A heartbreaking experience made worse by a lack of compassion and professionalism. I want to share my experience at Sunset Animal Hospital in Sunrise, FL with Dr. Mayra Sanchez and one of her technicians in hopes that no other pet owner has to go through what we did. We brought in our 12-year-old cat for euthanasia due to kidney failure, already in a fragile emotional state. Instead of compassion, we were met with a surprising lack of empathy and a tone that was UNACCEPTABLE. The unprofessionalism began with one of their technicians and only escalated when Dr. Sanchez entered the room. I even asked whether their staff receives any training in bedside manner, because it was painfully clear that they do not and also asked for the technician to not be let into the room anymore. When we asked about a partial refund for unused medication (something we've experienced at other clinics) Dr. Sanchez responded condescendingly. I asked why she was speaking to us in such a cold, unkind tone, and she replied, "I don't have an attitude. If you don't like my attitude, you can leave." We were shocked. I even told her, "I'm Latina, I know the difference between a regular tone and the one you're using," and hers was far from comforting. I was not going to allow it. I understand if they couldn't honor the refund request, but it's how they handled it that made everything worse. Tone and character go a long way when you're communicating with someone who's grieving. We were there to say goodbye to our beloved cat, not to be dismissed, blamed, or spoken to in a raised voice. While she accused us of being "riled up," she herself was visibly shaking, pointing to paperwork while escalating the situation. We believe SHE should've been the one to step out. Thankfully, another staff member eventually stepped in--kind, gentle, and human. She gave us the care we should have received from the beginning. If your pet is at the end of their life and you're looking for dignity, compassion, and a better experience in the area, I highly recommend Leader Animal Hospital instead. They showed us the empathy this clinic lacked. read more

Our Golden Retriever had a laparoscopic spay at Sunset Animal Hospital with Dr. Polit and her amazing team. It is only day two of recovery and our dog is pretty back to normal. We appreciate very much that Sunset Animal Hospital provides laparoscopic procedures. This spay was much less intrusive than a traditional spay with less pain to our dog. The pre surgery consultations and post surgery follow up is outstaning. We could not be more thankful! Dr. Polit and her team have cared for many of our dogs over the years. My dog was VERY sick, losing weight, listless and about to die. I went to another vet who wanted to charge me for every test under the sun. Ironically I live right around the corner from this hospital when I went to visit them. The doctor took one look at him and knew exactly what was wrong with him. She did ONE test to confirm it and since then he has been on a treatment plan that has kept him perfectly healthy. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

