Sunny is a good choice if you need a no-frills hairstylist. When my parents spend the summers here, they see her, and now my husband and son go to her. As mentioned in other reviews, she is very good with Asian hair. Since the pandemic, my husband has grown his 'do to the point where he looks like a Korean actor - and Sunny knows how to cut and style it like so! While my son can't sit still by himself on the chair, she is willing to let me sit him on my lap with my phone so she can cut. My son's hair looks great and cleaned up! And best of all, she accepts mobile / contactless payments, making it really easy to transact with her after your cut is finished. I called to make a last minute appointment for my husband and the owner was kind enough to squeeze us in. She told us to come in at 2:45 and she was ready for us right on the dot! She finished on exactly 15 minutes and my husband was very pleased with his haircut! When she was done she use this hair vacuum to get all the pieces of hair! Boo to Sunny for becoming one of those places that requires a minimum charge before taking your credit card. She won't take your card any more if you spend less than $20. This is pretty much all men's cuts. I detest places like this and actively make it a point to avoid them. I know small businesses do it to avoid the fees for small transactions, but in that case don't take any credit cards at all. I'll gladly pay cash if a business only takes cash, but to pick and choose really bugs me. I acknowledge that this is completely irrational, but it's just how I feel. I called at 9AM hoping to get the early morning slot, and yep, got an appointment for 15 minutes later! I'm Asian, and heard Sunny did a good job with Asian hair... so I decided to give it a try! The place might be kind of hard to find depending on which direction you approach the building. Last time I tried going, I ended up at Harris Teeter so I just went to Great Clips instead. Sunny's has a large sign, but it's only on one side of the building... Sunny's super nice and did a great job. At first, after I left and got a good look at my hair, I thought she left it too long; but the next day it looked great, she knew what she was doing. Also I like that she vacuums all the stray hair all over your face and in your hair so you can continue on with your day without hair getting in your clothes. After Great Clips last time, I went to Tutti Frutti, ran into my boss there, had an extended conversation, got home, and realized I had hair all over my face. Sunny's is slightly pricier than other places for men's hair ($18 + tip), but I'll definitely be going back! I didn't try to use my card, just paid in cash. read more

I would not recommend this salon to any women. Let me just put my experience into context. I'm generally pretty happy with a $30 hair cut from China Town. (I'm Asian and have long straight hair.) I have standards about my hair cut and I usually carry a picture of a previous hair cut that I like to show a new hairstylist. And I did this time. I got there. She was surprised that I didn't have my hair already washed. Without putting on a full gown, she asked me to go into the hair washing room. She then took out a tarp like water-proof protector, only enough not to get my back wet. There was water spots on my shirt. Normally I wouldn't care, but I was wearing a nicer shirt for an event and didn't want to get it wet. She did the most minimal hair washing job I have ever had. The only process probably took two minutes. I could already sense that she didn't care. Then she took out a pretty disgusting small towel to attempt to dry my hair. By disgusting, I mean it had stains all over and I didn't even know if it was clean. I showed her the photo of a hair cut that I had back in December. She seemed to understand what I wanted. And then she started using a razor to layer my hair. I asked her not to use it and she was fine with it. My layers didn't turn out decent at all. It looks weird when I put it on my pony tail. After she was done cutting it wet, she asked me to go into another room when I had my hair dried by a machine. I thought she was just going to be gone for 5 mins. Nope, 30 mins later, I complained about the wait. She said I was late so she had to take care of two other clients. Yes, I was 10 minutes late but if you are going to have me wait for 30 mins, you should really tell me in advance. Then she attempted to cut my bangs. She did a horrible job. I told her several times how I liked my bangs and also showed her a picture (btw, her English is excellent so I knew she understood me.) It turned out to be really choppy and I can honestly cut it better than she. She didn't even try to fix my hair. So I left with $30 less, terrible layers and ugly bangs. Very good for fine (and thinning) Caucasian hair as well. I used to get my haircuts for $10 at Christine's in Mountain View and was looking for a replacement in Durham. I usually let my wife give the verdicts for haircuts, and she definitely liked the one I got from Sunny -- it is as good as the best haircuts I got at Christine's. The haircut was $16, which seems quite reasonable; I always felt Christine's is almost too inexpensive. So maybe 4.5 stars since the best hairdresser at Christine's does great haircuts for a little less. PS: Sunny is in the same building as SunTrust. read more

