We needed a new awning since ours was ripped - it was originally installed by the previous owner of our house. Stefan and Tanya are very easy to work with and were very helpful, even bringing actual cloth samples to my house when the book of prints was not very helpful. I would give them 5 stars except that I wasn't told that I needed to request that the seams be aligned with the existing frame, and thus, my new awning has visible seams. As this was my first time ordering an awning and the previous one had the seams aligned to the frame, I didn't know that there was any other way that the awning should be/would be made. Also, given the length of the sections, it seems it would have been easy enough to align the seams with the frame. So, anyone ordering an awning, please know that you have to request this! Again, Stefan and Tanya are great. They helped with every other aspect of my project and the prices were very reasonable. read more

We live in S. Walnut creek and needed awnings for our home. We shopped everywhere and received many bids. Most of the other companies bids were a joke. Then along came karla and Stephan. The bid was realistic. The only thing that bothered me was the time frame they were telling me because they were so busy. The time frame was 4-8 weeks. On the 7th week we had not heard from anyone so we were gonna cancel because our needs have changed. Along came stephan who apologized 100 times and did what he needed to do to work with us. This is a family owned small business and they really try to over achieve...AND THATS WHAT THEY DID. I WILL RECOMMEND THEM TO EVERYONE. WE ARE SELF PROCLAIMED PERFECTIONISTS AND COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. I can't comment on having ordered an awning from Sunshade on only on how nice they were when they didn't need to be. I had a special project I was working on and needed a canvas remnant to cover up some sprinkler valves getting damaged by the sun. I called and told Stephan what I was attempting to accomplish and he was nice enough to leave what I needed outside his shop a couple of times since I couldn't make it there before he closed. Sure, it's a simple thing but he helped me solve a problem when no one else would. I'd go back to him if I needed awnings. read more

Stephan's bid was about half of another competitor in town. He and his crew did a fabulous job installing two awnings to create a usable patio out of what was a South facing space that was rarely used. He was patient, answered all questions and provided a high quality product. Installation was smooth, but then a mechanical defect (no fault of Sunshade) caused a one week delay in getting one of the awnings fully operational. Stephan rushed the new motor, had it installed, and did not ask for final payment until it was fully operational and we were completely satisfied. We will use Sunshade again and would recommend them to anyone. read more

I take it all back. An earlier miscommunication resulted in Sunshade Awning Company not following up when I requested service. When I saw Stefan's addendum to my post, I called back right away and was thrilled with prompt, effective and courteous service. My sunshade awning became torn last winter. Stefan arranged for it to be taken down, repaired, cleaned, and reinstalled, and all at a cost far below that to replace it. The servicemen were on time, quick, and thoughtful. The repairs took only a day or two. They were so good, at first I thought the men had made a mistake and were incorrectly installing a new one! My back deck is now restored to its former glory--I look forward to dining 'al fresco' early this evening in my renewed oasis. My confidence in this family owned business is fully restored. Hoping to resolve an issue. I will update my review when awning is repaired. Short story, had a retractable awning installed 10plus years ago from Classic Awning in Brentwood. They are extremely busy. Tried this company. Carla was great and responsive , My large canvas needed repair. They replaced our canvas. 3 days later our canvas broke off the 3 bars that push out the canvas. Odd . Looks to be the brackets were stressed and broke , what I think due to canvas being too tight and not enough slack. Unfortunately the owner said it was due to the age of the hardware. Never had any issues. And now they want to replace the bar but will not warranty their work. They are not taking any responsibility, They keep saying its not their product. So why did they even offer to replace the canvas if the work would not be warrantied. I will update review when this is resolved. Don't let the fact that they are the only game in town and the receptionist sounds like he is European royalty fool you. The designer/ owner was curt and dismissive during the bid process. The follow-up on bid price was nonexistent as was the scheduling and completion of job until I hounded them through multiple emails, calls and voicemail. Easily understood was the first 3 week delay due to staffing illness, but once that was resolved and the awning completed they continued with the same excuse, scheduled and no showed for the install at least 4 times. Here we are 8 weeks out, 5.5 after promised completion with half an awning and 2 more no shows. It will be hard to find someone else in the Bay Area since this type of business has gone the way of the dinosaur, but keep looking.....there's has got to be a better way of doing business. read more

