I was a client of Sun for over 2 years. I went every 4 - 5 weeks to have my hair colored. At first I was pleased with the job she did. However, she immediately started to invite me to her church. This continued even after I told her I was already affiliated with a church. Her behavior continued and culminated in her literally laying hands on me to "pray for me". She did this when I was reclined and she was washing my hair making it difficult for me to physically stop her. I told her to stop as I didn't share her beliefs. Things started to get worse from this point. She even had her husband come into the salon to tell me I should appreciate that his wife was even doing my hair. This was not the only examples of her unprofessional behavior. I noticed she never let me watch her in the mirror and that a friend recently commented on how my hair was damaged in the back. She was always trying to give me medical advice on the use of vitamin supplements. She would ask me very personal financial questions and then started commenting on political issues. I finally told her I didn't share her opinions and asked her to not discuss politics. Then the final straw was when she asked me if my values caused problems with my children and grandchildren! I was actually shocked that she would ask such a judgemental question!! The implication was clear - I must have no values or morals since I didn't agree with her religion and political views. And mind you I never talked about religion or politics. A beautician should not give out medical advice on the use of vitamin supplements and should NEVER lay their hands on you and start praying for you. This is NEVER ok. read more

Sun is the best hairdresser I have ever had, and that says something, as I am 71 years old!! I am confident that I will receive artistic styling and a precision cut as well as personal attention each time I visit Sun's salon. Having lived on the east coast for most of my life, I was used to waiting for my stylist to finish with other clients, despite having an appointment, and, often the stylist was working with one or two other clients in a very busy salon where numbers outweighed individual attention. i went to Sun's salon in June 2020 after my salon was still doing excessive Covid restrictions, IMO. I have worn a curly bob with my wavy gray hair for years because it suits my curly/wavy hair texture and face shape, , and I showed her a photo of the way it looks when properly cut and styled. I told Sun that I had just shampooed at home, but she insisted that she must wash it again. Because of Covid? I don't know, but I use a specific brand of cleansing conditioner, and I did not care for the shampoo Sun used. Sun cut my hair very short, especially in back; when she started blow drying the back with a round brush, I told her that I scrunch my hair and let it air dry or diffuse it; she said I can do that at home, as she kept using the round brush, and snipping more hair every few minutes. I'm sure Sun is a skilled hair cutter. However, she cannot tell how my curl pattern falls if she straightens it with a round brush and heat. I noticed that all of her clients have straight hair styles, and perhaps Sun is more comfortable with straight hair cuts. In any case, I found a stylist in Bandon who understands curly/wavy hair, and does my cuts well so as to use my natural curl pattern, rather than straighten it with a round brush, which does not work living near the ocean. read more

For the first time in many years, I got what I really wanted. I called Sun after a previous hair dresser sent me home with wet hair swirled up on top of my head after double booking. After drying my hair, I had approximately 5 inches of gray and brown hair on top and a mix of blonde and brown hair on the bottoms 20 inches. It looked absolutely ridiculous and I'm not sure how anyone could think that was an acceptable appearance. Sun took the time to listen to my concerns of finding a combination of colors, browns and grays, in a weave that worked well for my hair. At 63 and I'm dealing with a lot more gray. I no longer wanted the blonde weaves I had been having problems maintaining. She was able to find the perfect combination, allowing grow out that won't leave a streak down my part and looks much better and more natural. Let me start with Sun is a very nice woman. I'm very particular with my hair - I like a blended, effortless flowy style. That's it. I've been in twice to see Sun and will never return. The first time Sun cut my hair, I asked for a trim and that's exactly what I got. Thank you! The second and last time Sun cut my hair, I asked for a LITTLE more layering. What I got was a complete disaster. I thought I made it very clear both times I saw her that I like a blended, flowing, natural style. I told her I don't curl my hair; I rarely straighten and I seldom blow dry. And for the past 20+ years, I've had stylists that can cut my hair so beautifully that I don't need to do anything but wash and go. I don't have access to them anymore (I moved). Sun was so proud of the unblended blunt-cut layers she created. She got creative without consultation. She did to my hair exactly what I dislike. I contacted Sun for a blowout and she exceeded my expectations. I was visiting the Coos Bay Area from the Bay Area, CA and have received many, many salon treatments by many different stylists but none were as attentive as Sun. I could tell she respects her profession and clients because she gave me such a great, personal experience. Although I only received a basic blow out, she taught me how to maintain my hair and gave me recommendations for treatments when I visit my regular stylist back home. In Coos Bay for a week on business (from Portland) and desperately needed a cut and color. Based on Sun's reviews here on Yelp, I took a leap of faith and booked with her. And now I can say, with all seriousness I might just make it a trip every six weeks. Yup that's right; drive 4 hours from PDX where there are hundreds of hair salons to Coos Bay, just to have my hair colored by Sun. She's THAT good. I am naturally a 'dirty blonde" and I have brightened it up for years. Because I am very fair, I've wanted a bright light blonde that was neutral the way a towhead kid looks. Anyone who has dyed their hair blonde can attest that this is incredibly hard to get; either its too yellow or too cool/purple. I have sported the gamut of shades on my hair, and Sun is the first person to get it perfect in many, many years. I love this color! Looks like I spent the whole summer in the sun. If she can get blonde exactly right, I think she can manage any color. Also, she is incredibly knowledgable about dealing with problem hair, such as dryness, frizz, breakage etc., even hair loss!
