First time ATVing! The rental reservation process was very easy to do online, and check in took less than 20 minutes. Slightly confusing that there are two different locations (one to check in, one where you end up parking and then you have to find the guys who drive your party to the actual place the ATVs are kept) and I definitely think a slightly longer explanation of how to use the vehicles wouldn't hurt but overall everyone had fun! Hubby and I have been wanting to go ATV riding for the longest time but never gotten the chance to go. For Hubby's birthday I suggested we head out to Pismo Beach so that we can finally go ATV riding and he was excited! I was searching around for a place to rent ATVs and there are many different places that you can rent from. I read reviews and decided to pick BJ's ATV Rentals and they did not disappoint! I made the booking the night before and I remember reading reviews where we needed to come about 30 minutes to an hour before the time you chose to go over safety instructions. We ended up showing up about 45 minutes before our scheduled time since we were super excited to get it started. We signed some forms, went over safety instructions and we were also given a map to show us the markers and restrooms so we would know where we were in case we got lost. Everybody was so friendly and very informative. I read a lot of reviews that said for beginners it usually takes about 30 minutes to get the hang of driving the ATVs, but Hubby and I actually picked up pretty quick. The instructor that showed us how to start the ATV and everything was super detailed and we were on our way in less than 5 minutes. We had such an amazing time and 2 hours was more than enough! Drove down to ride the atvs. I havent been in over 7 years but this is my first time using this company. We were greeted and helped as soon as we arrived. We signed the paperwork paid and were on our way. It was about $140 for two hours. The only part that was a little confusing was you drive to a location and walk down on the beach and then a truck picks you up. I dont remember doing that. Other than that the people were extremely nice especially the person who told us how to use the atvs. We were stuck once and they came pretty quickly. Overall a great experience. read more

We had a blast! The staff were super nice and patient. My bank froze my card for suspicious activity while we were at Pismo, but the lady at the counter patiently waited until cards where all unblocked. She was so sweet! Joe, who drives the shuttle/suburban, was really helpful and gave us great tips on where to eat and stay in Pismo. The folks handing out helmets and ATVs were super friendly and helpful too. We'll definitely be back! Make sure to follow the directions they give you to get to their spot on the beach. The directions were clear, but I can see how people might get lost if they don't stick to them. When you get to the Pismo Beach Dunes entrance, good luck! Hopefully, they haven't run out of day passes. We parked on the street near the entrance, which wasn't too bad, but there was a line of cars at 5pm on Saturday getting turned away because they were sold out. Booked ATVs for a group of 7 during our Pismo trip. My husband booked the reservation and was told to go to the Pier Ave, however when we arrived the front staff was NOT HELPFUL. She said she couldn't help us and that we needed to go to the West Grand Ave address. My husband called the number on the email and told them what had happened and the staff told us they would be able to help us at the West Grand Ave. We did all the paperwork / checking at west grand Ave and then were directed to go back to the Pier Ave and go meet the shuttle. We were told that BJ's and Steve's were going to become one atv rental. The miscommunication and going back and forth from the two addresses was very inconvenient and unorganized. read more

Was definitely better when it was bjs and not owned by Steve's. Steve's i get it is more about the safety videos and wasting you time. Why watch a 30min safety video and then not even confirm if you even watched it or understand any of it. Especially if it's not in a language you understand. Also bjs would allow you to leave cash deposit and Steve's aka "new bjs" only card. And all these threats on how many ways and things they will charge you for when you return. The staff they retained from bjs is the only good thing about the place now tbh. Had a 2 hour ride booked at 3pm. Arrived at 230 shuttle didn't get us to the spot on the beach until 310. Now we watch the 30min video and take the pics of the atvs. We hit the dunes by 340 to 350 and only have a hour ride. Then was told if we're late it's another 50.00 per 15min. But they are the ones stealing time smh. Be aware of the policies and read online first. Also make sure your early. Btw Steve's will be taking the bjs name soon so don't fall for it thinking it was the same good ownership. Bjs was taken over by the city and sold there company to Steve's. Wish I got my money back for the lost hour tbh but overall still good bikes and friendly staff just sucks your scammed from your money in crazy ways. read more

I had a great experience renting from BJ's so I've gone back to them since. Saddened to hear they are out of commission by Oct 2021 as Pismo beach will be converted to a bird sanctuary. So go before they shut down! Easy, quick service. For beginners, I recommend the kymco 300, fully automatic. It's just easier. We got the semi automatics (Honda 250cc) this most recent visit. The main difference is the 250cc has several gears. There's a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it's really fun. A tip, just because there are 3+ gears, it doesn't mean you have to use them. Go with whatever speed you're most comfortable with. You can book online or just go into the store (pay with debit card instead of credit card to waive fees 3%!) $275 total for 2hrs x 2 people. Next, watch the instructional video outside. Drive down the block and park in the free parking lot. They have an old SUV driving you to the ATV spot to get helmets and the ATV. Get ready for a great time! One last tip, stand up and look how steep the hill is before attempting at high speeds. Might just save your life or body aches. read more