I have gone to Sunny & Crew for about a year now and it's one of my favorite places to get a haircut. I can quickly schedule an appointment ahead of time and know that I'll be in and out within 20 minutes, tops. Since I'm an Asian male, Sunny is one of the few people that knows how to cut my hair. The only other place I'm confident in getting my haircut is a place on Geary in San Francisco. Today, Sunny told me Yelp was doing some funny things with her reviews, such as removing good reviews and pressuring her to "buy" advertising services to remove bad reviews. I'm not sure what's going on but I was shocked to hear that as a result of some recent negative reviews, her revenue decreased 20%. Ironically, when I first looked for hair salons in the area after moving to Durham to start a JD/MBA program at Duke, Sunny's was one of the few places with several reviews and a high rating. This morning, her rating was at 3 1/2 stars; as I write this, it's gone up to 4 stars. But honestly, her salon deserves 5 stars - she gives excellent service at a reasonable price ($18 for a men's haircut, I add a $2 tip for an even $20). If you're someone like me, you need to look no further for consistent quality and efficiency. I hope Sunny figures out what's going on with her Yelp listing, but in the meantime, I hope other customers like me show their support for what really is a great service. She always cuts my hair to my preference and will work for as long as needed on it. I'm not asian like many of her clients, but I have straight hair and she knows how to cut it well. I have NEVER felt more unwelcome and underserved in a haircut establishment as I did at Sunny and Crew. This was my first and last time going here. After reading a few positive reviews, I decided to try this place out. I called to schedule an appointment and Sunny was extremely friendly. When I arrived at her studio, I witnessed the same amiability during her interactions with a Caucasian male client, encouraging him to write a good review and tell all his friends about her. However, as soon as it was my turn in the chair (Asian female) she completely changed her tune. It was as if my presence annoyed her as she suddenly became quite rude, telling me that my grown-out fringe bangs looked "horrible". That was just the beginning of the awful experience. I was a bit surprised to see she only had six unfiltered reviews, because from what I had heard from other Asian Americans and from what I could tell at her place, she is pretty awesome. Okay so I quite often visit SUNNY and CREW to get my hair done weekly, as I get Dominican Blowouts. However, the bathroom there is horrible and down rite nasty. If this is a place of business why won't the manager STEP UP and do something about it. Next, the manager of SUNNY AND CREW does not have good people person skills. I have witnessed on several occasions how she has SHUT the door in the room I sit in when getting my blowout done, and then does have any respect enough to say excuse or NOTHING. I have been going to Sunny for over six years, and I think it could not be better. I have very straight hair that is hard to cut well. Sunny just never makes mistakes! I guess some people are used to this, but I'm not. In every place I have lived, I had trouble finding someone who could cut my hair without it looking weird. I also really like that there is no pressure to keep up a conversation the entire time I am getting my hair cut. Sunny has cut my hair probably almost a hundred times now, and sometimes I just want to sit there quietly! Try that at a typical salon and it is impossible. And I don't want to have my hair washed and styled and dried. Just cut, so this is perfect. She's fast, efficient, and very reasonably priced considering the quality and skill that goes into it. This is the only decent place around for an asian guy to get a hair cut. i took my brother to the place after he complained that other places in the area don't know how to cut thick asian hair. We called two hours before the appointment and she was able to squeeze us in, which was nice. If you're a student, she gives you a "special" price of $15 (not including tip). There is no pre- or after-wash for a cut if you are expecting any. I wish I had found this salon much earlier, as it is now my salon of choice. In the past I had been going to Famous Hair, but they were always cutting my hair as quickly as possible (unless you were lucky to get one of the few good hairdressers). Sunny asked me how I wanted to cut my hair, and gave me her opinion on what would look good and what would not. When I made a choice that was different from her recommendation, she was totally fine with it. What differentiates Sunny from other hairdressers is that she does not rush and pays close attention to detail. The $20 minimum for using credit card and the fact that you have to make an appointment in advance could be a nuisance, but having Sunny cut my hair is worth the trouble. She is awesome. read more

I'm mixed 2-3 stars. She's nice and does a decent job cutting. But it's a tad expensive for a short-hair-guy-cut. I like others am irked by her minimum charge. I know fees are high for small businesses - but I'm accustomed to using my Visa/MC for everything and only expect to pay cash for sub five dollar transactions. Not her $10 then $15 now $20 minimum. She caught up with my irk one time by raising rates higher than him minimum charge! Well, I go there now occasionally just because my wife takes the kids there and I can just pop in as well.
