The waters are calm and my daughter was pretty far out and the water really shallow. Perfectly place to bring a cooler some snacks, a good book and enjoy a beautiful Hawaii day. That's what we did today. I wish we had brought a small grill, maybe next time. So many cool things to see! Of course it's February and the water was perfect! You can see straight to bottom! I will be back to This beach plenty more!!!

I had been working with her son, so I wanted to see him in person and drop off a sympathy card. I asked a bunch of classmates to join me, but Kahana Bay is about a 45-minute drive from Honolulu without traffic. Most people had to work or had other plans. Two gals were able to attend! Towards the end of the journey to Kahana Bay Beach, the road narrows down to one lane. Along the way, the scenery is breathtaking because some of the road is right next to the ocean. Using GPS, I entered the first parking lot, but I didn't see any signs. I parked at the next parking lot - which was for Kahana Bay Camping Site - and I walked on the sand to the Beach Park. I found the large tent with many white picnic tables and benches. I signed in at the reception table and presented my envelope. My friend's son was there - so I had a chance to chat with him before the service. The parking was all free. Some parts of the lot weren't paved. The sand was white and almost powdery-fine in texture. The foliage grew wildly. The shade from the trees was much appreciated. This was a peaceful area with no cell phone service. It was a place where my friend had spent her childhood... and now she has been laid to rest here... Aloha 'oe, Lyanne... until we meet again...

My son (4.5) had surfed before but Tristan got him on the board alone for a couple of waves, and was understanding when his stamina ran out an hour in. My daughter (2.5) was great on land, but hated the waves once in the water, but she was never pressured. I'm an experienced surfer but only get out about once a year so Tristan was able to help me get that muscle memory back, and was patient when I took breaks to check on my kids (and husband! They weren't alone). Even my husband who vowed never to surf again said he'll try it next time with these guys! Would definitely recommend for anyone learning to surf on the north shore!

I've never been one to splurge on lessons for ocean recreational activities until I started SUP…read more Most places in Hawaii are too busy trying to handle multiple clients at the same time, meanwhile I'm floating away into the ocean. I took a SUP lesson with The Surf Professor in Kaneohe and was able to see Chinamans Hat for the first time in a very special way. Ian was calming and his instruction was clear. He taught me about reading the ocean and being able to identify areas I should avoid based on how the ocean behaved on the surface. As we paddled out further he gave me a brief Hawaiian Landscape Mythology talk of what we could see. I was even able to ride a small rolling surf which I'd never thought I'd like. Hands down best SUP lesson I've ever had. I'm planning on taking a surf lesson with The Surf Professor soon. If you want a more personalized experience away from the usual tourist mayhem, this is the guy to go to. Long session to be able to really learn. He was so encouraging with my 4 and 6 year old kids, giving them the confidence to ride alone and stand up! They were standing with Kurt (riding tandem) during the first lesson, and standing up on the board riding by themselves by the second lesson. As someone who surfs herself, but not well enough to teach my own kids, Kurt helped me share with the kids that awesome feeling of triumph with my kids when they stood up on the board the first time. His wife Misa also offers surf lessons and speaks fluent Japanese. It's clear she knows what she's doing too since she surfs tandem with her 6 month old! Also, I'm so glad to support a local small business that is just starting out! Our instructor was amazing, my daughter got up on the board every time and I got up most of the time, lol. But it was the first time surfing for both of us. I would definitely recommend Shakattack to anyone that wants to have a blast in the water and stand up on the board!! Can't wait to come back and do it again!!
