considering Sunbuggy Fun Rentals some advise to consider. First of all, we had a great time....once we got going. Pismo Dunes are incredible. Few items I want to relay: 1) We reserved a side by side on-line the night before 2) We showed up 75min early to finish paperwork and watch safety video 3) Once on the beach, our side by side was not there 4) Waited ~1hr for it to be dropped off 5) ~10min into ride (at 15mph), the check engine message came on 6) We contacted Sunbuggy and they picked up the Can-am we rented and gave us a Polaris so we could continue our fun. Everything went well for the rest of our time. When we returned, we inquired about the price difference between the can am and the Polaris. We were told by "Santa Clause" that they would make it "right". That has not happened. I called twice. The call center can not do anything other than make notes to send to "Quality Assurance". The email says they will reply withing 48 hours. On both occasions, I have not had a reply. My advice would be not to use the on-line rental reservations and to make sure what you think you are renting is actually available. Below are the correspondences that I have not heard back from. ------------------------------------------------------- I have not seen a reply to this but did get an email on Wednesday that I should have gotten a response within 48 hours. We pulled over and called Sunbuggy Pismo and they asked us to stay and they would come out. About 30 minutes later a gentleman arrived with a Polaris RZR and told us that would be our ride. So our official riding started at 2:40. We had a great time on the dunes but obviously a little disappointed with the delay and a lot disappointed about trying to get the payment to make sense. When we came back, we were told to talk to a man nicknamed "Santa Clause", we were told he was the owner. Our conversation was fine and he said he would 'make it right'. Obviously, that is a vague statement, but we had a honest conversation and thought it would be made right with the pricing. We decided to try out ATV's for the first time and booked online. If you reserve a week in advance you get a discount as well as early bird special for 2 hrs. You must arrive an hour early for paperwork and watch a safety video. They provided helmets & we were ready to go. Coby was so friendly and helpful at the front. She helped us with our helmets & shuttled us to and from the ATV site. Once we got there Pete took care of our paperwork. Pete, Angel & Riggs got us set up on our ATVs and Riggs helped my son get unstuck several times before we even took off to explore the dunes. Trial and error, kids kept getting stuck in dunes but to be expected. Overall it was a good experience and next time it will be better when they are big enough to ride the 4WD ATVs. Would recommend Sunbuggies if wanting to try ATVing the dunes. read more

Riding on the dunes was amazing. We rented the RZR and it had some serious kick, had very little issue with climbing the dunes. We checked in with Lynn and she was extremely friendly, even gave us a great list of things to check out in the area! Then we took the bus to the launch zone to get in our UTV. It was such a fun time and an experience I've never had before. Gilbert was at the launch zone and was helpful and wicked friendly which we really appreciated. Shady business. Booked online for atv and when we got there they pull some BS saying I reserved kids bikes when it says it's for 16 and over on their website. They proceeded to force me to pay to upgrade all 8 rides and charged a 2400 dollar deposit on top. Their service is slow so they'll waste your time while you wait on them to get everything ready. When we finally got to where the ATVs were they only had one model out there so it was obvious they didn't even have the ones I reserved and they did a bait and switch to charge us more money and used a lane excuse to charge us more. Their website says if you book ATV with them you get a free shirt, that's a lie. Their ATV is super worn down and looks like it's been through hell too. Book somewhere else, shady business practices and slow service. Rude employees too. Edit: What a joke response from customer service. None of us weigh more than the max limit. None of us weigh "190" or more than that. She says the max is 175 no one in our group weighs more than 175. Very professional of you to assume we are the same person. We reserved a 2-Seater Dunebuggy for Thu 10/16/25 @ 10am. Paid in advance $511.09 over the phone for reservation - plus a deposit was taken during our 9am check in. When they finally got us and a few other parties onto the beach to get us in our units, we were told the two 2-Seater Buggies they had on the beach were not running correctly and the guy helping us put us in a 2-seater Wolverine instead. Mind you, this unit was only $326.34 had we chosen to reserve this unit! We voiced our concerns of the $200 price difference paid and whether we would get a refund of the difference. Being told he or the other employees didnt have the authority to offer that but could offer a Voucher for future rental time. We didn't want future rental time, we just wanted the refund of the price difference. We were told they woukd see what the could do and that the Wolverine was an "upgrade" yet it was less expensive to rent!! They sent us off in the replacement unit. Dont get me wrong, we still enjoyed ourselves out on the dunes, we just wanted the price adjustment for the difference we