Not once. Not twice. THREE. TIMES. And every single time, we were left sitting there for 30+ minutes, making several calls to their so-called helpline before anyone finally showed up. No proactive help. No check-ins. Just "call again and wait." The most horrifying part? Young kids were stranded out there with their dads for HOURS. No shade, no clear timeline, no concern for safety. If you think this is "just an inconvenience," imagine your kids sitting there wondering when help will come. Completely unacceptable. When the mechanic finally arrived each time, instead of fixing the real issue, we were later blamed for the breakdown, told it was "belt damage" that WE supposedly caused. Absolute nonsense. Then comes the real kicker: they refused to let us get on the return bus unless we paid $200. Pay first, or stay stranded. That's not customer service, that's extortion. AFTER all this, they suddenly claimed there is a $25 belt insurance that supposedly protects customers from belt damage. Funny how this was never shown, never explained, never mentioned at booking or check-in. Convenient how it only comes up AFTER they decide to charge you. Reading other one-star reviews confirms this is a clear pattern: * Old ATVs breaking down * Customers stranded for long periods * Blame shifted to riders * Forced payments * Owner responding with the same lazy "no refund policy" line That "no refund policy" seems to only apply when THEY fail -- not when customers are put in unsafe situations. This would have been a five star review, but the staff took the opportunity to wring every last dollar they could out of us before we left. We rented four ATVs and paid for the full damage and belt coverage. My friends and I enjoyed the two hours on four ATVs and were fairly conservative during our ride, but we did tip an ATV over in the sand. Despite there being no damage to the ATV, my friend admitted that the ATV rolled while doing a cookie (he was really just turning). We were told we would be charged for it, but when we turned in our gear, the staffer demanded 300$ cash, the entire damage deposit for a single ATV. There was no assessment of damage to the ATVs, only the sand on the handlebars was used as evidence. The ATVs were in poor shape when we rented them: every bit of plastic was ziptied onto the ATVs, and one was missing the instrument cluster already. When I asked why my four 60$ damage and belt waivers didn't cover it, he said that cookies were "reckless driving", which was not explicitly stated in the videos or documentation. Since he had four sets of 300$ damage deposits for the four ATVs, he said that if we didn't pay cash directly, he would have to take 500$ from our deposit for tipping the ATV to make up for the State Park fees and taxes. But this was all based off the unstated policy that anything that happens is worth the entire damage deposit (or more). There was not 300$ worth of damage on the ATV, and there was no statement or agreement that the entire damage deposit would be waived at the drop of a hat. That's not how damage deposits work. I can understand charging a fee for some incident to help offset cumulative damage that occurs over time, but our waiver should have offset the cost, and the shady strong arm tactics holding our entire deposit hostage over an imaginary damage cost was outright scummy. If you rent from them, they will be friendly, and then look for every last bit of money they can wring out of you without causing a fight. read more

Super unprofessional people with horrid customer service. The California State beach is closed and they waited until the last minute to notify me. They called and offered a rain check to their Las Vegas or Michigan locations. Um, who is going to leave the state to use their credit? Weird. I suggested they refund my money in full and that is where the fun began. Rude employees who are completely incompetent. No management available to expedite a refund and one person said, "do what you have to do" when I told them I would be disputing the charge with my bank. Which is exact what I did. Overall this was a disappointing and scary experience, largely because of Sunbuggy but also because of the dunes in general. With Sunbuggy I made a reservation two months in advance after researching the exact vehicle that we wanted. On the day of our reservation, they didn't have the vehicle that I reserved (which is especially upsetting because the price of your experience is dependent on the price of the vehicle that you rent). I appreciated that they tried to make up for it by letting us try two other vehicles. The map that is provided is WOEFULLY lacking! Granted, a map about sand is challenging in pretty much all circumstances, which is why there should be signs in the dunes to help you navigate better. About 3/4's of the dunes are entirely fenced off right now but this isn't indicated on the map. We got completely turned around and trapped in zone 4 for over an hour. We asked four separate people for directions, including a park ranger, and literally every single person had different instructions on how to get out, none of which were accurate. We called the Sunbuggy helpline but it is someone that simply has the map in front of them and can only dispatch for drivers to come help if you're stuck in the sand. Once we finally were able to make our way out, we did get five seconds worth of wet sand only on the driver