I'm going to be writing a fantastic and lengthy review for this company but first, let me tell you who I am. I am a very anal perfectionist. I can drive my wife crazy with it. I have owned numerous homes, and I have personally remodeled all of them. I know how to do wood working, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, you name it. I have used numerous contractors over my lifetime for concrete and some interior framing, and I know all about the good ones and the bad ones. You won't go wrong by hiring these guys. I can honestly say that Greg, the owner of the company, is the best contractor I have ever hired. I'll get into how beautiful the work was but first I want to say a few things about how Greg runs his projects. First and foremost, you can expect to see him there every single day. That's huge in a number of ways; number one, you get immediate answers to your questions from the man himself. Number two, he's always there to make certain his workers are doing the job correctly (BTW, most owners aren't there much). Not that it was needed though, because his workers are absolutely talented, skilled, hardworking, kind, and very helpful. They know what they're doing and honestly don't require any supervision. But still, it's very nice to have the owner there every single day. How is it that Greg has the time to be there every day? Well, I asked that very question and that was when I found out that Greg only takes on one project at a time. That's huge. It means his workers and Greg himself are there every day and your project isn't delayed because one of the other projects is taking more time than anticipated. It means that things move along quickly. Though they're not actually family, they are family. They eat lunch together almost every day and Greg has had the same workers for the past twenty years because he treats them right. It shows. Let me say the most important thing about the work that Greg does. He does it the right way. He does not cut corners. I watched every step of our project and was absolutely thrilled with the meticulous way that they do things right, to include compacting DG (decomposed granite) in a lot of the areas they were going to pour cement. Almost all the previous cement projects I've had done, did not do that. They simply poured over bare dirt, sometimes without even compacting it. I did not ask Greg to do this, that is just how he does it. He does it right. Every step of the project, to grading properly and accounting for good drainage, and building retaining walls that will stand the test of time, Greg's way of doing things is the right way. I couldn't be happier with the work that I witnessed. Greg was very willing to hear my ideas and, in most cases, we implemented them. If we didn't it was because he gave me very good advice on why to not do it the way I was thinking. His workers were always watching and listening and more than willing to make things the way you want them. I can't say enough about the workers. We put in retaining walls and tore out our old pool deck and patio. I wanted the cement around the pool to have a border design around it. What they came up with was a 12" border that was Broom finished (faint, small straight lines), with the rest of the cement done with a Sweat finish (small half circle patterns). I mentioned that I was wanting the interior control joints (cement control joints, are intentional, planned gaps cut or placed into concrete to guide cracking along a straight line rather than randomly) to be run at a 45 and not horizontal and vertical. Our pool is curvy and not rectangular or square. Greg talked me out of the 45's due to this fact but then his workers, on their own, came up with a much better solution. They made the control joints wavy and curvy as well. They brought me out to make certain I liked it (they would have changed them if I didn't) I ABSOLUTELY loved what they came up with, and mind you, it was without my prompting. What they did was artistry at its finest. It turned the control joints into a visual feature and not just a functional thing. The retaining wall is absolutely gorgeous. All of the cement is absolutely gorgeous. The workers go above and beyond what is expected. I found Greg to be very easy to work with. I found his pricing to be very fair, especially considering the fact that they go above and beyond what most cement contractors do. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend them to you. read more

I recently received a quote from Greg at Sunset for a decent sized (2,300 sqft) concrete project. After reviewing the estimate I asked him how much it would cost to add in some expansion joints. He then questioned me on why I think I need expansion joints. I responded nicely told him why I felt like it was important. Granted I am a Civil Engineer, so I know a little bit about concrete. This was then his response: "Thank you for your Google information. I am well aware of what expansion joints are for and know that they are totally unnecessary in our California climate. You should research what part of the country your information is coming from to know that you don't need them. Secondly, we are not pouring concrete during the heat of summer unless you're procrastinating your project until then. This is an excellent time to pour concrete and give it plenty of time to cure." Everyone should be aware of this customer service. In addition to this lovely email exchange he felt the need to smoke a cigarette while he was at my house discussing and measuring for the estimate. read more

I found Greg to be rude and condescending. I was having a conversation with him over text about an island/grill I want to build on my home. Everything was fine until I asked a question about his drawing. I initially told him I wanted an L-shaped island but he insisted it couldn't be done. His reasoning was that the grill would not fit. If he really thought it couldn't be done, that's fine. But I was confused with his drawing because it shows an L-shaped design (see picture). I'm still not really sure what he meant by the grill wouldn't fit. If the design in his drawing was not big enough, he never suggested going bigger. When I asked if we could go with the design on his drawing (which is in an L shape), apparently that really bothered him for some reason. I attached a picture of his response. To be honest, his response really threw me off. I was being nothing but polite and respectful. Keep in mind that all of this conversation happened between Greg and I. My husband wasn't involved so I was confused by his request to speak with him instead. And his comment about my husband "putting me through this" was ridiculous and funny at the same time. read more

