I was born at this hospital and lived nearby the majority of my life. However, until recently, I had not been here much. My mother was recently hospitalized here and I had mixed feelings. While she was in ICU some of the staff were great, but once transferred to the regular part of the hospital, I didn't care for one of the doctors. She was rude and condescending, including with one of the nurses. My new primary doctor is here, I started to see her last year. I had no issues with her, but did have issues with the billing department. I believe this place has undergone some nice changes over the years-- just think they have some bad seeds sprinkled throughout this hospital. read more

ambulatory recovery room was the best. after my hernia surgery they woke me up and made me feel welcome back to the land of the living. especially Jamie, who treated me with kindness and respect. Being that I'm half Italian, and her being of Italian descent, we kind of got that warm connection of our heritage kicking in right away, which made the recovery process run a lot smoother than normal. The greatest thank you to an older gentleman security guard! Today around 2pm he appeared to be going on break and saw me assisting my mom to walk. He returned with a wheelchair from the ER and graciously assisted us! Truly appeared like a guardian angel! Have an emergency? I would suggest you go somewhere else. I'm truly disgusted by this place. I originally went to the stand-alone emergency room, and we were seen within 5 minutes of check-in. That part was great until, 2 hours later, they couldn't help us and told us we needed to go to the main hospital (this location). I asked if I could just drive, and they insisted that my partner needed to go to the Emergency vehicle so he could be seen faster. We left that location at 9:45pm (mind you, we were there since 6:02pm). It is now 2:48am the next day, and yet we are still in the emergency waiting room... they have patients stacked in front of each other (the ones being admitted) and overcrowding with people standing around. Growing up, I've been to plenty of hospitals and have seen my fair share of emergency rooms. This place is filthy! Gloves were on the ground, the red medical disposal box for needles was overflowing, and no nurse was listening when people called out for help. I saw more doctors and nurses sitting at computers than up caring for people. I think the only reason someone came to us after a while is because of me, asking questions trying to figure out next steps. The nurse finally came to tell us we have to wait until about 7am until a surgeon can come... Why? We could have just stayed home and figures it out I guess, it would have been better than whatever this is. read more

From the moment we arrived, the environment was distressing. A hospital cleaning staff member was loudly cursing and complaining about patients being messy, repeatedly using profanity ("f-words"), with no regard for the fact that children were present and trying to rest. This behavior was unprofessional and completely unacceptable in a pediatric setting. Our experience with the medical staff was equally troubling. A nurse inserted a thermometer into my child's mouth so forcefully that it caused bleeding in her gums. Another nurse struggled to insert an IV and began digging in her arm, clearly unsure of what they were doing, causing unnecessary pain and distress. The most traumatizing part of our visit was the sonogram. I explained clearly to the sonogram technician that my daughter was there for an appendix rule out and was experiencing significant abdominal pain. Despite this, the technician pressed extremely hard on her lower abdomen for over an hour and a half..the longest sonogram I've ever witnessed. My daughter cried in pain the entire time, and when I asked for a break for her, the technician coldly said she "didn't need one." There was no empathy, no flexibility, and no sensitivity to the fact that this was a child in visible pain. Overall, I am deeply disappointed by the lack of bedside manner, compassion, and basic professional standards exhibited by staff during our visit. This experience has left my daughter frightened of hospitals and has severely undermined my trust in this facility's ability to care for pediatric patients. DO NOT COME HERE. read more