were over charged. At the end of our rental period, once we got back up to their kiosk The dark haired girl in the kiosk was quite short & obviously perturbed with us (like how dare we be entitled to a refund of the price difference for them NOT giving us what we had reserved) we were told that "Randy" approved the "partial" refund and that we had to call a guy named "Max" in their Las Vegas location in order to get the refund! She gave us a tel number & email to contact Max. WELL YOU GUESSED IT, now 6 Days Later and at least 10 phone calls & messages left for Max as well as emailed. We have yet to receive a courtesy call back or a refund of the difference! It's really a shame that they do business this way! The guys on the ground working at the Oceano location were very friendly and informative, the girl in the kiosk could use some customer relations skills! Somebody at this location should have been authorized to handle the refund instead of all this BS they have put us through! It's to bad, they might have gotten a nice tip had this been handled correctly! Now we will have to go through our bank to get this sorted out! I would NEVER recommend SunBuggy to anyone. Here's why: The steering column on our dune buggy broke because it was severely rusted (we have photos that we sent to their corporate office). We were not helped for 1.5 hours due to a miscommunication between employees. Both issues are the responsibility of SunBuggy, and no fault of our own. However, they refused to take responsibility for poorly maintained equipment and staff error and refused a $400 refund. This company will not do what's right for any reason.Everyone who has this kind of experience with this company should report them IMMEDIATELY to the Better Business Bureau. Honestly, this company is the worst company I've ever dealt with (appears I am not alone~look at all their 1 star reviews). We did not have a good experience with Sunbuggy RV. We rented a 4-seater, one two-seater, and two single person vehicles. There were six of us. The first 4-seat rv we rented would not go in to 4-wheel drive. We got stuck a few times before we figured out the 4-wheel drive would not engage. The front wheels were useless. We drove it back and the crew put us into another 4-wheel drive vehicle that overheated 300 yards away from the pickup point. We returned it. They did not have another 4-seater available. My wife and I returned to the main rental office. The remaining four of our party continued in the dunes for the remaining hour of our two hour rental, with a "20 minute" time extension for our trouble. We asked the rental agent for a refund for the unused hour my wife and I gave up. They refused and said the best they could do was to issue an email VOUCHER (for an undetermined amount). Our total rental bill for the day was over $800, AND we had to put down a $2100 equipment deposit! And Sunbuggy can't put a refund on our credit card???? Really? We live 250 miles from Pismo and don't know when we will be back. The kids who put us into the ATV's were great, but they are not mechanics. HOWEVER, the refund policy of this company is horrible. August 15 2021 When we arrived An hour early as requested for the reservation even though it Took longer than an hour to get everything set up and not only that the ATV deposit prices were different online and so some of the people in the group had to pay a differentHolding deposit. The lady at the desk I don't remember her name there was a young lady and older lady they requested some guy get on the phone with Vegas so that they can change the prices on the website. Prior to heading there we watched video regarding safety and ATV fundamentals and rules. I repeat not once did they tell us that we would need to use our phones longitude and latitude in a app in order to be rescued from a dune, ditch or the ATV stopped working. Unfortunately one of the ATVs got stuck in a hole we proceeded to call the number that was on the map which was given to us at the time of check-in they told us that we would need to scan a barcode that is located on the ATV and do it that way I said we were never instructed to do that, we were told to call the number and tell them what pole we were located near and they will send someone out to help us. We had one of our family members drive back to the site and they told us to do that and we attempted to that and unfortunately it didn't work. Not only that they bypassed us and went to help someone else who got stuck after us and was not stuck for no more than 10 minutes and they magically received help. We were able to get out of hole with the help of another family. We wasted about 45 mins in total .My mother called back them back while we were stuck And before she was able to speak they asked Her if they got unstuck yet and We told them no. My sister also observed one of the sunbuggy employees watching us and proceeded to drive off to assist someone else. On our way to make sure everyone was OK my cousins dune buggy stopped working we were assisted by someone who worked for sunbuggy by chance and he determined that the dune buggy was not turning on because of a loose wire and he said to go talk to The site manager. I believe the name was Casey. To be very clear we paid two hours of time. So yes we wasted some time being stuck. Even though we were stuck we did have a wonderful time but they have very poor customer service and we haven't even gotten to the craziness. We all rode back to the site so