Just discovered this store not too long ago and I really like it. I'm a fan of smaller grocery stores in general. Keeps me from getting too overstimulated..lol. I come here quiet frequently and have to say it's one of the top grocery stores in the north shore. The staff never fails to impress me because they are all so friendly and constantly go out of their way to help. The manager is always very accommodating when you have a request. As far as the food selection, I really like how they carry items from local bakeries. I always load up on Carol's Cookies. The prepared food is always stellar and they always have something new. I've been buying their Parmesan crusted tilapia for years and it's delicious-highly recommend. The seafood/ meat is always fresh and I only trust this place to buy lobster from. Also, they carry the freshest salmon out of any place I know. The fruit and vegetable section is very big and never once did I encounter any bad looking produce. Clearly, they inspect their items very well. In this section they also have a salad bar and, again, it's the best around. I highly recommend getting the guac they offer! I experienced very poor service in the meat department. I brought my brisket to be sliced after cooking , as I have done many times before, to the meat department. I stood around for 15 minutes before I could find an employee to help me. During that time the brisket was not the approved temperature . The store manager patronizingly apologized and said they were short staffed. This is not my problem. I was the only customer requesting service at the time. This is my favorite grocery store of all time. I wrote a review for Sunset Northbrook a while back, but here are some of my favorites at this store: Lemon Parmesan Tilapia- You can find it in the deli depending on the day. It is one of the best fish dishes and the best Tilapia sunset carries. Perfect balance between the tartness of lemon, the savory parmesan, and the richness of the Tilapia. Sunset Panini- They will cook the sandwiches in the case for you at the store. I like this particular one because of the lemon dressing (can you tell I like lemon?). They add deliciously authentic and crunchy HOMEMADE chips and a pickle. Sun Dried Tomato, Basil, and Fetta Fettucini- My favorite cold noodle dish. This is good if you are looking for bright, light-tasting, pasta salad that can be eaten as a side or main dish. Other reasons besides food I love this place: If you are nice to the butcher, he will give you beef bones for free. If you have a dog, this is one the healthiest, best "treats" to give them. The marrow is a good addition to any dog diet and the dogs just love them! (Note: Never give a dog cooked bone because it can shard and hurt their innards. Only raw and uncooked bone for your doogies please!) Ginny at this store is the nicest person ever. My family was out the Wednesday before thanksgiving trying to pick up just a couple last minute items. We pulled into the Sunset parking lot at 9:02, when it closed at 9:00 p.m. I got out of the car to see when it would open on Thanksgiving day, and was met by Ginny who welcomed me into the store to pick out my last minute items. It's always that places are closing early instead of staying open just for you! Ginny was a Thanksgiving miracle and just added to my already high opinion of Sunset! read more

I have eaten lots of lobsters in my life. This was undeniably the freshest ever. This lobster fought me when I took him out of the box! I've NEVER had that happen before! Usually they're lethargic. Sunset Foods is not an attractive looking grocery store but, what it lacks in store personality is made up in the amazing higher end products and true quality customer service. I have been a shopper of Sunset Foods for a few decades. My 1st experience was at the Lake Forest location. This store remains my favorite out of all the other larger, newer Sunset Foods. It is also the smallest and that is why I enjoy the store. When I visit Sunset, I know I can get my favorite products: Sprecher Root Beer (from Wisconsin), Graeters Ice Cream (from Ohio), Stacy's Pita Chips, Walker Brothers Apple Pancake & Intelligentsia Coffee (Chicago). Recently I was pleasantly surprised to discover they carry frozen baos from Wow Bao (A Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant located in the Chicago Loop). A bao is a type of steamed, filled bun available in various Chinese cuisines. Fillings can be meat or vegetarian. Want a quick lunch? They offer one of the BEST salad bars loaded with fruits, veggies, dressings and so much more... If you have not had a chance to visit a Sunset Foods, I encourage you to experience a family owned and operated grocery store that cares what the customers think. read more

