Steve's ATV Rental - ATV Rentals/Tours Near Me - Grover Beach, California

SCAM ALERT! I have been riding sand dunes on and off for about 35 years, Pismo, Glamis. My kids wanted to go out riding on Saturday, so we drove 2.5 hrs. to Pismo to ride the dunes. When I asked for the Polaris 1000, the lady at the counter asked me if I was sure I wanted the 1000 and not the 900. I told her I have experience and I feel very comfortable driving it. The vehicle we received was clearly beat up and run down. Zip ties to hold the trim piece, the doors wouldn't close to easy, driver side mesh shield did not have a way to clip it so it flaps as you are driving, major rust and paint pealing frame (I have pictures). About 30 minutes into our drive we stalled. Due to recent rain and fully inflated, non sand-pedal tires, we dug in the wet sand. I tried going in reverse and the gears grinded. All kids out, we started digging. We finally got the Polaris out but this time the "H" gear did not work, only the "L" gear. Check engine light was on as well as the steering wheel with exclamation mark light. I decided to drive the vehicle back to camp. Upon arrival I explained the situation and the reply was: "everything was working when you left here." I was treated like the bad guy and was even refused to get my receipt back, let alone credit for my time. It felt like this scam was very well orchestrated. Long story short, they are claiming I was responsible for destroying the transmission. Short of driving the Polaris full speed and putting it in reverse I have no idea how a transmission would suffer this much damage. I am glad I took pictures and videos and have already spoke to my attorney. This is clearly a scam to have clients pay for maintaining their broken down vehicles. They ruined our day and made us feel cheated. read more

do not pick steve's atv rentals. there are 3 or 4 other places to choose from and i don't want people to make the same mistake i did. i never write reviews and have never had problems like i did here. here are all my problems with steve's atv (in chronological order) 1. the female staff at the check in location is extremely disrespectful, inconsiderate, and don't have much information. i didn't catch her name and honestly didn't want to talk to her more than i had to. we had a party of 3 and we completed our reservation online. my little brother is 17 and i put his age on the form it asked me to fill out the day before. it said he is good to ride if there is a 21+ guardian. He wasn't allowed to ride bc an "adult" had to be present. I am 23 but i didn't qualify as an adult according to the maybe 18 year old girl behind the counter. lots of attitude was thrown my way after simply asking questions on what i could do so my brother could ride the atv. so if you have anyone under the age of 18, their PARENT must be present which isn't stated online. 2. once that was sorted (my parents had to show up and hang around for no reason) we were told by the staff at the front desk to wait by the water for the shuttle. we waited about 15 minutes and then my boyfriend (age 24) went back to the desk to see if we were in the right place. they said to just wait by the water again. we waited for about 15 more minutes and a white van pulls up and takes us about a half of a mile to the ATV location. 3. we were ATV'ing fairly early and there we were pretty much the only ones there. it was 11am and we had booked one hour. they put us in the trailer to watch their 15 minute safety video. they give us the helmets which are included in the price. we ask for goggles but you need to rent them for $3 each. highly recommend doing that. sunglasses don't work as well as you think. then we get on the ATV and someone teaches you how the gears and shifting works. my boyfriend and brother knew how to drive a semi automatic but i didn't. he spent about 30 seconds teaching me and then went back in the trailer. i got off because i wasn't comfortable and looked for someone to ask questions. they proceeded to teach me how to drive from inside of the trailer. it was already 5 minutes into our timed booking so i just decided to go and figure it out myself. 4. the dunes itself were super cool. our vehicles worked fine. upon returning back to the trailer at exactly noon (one hour on the dot) we were told to go to window 5 to get our paperwork back. we get that back promptly. then we were told to go to window 2 to give our helmets and gear back. window 2 is the check in window and had 8-10 people checking in. i tried to go to window 3 which was another open window to return the gear but was instructed only window 2. this is a trailer and i see the helmet shelf behind all the windows. a bit ridiculous to have to wait in a line to drop something off. i dropped it off window 5 and was given attitude to which i responded back. they said "whatever it's fine" and i couldn't have left that place faster. i know i'm only 23 years old and not an "adult" in their eyes but i'm still a paying customer. i have never left a review on yelp. i'm a college student and i have had shitty service plenty of times but this was so unbearable. also they charge $300 deposit fee and it charges your card. they say it will come back in a few business days but i would keep an eye on that. all in all. just choose a better place. the sunbuggy rental company was out there too and i actually was talking to one of their instructors out there and he helped me out a lot! read more