that we can talk to Casey and find out what they were going to do regarding the dune buggy that wouldn't start. Apparently Casey Had just left from the site so we spoke to the lead in charge and I believe his name is Marlin. he was able to reach out to Casey on the phone and he agreed to give my cousin a voucher for the full price of the ride which included the two hours in total. So the team begin loading our ATVs back onto their truck as my mother is having a conversation with Marlin I noticed a big metal piece of shrapnel in the sand near my cousins ankle. I decided to move it because I didn't want her to be cut so I picked it up and threw it out of the way. The guy known as Cameron looked at us like we were crazy with mean and angry stare. My cousin and I made eye contact with each other and thought that was strange. We thought we were seeing things but we dropped it and continued to walk to the bus so we can be transported back to Reservation desk. When we were walking to the bus with our backs facing Cameron and the rest of the team and ATVs my sister noticed he threw up a white power sign to us most likely because I do threw that big piece of metal out of the way. I low key also saved the ATVs imagine if they ran it over they could've easily got a flat tire. So when my sister called him out on it he continued to walk back to another ATV which is far away from us and we then started asking for his name from his coworkers who said nothing except for one. They informed us that his name was Cameron and keep in mind also we were not speaking to him we did not say anything we were walking back to the bus And he had the courage to do it behind our backs while his coworkers tried to defend him and say that he didn't do anything but when he approached us again he told us he did it. They all began to huddle in a circle and start talking amongst each other and we said that this is the worst experience that we've ever had and they have poor customer service that you shouldn't be excusing anything. And that we would not be returning to this company. We then went back to the headquarters were we made the reservations so that we can return the helmets and so that my cousin could get the voucher for the two hour ride which ended up being one hour when which he found out two weeks later. He also found out that charged him and for another 300$ for the dune buggy rental. They lady said that Cameron can't be racist because he's half black wait what huh what. So if you are mixed with another race you cannot be considered racist and you cannot throw up racist hand gestures. read more

Found the place after seeing it was well-reviewed on Yelp. Was quite intimidated by $1500 damage deposit and recent reviews about random incidentals. The damage deposit what refunded within 24 hours of our ride. Just like all the other reviews, the front desk person needs to lighten up, occasional small smiles but mostly flat. No rudeness though. Got a 2-seater Wolverine UTV for an hour about $260 taxes, helmet and goggles rentals included. They had a shuttle available to bring you to the recreational course by the beach. There's a fee if you wanna drive your vehicle by the beach to pay to the park. Before the shuttle, you get to watch a 17-min safety video on Youtube you're told you just need to watch the first 8 mins to. The man who talked about the course and the controls was very pleasant. He even volunteered to take photos for us before and after the ride on his own. We did take photos of the UTV prior to our ride. The one hour was well-worth it. The sand dunes had different difficulties. I wished the area was better marked but at least you can easily find the restrooms. The course is shared by different business and patrolled by the park officers since it is owned by the state though the 15mph speed limit is only in the first half of the course. They also have dune buggies and ATVs. Would definitely see them again to ride off-road vehicles on the dunes! read more

I was told that they had some vehicle issues or a car was blocking so it caused an hour delay for everyone who was there in the morning. Just wasted $350! We rented 4 RTVs, one being a smaller one for my 8 year old. First they tried to have my kid on a quad that didnt even stay on for 5 mins, he kept saying it will warm up!! Out of the 1 hour we rented, me and my little one spent 45 mins with the small RTV stuck in the sand! I single handedly had to dig it out of the sand more than 20 times and at some point I called the helpline, which they finally showed up when we were returning the RTVs. To make it up to my kid, I asked her to jump on the back of my RTV so at least we tried one last fast ride. That's when the "help guy" suddenly showed up, to shout at me it was illegal to double ride! This was not written anywhere or been told to us before! My kid jumped off immediately and walked back, so upset with the way the guy had talked to me. Then the guy, with so much hair covering his eyes that I couldn't even see whom I was talking to, says "are you the same person who asked for help?", this is 20 mins after my call to them, he says "you were in the 'do not enter' area"! So I showed him on the map where I was, which wasn't even close to the 'do not enter' area, and anyway, that was only the one time out of the 25 times that we got stuck! He was extremely rude and unprofessional! The place never even asked us about the quality of the rides afterwards. So i had to come here to let them know the quality anyway! I later found out that my husband's RTV kept turning off too! I'm not at all person to get angry easily! But the look on my kid's face, and how angry she was for the way that guy spoke with me, it was enough to get me to leave this review. $350 to leave me feeling so frustrated and disappointed... read more