In November of 2013 I went to Sunshade Awning of Concord and ordered hanging curtains so we could use our outside patio in the Winter. Stefan took the order and said he would come out to measure the spaces himself and that they would be done by the end of the year. In mid December I called "my seamstress has been out and I have been away, I will need to come out and measure" January, same response, but he does eventually come out to measure the spaces. I call in mid February "lost my seamstress, just hired a new one, we will get to it asap" End February - panels are ready - come and pick up. I paid the balance on them and took them home hand installed the hooks for hanging. His angles were all wrong, the lengths of the material were different, and the positioning of the hanging grommets is different - some at 11 inches, some at 12 inches and some at 15 inches - making it impossible to link the panels together around pillar. Finally connect with him late March "Sorry about that I will come out and see and get it fixed" - he comes out (April) "yes, I will get that fixed for you" Eventually he comes out, meets my wife and they agree on the problems. Call in May, "lost my seamstress" Call in June......etc. One of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. Drive to San Jose or Sacramento to get your awnings or shades, do not even bother to go to Stefan in Concord. read more

I had a similar experience as some of the other reviewers here had. I manage an apartment complex in Walnut Creek and always try to use local businesses for projects when possible. That really back-fired this time around. Sometimes there are reasons local businesses stay small. Quick background: I've been a property manager for over fifteen years on multiple buildings. Prior to that I operated a chain of retail stores for 15 years. During that period of time I have dealt with hundreds of vendors on many different types of projects (including awnings on several occasions.) This wasn't the worst job I've ever had done by a vendor, but it does rank somewhere in the top ten. Stefan, one of the companies owners, however, is pretty close to the least professional person I've ever dealt with. About the best I can say is he was at least pleasant when he was lying to my face multiple times. After innumerable promises weren't kept, after an incredible number of falsehoods were told and after I had to spend an inordinate amount of time calling and emailing we finally got our awning up -- about three months after it was promised (and this for a very small awning.) read more

What a bummer! I probably should have looked at these reviews before but I was very impressed with the initial customer service and felt comfortable with it. The follow through however, is terrible. We got our awnings approximately 6 weeks after they were expected and after a ton of phone calls. Additionally, the owner let me know I would be getting a discount for hassle however that never materialized. Though the product quality is very nice, the company is clearly in over their heads and just doesn't understand basic customer service principles and basic logistics. Very disappointing! read more

I just had the unpleasant experience of calling the owner to replace my awning under 10 year guarantee. He was very rude to deal with. Finally called & gave me a different date on his receipt vs my receipt. He wanted to be right rather than listen to me. Kept interrupting me then told me to find another awning co. & hung up. I will report him to Sunbrella as well as B.B.B. Stay away! Very unethical. Take your business to someone who has good customer service. He doesn't! read more

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY!!! They are nothing but liars and don't deliver on their commitments. A very nice bubbly lady came out to my business to measure for an awning I needed - she totally sold me with her confidence and assured me of the work they do. I received my quote and had a check for half the work sent out immediately. It took about 5 months to get my awning! I had every excuse in the book as to why it was taking so long....the owner - Stefan told me "I was sick"..."I had the flu"....."on the way to install your awning my driver was in a car accident and your awning was damaged"....."I had the flu"....."I don't have any installers"..... totally ridiculous! I had to threaten legal action to get anything done! Stay away from this place!!!!! read more

I have worked with them for years. They installed my initial awning over ten years ago and annually come out and remove/clean it. My awning had to be custom designed and very sturdy due to my hillside home and high winds. The design and workmanship was outstanding and the annual service is always prompt and complete. I would like to highly recommend Sunshade Awning Co., Inc, Concord, Ca. We had an electric awning that was improperly installed and had fallen off our roof. Stefan Zeigler came out to our house and gave us an estimate after diagnosing the improper first installation. We had the work completed on June 19th, The gentleman who did the repair was a first class professonal with over 25 years of experience. He secured the awning to the rafters which had not been done originally. The awning now works the way it was designed to function. I would recommend Sunshade Awning without any hesitation.