side door (there was no wet sand ANYWHERE else on the vehicle, just on the driver door) and we were charged $200 for this!! After being charged, they tried to sell us on coming back again for a discounted price (cue eye roll here). They literally wiped the sand off of the door and then put the buggy back in rotation. Now a note about sand dunes... I didn't realize that sand dunes are essentially sand cliffs that you can't see until you're literally at the very edge! It was terrifying and the sand blindness was super disorienting, which is why signage in the dunes feels completely necessary. If you get lost, don't go along the fence edges, they're surprisingly treacherous; follow the numbered markers in the middle of the dunes only. This was a very expensive, very disappointing experience that I do not recommend. read more

What was supposed to be a fun and exciting day turned into an extremely frustrating, chaotic, and honestly disrespectful experience. We feel like we were robbed -- of our time, our money, and our trust. We had a reservation scheduled for 2:00 PM, and we showed up early, excited and ready to go. But from the start, everything was disorganized. No one gave us clear directions, the staff seemed annoyed we were even asking questions, and we ended up waiting around for over an hour and a half. We didn't even get on a buggy until 3:30 PM -- and that was only after chasing people down and asking what was going on multiple times. When we finally got the buggies, we were given two vehicles. One of them broke down after just 20 minutes in the dunes. Not only was that dangerous, but it completely ruined the already shortened time we had left. The equipment was in terrible shape, and honestly, we didn't feel safe riding them to begin with. It felt like the company just wanted to push people through and didn't care if the vehicles were even functioning. The transportation to the dunes was also ridiculous -- not well explained, uncomfortable, and made us feel like we were being shuffled around like cattle. The staff was rude, dismissive, and didn't seem to care at all that our entire day was ruined. We calmly voiced our concerns, hoping they would take accountability or offer a partial refund for the wasted time and broken vehicle. I had rented 2 dune buggies at the Pismo location 3-4 wks prior to the date. On the day of the rentals as we were starting our drive, I got a text message with every excuse in the world about being sick, only person in that day, etc. Then proceeding to tell me that the beach was closed for the week to dune buggies so our rental was cancelled. She then told me to contact Sunbuggy via email for a refund. I did so immediately then was told to send an email to another email, which I did. I proceeded to email 2 more times over the next 3 wks and have yet to hear back. I called and a nice woman, Shannon, in Vegas answered. I explained the situation. She said she would give the information to the appropriate person the next morning and have them contact me. 2 days later I had never heard from anyone. I called again and asked for Shannon. She said the right person, Matt, would be back in 15 minutes and she would tell him to contact me immediately. It is now the next day and I still have not heard back from anyone. To begin with I should have automatically been refunded. I should not be going through all of this trying to get my over $700 back on my credit card. 1 Star - Very Disappointing and Stressful Experience We had a really disappointing experience with Sun Buggy Rentals in Pismo Beach and I would not recommend them, especially for families. About 10 minutes into our ride, the buggy completely broke down. We were stranded in the sand dunes with two kids, which was both stressful and unsafe. We tried calling the company repeatedly -- it took six to seven calls before we could finally reach someone. Even after that, it took them around 30 minutes to come out and help us. Instead of taking responsibility for the equipment failure, they blamed us, claiming that we went into the "wrong zone." There was no clear explanation or warning provided beforehand, and nothing indicated that we had done anything wrong. To make matters worse, they then charged us an additional $200 on top of everything else. The negligence of this company left us paying for their mistakes. My family and i have rented before and loved riding the dunes, were always very safe and mellow it was a family trip we were being exceedingly safe driving at 15 mph when our car broke down. We checked the car and out of 4 springs three were clearly brand new, and the broken one, completely rusted and old. We were nearing the end of the hour we booked and were stranded in the sand. 30 minutes on the dunes in cold weather and we're finally picked up in an again less than ideal vehicle, when we get back we are expected to pay for the obvious old and rusted part, which turned out to be an issue with the suspension for anyone wondering, and not only for the part itself but also for the time it will take to repair. We watched the safety video read the important information stayed in safe zones and followed every rule possible. Vehicles have wear and tear I understand that but it should be fixed before customers are put in the vehicle, and not to mention being expected to pay for the entire thing. They gave us an old vehicle that was bound to fail, our path shows