Trying to reach someone here is like chasing a ghost. Every time I call, I'm met with someone who either sounds half-asleep, mid-yawn, or like they're chewing through lunch. On top of that, they speak so fast it's like they're in a speed-talking contest--and before you can even ask a follow-up question, click--they've already hung up. What kind of hospital operates like this? This is supposed to be a respected medical center, yet the phone staff make it nearly impossible to get the help you need. I was just trying to make an appointment--after 9AM--and I was told to "call back later because they're making the schedule now." Seriously? If the front-line communication is this unprofessional, what does that say about everything else behind the scenes? SUNY Downstate, please do better. Your patients deserve respect, clarity, and basic courtesy--starting with a phone call that doesn't feel like a chore on your end. PS. I have been in isolation now over 2 weeks from covid. This room is freezing. I eat cold food. I have 7 blankets on. I'm covid free. All I get told is that it's the environmental team that has to lift the restrictions. I can't leave this room. I need rehab. I used all my vacation time up from work already. Bills are getting backed up. No 1 in this place seems to care. You ask a question you get diff. Answers. I have not spoke to my social worker yet or my case manager. All they seem to want to do is keep me hear run the same test over and over and say that's what the Dr wants. Pump me with iv give shots. I'm so done. If not recommend coming here. The nurses and there workers under them are great. Not there faults. It's the ones above them. This is the worse experience i ever had from a place that suppose to make you feel better and get better. How they are treating me and all is not very nice. Today I'm having my brother sign me out. It's a busy hospital. With that said they save my life 9 years ago and for that I'm forever grateful. I recently took my grandmother and the immediate care provided was impeccable. Despite being short staffed physicians and nurses each one of them rallied to ensure she was triage, had oxygen and fully assessed. Three hours into being in the unit the ER doc came and apologized for the excessive wait. Informed us it was just him and two fellow and will be with us asap. Within the hour I was told her treatment plan and that she will be admitted. To date as I write this review she's still admitted. Physicians have called me, keeping me abreast of her care, results and treatment plans. Downstate you've done well! if i could give this place no stars i absolutely would. the pure waste of time and lack of empathy and care that everyone in this hospital has is actually mind boggling. brought my friend here to the ER for mental health reasons and they truly couldn't have been less helpful or communicative. the fact i even had to keep asking for bottles of water tells you that the staff here couldn't give less of a f**k. the conditions they're kept her in only exasperated her mental state. they made her stay on watch and the nurse who is also watching a seriously disturbed elderly patient urinating on herself and had to yell at this woman once every five minutes. They took her blood twice because they messed up the first time and they hadn't even cleaned or attended the wound that she came in for in the first place. they did little to nothing to calm her down or care for what she was expressing. they paraded their mentally unwell patients through the halls, sans privacy, and we even witnessed someone restrained and almost sedated due to a minor misunderstanding. They do not have psychiatrists on call and will make you wait well over 24hrs to even start your evaluation. read more

Informed 2 different nurses that my mum had a BM at 4 pm. At 4:30 pm I had to go to the nurses station to get wipes, chucks and a clean gown to clean her myself. At 4:45 now the nurse is asking if someone came to clean her. Then since she's being discharged ask them for a pull up pamper, I was informed they don't have any. I had to use a chuck and put some scotch tape to keep in place for her to go home. By the way my mum is 93 yes old. Poorly run facility!!! Never again read more

In my line of work I have to call hospitals often unfortunately but this one takes the cake! I have never been on hold for such a long time. When someone finally picked up the line, they sounded completely rude and unprofessional. The first time I called someone finally picked up after numerous rings and then promptly hung up, the second time I encountered this uncouth being that answered then put me on hold for a ridiculous amount of time never to return again. I called several more times (with the phone ringing obnoxiously at least 10 times, the MAIN LINE) and got the same tired operator who also seems to have an attitude and I still have yet to be able to resolve my task. 0 stars. Terrible appointment hotline and customer service. I scheduled a GYN appointment for 3 weeks in advance. I got a voicemail asking to call back, but when returned, no one knew why I got that call. I showed up for my appointment and they told me it was scheduled for 2.5 hours earlier. So they got my appt time wrong--this could have been said in the VM. Or there should be a staff note attached to my client file. Instead, they blamed me for their mistake and couldn't see me. They said the next available appointment is for 1 month from now. I will admit I was running late for the appointment, so I called twice to give a heads up and update. Neither time did they let me know my appt time was changed, despite verifying my name and appt time. So done with this place before I even had a chance to see a doctor. What a shame. read more