Is there such a thing as being spoiled when grocery shopping? There is if you shop at Sunset in Lake Forest! I specifically mention LF, because although there are other locations and they all offer great service, I find the one in LF to be the best. Even though the HP store is probably closer to me mile for mile, I go to LF. It's not a huge store, but you'll find everything you need there. You can absolutely do all of your shopping at this one store. The meats are of excellent quality; the deli has a great selection of meats a well as "ready to go" stuff (grilled salmon topped with creamy dill sauce, etc.); the bakery has LOTS of goodies (all fresh); and the produce section rivals that of most chain stores. Oh... and the cheese! They have a cheese selection like no other store, except maybe Whole Foods. Like another poster said, if they don't have exactly what you're looking for, ask. They'll gladly get it for you. They carry the every day brands, as well as local products like practically the entire Barefoot Contessa line (everything from cookie mix to hot chocolate to honeycombs!), Hole in the Wall spaghetti sauce, Ditka's hot sauce & Ditka's salsa and Carol's Cookies. They also have a bunch of imported stuff (Bolands cookies from Ireland, Hilden bottled water from England, etc.). Additionally, they have one of the best liquor departments around. Beer selection is kind of small, but they have LOTS of unusual stuff (some beer you can buy by the bottle) and a HUGE HUGE HUGE wine selection. The folks that work there honestly seem to enjoy their jobs (one cashier told me she has never worked for a better employer) and they are very friendly to deal with. I've never waited more than about one minute in a line - literally. They are very good at finding an open register, unloading your groceries, and moving people through the registers. And (talk about getting spoiled) you pull up under a cove rd area, and the guys load the groceries into the cart for you! You don't touch your groceries from the time you pull it from the shelf until he time you get home. It really makes shopping there a treat. I will absolutely never shop anywhere else again! I expected more selection on higher quality or harder to find items. I needed a high quality caster sugar (I would have settled for any) and high quality self rising flour. Both of which show as available online. I ended up with superfine coffee sweetener and Pillsbury. I may as well just stick to the local Wal-Mart where I can get the same products at half the price. read more

Had a bus with elderly people and I dropped them at the handicap ramp as some of them have walkers. A very rude women from sunset came and demanded I move the bus. I am a recent convert to the church of Sunset Foods. I had heard of it before but hadn't stepped foot in one until their newest location in Long Grove opened up a little while back. This location usually is too far for me but since I have been spending mucho time at Lake Forest Hospital, this is a quick shot down 43 and I am right there. Yes, the store is small but what they can pack into this small space blows my mind. I have mostly been getting the prepared foods and salads at this location. It also allows me to sneak my dad some tasty food that is better than hospital food. The broasted chicken is fab. They offer it warm or cold. I had the over baked chicken warm and the broasted cold. Both were great. The hot mac and cheese was to die for as well. Now, on to my nemesis, the bakery. I got my birthday cake from the Sunset in Long Grove last year and it was, by far, one of the best cakes I have ever had. (Chocolate cake, Chocolate mousse filling and raspberry whipped cream) The selection is unheard of. This time around I didn't need something as fancy so I went right for the cupcakes. SO MANY CHOICES. Vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, cookies and cream, pina colada, mint chocolate or Boston cream. Uh, boston cream it is and what a great choice it was. Yellow cake, chocolate icing, and custard in the middle. I was nice enough to share it with my dad. For my final choice, I got a large iced cookie. Those bring me back to my childhood and they are just as good as I remember them. The have a wonderful selection of treats from local bakeries (one of the places that will be selling some items from the now closed Apple Haus of Long Grove) and, what seems to me, is a nice selection of gluten free treats as well. Since I am not a "gluten free person" the only thing I can go on is notice that their gluten free selection is larger than I have seen at other stores. A nice touch is when you come to the check out, there are people waiting to load your items onto the belt. read more

Fantastic grocery store. Love the fresh deli items, and boy am I picky for fresh. I have been going out of my way for years just to get here. The best egg salad ever. All of the items are truly unique and if there is something you are looking for, they will no doubt have it for you! oh sunset foods, how i love thee. sunset has a *great* salad bar selection, so fresh, and so clean. the service is fabulous, but naturally it should be on the north shore. the selection of food isn't huge, but hot damn i hear the meats are a cut above the rest and the bakery is scrumptious. the people watching is prime, the north shore moms are out in full force with juicy sweat suits and louis vuitton purses. plenty of parking in between the escalades and navigators. wootah, gotta love the north shore. read more