I would not rent from this place again. I agree with a previous reviewer that they gave us a rusted ATV. It is a good thing I took a video of the unit prior to going out. I highly recommend it to anyone renting from any of the places. To me it was all business. the instructor did not explain how to work the clutch ATV. Just said this is clutch one, two, three, 4 and so forth and on to the next person. and he said he was doing me a favor by giving us 10 min. extra where he was counting the training as part of the time to rent the ATV. None sense. Oh, did I mention that renting from Steve;'s you are paying 20 more than any other place for the same thing. they charge 10 extra for gas and 10 for taxes where other rentals all of that is included in the price. Be aware. this is one of the few places that has automatic ATV and my wife wanted to pay the extra 20 per person to rent from here . I was not able to get my ATV to go fast or past 3rd clutch or maybe the ATV was not working good. My son had a hard time with a flat tire and kept getting stuck in the sand. I would say the ATV's were not in good condition. then we were able to get it to work. when we returned the ATV's , 4 of them, they tried to blame a crack on one of them on the side on us. Good thing the video taken prior to taking them out showed that it was there prior. Then they tried to stick to us some scratches on top that were there before. As I said, they try to stick it to you anyway they can. Some people may be assertive and defend themselves while others who may not have noticed anything or paid attention before or taken a video prior to renting, and may have no choice but to accept what they claim and pay additional 400 for damages that may have been there before but you never knew to pay attention and mark it on there. I would not rent from this place again. And I did not like riding the ATV in general on the sand. It was dangerous, sand would go into your eyes or clothing. read more

This is based upon my personal experience, and I have nothing good to say about this establishment. The staff is not cooperative at all, and have the tendency to blame the customer for wrongdoings as opposed to neutral fact finding. No wonder they have bad reviews on better business bureau and yelp. I would highly advise ATV customers to stay away from this place. FYI. An honest parental review: Having booked at Steves many years ago when our kids were truly adolescent, and had a good time, I decided to rent here again - what a disappointment... I booked an ATV rental for my 17yo son and completed all requisite forms on line. Upon arriving at the beach location the required 1 hour in advance - I find that all the paperwork has to be completed yet again - only this time with the following caveats - 1. All youth i.e. under 18 require you the adult to monitor and "stay with your child" at all times while on the dunes, so you can either spring for your own rental or risk taking your vehicle onto the dunes - which requires an orange flag be displayed (think bicycle flag), which Steves just happens to sell for $16.00 each and offers no means to mount it. In addition you are now required to take a video of the rig you are renting and highlight any broken plastic fairings, bent or damaged frames and overall condition. Thus is required regardless of paying the optional damage waiver - I should note that their rental units are well used and of the rigs I inspected all of them have some type of damage - so renter beware, be sure to well document the rigs condition. In summary - many of the "policies" are not referenced on their WWW and when noted to staff, I received a silent response and look of well tough S*$t... Next time I will rent elsewhere. read more

I did try to resolve my issues with this business prior to posting on Yelp however, I received NO response. I must say I was very disappointed in their customer service and the employees that I dealt with were very rude. Upon entry - there are 2 counters on either side - BUT no signs as to what is what. The place was total chaos. We waited in line for at least 45 minutes and once we were at the counter and picked the ATVs that we wanted and time frame etc... we were told to go to this back room to fill out the paperwork and then to get BACK in line!! What? The craziness of it all. They simply did not care how long we waited. When I pointed out to the employee that the other counter was processing the paperwork and not making the customers get out of line, all she said is "well, that's how SHE does it. I gave this one star because that all I could do nothing worse to revive this place is horrible the most horrible customer service . Talk very rudely don't know how to run there own systems and over charged are group of 15 $300 extra for a deposit fee when it was only 100 each and she said that we could deal with it our selfs and if we crash that we could pay each other back . This whole place was so horrible all day it was so rude and unjust . Damn contracts took so long because they are legal government docs and took bullshit claims about changing our atv or to get a better atv they said its to much of hassle I think the extra 50 bucks would be worth your damn contact due over . Where to start came here for the first time and was hoping to get a good experience since me and my friends were celebrating a birthday weekend get away we're scheduled for the early bird special which after even coming here Megan told my friend a price that was not accurate and also did not send a confirmation email explaining the cancellation fee or the terms and condition first issue.Once we did arrive megan made it clear we were late and we would only have the remaining time to ride ATV which was fine but then the problem occurred when we ask how much we were quoted on the price then we get their its all these hidden fees 100 holding deposit each person you will get the funds back same day if you have cash and if using card 1-5 business days which was a inconvenience since we were only spending a day out there. Then we never knew you had to pay for goggles rental and If we would have received a email with all the details we would have known their was a cancellation fee five of us which meant 500 dollars would be charged no matter if we rode steve's ATV or not .After Megan contacting steve asking what could they do to help basically was no help in trying to accommodate our needs or even clarification and did i mention I never received nothing in writing including none of these terms If I would have none i would have simple understood the policy and nothing in writing so instead we choose to go to the place across the street where it was cheaper no holding deposit and also great customer service in fixing our problem at Angellos where the price was cheaper and also goggles were included in price. read more