The nurses/doctors in Labor & Delivery were kind, caring and exceptional. In Nov of 2020 we were in the care of a nurse (of Asian decent - if anyone knows her name let us know please!) who answered my wife's questions, qualms and always tended to her needs quickly and without fault. (we were told later that she's the nicest nurse in that unit - however I feel everyone in Healthcare should carry a certain empathy). After our daughter was born, the next day or two we were transfered to Maternity, where the hospitality paled on comparison. Rooms were small, cramped, old fashioned and nurses weren't as warm. However everyone did what needed to be done - Doctors kept checking on us throughout the day/nights. Food for patients? Decent. read more

My mom had ambulatory surgery that turned into a one night stay. I have to say the staff (from the security guard and front desk people to the nurses and the staff) were fantastic! I got sick due to having a Sickle cell pain crisis and was rushed to Downstate hospital by the EMS. I usually go to Methodist Hospital ( which is an amazing hospital ) however the EMS said they couldn't take me that far being that I was in so much pain and had trouble breathing. After arriving at downstate ER. I was helped by doctors that were trying their best to help get the pain down. The problem was a nurse named ( MS.Blackwood ) she was such a rude and mean nurse. She treated me as if I did something so bad to her ( maybe she was having a bad day ) but even so you don't treat patients poorly. To me it seems like she had a problem with Sickle cell patients. The pain was so Overwhelming. After getting my first medicine after a while it started to wear off and I called for my nurse her exact words were " ill be there give me a second I'm doing something more important " like WOAHHH you shouldn't say that to a patient we all are IMPORTANT ( I was thinking like what did I do to this lady for her to be so mean to me ) Then I overheard her talking about me to another nurse which I got her name as well ( Ms.Warell ) saying I am crying for pain medication I am probably faking it just to get pain medication. Hearing her say that hurt my feelings so bad. I would NEVER FAKE A SICKLE CELL PAIN CRISIS FOR DRUGS!! It sucks that Sickle cell patients are looked down on and viewed in such a manner. Once she told the new nurse that was on shift those things about me that nurse was very standoff-ish and asked for me to be switched to another nurse named SAL. The nasty things Ms.Blackwood said about me painted a picture in Ms.Warell's head that she didn't want to help me either SO Unprofessional!!! It was right before shift change I asked Ms.Blackwood for my medicine ( keep in mind she was standing right in front of me ) she rolled her eyes and said " oh no I'm off now I'm getting out of here " that lady was evil & I will report this problem until I feel it has been taken care of! A few months ago I wrote a review about Kings County Hospital and the unnecessarily bad attitudes I encountered while in pain. Today my mother is the patient and so I decided to take her across the street to University Hospital ER as she complained about radiating pain down her arm. My experience here hasn't been much better. Although I'm a native New Yorker I've come to realize that the attitude & mood of New Yorkers as a whole is "I don't owe you anything and why are you bothering me?" The job of any healthcare worker is beyond stressful and tiring....I get that but when you allow yourself to become so jaded in your career that you cannot calibrate when you're being evil to people who don't warrant it, it's time to retire. I gave 3 stars only because I felt the doctor was patient and took time to explain things to my 85 year old mother. A courtesy not given my the triage nurse (who had a very bad attitude) and another nurse on the floor who was very sarcastic with me because I chose to alert her to the patient beside my mother who was blind and calling out to nurse and no one responded to him. As a present nursing student I pass no judgement on these representatives of the hospital because I am sure one day I'll better understand the stress that they are put under. However, I'm thankful to them for showing me exactly the kind of nurse I never want to be. read more

Came to the ER in excruciating pain, I believed I had a ruptured cyst. I entered and wrote my name down on a slip of paper and slid it under a panel into what looked like an abandoned desk. No one seemed to be picking up these piling up slips and after 2 hours no one had taken my information and had only seen one nurse appear for a patient. It was dirty, low lighting, very crowded, and clearly underfunded. After my two hour wait, I got the feeling they would do nothing for me and likely send me home. I walked across the street to the much cleaner Kings County, I was taken right away, triaged, and spent the night receiving various tests and with kind doctors who assessed the issue. I will end up getting surgery with my preferred hospital Columbia, but if you need and ER in a pinch, King County is much better if you need answers. read more