ER- Doctors and Nurses are the worst. Don't expect to be #thePitt Or ER tv shows. They are glued to their phones and tv screen. No compassion or even help. They leave you in the middle of the floor, without help. NOTE, if you don't speak English, it's even worse. Especially if you're a hispanic men, they will just not help! ICU nurses are okay and doctors are not bad..... BUT if you ever get a room in Aron Building, 5th floor, please just leave. The nurses will let you bleed to death. They have no compassion, they are just there for their pay check. Doctors are just out of school, no comments but just to be aware, doctors are in training so if your loved ones need much needed medical care, please advocate for them to a different floor! Nurse CASIMIR, on 5th floor, Aron building, is the worst nurse that can be an example of all the nurses in the world. I am formally reporting a deeply disturbing experience at Maimonides Medical Center involving medical neglect, professional misconduct, and discrimination based on language proficiency.Chronology of Events:Failure to Provide Language Access: Upon arrival at 11:40 PM for my wife's severe Shingles pain, we used a phone app to communicate. Dr. Ryan Lebuhn briefly examined her rash but left without providing any professional translation services, despite our clear inability to communicate in English.Extended Neglect in Room 83: We were placed in Room 83 for nearly two hours without any medical check-ins. During this time, I approached various desks three times for help. Each time, I was dismissed. Staff at the inner desk claimed I "had to wait," while staff at the outer desk claimed it "wasn't their responsibility." The front reception simply told me there was "no Chinese translator available" and I must wait for the doctor.Indifference to Suffering: While my wife was crying out in pain from shingles-related nerve damage, I witnessed Dr. Lebuhn making personal phone calls and walking around aimlessly. Other staff members at the nursing station were laughing and joking. When I begged them for help, they repeatedly replied, "I don't know, I don't work in this section."Professional Misconduct (Dr. Ryan Lebuhn): Desperate, I located Dr. Lebuhn and asked who the ER supervisor was. He claimed he was the supervisor. When I questioned his identity, he aggressively slammed his ID badge onto the table in an intimidating manner. I have never witnessed such unprofessional behavior from a medical professional.Improper Discharge: Shortly after, we were given discharge papers and prescriptions via a phone translator. When I protested that my wife was still in severe pain and had received no medication, Dr. Lebuhn lied, stating a nurse would provide it. However, the nurse only applied a topical patch. When I asked why no oral medication was given, she stated it was not ordered in the system and we had to go to a pharmacy the next day. read more