that we followed the safest most responsible route possible, I understand paying for some of the repair but we were left paying for the entire thing leaving us renovating their faulty equipment. We were calm in negotiating and the staff was negligent and acted as if we were at fault despite evidence of faulty equipment. We are experienced drivers and have done this before we know what a quality RZR looks like and what we were given was below standard. We were safe and did everything in our power to avoid this type of situation the company was unreasonable in making us the people at fault. When they needed a new repair they simply let us look like we broke it when in actuality they needed to get it fixed anyway and instead of using there own money they gave us a terrible experience which resulted in being a free repair for them. read more

Disappointed and taken advantage of -- be cautious renting here. We were really looking forward to our dune buggy ride, but unfortunately, the experience left us feeling frustrated and taken advantage of. We were given an old, worn-out RZR that was clearly way past its prime -- we've rented many before. We're not new to this. We've done plenty of off-roading and driven RZRs before -- we know how to treat the machines and respect the terrain. We followed all their rules, drove responsibly, and weren't pushing the vehicle hard at all. In fact, we were probably some of the most careful people out there that day. But partway through the ride, the shock blew out. Honestly, with how aged the RZR was, it felt inevitable. This was clearly a case of wear and tear, not reckless use -- any experienced rider would've seen this coming just from looking at it. Still, when we returned, the company immediately blamed us and made us pay for the damage. We asked how they determine what's regular wear vs. customer fault, and they couldn't give us an answer. Claimed they had to assume negligence on our part. It really felt like they just wait for something to break on these run-down vehicles, then pass the bill onto whoever's unlucky enough to be driving it at the time. The blown shock was rusted, pictures down below, but he insisted that this happens because of the beach, not age but none of the others were nearly as rusty? He claimed it was 900 dollars for just the part but did not show any evidence of where that number came from. Looking online I don't see anything like that. I've seen around 900 dollars for 4 shocks but we were only replacing one, this could be done as he admitted to replacing the front left one very recently. Some friends think they took advantage of us because we were a group of mostly women. My mom was rightfully upset and overwhelmed that she was being told she had to pay 2000 dollars but was calm with them. They were rude and completely not understanding, never acknowledged that it was old and kept insisting it had to have been something we did. It's really disappointing, because the dunes themselves are amazing and we were excited for this ride. But the way this situation was handled made us feel blamed for something that wasn't our fault -- and it turned a fun outing into a bad experience. My family and I took a vehicle out. While we were riding a soft patch of sand gave out causing our vehicle to roll and one just ahead of us. It was an issue with the terrain and not from negligence. Fortunately, everyone was ok with only a broken taillight on the vehicle. After it happened we drove the vehicle without incident or issue back. After arriving we told them what happened. The employee did a cursory inspection of the vehicle which lasted two minutes. Although I paid for "belt" insurance and incidental insurance; I was told that rolling a vehicle would cost me $2,000 or $3,000 if the owner was there. I am not sure what is used to assess the vehicle's damage, but I can't imagine he could tell any of the things he said could be wrong. He mentioned changing the oil and giving the vehicle a once over. For that to cost $3,000 or even $2,000 seems steep. If they took down my information and then spoke about it later, showed me a bill, perhaps. But the entire encounter was very pressured and hastily done. We were looking for a great day in the dunes and Sunbuggies seemed like a good choice at first. After completing the paperwork and watching the safety video we got on the shuttle. We were filled with excitement! With our helmets in hand we got in our buggy and started to enjoy ourselves. We were taking video and all of a sudden after 35 minutes of riding the front wheel looked like it fell off!!!! The company did quickly respond to our break down , we were surprised to hear that we were being blamed for this misfortune and would need to pay an additional $200 dollars for the damage . The video clearly showed no cause for this failure on the operators part, they did not care . This is the reason I cannot recommend this business. First of all they tell us it's mandatory to be there an hour early and nobody shows up until after our 9am start time....we didn't get on our sand rail until 10:15. Phone number to call nobody answers, not very professional. Their equipment looks pretty beat up. Our sand rail was a hunk of junk! Rusted and tuned way down to barely hit 20 miles per hour. Such a rough ride that after 30 minutes we drove back to just be done with our rental experience but the crew working there were very