Ms T and I went to El Guero to find some Mexican ingrediants and were extremely impressed with both the supermarket and the taqueria attached. The market is large and clean with a huge selection of pretty much anything you could want in the way of general groceries and especially Mexican ingredients. After shopping for groceries, we had lunch at the taqueria. My experience with these little eateries attached to markets is that they are pretty good. El Guero is very good indeed. Ms T had a couple of very good tacos; carne asada and pollo. The carne asada was the best, grilled freshly, well seasoned and with nice grill crust. The pollo is stewed chicken breast (more of a guisado de pollo) with some seasonings and onion, so it was nice and moist with decent flavor. I would prefer pollo asado. I had an excellent torta de chorizo. It was huge and I only ate half. It had all of the usual ingredients and was served on toasted telera. It was delicious. So the following Sunday we went for lunch again hoping for some posole, which they did not have. What we had, however, could not have been better. Andrew T was with us and had enchiladas stuffed with guisado de puerco rojo. These were very good, from the garlicky, richly flavored red chile sauce to the juicy tender pork. Ms T had chilaquiles verdes with two eggs over easy. Again this is home cooking style food. The salsa verde was not as tart as the typical tomatillo based sauce but was very rich and flavored well with green chile. It was a little thick and not watery as it is when they just dump it out of a can. Again, excellent. I had huevos con chorizo and I received a very good sized portion, well flavored with chorizo that is made on the premises. I ate them with fresh soft tortillas that, if not house made, certainly have that home made feel. Everything was really very good. The beans were creamy and simple. The rice was also simple with a nice level of garlic. I love the toasted red chile sauce that they bring as a garnish. It is a bit of a surprise at first when you discover that it has little salt and no vineger or lime. But the toasted red chile flavor is wonderful and I put it to good use on the huevos. Servings were large and the cost is low. The dining area is clean and bright. The counter ladies where you order are very nice and helpful. The selection of meats for your tacos, tortas, enchilladas, etc is extensive. When we are back here visiting, we will have to make this a routine stop for Sunday lunch. This is a strong four stars. February 2015 - I am adding a star. I love eating here and we make it a must-do whenever we are visiting. Most recently I have been getting the desayuno do machaca; scrambled eggs and shredded dried beef. Cover it with their delicious red sauce in the squirt bottle and you have a great breakfast. Andrew T is devoted to the deshebrado; shredded beef in a rich red sauce. He orders it normally as the meat of choice in enchiladas. Most recently Ms T selected chilaquiles (rojo) with a fried egg on top. The red sauce is so rich, it is almost a mole. My advice is, skip the typical Mexican restaurants and eat here. read more

I love this store! I've been going here for years and it never disappoints. Being Latin, I crave my latin food, food you cant get at Jewel or Meijer. They have a huge selection of latin foods and brands. Their deli section has hot prepared items that are very good. I go here for my latin foods and the meats. They have meats that are already seasoned and ready to cook. The butcher will cut your meats any way you like and they quality isnt bad. The one thing I dont like to purchase here are vegetables or fruits. I feel like they arent fresh. I'd rather go to Meijer for that. The cashiers are fast and efficient and the rest of the staff is friendly. You can spot the owners here on occasion. I started out going to the one on Galena St but the one on Farnsworth is much better. Try them out for their huge selection of Latin foods and their meats. read more

This place rocks. Plain and simple. Everything here is great from their attached taqueria, to the ice cream place on the other side of the store and everything in between. Produce is amazing and incredible cheap, their meat department is the same. A favorite of ours is their pre-made chicken fajita meat mix which always feels way cheaper than it should be for how much you get. Also, if you're new to Mexican grocery stores, get some oaxaca cheese. It's in the coolers in between the meat counter and the pre-packed meat on the left side of the store. It's basically Mexican string cheese, but way cheaper and super fresh. Just beware, this is very much a Mexican, Mexican grocery store. Signage is primarily in Spanish, few people speak English, and if you're looking for ingredients for white people food, you're likely going to find a limited selection here. I wouldn't think this would be a surprise to anyone, but other Yelp reviews for this place has made me think otherwise. That being said, as long as you go there with an "open mind and an empty stomach," you won't leave disappointed. We've made a habit of always buying something we have no idea what it is when we go. This hasn't burnt us yet, and is how we discovered the whole oaxaca cheese thing! Live a little! read more