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR ELDERLY PATIENTS!!!! The MD's are very skilled and professional and friendly, but the Nursing staff is not. My aunt came into this hospital for blisters on the feet. However, she ended up with a giant bedsore that became infected, developed Sepsis and died. The nurses barely bathed her, and when we asked what was going on while she was slipping out of consciousness, they seemed afraid to answer. Worst hospital I have ever been too. I was a patient in the Gyn clinic years ago- clinic was overly crowded with excessive wait time, rude staff, no way of paying your co-pay. This is by far the worst hospital in New York came here with my boyfriend who is very sick not life threatening however we arrived at 11:00pm it's 3:57am and we still haven't seen a doctor. I've read the reviews and I have to agree YOU ONLY COME TO THIS PLACE TO DIE, because the doctors sure won't help you! The staff is rude and uncaring the nurses have way too much free time on their hands. I've gone across the street to the DELICATESSEN DELI where half of them stand around for minutes on end waiting on their food everything from hamburgers to grilled cheese. Doctors are constantly being called out of the emergency room to the main building. There's no expediency what so ever. Even with insurance your still not guaranteed treatment. I'm writing this review as a warning to all those who might come here but also to raise awareness that this kind of blatant disregard for the well being of patients has to STOP!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE PLASE PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE DO NOT SUBJECT YOUR LOVED ONES TO THE COLD CALIUS DISREGARD WHICH THEY WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE SHOWN! Resembles a prison. Lighting is very dull and depressing. Patients share rooms and the paint is peeling off the walls. Patient rooms do not have showers. Heard renovations are being done so thank God. The parking situation is TRASH. It was truly depressing to visit my Granny here. NO TV!!!!! The first thing they tell you is that it's free what they don't tell you is that only about two rooms on each floor have them working. The nurse I spoke to said this is been going on since February no one is going to fix it but they will take your money. If you have to stay there for more than a day you will be bored out your behind TVs do not work !! Especially on the seventh floor, no one wants to fix ithem, no one knows who to call to fix it everyone blames everyone else for it even though the company itself said it was the engineer in department's responsibility...but you can rest assure my insurance was charged every single solitary day! read more

Like a previous review I said if you know you need to be admitted do not go there, you will be bored because every admitting room has a TV that is nonworking and when you tell someone the answer is always I'll let them know. I understand that being nurses it's not their job to fix TVs but it is their job to keep the patients happy and comfortable I was there for six days and it was not pleasant staring at the walls all day. If I could give a rating of ZERO stars I would! My Downstate horror story actually started 2 weeks ago, just about. I had found out I was pregnant, and saw some abnormal bleeding. I immediately rushed to the ER. That night they ran my hormone levels through my blood and two student doctors performed a vaginal check and sono. The sonogram was a complete waste as neither one of them knew what to look for. Upon completion of the sono I was told to follow up within the upcoming week, only for the dr to rush back to me and say "no the attending said that would be too soon to rerun your tests so come two Mondays from now." That would've been Monday the 11th. I missed the appointment for the 11th and was called by one of the student doctors on the 12th to rs. I told him I would be able to make it in Thursday morning as that was the only day I started work late. The student insisted that I come in ASAP, even after I explained to him that I get off of work after 4 everyday. He ASSURED that I would still be able to come in for my bloodwork and my dating sono as the main lab closes late anyway. So Wednesday I hauled ass from work to make sure I can have all of my tests done and I could continue on with life as planned. When I arrived Wednesday, the main lab was completely empty. I signed in and sat down. There were at least like 3 of 4 phlebotomists in the back engulfed in conversation amongst each other. After about 20 minutes another phlebotomist rushes in screaming "who's next?" If this is how you were calling in patients why make a sign in sheet? She did bloodwork for an elderly man who came in after me, then took me. She looks in the system and can't even find the order for my tests. When she finally did find the order it said it was closed out. She went to her supervisor, Ms. Henry (legit the only employee who actually works in the entire hospital), who had me go to L&D and have the doctors call her so she could tell them how to put the order in bc they clearly didn't know how to do it. After the blood was drawn (after about 5 attempts), I went back to L&D to have my sono done. I had the doctors tell me to come back Thursday morning so a sono tech could do it bc they "don't know what they're supposed to look for" smfh .. so bright and early Thursday morning my boyfriend and I go to l&d for an ultrasound.. I got there 8:15 && wasn't called until 10.. the sono tech asked if I had gotten my result for my bloodwork, I told her no.. she went to look at the result.. I asked if everything were ok and she responds "I'm not a doctor u talk to the doctor about it" and walked out the room. My doctor comes in, looks at the sono, and asks why I've "disappeared for 2 weeks" .. once I explain read more