Waited for hours with a fractured pelvis. Couldn't get crutches or a wheelchair to use bathroom. No real staff - didn't see a nurse or doctor or even a heath aid until I started to make a scene. If you are against this place, then God forbid you get sick because these people will take care the heck out of you. Yes, this hospital is overwhelmed by patients and yet, here are the employees getting the job done and doing a deng good job at it. You will find lack of professionalism at every job, but literally, every encounter I've had here has been pleasant. From security, doctors, nurses, maintenance crew, everyone, has been so helpful and sincere. My mom had been here a few times and not once has she been abandoned or mistreated here. HUGE, IMMENSE shout out to everyone that works on the 2ND FLOOR. HUGE, IMMENSE shout out to EVERYONE that works here; that continues to work their butt off for the sake of saving the community. The hospital doesn't need a new person in charge. It needs the state of New York to employ more people, to give them the proper funding to get more people on the team so that they aren't short staffed. My mother and aunt have been frequent visitors at Maimonides. I have accompanied them multiple times, experiencing and witnessing what is happening at the hospital. When my aunt had a sudden heart attack, she was rushed to Maimonides. The doctors took expert care of her, reviving her back to life. No complaints about doctors' proficiency. However, her recovery and stay has been horrendous. She felt sick and in need of rest, but every time she drifted to slumber, she was awoken by a slew of staff who were bothering her even after all her tests and check-ups have been completed. She described being awoken every half an hour "as if in a concentration camp, by sudden flashes of light" and invasive hands and voices yelling and pulling at her from every direction. In three days, she did not get any rest due to loud noises that were constantly bothering her in her room from the open door and the loud hallways. My mother had a mastectomy with cancer removal at Maimonides. Extremely invasive and difficult surgery to endure. She arrived at the hospital at 7am. The pre-surgery procedures were very stretched out, lasting double the time they should've. Her surgery has been unexpectedly pushed back by almost two hours. No one notified us or explained why. All the while, she has been waiting, alone, secluded in a pre-op waiting room, dehydrated and hungry, since she was not allowed to eat since midnight the night prior. Thankfully, the surgery went smoothly. However, the Maimonides plastic surgeon who was performing the second part of the surgery, did not even come out to us to say a word of encouragement about how the surgery went. We had to call multiple numbers to hunt down the first surgeon [who we've known for a while] to give us a brief update on the situation. After surgery, my mother was brought to post-op recovery area, which is a shared, loud space where multiple staff and patients come and go at any point of day and night. My mother was brought out of anesthesia and was waiting to be brought to her room, to spend the night. She waited from 2pm to 11pm. Nine hours. In a madhouse of noise and chaos. We were not allowed to see her until 6pm, even though the space was shared and EVERYONE was coming through and passing the sick patients. After we left, my mother continued waiting for her room. All the patients who have been brought to the post-op space have already been assigned to rooms. More post-op patients came and went. My mother remained in that limbo, suffering. In the meantime, nurses around her were engaging in the most unprofessional behavior. Two were yelling at each other from the opposite ends of the room. One was on her phone for the entire time she was at her shift--FIVE HOURS. Not once did she ask patients for whom she was supposed to care for if they event wanted water. Another nurse was discussing his weekend plans and an annoying patient with his colleague right next to my sick mother. My mother was in a great deal of pain, so she needed sleep to recover. However, the INCESSANT noise created by unprofessional nurses did not allow her a chance to drift off to sleep under the heavy dose of morphine. My mother kept asking nurses to quiet down. She kept asking for her room. Everyone seemed to forget about her. At 11:30pm, while still in that same spot in hell, my mother started having a mental breakdown and her blood pressure jumped to a dangerous level. Doctors immediately rushed to administer drugs and calm her down. All her vitals were dangerously elevated. Within 15 minutes she was brought to her room. Which had two empty, ready beds. Meaning, there were rooms available, but no one cared to bring extremely sick patients to their recovery rooms for the night. At night, my mother remembered my aunt's complaints about nonstop invasive visits. My mother wanted to sleep. She was in an exorbitant amount of pain. She needed to survive it while sleeping. She barely got any sleep because she was constantly check on nurses, who did not read her charts to see that other staff has already done rounds to check on my mother. The following day, we came to take my mother home. She was supposed to leave by noon, but the nurse who was in charge of her paperwork was busy doing who knows what. I had to hunt frontdesk staff [who were incidentally talking on the phone] to find the nurse. After three hours of waiting, we were finally discharged. I called the guests relations personnel several times. They were busy addressing other guests' concerns. Then they just forgot. So I had to call the fourth time for a representative to finally come to speak to us. He was very courteous and personable--definitely well trained to pacify upset guests. We voiced our grievances and he apologized profusely. He wrote up a report of our complaints, saying we are not the first ones to complain and that he will address our concerns with the head of nurses during staff meetings. I sure hope he will. I liked my one-week hospitalization at "Maimonides", and this was, only, one time, however they won my attention and I have them five-starred, thus. I was in mental department, and my stay betided in June 2018. Snacks were light and good for a hospital. My time at emergency room was overnight, and I got hospitalized at evening. I had fun art activity from day 1 to day 6 (drawing + needlework with beads and wires) , and was discharged on the next day. The very annoying shots were not given to me at all, as, at 6 am sharp, unlike at Lutheran. At Maimonides - they took my blood for test just once, and in the afternoon, but not in the morning, that's for sure! Phlebotomy was often done at there, once a day, as long as I had a stay out there. read more

I was taken to Maimonides Emergency Department on 10th Avenue in Brooklyn two days ago. EMS transported me because I was having chest pains. From the time I got there, about 7:30 AM till I was discharged before 12 Noon I got the best care I have ever had in any Emergency Room here in Brooklyn. Do not go too often thankfully. They explained everything they were going to do, blood test, chest x-ray, EKG. Everything was done very quickly. Thankfully I was not having a heart attack but just muscular pain. Well my mom finally made the move to get surgery on her back. After weeks of watching her in pain. Why do parents act so stubborn? Seems like I see where I get it from. Lol She had surgery for back and was recuperating in main building for 1 week. Then they put her in rehab across the street from emergency room. Btw I used to work here back. I mean back in the day 1982. It's not easy watching a family member or parent suffer in pain. Thank goodness surgery went well. Nurses were very sweet and kind. You know sometimes wish life was more simple. So our health is all really have and hopefully a good doctor. read more