We checked this place out because one of the people in our party had a great experience the first time he rented ATVs. Well, that was a few years ago. We noticed the ATVs/quads and the "Rhino" were not very well maintained. We had a 400 and during use the chain fell off, and we had to call and have them bring us another one. The Rhino began malfunctioning before we even left the staging site. Ultimately, the rhino was a poor choice on our par, but oh well. It began hesitating while driving, lights were flashing, and it was even backfiring. I think we'll go back and try them out again because the customer service was great and no complaints in that department. Maybe we'll be more deliberate when receiving the "subpar" equipment?! The entire BJ team is so amazing! They are the only ATV rental company I use when we visit Pismo. I've used their services at least four times- The front office (where you pay and fill out paperwork) is so friendly and thorough with instructions, the shuttle drivers are very polite and sociable, the team giving the helmets and equipment is professional and fun. My last visit (9/2/22) was perfect; weather was great and shockingly the beach wasn't busy. We had a really nice experience. I had read about difficulties renting off road vehicles at Pismo. I decided against renting from the biggest of the outfits based on comments I read here. I decided to reserve with BJ's because they for sure had the 'side by side' four wheel drive UTV we wanted. Everything came off without a hitch. The check-in was fast and straight forward. We were able to park our motor home next to where the shuttle took us out to the dunes where the vehicles are. The Honda Talon four wheel drive was nearly new and in perfect mechanical condition. SERVICE FEES - 3.5% credit card fee for $1000 hold, but a credit card is required? Nickel and dime... There is a 1000 hold that you have to pay 3.5% fee on top plus 3.5% of your rental price. so your fees can get a bit much. - $40 for gas fee -- we did one hour rental. No way it cost $40 for an hour of operations - $1000 hold. They hold $1000 from your credit card immediately but they return it 3-5 business days? Why can't they return it immediately to you credit card if they can pull it from there immediately? another nickel and dime... PRICE -High for what is it. - You have to drive 10 minutes out before hitting the dunes so you don't get your full hour of fun, you get 40 minutes because 10 minutes to come back. EXPERIENCE -Of course it was fun. Would I do it again? I'd rather rent one for a whole day from a place that's close to where I live. I'll get more fun out of it for a better price. And if it wasn't fun, this place would be a 1 star. Nothing unique about their rental model, of how they operate their business. All about the cash. read more

Rented two 400s and two 150s last minute and they were able to accommodate. Had so much fun we ended up returning the 400s half an hour early from our three hour rental. The 150s had some issues but they were able to swap them out since we were stuck about 50 meters away. Best experience ever. Friendly, straight-to-the point, professional, and knowledgeable guys in the front desk and the guys working on the beach. I had a great time at the dunes...after the initial nervousness. This is the perfect activity for thrill seekers :) I received great service via phone and when we arrived there. The only con was parking. We weren't given clear instructions and ended up with a ticket. How it works is that another vehicle will drive you out to the dunes after you've parked and checked in. I organized for a group of 6, and I called a week in advance. Everything ran smoothly. They took my card info for the booking, and explained everything, such as: 1. Wear close toed shoes 2. Carry a backpack to keep car keys, phones, etc 3. There is a $100 deposit that you'll get back if the ATV is not damaged. I recommend cash! 4. Choose from 2 or 4 hours of fun (2 was enough for us) Personal tips from my experience: -Make a reservation ahead of time -Wear a face mask to cover your mouth and nose since sand will be flying everywhere -Wear sunglasses -Wear long pants -Wear sunscreen (I had sun burn on my shoulders) It wasn't hot when I went and it was actually windy. The price was around $80/person for 2 hours. The cars were gear shifting ones, not automatic. As a newbie, if I can do it, you can do it too! I did sprain a finger from going too fast, soo be careful! I definitely recommend doing this at least once in your life. You won't regret it. read more

Tons of fun! I'd give a 5 star review for the ATV riding experience. The service I'd give 4 stars. I was told at check-in and read on the website that goggles could be rented for free, just need to put down a $10 deposit. When we were shuttled out to the dunes, the staff manned at the ATV station with all the gear said that they have no such service. Since i was told there would be goggles available at the dunes, I didn't bring any eyewear or sun glasses which would have helped as I did get sand in my eyes a few times. Also would note that there were a few rental companies right at the Pismo Beach park entrance with far better rates. But not sure of their service.
