When we went looking for a contractor to build the new deck, we found Austin Outdoor Builders through their listing on Yelp and their website. Kit called me within a couple of days of my email, and really impressed me with his knowledge and experience with decks. I was concerned about City of Austin inspections, and he was very reassuring, pointing out that he talks to the inspectors by phone regularly. He booked a time to go over the engineering plan and the site, and again, I was very impressed when we met. He spoke of extensive experience in building decks, and asked questions about the site and the plan that reflected this. The quote was not cheap, but what is these days? My main concern was that they do the job properly and work with COA inspectors. Work started within a couple of weeks, and I was quite pleased with how the workers did their job. The only delay was to find an engineer to certify the footings before pouring the concrete. I had originally expressed concern about the durability of the support timbers, and Kit offered to coat them before laying the decking. Imagine my surprise when I found them painting the framing with high end professional oil based enamel! The only other delay was the week of the ice storm when Austin was closed for the duration. I was lucky to have family to remove the trees that fell on the lumber in the yard, because the next Monday they were back at work. Both the framing and final inspections went very smoothly and I am delighted with my new deck. I recommend Austin Outdoor Builders to anyone needing a deck.

I'll talk more about our full experience below, but a couple of months ago we had a terrible storm in our neighborhood and a very large tree (at least 25 feet tall) fell directly on our fence. Despite a direct hit, the fence stood firm with only a small dent in the cap board. Talk about quality work! More broadly, our experience was great. We worked with a super helpful person laying out the task who made some fantastic design suggestions (totally not on our radar) that we're really happy with. The work was done efficiently to mimimize the amount of time we had to keep our dog out of the yard. And when seasonal shifting made it impossible to open our gate, they came and fixed it months after the work was done. Great experience all around and would recommend to anyone.

That's how I found Johnstone Supply. They stock and sell wholesale supplies to the refrigeration and HVAC (that's Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning, not vacuum cleaners, in case you were wondering) contractors, and they will also sell to the public. If you're buying a number of units, they'll give you a better price. I brought in a sample of each HVAC register, and the salesman measured it for me and checked the grid to make sure I was buying the right design and size. He gave me a bulk discount that was below what the big boxes wanted for their lesser quality products. Great service! FYI, they also have a new store in Lakeway/Hudson Bend, off Hwy 620.

Mike met with us and gave us a quick tour and then started to ask us questions to ensure he was recommending the best fridge and appliances for our family lifestyle and needs. He knew his product and was able to find something that was readily available (because of covid, most manufactures are on back order right now). We purchased a fridge and set up a delivery the following week. So when their crew arrived to deliver the fridge, we realized we had a miscommunication. It was my fault for assuming installation was included when in fact only delivery was included in my price. To my wife's relief, Mike immediately jumped on the situation and organized another crew to arrive and install the fridge. Rick helped us to source ideal materials for our kitchen and made suggestions that helped enhance the functionality of the space. Additionally, we have a toddler and his team did an excellent job working to accomodate nap schedules, playgroups, and cleaning up diligently to ensure our little one's safety in our home during construction. Several months after the remodel, when I had one or two minor issues (so small that I can no longer even recall what it was), Rick came out personally to fix them and ensure that everything was still meeting his standard of excellence. One of my dogs recently chewed one of the cabinet facings that housed the built in trash can, and Rick- who paid careful attention to my love for my baking and cookbook collection- also helped me to come up with a cookbook cabinet solution that will be built to put in its place (and will be far less enticing to our hungry pups!).