Called Sunset Construction, Greg answered the phone and he was pretty pleasant, at first. I needed a quote for a block wall fence. As he asked about the footage, I clarified with my husband whom was sitting next to me what the exact numbers were. I gave him the footage and then he asked other specific questions ( split face or smooth) told him split face. Then I tried explaining to him the look I wanted and what the neighbors wanted because we will share the wall. Granted, I'm not familiar with all the block wall terms so he said, "why isn't your husband talking to me? Women shouldn't be calling for these types of things." Ladies, if you want to start a project in your home and your husband isn't the one calling, don't even bother with this man. Very belittling. read more

I had a very large backyard living area drawn up professionally and when it came time to call over who I felt were qualified contractors that specialized in big backyard living spaces I was striking out. I had several outdoor contractors come. Some priced it so high I'd swear they were just trying to get rid of me. Others wouldn't even bother getting back with a quote. Others lead me on to believe they were going to do it just to back out last minute. Much of my time was wasted. I understand to an extent because what I wanted wasn't going to be easy. It was going to take a lot of work and dedication to get it done properly, which is not the usual small job and move onto the next situation. I contacted Greg with Sunset Construction and encouraged him he could do the job and have my full cooperation to work with him if issues with my plan arise. Greg didn't try taking advantage of me. Affordable backyard construction was something I thought would be impossible but he quoted me better than fair. Greg was in the back yard nearly every day he sent workers. He literally wasted no time and was blunt with his communications and actions, while still being a total friend. He also put up with my last minute changes. It was about 4-5 days of cement work alone. The outdoor cement stairs turned out beautiful. 5-6 days of masonry work for the seat walls / planter boxes and amazing outdoor bbq kitchen or outdoor bbq island (whatever they are called). The pergolas and patio cover turned out great. Really the pictures speak for themselves. Just look at my backyard. Greg is the first contractor I've ever hired that I didn't need to watch to make sure things were getting done properly. He turned my vision into a reality. Happy happy happy!!! That's all I can say! Completely recommend!!! From the first time we called Greg, he lightened up our day just by answering, for one. Second, he thanked us for calling him. Third, it made us so happy to hear him say he would come out the very next day to take a look at the project site and take measurements. He did his thing and was detailed on measurements, we spoke for a bit and he did his calculations. We couldn't wait to get started with him right away, we didn't even let him walk off to think about making a decision or have to even talk about it. My husband and I both knew we wanted him, so before he walked away I stopped him and asked when can we start. I was amazed at how he explained all details. He started one week later and We got our patio and sides of our house all finished in just two days. I am extremely ecstatic at how this whole process went from start to finish. Him and his team poured all our concrete (patio, walkway around the house, extended driveway, and porch stairs), along with a patio cover including a skylight, two fans and lights, as well as a gas fireplace. They were always professional and communicated the process from start to finish. Whenever I had questions Greg responded right away. When the city came to inspect the job for the permit they loved the work and want to use Sunset Construction for themselves. It is great quality work that will last the life of my home and provides me a place to entertain, relax and best part its low maintenance. We recently worked with Greg to add on to our existing patio and construct our built in BBQ island and bar top. We've worked with multiple companies in the past to complete various projects in our backyard, and this experience was by far the smoothest. Greg kept us in the loop with communication regarding the products ordered, always responded to our questions, and delivered the end result we wanted. Some previous companies we worked with did a poor job, so when Sunset expanded on an existing patio cover, it made more work and trouble; however Greg's team found a solution and made it better than our original construction. The worst customer acquisition skills and he will even talk down to you as well. His ability to treat some decent over the phone was piss poor at best. With constant corrections on verbiage, and extreme attitude. Then he didn't bother to listen to what I needed or wanted, then tried to up the size of the base building, before he even realized the stone work or money it really would of costed to get me what I needed. So Greg may of been good at this one time or another. But I'd be wary of doing business with such a person. He not only demeaned me as a person, he then tried to bilk me for a larger structure: "I can't pull my guys off another project to make a litte building." I Responded, 12 x 16 larger if it will fit, told him I still need to get over to the new property, to really scope it out! I then made it clear I was looking for a higher fit and finish : Stone and wood, like his website showed, yet he was more interested on correcting the name I was calling