Which is unusual considering the reviews and their pricing and do I want to stay for 3 nights at $350 ish per night when I'm concerned about the mixed reviews without being able to see what I'm renting. Nevertheless, walking the halls, the rooms being service had their doors open and we could glance in as we passed by. The inn is grand, for sure. The library and fireplaces are very welcoming in atmosphere, decor and interesting artifacts and such. However, it is unlikely that we would choose to stay here for more than one night, the rooms were not "wowing", especially as compared to the grandeur of some of the public rooms. So we will give it a try, but for this trip, our VRBO is more than satisfactory.

The second was an egg soufflé with fresh vegetables one day, with rolls and apple butter bread. The second, a bread pudding with great sides. The bed was comfy... the carpet needs to go it's dirty and smells, the bathtub looked like someone had shat in it and smeared it down to the drain. The doors were peeling from something chewing on them. We bought shower shoes so we wouldn't have to have bare feet in the bathtub which turned out to be dirt on the bottom of it. We also wore them around the room because of how dirty the carpet was.The room was musty and dank feeling. It's a very outdated hotel and the pictures on Travelocity do not show the real deal. My key card stopped working and I had to get a new one the guy at the desk didn't ask for any id or anything other than the room number when he gave me new card, I'd never seen him before. Very scary! We didn't eat there because of the smell from the elevator every morning. Couldn't use the stairs with no light to avoid the elevator. Checkout was insane because of the reversals and holds on my card. The cleaning people were discussing what they do in peoples rooms when they go in to clean them, I don't think we were supposed to hear that conversation. I took pictures of what was in my suitcase before we let them in to clean.Overall we will never go back and would not recommend. We had the pool to ourselves each afternoon, it was spotless and just "warm" enough to be refreshing and restorative to our old bones. The daytime desk manager was delightful! She was engaging, and informative about the area, great resturant picks. They made a conference room available to store our bikes rather than having to lug them up to the room (but they were okay with that as well had we chosen to do so). But my partner and I just returned from a trip that included two nights at what I believe is now Abingdon's oldest motel, and we were quite charmed. The Alpine consists of about twenty rooms fanning out from a central office. The Swiss couple who built the place in the early Sixties named it for the landscape they had left, and indeed its hilltop perch near old U.S. 11 leading into the town of Abingdon makes it a very pretty site with views of Virginia's tallest mountains. The motel grounds are nicely landscaped, great for picnics or just watching the sun rise and set, and a haven for birds. Hard to believe that down the hill from the Alpine are the full complement of chain motels, eateries, gas stations, and Interstate 81 (north to Roanoke, south toward Knoxville, TN). We were aware that a superhighway exists down there, but the noise was not obtrusive. As others have said, the rooms are large and solid -- gave me a shock to see how standard motel rooms have shrunk since about 1980. Very clean rooms, solid, comfortable, modern. I have about two-and-a-half complaints about the Alpine that kept me from giving it five stars: (1) the phone in my room didn't work (this may not matter much to folks who use their cell for everything). (2) The lone soft-drink machine was broken . . . plenty of ice, but no sodas at all. I ran across a motel a few years ago with the same problem, and the office simply sold us soft drinks. (3) The "Continental" breakfast was meager, mostly coffee and mini-muffins. Even so, and at this price, the Alpine is still a "find"! For those who enjoy a full breakfast, a Cracker Barrel and a Huddle House are right on the way to I-81. It would be wrong of me not to add that Abingdon is home to the venerable Barter Theater, a legitimate performance venue that is the 'State Theater of Virginia.'
