It was a bit of a day trip, so we decided to see if there was anything interesting we could do in the area. This being October, there were a lot of things that were closed for the season, but when I saw the Len and Libby's candies brochure that advertised a life-size chocolate moose, we decided we had to go there. They were not kidding, there is a life-sized moose made completely of milk chocolate, and also a life-sized mama bear with two cubs made out of dark chocolate. That alone was worth the trip, but the chocolates were delicious, and they also had a blueberry jam that my husband especially liked. The staff were efficient and friendly, and the store was clean and well lit. The novelty of the chocolate moose was, alone, worth a visit.

Such was the case with Wilbur's of Maine Chocolates. Don't remember now where I read about this place, but some blogger mentioned them with high praise, so on my list this place went. We made a point to stop by Wilbur's on our way to Boothbay Harbor (also in Maine for those who don't know), and we are so glad we did. This is primarily a candy shop... but it is so much more. They have other food items, home decor, gift items, and of course, lots of chocolate. We bought a couple of stuffed animals for our grandchildren, as well as some flavored sauces in a jar (to be poured over ice cream), and we couldn't leave without buying some chocolates ! We tried some chocolate-dipped orange rind and a few truffle flavors as well. Everything was very fresh and tasty. First off- pro tip- Always get their signature Scotch Kisses! Get more than one and thank me later. Scotch Kisses are their homemade caramel wrapped around a soft marshmallow. Holy moly. The best!! I bought one and will now dream of this candy confection for months to come. I need to check if they ship these! Wilbur's wide variety of candy is housed on their second floor. Head upstairs. They had just started decorating for Halloween and you could not pick a better spot to find in the month of October. Candy + Halloween = Perfection. I stocked up on some Halloween themed candy and even found some Pumpkin Pie Jelly Bellies there! Woah, First time trying them and yum. I found my classic rock candy there too. I am more of a sugar candy fan than chocolate guy, so the upstairs was like a dream come true. I even found a pack of Fruit Stripes gum! Classic.
