I have used Spire for 18 years and paid my bills on time. They have provided good service for the…read moremajority of the time with very few issues...until I moved. I did the standard start service at the new house on this date and end service at the old house on this date. I thought every thing was good until a got a letter in the mail saying they noticed gas activity at my new house but no open account. Basically, get it fixed or we are shutting off your gas. I called their customer service and the person told me that letter was sent in error and she had fixed it on their side and no disconnect would happen. Cool, errors happen, there was a control in place on their side that caught it, and its fixed after calling. Then, a week later a Spire truck shows up at my house and I don't think anything of it because I called after I received that letter and they fixed it. They are just checking the meter to get caught up from their last error. Nothing to worry about, right? Wrong. They disconnected our service. No heat, no hot water. We didn't notice until the next day when our house was colder and our thermostat was showing an error. We almost called our hvac people because we had a similar error at the old house. But then we pieced it together that the water wasn't getting cold and the pilot light to the gas fireplace was out. So 2 errors on Spire. We're still waiting for them to reconnect our gas. I definitely won't ignore the next time that someone from Spire comes to our house. Do better, Spire

I've been trying to contact Spire for over a week regarding property damage caused by work done at…read moremy home. The only response I've received is an automated email--not a single phone call, no email from a real person, nothing. There's still asphalt scattered in my lawn, the yard repair is poorly done and uneven, and my driveway is cracked--none of which has been addressed. The complete lack of communication is unacceptable and unprofessional. If you damage someone's property, the least you can do is acknowledge it and respond. At this point, I'm preparing to involve legal counsel just to get a basic response. Update: Made contact with Spire, they were kind but they did their job and attempted to save their company as much money as they could. We came to a reasonable conclusion, but it wasn't without more effort than I felt it should have taken. Had I not been persistent, I truly don't think this would have been resolved like it should be. This was much more difficult for people who didn't ask for a pipeline to be ran through their yard, only to receive mediocre repair work in their yards. The biggest victims here are the ones who didn't push to have their property fixed properly. I am still waiting on a yard contractor to contact me. The concrete damage has been addressed and concluded but I've yet to hear the update on my yard work, what's going to be done, and a time frame.

At 11:30 still nothing, so already highly irritated that a large company can't get better than a 4 hour window on an appt. Call wait was 20 min, so when they finally spoke with me only to find out that I was actually scheduled for an all day appointment. ALL DAY, Meaning they can come whenever they feel like it and I am stranded in a house that doesn't even have a chair to sit on. This is the highly advance and innovative company called Laclede Gas Company. (now that was funny) Is there another business outside of utility company's and government that can pull this pathetic service off in 2015? No! We miss an appointment by 2 min and we are getting an ear full. Why do they not have any competition in the market that will force company's like Laclede Gas Company to actually consider that not everyone can just burn a vacation day waiting around with a smile on their face for them to do business with them?

This is one of the worst companies I have ever exchanged business with, and were it not for the…read moremonopoly maintained by Laclede/Spire I would never allow their services at my residence or any other property. After reviewing the experiences described here by other customers, the familiar pattern is readily apparent: Erroneous billing, errors in the application of payments, miscommunication and a lack of follow up, and an eagerness to shut off gas service with no preamble whatsoever...all of the same nonsense I tolerated with Laclede. Always, there will be a litany if excuses, and the vendor will place the blame onto the customer even when written documentation - including dated mail and email - is demonstrated. You may very well play these games with your helpless victims, Laclede, but I have absolutely no intention of allowing such asinine and improprietous conduct from those WHOM I PAY TO SERVE ME. Did you understand that, Laclede? You exist to serve your customers...not the other way around. After my final round of arguments with Laclede, I contacted the State Attorney General's office and also advised my contractor that I would be preparing to replace my home furnace, water heater, and kitchen oven/range top with new electric models. Because my spouse is a dedicated cook who remains forever in love with gas cooking appliances, she agreed to assume responsibility for managing the gas service and for all interaction with Laclede. I have since learned of no issues...although she likely would not dare to tell me unless a truly serious issue arose, as she is aware my intent to remove gas service was in earnest, despite the costs.

The technician who initially came out to provide the bid, Tristin, was very kind and knowledgeable. He took the time to walk me through the issues with my existing water heater and clearly explained the options. I appreciated that they were able to schedule the installation quickly--within just two days--which was very helpful given the situation. There was a small scheduling hiccup, but it was resolved quickly and professionally. Joe Raney and Julian handled the installation. Joe was exceptional and really stood out in terms of customer service. He carefully walked me through the entire install process and took time to explain water heater care, maintenance tips, and the do's and don'ts moving forward. He was extremely patient and thorough, and I never felt rushed. Julian was also very kind and professional during the installation. Overall, I'm satisfied with the work and very appreciative of the professionalism from everyone I interacted with. The only drawback for me was the pricing. Because I needed the work done quickly (only available for the following 3 business days), I went ahead and signed the bid which was a little over $3600 for a standard 40 gal gas water heater, expansion tank, repiping of cold/hot lines, permit, install, and disposal. Afterward, when I had time to look into other quotes, I found that other reputable contractors were coming in much lower via phone - one almost half. The $400 fee to pull what is essentially a $50 permit felt particularly high, especially since competitors I spoke with charge closer to $150-$250 for that service. I was also interested in potentially enrolling in the maintenance program for HVAC and the water heater, but I'm hesitant because if an issue is found during maintenance, the repair pricing will not be competitive. That said, the technicians themselves--especially Joe--provided excellent service, and I truly appreciated their professionalism, patience, and willingness to educate me during the process. The technicians don't determine pricing so this in is no way a reflection of their service.