We were a group of 6, walk-in no reservation on a Sunday. We got 6 450cc Yamahas. The price was very reasonable and the wait time wasnt bad. There was a 30min delay once we got to the vehicle pickup place and they got us on a 6-seater for free during the wait. We drove up from LA for this and it was definitely worth the drive. First time ever visiting sand dunes, let alone riding through them. This location was breathtaking and man were those dunes so much fun to ride through. Alas, this review is about the company, not how much fun I had. We were a group of 3 and the 3rd person got lost and made us 30min late to start time. I was worried this would cut into our paid time. Thankfully it didn't. Took the shuttle to the rental area. I got their smallest helmet and it was still too loose. I should have brought my own cause I got bad whiplash from the loose helmet. I should have said something but at the time it felt snug enough. Originally rented the Polaris RZR 4x4 UTV but even though I got it on their website that was a vehicle only at their Vegas location (so they say). So they didn't have it. I paid extra to get the Maverick X3 Turbo UTV and the 3rd person got an ATV. About an hour into ridding the ATV battery died. Had to call the emergency pickup#, they came 30 minutes later. I guess it was a busy day because they didn't have any other ATVs to swap. Instead got a sandrail. Spent 20minutes and could quickly tell the sandrail sucked. Barely had power to get to the top, let alone get out of a dune. Went back to see what we could do. The passenger in my car was tired so they dropped out. That's when the real fun began. I was really worried we would get charged for the swaps. And overall was bummed with the lack of inventory. What could have ended in a negative experience was turned around. Talk to the ladies at the office explained everything and they gave us a voucher of equal value to use at their Vegas location. It was frustrating seeing how they couldn't manage their inventory. But my biggest annoyance is their website. You can tell it was made in the early 2000's. It's so outdated, and yellow text and tacky and those awful Microsoft paint photos of their vehicles you do know you have a beautiful landscape and iPhones that can take better pictures than what you have posted!! This was my first experience riding an ATV and since I was on vacation, my best friend booked us an adventure at the sand dunes. Tips: reservations are required ahead of time so plan ahead! Riders must arrive an hour ahead of time before your scheduled ride. Rented a couple toys from them, Lin helped us at the window and was very helpful at the location we had trouble with one of the atvs but quickly was resolved by the technician, shout out to them they were very assuring. Definitely will go back and rent from them. read more

Really fantastic job of ruining the Pismo beach experience I had nostalgia for as a child. From start to finish, poor communication, terrible logistics, pressuring and upselling and poor equipment led to a wasted half the day on something that was anything but fun. It was my girlfriends first time at the dunes and it was extremely disappointing for her. The employees are nice but most are not well trained and the owner seems to micromanage and not do a good job. I'm hoping for a refund but I'm sure it will be difficult and I'll end up having to do a chargeback. They are the cheapest for a reason, I will not rent through them again and highly suggest others do the same. read more

Do yourself a favor and filter out 1-2 star reviews to understand a common theme in those not-so-fun experiences. Sunbuggy Fun Rentals are cheaper for a reason. Mandatory 'Safety Video' is half of time about how you are going to lose your deposit. Extremely worn down and rusted vehicle fleet. Many reviews report issues with charges on vehicle damages allegedly caused by reckless driving. Our family had fun overall but we also had a case of being charged for damaging a part which clearly looked badly rusted inside out and needed repairs (see photo). I guess this is their business model to 'pass savings' on routine maintenance parts and labor cost to oblivious customers... We were charged $200 for that repair and the employee made a 'feel good' statement that's still very cheap. I guess he was implying that we were lucky and they were able to charge much more from other suckers in the past. There were few groups of of people complaining about their ATVs breaking down mid-way, left stranded in the middle of dunes, long waiting for help, replacement bikes and as a result maybe having 15-20minutes of advertised fun from full 1 hour booked. They were getting 'store credit' coupons and no other options (i.e. refunds) while clearly stating they are out of state or international tourists so they will have no use of this credit. Research other options before you go as there are at least two more ATV rental companies in the area which seemed to have much more organized operations and much newer vehicle fleet. It is just easy to miss them as 'Sunbuggy Fun Rentals' have a huge sign and booth right on the beach parking lot. read more
