Most disorganized management of a birthday party I have ever experienced. Too bad as the concept is a good one.

All my questions and concerns have been addressed almost immediately, via email or phone call. My youngest has several food allergies, severe (anaphylaxis) the staff is fully trained, they are an inclusive camp, meaning she can eat and participate in EVERY activity. This is extremely important for any kid of any age, to feel included and part of everything and something. I highly highly recommend this. Thank you to Camp Wekeela for making this a truly memorable summer for my girls. They will be back next year!

Wekeela also is great because you can extend your time there easily, and if you hate it (which I really doubt you will) you will probably be allowed to un-extend. Last summer I went to camp for four weeks, and even in my second year I was still making friends and looking forward to meeting new people! I can't say enough good things about Wekeela. On the last day I was crying my eyes out from dinner to the end of campfire and after camp ended every night I facetimed my friends and became extremely camp sick. I love camp so much that I am going for seven weeks next summer; and considering my past experiences with camps, that's a big deal. If you want a carefree, fun, socialized summer, come to camp Wekeela. Trust me.

Maria (who runs the center) just flat out cares. She is incredibly thorough in how she and her team look over the kids. She doesn't look at this as "babysitting", she looks at this as a proper school. She highly emphasizes education and constant broadening of the childrens' horizons, and she knows all of the kids in the school very well. Even more, as our son was starting their program she actively encouraged us to stop by with him after hours multiple times, to acclimate him to the environment before starting up. She did everything she could to make sure our child had the smoothest startup possible, and as a result he adjusted really quickly all things considered. I cannot recommend this school enough, it has been an entirely positive experience and I feel my child is being cared for so much more than at some of the local franchised daycares we visited. (Also regarding cost, interestingly they're on the better value side of tuition rates for the area)

I cannot say anything more than how happy and grateful we are to have found Ms. Maria (director of…read morethis school) and the school. My 2-yr old son was in another daycare for a few months and he was bitten by the first month. And then he started biting other kids the following months while that other biting kid was separated to another room. We tried our best to stop him, engaged a speech/behavioral therapist counseling to see what was wrong with him. The therapist said there was nothing wrong with him and was surprised to hear him biting other kids at daycare. The daycare basically gave us a two week warning, that if this happens again, we would need to find a babysitter. We were terrified! By then we were starting doing research around new schools. We visited this school, where Ms. Maria said "please never schedule to go visit the school. Come visit us at any time!!" We did visit unannounced, and Ms. Maria toured us around while hearing our story about biting. She was disheartened to hear about the biting and told us to "never let others label your child." I basically bursted out crying at this and Ms. Maria assured that that will not happen at her school, because she had other kids from his then current daycare have exactly the same issue and came to her school and the kid never bit others any more. There were other kids from other daycare also came because they were unhappy, and she said they were all doing great. I could kind of believe it because the school was so big and open inside, and they basically rotated the rooms throughout the day so the kids get different themed rooms throughout the day. The kids were limited in numbers, the teachers were happy and engaged at all times, and there were intellectual stimulations all around. Like one room was filled with puzzles and trucks, the next room was about music, and then the kitchen, etc. we were so impressed and felt supported. We took her offer to try out a week. As soon as he started going to this school, he never bit any kid or even attempted to do so. They told us he is having a great time and that he is smiling all day. It's been a few weeks now and he is still enjoying the school and he is much, much happier now than ever. I initially didn't look at this place because it was farther than other schools close to our house. But I have heard great stories on a private facebook group of our neighborhood and wanted to just check out how it is. And now I am blown away by the amount of personal, family like environment that the school carries. I am so so glad I got to know Ms. Maria and the crew. I did get to meet one of the other moms who had the same situation and they had exactly the same positive experience at this school for many months now. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a nurturing, warm place for your kids to enjoy spending their time at the daycare. It is a hidden gem. They just recently opened a new building and my son is in it. I believe they have more openings because of thay

The bus is air-conditioned with a loving and trained bus counselor. The counselor facilitates activities on the bus. Our son loves going to camp. He was skeptical before he went for the first day. He told the counselor, "I didn't want to come but I changed my mind." He was hooked when he arrived. The staff are thoroughly trained. This is the only camp (that I know of) that has a mandatory week-long training. The staff are compassionate, knowledgeable, patient and flexible. Nature Place Day Camp is intuitive and thoughtful to each camper, rather than prescribing a "one size fits all," schedule driven, rules based mentality. The campers are encouraged to be curious. Campers exude confidence through this curiosity. The camp has daily swimming in their beautiful "pond" (a tasteful pool that looks like a pond). My son is learning how to swim! In the past, we have invested our time and money in swim lessons ad nauseam with no results. He did not even want to go into the pool. Now that he is learning at nature place day camp, he has made more progress at camp than he has in years of lessons. The camp is teaching respect for nature and thoughtfulness. The camp values the environment and demonstrates an authentic love for the ecosystem to the campers. The camp also encourages mindfulness and thoughtfulness in silence and quiet meditative peace (instead of other camp's whistles and bells). The correspondence with the camp is wonderful. We can always reach someone at the camp whenever we need to talk about issues related to camp (e.g. different pick ups, meals etc). The camp sends out beautiful weekly updates which lays out what happened the prior week. The camp is a lovely place. My only regret is that I did not get to go here as a child. My husband and I are so fortunate to know that our son is getting a well-rounded, nurturing, safe and nourishing experience.

Not yet a 55 location phenomenon like its musical counterpart, One River is a growing franchise on the East Coast. The modern and upscale facility in Allendale offers a variety of children's, tween, teen and adult art classes that are taught by a young and hip faculty. The staff is helpful and informative. Our tween enjoyed the digital art classes he tried and the "teen shuffle" class he now enjoys -- which teaches in multiple media and fairly large groups. That said, I'm not sure the curriculum is on the same level as some traditional art schools we've experienced in the past -- that are usually focused on more one on one training. However the large number of choices, an energetic faculty and flexibility to switch between programs and instructors on short notice is a plus. This place is pricey but classes are about market for the area and the service offered. Depending on your expectations and the skill set you bring to the program -- One River might be a good choice. Top Tip: Take a trial class or two before you commit. The rolling admissions policy requires that you commit for at least 4 classes in a 30 day period -- and that you give a 30 days notice of cancellation.

As an OPWDD family, coordinating approvals, support brokerage, and Fiscal Intermediary (FI) requirements can already be extremely time-consuming, and navigating those systems often causes significant delays that are outside a family's control. I was hoping for greater flexibility and collaboration during the enrollment process, but instead felt that the process became increasingly difficult and ultimately decided not to move forward. I appreciate the importance of ensuring campers are a good fit, but I believe families navigating complex disability-service systems would benefit from more understanding, clear communication, and flexibility throughout the admissions process.