I have not done any grocery shopping at El Guero, but reading the reviews about the tacqueria inside the store is what brought us in. The choriqueso tacos are the best here! My husband said the chorizo was the best of all the tacquerias in the land, and we've been making the rounds since moving to Aurora, so I trust his judgement on this one. The Al Pastor flavorful and more spicy than some, which I prefer to the sweeter pork at some places. Chips and salsa are not complimentary, but I'm not going to rip El Guero for that. Free chips and salsa seems to be a 50/50 thing, you just don't know until you walk in, but if it's good, I have no problem paying for it. However, the salsa here is absolutely awful! I would not call this salsa, it was watery tomato with some spices. Our chips looked like we just dipped them in the watery run-off of what was once salsa. Salsa fail. I did not particularly like El Guero's red or green sauce either. Red sauces usually don't entice me anyway, but I found the green sauce to be much too spicy for my palette. I did use some of it, but I had to be ridiculously careful. Although my husband doused his tacos in the green sauce, so I'd say that if you're even moderately sensitive to spice, you probably won't like the sauces. Tacos are $2 each, slightly more than other tacquerias, and I was disappointed that they did not have the Chile Relleno tacos. I'm not sure if they were out of it, or no longer serve them, due to the slight language barrier. The service was fine though, they were polite and patient while we decided what to order. The language barrier isn't a big deal, the menu is in Spanish and English. This place is clean, with lots of tables, including outdoor seating. The highlight was the chorizo! As far as the supermarket is concerned, it's clean and competitive, with great selections of fruits and vegetables; I've heard that the taqueria is pretty good but I can't really attest to anything about that, being that I'm not much of a taco person. They just recently opened up an ice cream shop in there and that's really what this review is about. For anyone who hasn't had Mexican-style ice cream, please let me say a few things. First, let me say that Mexican ice cream can be broken down into two basic types: those made with cream (de leche) and those made with juices, purees and water (de agua), like sorbet; the cream based type is more closely related to the gelato than to American ice cream--which contains less butterfat and more air--and so is very rich and creamy; the juice-and-water type is deceivingly creamier than one might expect, and INCREDIBLY refreshing. I can't say I love one kind more than the other, it's just all depending on whether I want something rich and creamy or something lighter and fresher. Secondly, the flavors are much better and more natural than what you'll find in the ice cream aisle at the supermarket or at the counter at Baskin Robins; and lastly, the prices are awesome: a generous serving of ice cream for less than two bucks?? Friendly service and you're not that far from me?? Awesome. It's not huge but they have a good selection of ice cream and paletas (Mexican ice cream bars which can also be 'de leche' or 'de agua'), and they freely offer samples of all the interesting and unique flavors they carry. One of my favorites is called 'chongo samorano' but please don't ask me what it is, I'm not even sure if I spelled it correctly; when I asked my mom she spent several minutes explaining what it is and I'm still not sure exactly what it is that I'm sticking in my mouth, but it's really darn good. They don't always carry the same flavors, but they typically have pecan, strawberry, pineapple, coconut, pistachio, etc., but also pine nut, mango, lime, cheesecake, strawberries and cream, pina colada, and even tequila! I really hope that people who love ice cream but who've never had Mexican ice cream are willing to give it a shot, hell, I'll take you! I have to say that the ice cream here isn't as great as the one at my favorite ice cream shop, but it's really close on a lot of things, and there's a few things between which I would not be able to tell the difference. The flavors aren't as intense and the ice cream isn't as rich and as heavy, but they're still miles ahead of store brands, Baskin Robbins, or Dairy Queen. The only suggestion I would make is one I would make at the other great Mexican ice cream shop, La Paleteria de La Luna Michoacán--or freaking something like that--please devise a system for organizing the crowds that form. This has basically replaced our usual trips to Los Comales nearby. It's slightly different cuisine (less tacos, more dinner plates) but I think a little better. It's also better eaten for brunch than it is for dinner, honestly. Maybe because things haven't been cooking all day? Not that it's bad in the evening, but it's super delicious in the morning. I usually get enchiladas, and you can get them with any of a variety of fillings, all the usual suspects are present. Their red sauce is a tiny bit sweet, but has good chile flavor, and their green is spicy and tart, which is definitely playing to what I like. Rice and beans are good - with beans creamy and rice...well, normal. And the price is pretty reasonable as well. My parents like this place as well - we'll definitely be back. Not that we have exhausted all our options yet, but this is probably the best home style Mexican I've found so far, and it's close to come. read more