nice and offered 2 quads instead and they were a lot of fun. On Sat. 10/25/25 we came to the booth after closing time while employees were parking trailers and trying to close the booth. We were well received and all of our questions were answered by a very patient young lady that I unfortunately cannot remember her name. I made a mistake on my reservation and got help fixing it from another young lady with great customer service and patience that I can't tell you her name either . We arrived today Sunday 10/26 and everything went very easy. The staff gave us great suggestions as it was our first time. My wife and I drove 2 side by side UTVs all over the dunes for 2 hours and had a fantastic time. We booked 7 ATVs for 2 hours on Saturday, Aug 9 from 11am-1pm. Overall most of us had a lot of fun, but we also experienced some frustrations. The staff was friendly and tried to be helpful. But the training could be improved. We arrived a little more than an hour before our booked time. Some of us had already watched the safety video. There was only one lady working. Although we had already signed the smart contracts online, there was additional paperwork that I had to sign, after watching the safety video. The first time we lined up to talked to her was for her to explain the paperwork and the video that we needed to watch. The second time we lined up (10:30am) was after we had watched the video on site and were ready to sign. Then she asked us to return a 3rd time at 10:50am to pick up the helmets. We got in line at 10:45am and made it to her at 11:10am. I told her that I would be needing the largest helmet that she has. She proceeded to ask me to try 2 smaller sizes before giving me the largest helmet that she had, which was the only one that fit. Whether she was aware, she was doing an amazing job of wasting my time. Friendly lady, but did not seem very concerned about how long customers have been waiting. We got out to the shuttle pickup place by 11:30 and then got paired up with ATVs by noon, which is when they started our clock. Our booking was for 11am - 1pm. The shuttle driver was friendly. The ATV person did a great job of warning the kids about being careful. Halfway through our fun, one of the ATVs died and would not restart. We tried the techniques that we had been taught but nothing worked. So I called support. After over 15 minutes, two gentlemen arrived and one was able to start it after fiddling with it. It seems he was ready to leave. I had to deliberately ask for more information on how to deal with the situation for him to explain what might be happening and what to do about it. He offered to give us an additional 5 minutes on our clock even though the entire delay was much more than 5 minutes. After he left, the ATV died two more times within 5 minutes, but I was able to get it restarted. Near the end of our time, on the way back to the return area, it died one more time but restarted after a couple of tries. I jokingly refer to this ATV as the Frankenstein ATV because of all of the stitches on it (see photos). I told the ATV guy about my experience and he noted down the vehicle number. I think I would only do ATVing in the sand again if I don't have to worry about time being wasted during check in and time being wasted due to sub-standard equipment. read more

We took the vehicles out there and had a blast. We got stuck in the dune 3x and utilized the company's Rescue/service process to rescue us. I really wanted SunBuggy Rentals to be a fun part of my trip, but it turned out to be one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had with a rental/tour company. They were short staffed, and while we were required to show up one hour BEFORE our start (with many threats in the contract of no refunds if late etc), they did not get us into a car until about 2hours AFTER hour scheduled start time. We had a whole day planned after, and their delay forced us to change our later plans. The equipment was clearly neglected. The steering on one of the buggies we rented broke down within 5 minutes of being out in the dunes and they did not seem to care. We put that driver in one of the other vehicles after they told us they would not come for 20-30 mins. Communication was non‑existent. We had to call multiple times, send several emails, and yet no one was available or willing to provide help. All of that just to be handed excuses or told someone might contact us "within 48 hours." They gave us a very small refund, and were so rude, the entire time. Also, the "safety" or "service" videos and orientations felt hollow -- delays kept creeping in, their staff seemed disorganized, and their promises, like making up lost time, turned out to be meaningless. We booked 2 ATVs and he made sure we got into the right ATVs with the right CCs to make sure we had a good time. And I will say, we had one of the best times. On January 19th I was invited on a trip with my sister and nephews to rent some ATV's at Pismo Beach. I had low expectations from the rental company, but they were somehow able to absolutely CRUSH those low expectations. The units were rusty and poorly maintained, as expected. In fact they give you an emergency number to call in case you have problems... you will have problems. We rented three 450's and one 250 for the minor who was with us. The first time that the 250 broke down we waited 40 minutes for a response. The mechanic