I bought my house about two years ago and never got the previous owner to show me how to use my sprinkler system but I knew I had one. After a little too much time, spent hand watering I decided that it was time to just buck up and get a professional to come help. I had called Johnny initially, and he did tell me that his rate was $150 hourly. I wasn't sure if that was high, but it seemed kind of high so I didn't call back right away. However, I had a conversation with my neighbor across the street who gave me the number of someone who would come and worked on her system and said that he was really great. Ironically it was Sunset. So I figured that might as well pay a little more than I wanted to know that whoever came was good at what they do. Referrals are everything. I called Johnny and he was able to get me in rather quickly. He actually ended up coming a day earlier than we had planned because he had some extra time and it worked for me. He was able to figure out my system really quickly and spent the time to show me how to program it and make sure it's working. He also told me to call back in the winter that he could chop down a pesky tree that I would love to remove from my front yard. Overall, he was very personable, and definitely seem to know what he was doing. While his prices were exactly what I had budgeted for I would so much rather pay a professional who knows what they're doing then go cheap and end up with bigger problems than I started with. I had two years to figure out the system and never could but he was able to in five minutes. I am so looking forward to not having to worry about hand watering in the mornings anymore. I'm also very lucky that the system I had was actually working and there were no additional issues to deal with. read more

Johnny and Sunset Sprinkers had been recommended by a friend. We had just bought a house that didn't have a functioning sprinkler system. Johnny came out and reviewed with me what I wanted to do, and what areas I wanted to have sprinkler coverage for. He also made recommendations for putting drips around several trees we had in our yard. He gave me a reasonable estimate, came when he said he would be there, and did an excellent job installing the system. All around very professional. Knowledgeable, efficient, and kind--that's how I would describe Johnny. He called me ahead of our scheduled time to give me a heads-up that his previous job had run long, and he'd be a little late. Then called again when he was 10 minutes away. Once he arrived, I asked that we communicate via phone while my immune-compromised husband and I remained inside. Johnny was 100% respectful of that need. We had one station that didn't have enough pressure. Just by the sound, he recognized immediately that the problem was with the valve. He rebuilt it in about 20 minutes, then replaced a couple of sprinkler heads. He emailed me the invoice. The price was quite reasonable. I paid online. So convenient! I called to get help with my irrigation and swamp cooler lines which are poorly set up and leaking. 1st he picked up the phone which pretty much all other companies I have called today I went straight to voice mail or I was directed to their website. I had a slow leak in one of the plastic pipes about 3 feet underground that created a small swamp at the surface. It turned out that it was the lowest of 4 pipes that were running together in parallel making it a nightmare to access and repair. We purchased our home in Albuquerque last year and this is our first spring in out new (30 year old) home. Our sprinkler system was mislabeled and set up very confusingly by zone and some zones were no longer active. After scouring the NextDoor app, I found many recommendations for Sunset Sprinklers. I called and left a voicemail, then went in the website and was able to easily make an online appointment. Johnny Carter, the owner/operator called me back the same day and had already seen my online appointment, but just wanted to follow up. I received a text message reminder the day before my appt and he also called the day of when he was on his way. Johnny was punctual, professional, and SO informative and helpful. He was able to consolidate and reset all zones, ensured all emitters were working and properly flowing as needed for every single piece of vegetation. He educated us on the plants we have and what type of watering schedule we needed, and set up my timer for me. Then, he and my husband worked together to move a VERY heavy granite fountain in the backyard, so he could test the pump (which was extremely hard to get to because of whoever originally set the fountain did NOT have service in mind). He assessed that we need a new pump, walked us through what type we needed and educated mu husband on how and where to install it. Albuquerque needs more professional, dedicated, kind people like Johnny! If I could give him 100 stars, I would. Late one night, my Rainbird sprinkler system would not shut off. I unplugged the system, but it kept running. I had to have the water company shut off my water at 6 a.m. the next day. I called several sprinkler companies. Some didn't even answer the phone. The ones who did were surly and rude and said they couldn't come out for one or two months. I was so frustrated. Obviously, I couldn't go without water for very long. Then I called Johnny at Sunset Sprinklers. He was a breath of fresh air! He was extremely busy, like everyone else, but he answered the phone, and he had a wonderful attitude! He was friendly and expressed empathy that I was without water. He agreed to come out and at least shut down the Rainbird station and turn my water back on. He scheduled another date to come out and replace that station. I have worked with quite a few sprinkler repair people over the years, and they all seem to be just "phoning it in."
