One of the many, many Manta Rays that we saw on our trip.
    Sue J.

Wow- what a trip! Night snorkeling with the Manta Rays was an unbelievable experience. The Eka Canoe Adventures team appeared to really care about our experience and was committed to ensuring we were safe at all times. Kia, who jumped in the water with us, was very knowledgable about the Manta Rays and was such a pleasure to have as a guide. I highly recommend Eka Canoe Adventures to anyone looking for the Manta Rays experience in Kona.

My husband and I were staying at the Sheraton and really wanted to swim with the Mantas. We ended up booking through Eka because of the close vicinity to the hotel and because of the shuttle to and from the launch site. On the night of our adventure, we were picked up by the golf cart right on time and driven down to the harbor. The boat itself wasn't too impressive, but it didn't really matter since it's job was to just take us out into the water. Once we got out, we met up with a bunch of other boats that were already anchored and set up with their lights. We were provided noodles, snorkel gear, and spring suits, and then we jumped into the water. We all hung onto a surfboard that had handles and lights and our guide attached us to another boat's board. I was skeptical at first because I felt like the red headed stepchild boat, but everyone seemed to know each other. At first we didn't see any rays, but once our guide moved us, we saw a TON of rays!!! I was 8 months pregnant at the time so everyone told me that the rays would love me...and they were right! We had like over 20 mantas swim up and flip right underneath us! They came so close their bellies touched us! We had such a fun time in the water and were so glad we had a GoPro to capture it all. The ride back, we were provided with hot chocolate which hit the spot! We had a great experience. As for the crew: Our guide was young, but she was nice and got the job done. The captain of the boat was more seasoned and professional. PS- At the time of booking, you need to provide your shoe size and your wetsuit size, so be prepared.

We booked a same day manta tour. Great price. David and Danielle were super hosts. They didn't waste anytime so we could have maximum time in the water. There were at least 12+ rays. They gave us lots of info about them and answered our questions during the dive. We would definitely recommend anyone, any experience to try. Also the Hot chocolate at the end was a very nice touch. If you do only one activity on the Big Island - DO THIS! This was hands down the highlight of the trip. Eka Canoe has a small boat, so our crew size was small, just ourselves and three other people. We chose them because we were told they had a Manta Ray guarantee, and as the only boat that goes out three times in a night - if you don't see them the first time, we could rebook that same night possible. This was completely unnecessary however, as our first and only trip out on the water DID NOT DISAPPOINT. This is not a free snorkel, you don't even need fins, there's lots of groups going out in the water. Each holding onto a surfboard with a large light facing down below the waves. The light draws in the plankton, and the plankton draws in the Manta Rays. They are absolutely amazing, we saw TONS OF RAYS (and don't worry, unlike stingrays they don't have stingers), doing barrel roll after barrel roll inches from our faces. We've done a lot of snorkeling in Hawaii, and elsewhere in the world, but this was definitely a unique experience. The crew, Rob and Chloe were excellent - and had a nice hot cocoa waiting for us once we got back on the boat. Definitely an unforgettable amazing experience. CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH!!!

I was told that this was a 'MUST' and it totally was! Eka provided a great experience with a beautiful boat and an amazing crew. The boat only seats 6 so it was a much more intimate tour than others offered around town. We saw SO many Manta Rays, was an amazing experience!

a manta ray during our night-time snorkeling adventure. the date/time is inaccurate.

It's obvious they love what they do. Val was very sweet and caring with assisting everyone from the beginning to the end. Very engaging and informative during the snorkeling. I stayed on the boat while my cousin was out with Val. Rob and Seth kept the boat close enough for me to see the manta rays and hear the group. Was told the water was very cold. It's not cold while waiting on the boat. They have a bin for people to keep their stuff stored and dry. No shoes on the boat. They have a bin for that too. Also no water shoes if you've worn those on the streets/pavement.

The first googles they gave me snapped at the strap when I tried to put it on. The second one had a valve in front of my mouth that seemed to be faulty and let in water with every breath. I wish I just had the old school ones that are just a tube. Went in January and the short sleeve wet suit top was not early enough to keep you warm. Lots of guests were shivering the whole time. The day we went the water was choppy and we got sea sick while in the water. Also getting jostled around by the waves against your closely packed neighbors was def not serene or magical or "experiencing nature" or anything. Not so fun, when combined with tasting sea water with every breath and being cold. Also they don't tell you before you pay but they give you a pool noodle to help you swim to the floating light and to keep your lower body afloat. If you want a life vest it's $10. So in summary, I think it can be nice if the conditions are right and their equipment works. People told me this is an amazing experience but let's be real and beware these factors that can make it not so enjoyable.

