I used to come here several years ago when I worked in the area, back when it was names Dee Jay Foods. I just love a grocery store that serves a hot lunch. I remember when it was a rarity but now nearly every grocery store has some kind of hot lunch/dinner/soup option. This store has the typical salad bar where you make your own. I don't like the roasted chicken there, it's that pre-made sliced probably frozen crap that is also at the much bigger Sunset Foods salad bar but never found at Antons Fruit Ranch where it has the best salad bar anywhere on the North Shore. I also had the baked chicken which was pretty good. They give you a few choices that are mixed and matched with mashed potatoes, pasta, veggies, Italian sausage, sliced roast beef and more. Priced right and filling. They also offer chicken only baked or fried. There are lots of cold salads and dips in the deli and preformed special spiced burgers which I did bring home and grill, and were quite good. For a quick lunch or a take home pre-made hot dinner, or a bottle of wine and some fried/baked chicken to haul into Ravina or your kitchen this is a very good option. read more

Great service from their bakery. I placed an order of jumbo size cupcakes ($4 each) and they can package each cupcake individually which is perfect for zoom parties and drop offs. You can pay over the phone and the pickup is easy. Standard cupcake flavors of vanilla and chocolate with buttercream frosting covered with sprinkles. They probably have other flavors and toppings available. read more

The first time I shopped here I kept looking down to make sure I wasn't trailing toilet paper from my shoe because everyone who walked by gave me a huge smile. It turns out they were smiling cause people are just friendlier when grocery shopping in the burbs. The customers aren't the only friendly ones. The employees always greet you with a big smile and are way more helpful than any other grocery store I've had the pleasure of shopping at. They even take your groceries to your car after, which is especially nice when you're in a hurry to get in your car in the winter. It's a pretty tiny store so for a bigger selection I often go to Sunset Foods in HP, but I've found all the basics and then some here at Grand Foods. I've also noticed that the produce and other groceries can be a bit more expensive there, but I'm learning that's to be expected in Glencoe. read more

What's with the mango that's hard and dry? and cut into spears that you put on your fork and they're like unbalanced atop it and they fall off onto the hardwood floor and get dust on them. I've been coming to Dee Jays and the grand since I was a kid. Most items are very overpriced, especially the premade food, but you're paying for convenience. There are some deals to be had. For years the lunch plate has been a go to lunch for me. For years it was $5, I think it's still less than $8. You get a choice of meat and 2 sides. It's enough for 2 meals. This grocery store is the nicest store to shop for groceries you'll find anywhere on the north shore. All of the workers are helpful and friendly. All of the managers are friendly too and try to get to know your name if you are a regular. They have a new chef doing some interesting and tasty food for the dinner to go meals. Cheeseburger soup - yes it really tastes like a cheeseburger! A few moinths ago they added some Chinese, Cuban and Cajun stuff as well that are much better than the baked chicken, fish and meatloaf (boring!) that the older crowd likes. My family has been shopping at Dee Jay's since I was in high school, and it's everything that you imagine a village grocery store to be: small, personal, a little on the expensive side for some things, but so convenient if you live in the area. We were having a family BBQ this week, and my mom had heard that the butcher was now making flavored turkey burgers, so she got a variety for us to grill. They were absolutely delicious - fresh, meaty, flavorful, moist, and generously portioned! Everyone loved them, even the die-hard red-meat eaters at the table. It's a great reminder that innovative and healthy products are not always the domain of the large chains - great stuff is being made right in our own towns. I love this place, but the produce is always overpriced. They have a nice variety of food, but you pay a premium for the convenience of the store. It's located in the heart of downtown Glencoe and offers everything that you could find at any major grocery store. Is it a little pricey? Yes. Is the selection a little slim? Sure. Look around, this is a tiny neighborhood grocery store! But the shortcomings of the Grand, are more than made up for by great customer service. If you don't find what you need, they will try to order it in for you. They have a few limitations, but normally can accommodate. If you are a regular, they know you by name, and ask how you are doing, how are your kids, etc without ever being too nosy, AND they remember from visit to visit. They have recently added online shopping and local delivery. The offerings are reflective of the community, a good selection of basics with high quality brands and a fair amount of gourmet foods. Deli does have boars head, and a selection of ready to serve dishes for dinner on the go, or a quick side. Best selection for hot food is closer to lunch, although there are heat and eat options in the deli as well for take home. The meat area has the normal offerings and some organic selections, as well as prepared burgers, kebobs, chicken and beef that has been marinated in house. Ample selection of beer, wine, and a few spirits. Small floral selection, and the ability to buy helium filled mylar balloons too. Jewel or Dominics have NOTHING on the bakery. Andreas does an amazing job decorating for birthdays or special occasions. I now trust him to have full creative license, as his stuff is way better than what I can come up with. Give him an idea, and let him run with it. You won't be disappointed. Quality of baked goods is superior. Make sure you check all your expiration dates. Sometimes they fall through the cracks, but as I said earlier, customer service is EXCELLENT, so if you do get something expired, they are always gracious enough to take it back. I love! Grand Foods. The people who run the place and work there are so warm and kind, I get a little pick-me-up every time I walk in the door. Which is how it's supposed to be. They will do absolutely anything for you, from delivering forgotten items to shaving steaks down for Philly cheesesteaks to ordering special items. I also compliment Grand on having items (like the other day I found semolina pasta flour there) that you might not find in stores 3x the size. Grand is one of the most enjoyable aspects of living in Glencoe and I wish them great success forever. The only possible area for improvement would be natural foods. Grand has plenty of natural choices but they could do better, and from what I can gather, most of the stuff they prepare themselves is not all natural. Reading the reviews I knew it would be more expensive than then average grocery store so I was excited to use a Groupon and try The Grand for the first time. Wow, it sure is pricey. They're not kidding when they say $$$$ ultra high-end. I'm used to shopping at Sunset Foods and paying more for service so I'm not comparing them to say Aldi's. Yes, the customer service is good - at least 5 people asked to help me throughout the store. Is this extra service worth 10-25% higher costs? I don't think so. With this market so saturated these days - Heinen's, Mariano's, Sunset Foods -- they need to figure this out quickly. read more

Best skirt steak you'll ever find (have them tenderize it for you). Neighborhood gem. They offered free delivery for a month after having a new baby (at least back when I was having babies). They have offered first jobs for many local kids and are very philanthropic about giving back to the community. Well run and adeptly chosen products for a small store. A breath of fresh air in an era of massively sized stores and invisible (on-line) stores; they're just the right size. read more