The staff at SUNY Downstate is helpful and cordial. However, the scheduling is not up to par. My mother was scheduled for an MRI and was told to leave and return another day because of scheduling issues. One time she received a call from Downstate to "confirm" an appointment, and when she arrived, there was no record of it. Again she had to reschedule and return another day. After waking up covered in vomit and no memory of anything that had happened after drinking my second drink, I came to the conclusion that someone may have drugged my drink the night prior. I contacted the police and they told me to get drug tested immediately because "date rape" drugs leave the body quickly. Kings County Hospital said they don't do drug tests, so I went across the street to SUNY Downstate Medical Center and went to the ER. I understandably was pretty shaken up and didn't feel well, and I hoped the doctors and nurses would help comfort me and explain what had happened. Instead, I was met with condescension, ignorance, and insensitivity. On the preliminary form I had written that I thought I had been drugged by a "date rape drug" and wanted to get a drug test. After waiting several hours, I was finally called back to explain what had happened to two nurses. They started their questioning by asking multiple times if I had been raped. When I tried to explain that I was almost positive I hadn't because my friends had kept me with them all night, one nurse chastised me for calling these drugs "date rape drugs" because it made me sound like I had been raped. They accused me of providing them with inaccurate information, and they framed their criticism as if I had purposefully misled them. When I explained that that was the colloquial term and apologized for the miscommunication, they claimed they had never heard it before and could not understand why I referred to the drugs this way. They then lectured me about leaving my drink out into the open and criticized me for putting myself into a dangerous situation. This made what was already a terrifying situation so much worse. At this point, I received a container to take a urine test. Finally, about five hours after I had arrived at the hospital, I was I was called back to see the doctor. My urinalysis was negative. I know myself and know what happened the night before was not okay and not normal. I question the hospital's testing procedures (the doctor even explained that the test might not cover what was in my system) and I question the length of time I had to wait in the waiting room, especially since the situation was so time-sensitive. Even more so, I question the training of their staff to deal with sensitive issues. Someone who has been hurt or violated by another person should receive help, care, and kindness, not judgment. read more

I spent 8 hours in the ER fast track and at the end still didn't know what was wrong with me. I came in with severe abdominal pain and could barely stand or walk and at one point felt faint. They moved no quicker than a Golden Krust employee (which is notorious for being slow). I was given an IV of pain meds and still was feeling the pain. Dr. Artist ( who is the only saving grace in this experience) called for 4.5 hours trying to get me a CTSCAN. Once she left I was ignored disregarded dismissed and left for dead. Normally I would be joking about that but this is the hospital, the emergency room and I expect to be treated with urgency and respect. Or try just treated at all. I went in at 4pm and left and 1am STILL in pain STILL not knowing what was wrong with me. STILL extremely afraid for my health and life. What a great waste of real estate that Downstate. read more

Well what can I say about this hospital? It seems to be a neighborhood staple with a fairly proud history. Many future doctors serve their residency here so if you're coming to be treated, you will be under the care of a student doctor who works under a senior attending doctor. If you're coming to the ER, plan to wait for a while because they are severely understaffed due to financial problems that has caused many of their employees to be laid off. It looks fairly unkept but I'm sure it's due to their financial struggles, I actually saw two rats chasing each other at the emergency room entrance, but to be fair, it is located in the hood. read more

Where do I start...my mom got sick and was taken to the ER at SDMC at 3pm and is a diabetic, poor thing was there in the ER without any food until the following day's lunch and was kept there in the ER for 2 days before transfer to regular patient care floor. I took my friend with me to visit her, I was embarrassed of the hospital, it seem like no one cleans the hospital, it's run down and seem like you're in a third world country. There are no doctors to talk to or ask any questions. The nurses.. all that they do is just conversates with each other than to help the patients. On the day of taking my mom home, she waited all day for her personal belongings. I arrived to take her home and I had to wait another 3-4 hours for her belongings. This hospital is a big old plain shit hole that really need to shut down, the service is very poor. I am surprised people are being treated like this in AMERICA. SDMC deserves a 0 star. Nurses let beeping IV monitors beep for 45 mins or even 10 mins at 4am!! I was on 6th fl Rm 626 Jan 4-6, 2011. Nursing staff and teams of doctors need lessons from social media. Listen!! Ask if anything about your visit has not served you well and let patients know you want the truth. And b4 leaving a patient on any contact, ask one question: "Anything else?". It's ironic that the bulletin board outside my door identifies the challenges: poor communication skills of staff, poor promptness response to call bell, friendliness, etc. "Knowing" doesn't make a difference. My daughter had a very bad experience this evening at Downstate, she was nine months pregnant in excruciating pain, having contractions every ten minutes and when she and her husband arrived there say around four she was informed they had no beds and four patients were in front of her, she then asked can she at least sign in and they were very nasty and flat out said no and told her to go and take a walk, at this point she was livid and in pain, she called me and I told her to go straight to Methodist which in my opinion is one of the best hospitals out here, so long story short when she arrived they immediately registered her in got her propped up to check her vitals and guess what she was eight centermeters, and we found out what they did was turn them away, but I promise they haven't heard the last of me her mother, my daughter ended having a beautiful baby girl in a hospital on a bed instead of the lobby of downstate, the freaking worst... read more

Started off on one end of the hospital that was absolutely wonderful. Had to come to do blood work at the outpatient clinic and it all went to HELL!!!! Signed in and was supposed to be first come first serve but techs kept taking their friends and the regulars first.
