This is not a food destination. The Castle has a limited menu, not offering cocktails or apps. We ordered a basic bottle of red, Apothic. Ciabatta bread was served, but there was no sign of bread plates. My husband ordered the salmon, and I ordered the braised short rib. Both were mid, not much flavor, and the table didn't even offer salt and pepper. When I requested it, it was graciously provided. Each meal came with an historical salad, circa Alexander the Great. When our meals came, they were warm, served with unimaginative vegetables. They did offer a purple carrot, a unicorn in Amsterdam. In a spectacular location like this, they could do a killing if their food was as unique and as inspired as their ambience. The service was solid. Everyone we encountered did their best to meet our needs. They were obviously kind people. At $140 for two with gratuity, this was steep for what we got.

Why would we drive 20 minutes in the rain and fog on St Patrick's and not eat at the lobby restaurant (this restaurant) where we were guests for two nights? Why walk out on our reservation? The reservation made with the front desk? Incompetence. Disrespect. Complete inability to remedy multiple screw ups. We were taken to our table with a cute little reserved placard on it. Unnecessary, but ok. There were three tables dining. Of dozens. As in the place was completely empty. Tables everywhere. Ours? Right next to the point-of-sale system against the bar. We asked to move. A dozen tables were available away from the bar. As it turns out, the significantly warmer side of the venue. Nope. The gentleman states that we can only sit on the kitchen entrance side close to the main door. In an empty restaurant. We sat there for about two minutes before it was clear we'd be cold from the main door draft and even more frustrated by the loud yelling in the kitchen. The ice crunching from the bartender was the only thing that made it comical. Seriously, within two minutes my neck was stiff from the cold at the second table. My wife's feet, in boots, we're getting chilled. I'd be furious if this wasn't a first world thing. It is a first world thing. But if you're looking for a nice dining experience in an empty restaurant and the staff wants to sit your reservation made, suite (just a bigger room) staying butt in front of the kitchen or POS system rather than accept that the guest isn't satisfied with the hospitality... The owners greeted us warmly and warmed up our cottage before we got there. The cottage is a very simple layout, full kitchen and ours was the Ruska which has 3 bedrooms. Even though we were there in December they did not have enough snow for cross country skiing or snow shoeing. It was a bummer but the owners let us rent our sleds and ice skates at no charge because of mother natures inability to cooperate during the holiday week. They also set up a nordic bowling game on the frozen lake which was fun. We were also able to take a hike on the snowshoe trail which also appealed to us. The negatives were that their food if you chose to eat at their little restaurant was terrible (bring your own food!) and that when you do cook you have to make sure to clean up after yourself (no house keeping) It was a nice get away with the hubby however I want our next winter escape to be a little more pampered.

I got a room on the second floor which had a view of a snow topped forested area nearby. I got a king room which was appointed with a king bed, desk area, a couple drawers for clothing and a small closet to hang a few things. It also had a small refrigerator and microwave. So everything you need for a comfortable stay. The clerk who checked me in was friendly enough and everyone I encountered was as well. My room was clean and the bed was comfy. Get to it!