it "Gazebo" Okay cover patio then, the fact of the matter is if he starts with this kind of condescension, how does it progress, and what little care would such a person have for you after your project is finished, my guess is even less than I was shown during the first phone call. He responded with more condescension, than most would endure. He failed to take the time to listen to the fact I wanted a nice stone and wood structure, like his main picture shows. Instead he carelessly said: I do 25k - 100k projects, (my thought exactly that was in fact my budget for this 'Cover Patio') He failed to even mention his minimum size project anywhere on his site, nor is that minimum reflected half the picture he displays, for what he can do for you. So basically if you don't have a 25k project this guy doesn't need your business. He didn't even need my business, at it was in fact in the criteria he is looking for, a way to scam you for his main money makers. Meanwhile half of his construction picture are off the exact size I needed made. So what is it? The end conclusion I was left with: go with the dozens of real construction companies that are capable of having crews for all sorts of projects, no matter how small or large your project is, someone else will take care of you much better. Nor did he bother to listen to me, he judged me and then disregarded every single word I said after that. Kept trying to push a patio extension when I said very clearly at the start of the conversation I need a Gazebo" you mean a free standing structure, condescension, condescension." He was more perturb and perplexed by by the name I was calling it, then the job at hand, when is pleasing people and making money. Fresno and the central valley is filled with quality builders, pick another one, this one seems to be nothing but problems. You replied with exact lack of understanding and care that you took that phone call. " I did not know how else I could explain to you that during this busy time of year I cannot justify taking my crews off much bigger projects for yours." Well for starters you could of started with that: during this busy time of year, I am swamped, so it will be a decent wait for anything we can build for you. But I would be happy to spend a few minutes with you, listening and then and only then tell me what you could do for me. "I never tried to upsell you, that is a fabrication from someone who clearly did not get his way." You tried to downsell me which you would of known if you listened. What I wanted, did not have a demand on construction or timing, So sir you are lying right there, to cover up your poor communication skills. More focused on the terminology used, instead of producing a project. That was at not time suppose to take precedence over other people projects. But it is interesting to note: if my project was big enough, you would of put other people's work on hold. I wanted a quote, I never once said anything about putting others people project behind mine. That is all you trying to avoid taking ownership. This only proves that you must of had many judgments, other then a complete lack of understanding, or exhibition of listen skills. "You are a very difficult person to talk to, obviously of the entitlement generation." Proof case in point, I had not mentioned anything other then I am buying a house, and was looking for a "Free standing structure" Wouldn't want to launch you in to a rant about gazebos. " I did my best to extract information about the type of structure you wanted but you clearly had no understanding of construction" You did more to correct terminology several times, that is beyond aggravating. You knew exactly what I wanted, and tried to ask me about a patio extension, and which wall I wanted the extension to come from. I called for a free estimate for concrete and a building. From the first phone call back we got nothing but negative comments from Greg(the owner). He tried to talk us out of everything we said we wanted. 2nd call was more negative comments telling us we don't know what we are talking about then refused to come give us a quote. Then after he hung up on us he text my wife with a rude and unprofessional message. We highly suggest not using this company because of their customer service. At our first meeting we reviewed all of our wants & needs with Greg and he transformed our ideas to an absolutely beautiful custom backyard living space. I did not actually have anything done by this company, however, glen was really nice and spent several minutes on the phone with me. He was very thorough in explaining to me what I was asking for. Instead of price gauging me (which wouldn't be that hard as I know nothing about concrete) he gave me several options to save me money but still accomplish what I wanted. Very impressed with the quality of our covered patio and cement work that Greg at Sunset Construction provided us. I originally submitted quotes through Yelp looking for a qualified contractor to install an attached covered patio and Greg with Sunset Construction stood out. Not only was did the company have great reviews he was the first person to get back to me with information out of all the requests I sent and he was on vacation! Greg set up an appointment to provide me an estimate and his prices we great! I inquired when he came out to perform the quote if his crew does cement and next thing I knew I had a one stop shop for the covered patio I needed and the side cement work I have been procrastinating on. I received a few more quotes but Sunset Construction outshined the rest. Called Greg the next week and told him lets move forward. Greg took care of the patio permit process for us with the City of Clovis and while we were waiting for the permit and patio supplies to go through Greg and his team poured our cement that we wanted so we could have it early and then about 10 days after the permit was approved Greg and his team came out to install the patio. They had it done in 6 hours and couldn't be happier with the final result. The patio we chose included 2 lights and a ceiling fan and Greg made sure the electrical was done to code and look seamless.