Negligent, unempathetic, careless, and unprofessional. Do not take your loved one here. I understand that during these times, the hospital has an influx of patients and the place is probably understaffed and overwhelmed. However, that does not excuse staff from denying patients basic care and rights. While there were plenty of staff that were kind, helpful and respectful, a good number of them are lacking in communication and prioritizing. I was here for three weeks visiting a sick relative and throughout my time here saw so many patient right violations. The rooms are not kept clean unless you're lucky to get a really great attending nurse. The hospital did not inform the patient about their condition, course of treatment and it was difficult for family to get in touch with doctors. Hospital staff break their own protocols and the response times before they can get to a patient are terrible. No one should have to wait hours to get something as basic as water, especially if the staff are the ones telling the patient that they need to stay hydrated and the patient cannot get up on their own! I'm not going to bother going into further detail because as you can see from what's been posted so far, many people have had horrible experiences at this hospital. I have already filed a formal complaint with this hospital and have yet to receive a formal response. It's appalling. People come here to feel safe and they deserve basic treatment and quality care. However she feels she is being treated well and that makes all the difference. She's 85 and can be very picky so if she's happy they must be doing a good job. read more

The few token Asian employees are nice but this is a Jewish hospital and it shows. Cliquey. Special treatment is given to Jewish upper class privately insured patients by Jewish staff. If you are on Medicaid, or a person of color, poor, or part of the lgbt community don't expect r be treated (even if you have a referral and it's something covered by your insurance). I'm surprised they don't get sued. They are almost as bad as NY Health and Hospitals in their shoddy treatment of patients. They could also benefit from diversity training. The allergy clinic here is phenomenal! I saw Dr. Mary Wong for a consultation and follow up visits and found her and staff to be very empathetic, patient, and experienced. They answered every question I had, didn't rush, and explained everything very well. Dr. Wong is very easy to talk, she listens very intently, asks a lot of questions to understand my predicament, was transparent with every step, and made me feel heard. My mother was sent to this hospital from the nursing home she was at for sciatica which rendered her immobile for that time. During her stay in the nursing home she developed covid and then she developed lung and heart issues. During her stay at Maimonides Medical Center, the times I visited her (I live in NJ) I witnessed her oxygen mask not plugged into the oxygen tank, twice her urine bag was overflowing into her bed soaking her back area, a nurse who snapped at her because she was moaning and asked her if she was in pain, and my 86 year old mother, who had a tube for drainage in her chest, an oxygen mask on and in physical pain, said no out of fear, and the nurse said then STOP YOUR MOANING (which was very faint in a sleepy state she was in anyway). What crossed my mind, was if this nurse is so bold to be cruel to my mother in front of me, what must she be doing when no family member is around. I also witnessed food trays left across the room on the window sill where my mother was not able to move to eat her meal. Families please beware, some of these nurses are overworked and take it out on their patients. Nursing requires patience, kindness and care and that's all we want for our loved ones, especially our elderly parents. Keep a keen eye on your family member in this hospital as I have witnessed neglect and cruelty from the staff at this hospital. My mother has since passed and my heart breaks when I think back at the end of her life experiences she had to endure at the hands of people who have no business calling themselves nurses. The physicians and nurses were great. The EKG tech literally stood next to me with an electrode in one hand, yapping away, not doing anything at the same time. No wonder ER is a bottleneck. This is solely for the billing department. They sent me a bill for the ER visit, but the insurance company didn't cover all, which is fine. But I have TWO insurance and they only submitted to one. I asked them to redo the claim so the two insurance companies can sort out the coverage. Instead, MMC just resubmitted the claim to the other insurance company. I called the first ins co and they said the claim submitted to them was canceled. WTF is the MMC doing? Now I owe even more money. What a shady greedy place. read more