Incredible experience!…read more We almost had our snorkeling reservation cancelled due to lack of people, but luckily we were able to get on the Small Group Snorkel & Dolphin Charter which was a much more intimate experience with fewer people and longer snorkel time. Our guides, Seth and Lacey, were the most welcoming and informative staff we were blessed to get. The weather was perfect, the sea life was super active, and they provided us snacks and refreshments for everyone. We got to see some beautiful landscapes, incredible sea life, all while enjoying the beautiful day! When we go back to the big island, we will definitely be booking with Captain Cook for another snorkeling adventure!

The cruise was about an hour each way, and then we spent another hour in the water snorkeling. It was my first time doing so, and I felt very safe and comfortable the whole time! There are tons of colorful tropical fish to observe in the warm, clear waters of Kealakekua Bay. Good choice if you want to try snorkeling!

The guides took the tour out to the Captain Cook Monument, where the snorkeling was cool. The water was clear, the marine life plenty, and it ended up being one of the best snorkeling spots I've experienced. One tip: be sure to rent the flippers when you sign up. They made a huge difference and helped a lot in the water. They are not provided from the all in tour price. For the tour price you get the ride and snorkel mask with a floaty. They also rent life jackets if you need that. This tour is definitely geared toward people who are comfortable swimming and being on an open-air boat. If you're nervous in the water or can't swim or prefer a more relaxed boat ride, this isn't it. If you're looking for excitement, it's hard to beat. What really made the experience special were the crew members. Our captain and lifeguard were laid-back, friendly, and made everyone feel safe while keeping the atmosphere fun. The highlight for me was racing along the coastline at nearly 50 knots, bouncing across the waves and taking in incredible views of the island. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

So I had to wait about 40 minutes for a return call. The experience wasn't very welcoming and not very 'aloha.' Day of the event, it was confusing that the confirmation I received (when I booked) said 11:00pm, at one point the confirmation said 11:50pm, and then finally it said 10:50pm. So I had to keep on checking the confirmation page, because it kept on changing. Definitely don't show up too early, because you'll be turned away! The actual event was a ton of fun, although I got a bit seasick after about 20 minutes. The mantas are absolutely gorgeous and you'll feel super special when they look you in the eye. The guys on the boat were great and very welcoming. This might be a little TMI, but when I got back to the hotel a tiny dead fish popped out of my bathing suite. Eww.

Kona was experiencing high swells this week, but that was no challenge for Sea Paradise and Captain John. The sail was very comfortable on a double hauled catamaran, the boat even had with a large seating area through the middle that's shaded! Snorkel gear was provided, along with a demonstration on how to use it for beginners. The first snorkel locations had lots of fish (I SAW AN EEL!) As we boated over to the second location, a pod of SPINNER DOLPHINS joined us!! We sprawled out on the splash nets at the front of the boat to get up pretty close the the dolphins who loved playing in the boats wake. At the second location I choose to stay on board and enjoy the drink service. Crew members Kamaile and Myrissa were very friendly and tentative making sure our cup was filled. ** I highly recommend the spicy margaritas ** Lunch was served on the way back to the boat ramp, where a sandwich bar was prepared with a variety of meat and cheese options to choose from, (I combined tuna with turkey and pepper jack cheese with lettuce and cucumbers inside) It was delish. Many people learn from history books about captain cook, on this sail we were enlightened about the significance of Kealakekua Bay from the Native Hawaiian perspective. The Hawaiian culture is just so impressive. I highly recommend joining the sail to gain insight on how special the land and surrounding oceans are to Natives. We have also been a numerous scuba dive boat trips. One of the ladies traveling in our group had never done a snorkel trip on Hawaii's big Island. The crew and boat were excellent. The crew communicated well, let us board on time and gave a good detailed safety briefing. They were very friendly and made the trip a lot of fun. Their catamaran, even though there were 45+ passengers, had plenty of room along with adequate storage. The boat gave a clean image and the lavatory to the joy of the ladies was pristine. We were served a nice fruit salad as we left the dock along with some pastries and muffins. Later, after our second snorkeling stop, we were served a deli style lunch that was excellent. All the sodas and sparkling waters you wanted were included along with a variety of chips and bagged cookies. While we brought our own snorkel gear, The boat was well organized in its distribution of gear and had lots of sizes and choices for either the beginner or experienced snorkeler. The crew was very helpful to the inexperienced and allowed those with obvious experience a little more leeway. They gave a good briefing at each of the two snorkel sites that we went to, and spent the exact amount of time snorkeling that they had indicated. While we saw lots of tropical reef fish of many different types, we weren't blown away by the experience. For a traveler who has not done a lot of snorkeling or never snorkel on the big island before this is certainly a good two exceptionally good operation and location to go snorkeling with.
