My partner and I planned to camp in the Porkies. Instead, it turned out that all backcountry camping was illegal due to COVID-19 precautions, and we had to find a place to stay, quickly. It had been a very long, emotionally trying day. The owners were supportive, friendly and helpful, and literally turned a horrible evening into a nice one for us. The room was clean, and charmingly decorated. The heater worked well (it was March when we visited). It was extremely affordable for a waterfront motel near a state park--much less money than anything in Houghton. The beach, across the street down a little nature trail, was a wonderful surprise, and we spent a lot of time there. They are welcoming of dogs, as well. This is, unquestionably, one of the best motel experiences I have ever had, with some of the friendliest staff I have ever met. This review doesn't feel like nearly enough to cover how grateful I am to them for saving the day, but I hope some of you reading this will choose to stay here!

I highly recommend this motel. My wife and I love motor lodges, and this is the nicest one we have ever stayed in. The proprietors are wonderful, friendly, helpful, everything you could want. The rooms are very nice and absolutely spotless. The location is excellent, right across from the beach.

When you follow the path to Superior, you may be greeted by a glorious sunset.

Sometimes, your backpacking trip doesn't go as planned- and you have to find a motel instead. So, you drive along the coast of Lake Superior and look for a place that you can turn in for the night and reset. Our party of six stumbled out of our vehicles and into the warm and inviting front office, where we met Kay and Bruce, the owners. They were so kind, open, and welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay special and memorable. Both are like that aunt and uncle that you always miss and wish you could visit more. The rooms are perfect for weary travelers, and whether you stay one night or ten, you'll feel like you're at home and that Kay and Bruce are glad you're there. Bonus: there is a path that takes you on a short walk to a private beach on Superior.

This is a filthy, outdated, run down shoddy motel. The owners are horrible people. The room smelled strongly of mold and mildew. The bathroom floor was rotted out. There is a board under the carpet outside the bathroom door that is a tripping hazard. The plugs are a fire hazard and any plug in items just fall out. There was broken furniture in our room, which they tried to hide by throwing a blanket over the back of the chair and putting a throw pillow on the back. It collapsed when my husband sat in it, and he slammed his head against the wall, hurting his back and neck. The owners then tried to charge us for "damages, saying they would be charging our credit card to replace both chairs in the room, since they were as a "set". I would guess they were from the 50's. I locked my credit card to stop the charges. The owner then became absolutely livid and I was afraid for my safety. He continued to harass and intimidate me for money. When we refused, he accused us of smoking in the room. He called the Sheriff and kicked us out. I insisted that the Sheriff inspect the room. He stated that he could not smell smoke. He stayed with us to make sure our departure was safe. I am a Senior citizen. These owners tried to intimidate and extort money. I gave an honest review on trip advisor, describing my experience. They accused us of using drugs and drinking in the room. They did enter our room while we were away, as another reviewer reported. We found they had gone through our things. The owner behaved very aggressively towards us, I felt very unsafe. We did find that they were outside our room at all hours, which was very creepy. Also, I found it odd that the owner kept insisting that he did not have cameras in the rooms. Steer clear of this place, it's a Bates Motel. The owners are just horrible people. This is a remote area, not a lot of options, but keep going. I'd sleep in my car before staying here.

Perfect long weekend. Owners are wonderful and so nice. Great little place! We'll be coming back

I stayed here twice last year with my mother and dog en route to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and had great experiences both times. In addition to the property's proximity to Lake Superior, the Porkies, a nice small town, and many beautiful waterfalls, the Motel itself is welcoming and comfortable with both housekeeping cottages and motel rooms available. We stayed in a pair of "adjoining rooms" which was an ideal setup for us with privacy available and a shared kitchen with dining table in one of the rooms. The grounds are charming and nice to walk around, and the Sunshine has its own lakefront accessible across the street and down a short wooded path. The owners, Bruce and Kay, were helpful and fun to get to know, and their dogs were adorable. This is one of the most pet-friendly places I have ever stayed at, but I think travelers without pets would feel equally at home. Customer service was above and beyond. On each visit I unintentionally left something behind; in June, it was some local jam which Kay saved for me and returned during our October visit (I hadn't even missed it!), and in October, it was my dog's squeaky ball that she mailed back with a bonus treat for my dog for having to put up with such a forgetful owner. I'm looking forward to our next visit!