came out and blamed us for "not knowing" how to use the equipment. He got it running... barely. We accepted it and tried to press on. 10 minutes later we noticed fuel dripping from the bottom of the engine, and so we called back. I attempted to reconnect the fuel line but it disintegrated in my fingers and the engine burnt my hand. It was getting late and cold and we already waited for over 30 minutes. I called the emergency number and explained that we needed to return the other three units and that we would leave this one in a visible location. I gave the minor a ride back on my unit and we slowly made our way back before the time cut off. The mechanic chastised us excessively about how unsafe it was to bring him back like that. I asked if we should have left him out there on the dunes and he said that would have been better for us to do. I disagree. After turning in our helmets they complained that they couldn't find the unit and that it "may have been stolen". I drove back to the ATV return point and found a very irritated mechanic. After a few moments they returned with the unit and it had sand on the handle bar. The plastic guard was twisted as well (thank God that we took video of the equipment before leaving). They accused us of rolling the unit... then he accused us of also rolling one of the 450's. This never happened. "Maybe it happened when you weren't looking" this gang of people kept saying. I insisted that it never happened and that we stayed together the whole time. They tried to "gas light" me and acted as a gang of bullies. I was so angry that I had to simply leave , and I had to wait to cool down even to write this review. These people are bullies, liars, and cheats. They also kept my $300 deposit. We had a group of 8 rent from sunbuggy rentals last weekend and had to exchange 2 off the bat and had another one break down and leave someone stranded for 1+ hours. This was even after the remainder of the group got back on time to let them know about our stranded friend. When they finally picked him up and brought the ATV back, they accused him of breaking the ATV and held the security deposit for all ATV's that were booked. Sunbuggy rentals will steal your deposit and claim it is to repair their already faulty vehicles. Do not rent from this company. read more

My two sons and I had a fantastic experience with Sunbuggy. It was our first time riding ATVs. They sent the safety video ahead of time which was helpful. It may be a good idea for kids especially to watch it more than once. Also, I recommend doing at least two hours. The two hours really flew by for us, as some reviews have said. (We also drove 3.5 hours to get there, so really wanted to make it worth it). Customer service was fantastic from the start. Ivy and another person helped us sign in. The process went pretty smoothly, but you need to get there at least an hour ahead of your time slot to wait in line, get fitted for helmets, and review and sign all the safety rules. They then shuttle you to the dunes where the ATVs are located. Because it's by the ocean, you can expect some salt corrosion on the vehicles, but do inspect them before you start. We got stuck in the sand almost immediately because I had to slow down to check on my sons behind me, which caused one of them to slow down too much and therefore get stuck. (You need adequate speed and momentum to avoid getting stuck). There was only one person available to help when we called the help line. So it did take over half an hour for the manager to come out, but he was understanding and gave us all the time back and a bit more. Most of the time when we got a little stuck we were able to lift ourselves out. One of my sons is on the spectrum, so without having a map in front of him, he accidentally followed other private ATVs into the red zone and couldn't see or hear me calling him to stop. They can charge you for that, but they just gave a warning. My son has an extremely difficult time with being told he's broken any rules, so I'm glad they didn't yell at him when they came to help. It's pricey but finding adventurous activities like this that we could all do is rare, so it was more than worth it. read more

We had reservation on Friday and Saturday. They had plenty of equipment, went over the rules, stressed safety and fun! We had 4 adults and 3 kids, aged 10-11. We all had a great time! Saturday, they do extra safety measures by having staff drive around the various zones and checking in with everyone. Robert had a great safety speech, and helped everyone keep safe. He had to help me out when I got my 450cc stuck in the sand. Bottom line, we had a great time both days! read more

My friend and I had a spur of the moment decision to shot up and go riding out on the dunes and we walked up to Sunbuggy to rent a 2 seat RZR for 1 hour. After a quick safety video and some paperwork we were out to the dunes and had a blast! We were even upgraded to a Maverick too! read more

Awful experience, we had 8 people, Told to show up at 1pm for our 2pm-4pm rental, they didn't have our buggies ready until 3:45pm, we set out and about 20 minutes into our 2 hour rental, one buggy's engine failed, the other buggy had hardly enough power to do anything, we towed back and they refused a refund. We wanted 2 buggies, 2 hours, at 2pm. None of those happened and we now may have to take legal action to get our money back. read more