When a got my pup Melos, the Sunset Animal Hospital was part of the package. Although it's a little bit out of my way, I found that the staff was so friendly and caring and took great care of my pup. Dr. Sanchez was so warm and and informative and you could tell she took a extra liking to my dog because she has two chihuahuas of her own. And Melos liked her as well. First suggestion is payment; second suggestion is a DNR . The vet/x-ray tech should be terminated. The people administering treatments and/or providing evaluations are poorly trained and seem to have little experience while performing examinations. Their equipment is always misfunctioning or all together not working. The death of our family member was caused by their malpractice and inexperience. If they just payed attention our poor sweet pomeranian Hershey would be dancing with us. The best piece of advise I can tell anyone is take the 30 min drive to Katy. Totally disappointed with my experience at this location. Where do I begin... 1) Petland in Pembroke Pines sent me to Sunset Animal Hospital knowing full well that they do not honor the their particular discount set up. They should have sent me to Pou Veterinary Group in Kendall. 2) On the day of our visit the office was PACKED and we where not seen until 1.5 hours after our scheduled appointment time. 3) When we finally got in to see the vet the assistance did not speak English well at all so it was very difficult for me to understand anything that she was saying, but from what I could make out were the numerous fees associated with the visits and options to sign up for different services and "saving" plans. 4) When we finally got to see the Veterinary, my experience mirrored my experience with the assistance, minus the language barrier. The Dr proceeded to tell me about the numerous fees associated with THIS visit and future visits. They spent very little time with my puppy, but spend loads of time discussing finances. My overall experience was not good, to say the least. While I completely understand the financial aspects of health care, for humans and our beloved pets, I was totally put off by the staff in this office. I am a seasoned health care administrator so the financial piece to this puzzle is not lost on me, BUT my impression is that the staff was more concerned with pushing their financial agenda then tending to my sweet baby girl. I am a brand new puppy owner, my baby girl is the first dog that I have ever had the pleasure of raising and it is my belief that the staff took advantage of this fact. I think they thrive off of people who do not yet have the knowledge of the care needed for certain animals, namely puppies, so they just push all types of medical stuff at you to intimidate and scare you into buying whatever service or medication they push on you. When we left there my puppy was diagnosed with a cold and prescribed 2 different medications and I was told that I would need to bring her back in 2 weeks for a recheck. The length of time that we waited to see the Dr compared to the time they actually spent with my baby girl was laughable. The Dr also prescribed some heart worm medication but, did not take adequate time to explain to me how to correctly apply the medication so I have no intention of giving it to my puppy until I have better knowledge of how to do it, as I do not want to do in correctly. I was completely overwhelmed when I left that office. Maybe this office works well with it's repeat customers, but if you are a new customer and DEFINITELY if you are new to the world of pets in general, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT BRING YOUR BELOVED ANIMAL TO THIS OFFICE. It's sad to say, but this experience has totally shaken my faith in Veterinary offices. I will start the process of finding a new vet today! read more

I understand that COVID has challenged businesses but that doesn't excuse in unprofessionalism. The folks here are nice, which is what makes this review so difficult. They do not adhere to appointment times. The first time I had an appointment for booster shots at 1. Explaining to the person when I brought my pup that I needed to be in Miami to pick up my kids at 2:30, she told me that it takes 40 minutes. I didn't get my dog back until almost 6 pm (closing time)! I begrudgingly returned thinking that the first appointment was a fluke, and trying to keep my pup with the same vet, I scheduled the last set of boosters. Again, appointment at 2:30. I arrived early to prevent any issues at 2pm. They told me he was ready at 4 pm (again after quoting a 40 minute appointment). I waited until about 5:15 for them to bring him to my car. There was no communication. When you aren't going to meet your estimated time by HOURS, you should communicate with the customer! It was extremely difficult to get someone on the phone. Tried about 5 times and met a busy signal. Who doesn't have call waiting or forwarding to a voicemail?!? They hide fees. I've spent far more than expected at both visits. I don't feel like they are presenting things to me because they care about my puppy. If that were the case, they wouldn't position my next visit as a booster shot and then at the appointment tell me that he is due for 4 other things today! You know the puppy's schedule at the first visit to be transparent about costs at the next visit. Hard to trust a company that will bait and switch. The staff is very friendly but can't say that's worth all that you suffer using this hospital the way it is currently run. I hope they improve but I don't know if I will be a benefactor if they do. read more

Hello Alfonso, I had to block your clinic's phone number because Dr. Polit was not happy with the honest review that I had posted. She called me afterwards to argue with me, telling me that she would not have given me 15% off my next visit if she had known that I would leave such a poor review. I explained to her that no where on the invoice does it state that customers will only receive a discount IF they leave a five star review. I was very honest about my overall experience with Sunset Animal Hospital. I stand by everything I said in my last review. Furthermore, I'm not the only customer that has left you guys a bad review; there are more that a far worse. As the business owner, you should take into consideration ALL of the reviews that people take time out to post and not act on them in a negative way as Dr. Polit did. There's always room for opportunities but one of your doctors calling me to argue was rude, unprofessional and totally uncalled for. I will not be back to your clinic and I hope you take into consideration everything that I stated in my 1st review because it will only help your business in the long run. Your place should always smell clean and not have a pungent odor when you 1st walk in. The receptionist should great you with a smile instead of a nasty attitude and you should not have to wait 15-20 minutes to be seen when you've made an scheduled appointment.