I seriously have never written a review in my life but this place deserves it! Such a beautiful gem with so much to offer and is the perfect place to stay whether its for a night or a week. The owners Nu and Anthony were so inviting and genuine it made the stay at Sunshine an experience my friend and I will never forget. Very clean rooms, affordable prices, nightly bonfire with s'mores, beach access with a beautiful view of the porcupine mountains, and a truly unique and genuine experience! We will hopefully be back soon

We passed by an impressive frog symphony each evening on our walk to the beach to see the sunset. Others made campfires on the beach to watch the beautiful sunsets. Most of the time we walked along the beach shoreline with no one else in sight. The cabin is nicely landscaped with hostas, purple iris, miniature roses and other flowers. There is a sliding glass door which opens to a nice deck with a charcoal grill. We enjoyed the free nightly popcorn from the Inn which was a bonus. The Fox Den cabin has a ramp up to the front door. Inside is a cozy kitchen, dining area with ceiling light and fan, a cozy living room with a sofa, TV, and cozy gas fireplace. The bathroom is roomy with a hot shower. The 2 bedrooms had queen size beds and a dresser and closet. The kitchen has an electric stove, toaster, coffee maker, and microwave. Some small improvements could be a larger Tv with better sound and add on the Hallmark Movie Channel, ceiling fan in both bedrooms, some cute water glasses, and a small cutting board. Overall Fox Den Cabin at Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins is a cozy cabin on Lake Superior with beach access and good location to explore many waterfall hikes including the Porcupine Mountains State Park trails.

Slice of wedding heaven…read more My husband and I had our wedding ceremony and reception at Chippewa Retreat Resort this June. The title of this post came from many of our guests declaring Chippewa Retreat Resort "a little slice of heaven." Every expectation we had going into our wedding weekend was blown away by how fabulous the entire experience was. The staff at Chippewa Retreat redefined accommodating. The owner was present throughout the weekend and was clearly committed to making everyone's experience a positive one. The resort staff was extremely friendly. They were always ready and willing to help with even the smallest detail. Franny, the events coordinator was a good as it gets. She made almost every request we had a reality. She helped brainstorm fun ideas, communicated regularly and promptly, always maintained a professional yet happy demeanor and was extremely fair through the entire process. The location of the resort cannot be beat. The cabins are beautifully decorated, comfortable and come with amazing views of the lake. The resort itself is centered around a beautiful pool, which served as a perfect meeting ground for all of our friends and family. The resort grounds are meticulously maintained with flowers everywhere. The day of the wedding was a truly a dream come true. Franny and the rest of the Chippewa Resort staff helped decorate the reception hall and ceremony area exactly the way I had imagined it. They provided all the necessary sound equipment for the ceremony, set up the chairs and helped make sure everything was set to go. Everything went off smoothly and I was able to take the entire day in and enjoy every moment knowing the staff had everything under control. The reception was held in the resort's newly built restaurant. We didn't have to do much decorating because the restaurant area is gorgeous as is. Our guests raved about the dinner, saying it was the best wedding food they had ever had, some said it was the best FOOD they had ever had. We stayed on Sunday and ate at the restaurant because we loved it so much. Putting all the pieces of the wedding puzzle together can be a lot of work, however I truly enjoyed the entire process working with Franny and the rest of the Chippewa Resort crew. They were dedicated to making our experience one we would cherish for a long time to come. I must agree with our guests, we found our slice of wedding heaven at Chippewa Retreat Resort.

This seems to be the biggest location around for folks coming to see the Porcupine Mountains…read more(Porkies); the hotel is one of the last things you'll drive past before you enter the park grounds. Check-in was fast and seamless; room was clean and comfortable; proximity to Lake Superior was nice. We enjoyed watching the waves from the little slice of beach the hotel had behind it; there is a also a bonfire pit and quite a few comfy outdoor benches here, as well as some picnic benches nearby for folks wanting to enjoy a picnic outside. As far as restaurant options locally: the hotel is attached to one of the few restaurants in the area, so that was a good fall back on option. We passed on eating there after reading some of the reviews, choosing to go into downtown Ontonagon instead (check out Syl's!) and Antonio's (about 20-30 mins away off of 64 & 28). Again, it's just nice to have the choice nearby if you're tired of driving. Reasons this hotel didn't get a solid 5 star review is: first, the staff are not particular friendly, never greeted us all the times we walked past/obviously had questions. We had to initiate conversation with them. Secondly, although the hotel had signs saying masks are required by state mandate, some staff were not wearing masks, relying on the plexiglass barrier only.