Best fish department ever. Always fresh and good. I shop for fresh fish at minimum 1x / week and am always happy with the quality. I tried Mariano's new store in Bannockburn, 1 x for salmon - mistake - right back to Sunset where I'll always shop for their fish. I've been a customer of the Lake Forest store for about 25 years now. Some departments aren't as good as they used to be so I'll limit my comments to the positive. read more

Have shopped at this location since moving here in the late 80s. Seems every since they remodeled the store they are under staffed. Over last Holiday season I used the grocery delivery program, the lady was very knowledgeable while I recovered from hip surgery and that was wonderful. I tried it recently and it was not the same service. Three tries and wrong items in each order. Not sure what is next for Sunset Foods but Jewel in Lake Forest has a similar program. This grocery seems to be improving! Yes! I was in the other day and the staff seemed 'brighter' and the isles were clear of any clutter that I've seen in the past. They may be getting back to the 'old' Sunset that we all enjoyed! Higher price without better service is what I had been seeing over the past couple of years. This store has everything. Went here Friday night with a bestie and what a GOOD time we had! We heard that they had a "bar" at this Sunset location so being barflies, of course we had to try it. It's more of a tasting counter, but it was so pleasant and low-key that we decided to go on a monthly (maybe weekly?) basis. The bartender we had, "Sheila," was awesome. VERY attentive and you could tell she's one of those employees that actually care about the customer and doing their job well --- so rare these days. I hope Sunset keeps her happy. We did a flight of wine each and they had a nice selection ranging from a chianti to a chardonnay. There are about 6 stools and no dance floor, no band, and no horrible acoustics, so Sheila could hear and solve all of our personal problems without straining. I wish the Long Grove location had a counter like this, as it's much closer. Had to subtract a star because it's only open until 8 pm and my bedtime isn't until 9 pm. read more

What a super store....been shopping there it's seems forever. The food selection is excellent for a smaller store, but it has all the variety of the big box stores without walking 5 miles to save 5 cents. Love all the personal attention given along with the quality of fish, deli, and the fruit/veggie department. My highly rated employees are Bill T the store manager, Pete his asst., George in the fish area, Lina in fruits and veggies, Victoria who is a super personal shopper and Lois who loads my car. The weakest link in the store is Tina the deli manager...she is clueless on how to deal with ANY people besides herself. I can't say enough good things about shopping at Sunset. It's all about service there, and while it's prices are higher than places like Walmart, Costco or Jewel, it's all worth it because of the service. Want a particular product they don't carry? No problem, they'll get it for you. Want your groceries loaded in your car for you? No problem, it's part of the service. Want great beef, pork, lamb and chicken selections? They've got it. The sad part for us is that we're moving soon, and will miss both the people and service at Sunset. read more

If you shop the sales, their sales prices are better than either of the big chains' prices. I live a mile from the Lake Bluff Dominicks, and about a mile from the Lake Forest Jewel, and drive happily past either one or the other on my way to Sunset. Other than milk, I don't think the chains can beat Sunset on sale prices. Sunset's meat is exceptionally good, and my family has been so spoiled by the quality that if I try to sneak meat from one of the chain stores onto the table, someone immediately comments that there is something "wrong" with dinner. Their produce stays fresher longer than produce I have picked up at other stores. The service is exceptional. If possible, they may employ too many checkers, as I have never had more than one customer ahead of me in line, even during holiday rushes. They have special ordered products for me, I have ordered groceries for delivery when I was recovering from surgery, and the orders were delivered correctly and promptly. Their selection is deeper than at the chain stores, the store is clean, well lit etc. I noticed a comment about the fancy cars in the parking lot, but I have taken our 14 year old banged up Chevy rust bucket through the pickup line, and have also worn really shabby gardening and painting clothes inside, and have always been treated as nicely and respectfully as the fancy-schmancy folks. read more