This place is a two-in-one. The taqueria on the north end has a small modern fast-food seating area and nice assortment of hot entrees. The chilaquiles were delicious - a plate of chips smothered in sour-spicy green sauce (ask for red or green) and melted cheese with two poached eggs on top. A friend liked her picadilla de res taco - crumbly ground beef with tomato and spices on a freshly browned corn tortilla. There is outdoor seating next to the parking lot. The large main grocery store has a wide selection of fresh produce including all the chiles, nopales, agave leaves and other Latin cooking items. There's a large counter with fluffy piles of umpteen kinds of sour cream. We found really good sliced muenster cheese at half the price of other places. This place is huge and seems to have a lot of anything Mexican or Latin American. I was here on a mission looking for spicy pickled vegetables. I was able to find cans of the pickled carrots and el salvadorian pickled cole slaw. Prices were reasonable and everything was very organized and clean. Love this place! read more

Some of the cashiers can be a little more black friendly. Most black people dont bite. Lol... I usually go to the grocery store on Indian Trail Rd in Aurora, but i was in the area, and i wanted to see what they had at this store. This store is great they carry many things that i like. When i was finish shopping the young skinny hispanic cashier in line one had the weirdest attitude. I jumped right out of her line, and jumped in the next cashier line and the other cashier was decent. El Guero! Another great Aurora taqueria!!! I'm confused as to why Taco Bell even exists around here... El Guero is really two places in one: a taqueria (where I ate) and a grocery store (which I'm gonna need to come back to and check out more thoroughly - it looked great!) The taqueria is in a fairly large, high-ceiling room with plenty of seating. The menu is mostly in Spanish, but there was one employee who spoke English. He was super-helpful in aiding communication between the young lady behind the counter and myself. The food? Great! I had my usual "first-time" meal for Mexican restaurants (taco dinner plate! Yay!) The pastor and steak tacos were very good, and my favorite was the chicken - I could've eaten several more of those! Add a fantastic-tasting side of rice and beans, and a glass bottle of Mango Jarritos (a Mexican soda that I hope you've had before) and I was HAPPY! I can't wait to return and sample some of the other delicious looking food I saw... The tables/booths were very clean, the staff was very friendly and patient, and the food was great! On the right side of the grocer and pretty separate from it as well. Very new and easily the cleanest-looking interior I ever seen as the many grocery stores that contain taquerias that I encounter are rather rough-looking. Prices were really cheap as my 3 tacos and burrito came to $10. No complaints on the tacos, were a little big, when compared with other non-gringo establishments. My carnita burrito was solid, very filling and heavy, but didn't enjoy it as much the tacos. Both items tasted like they added some diced pepper to the filling as well. I'd prefer this place over the 3 other Mexican eateries on the Farnsworth/Sheffer corridor. read more

The reviews seemed decent so decided to check this place out yesterday. We just moved to the area and were looking for a Mexican grocery store. The store has good prices especially in the meat department. We got dinner at the taqueria attached to the store. Dinner was good. Got the taco dinner. I went to the bathroom and saw a cockroach on the wall! It freaked me out because I know there isn't just ONE of those around! Also when we left the store there was a mouse roaming around by the exit doors! I am NEVER going back to this place. So gross! read more
