One thing to note is that this gym sets it's courses by tape color, NOT by hold color. If you climb at a gym were a route is set using all the same color holds, it will take some getting used to. Also, a lot of the routes overlap AND use the same holds. So, one hold can have 3-4 different colored tape on it. There were times, while climbing, that it was hard to see which holds you could put your feet on because of the placement of the tape. The tape wasn't always visible from above the hold. This makes climbing a route a lot more complicated (and honestly, really annoying). If you are used to climbing at a gym that sets routes with colored tape, then you will be fine and like it here. If you are used to color coded holds, then it may be frustrating. The building itself isn't very tall so the climbing walls are only moderate height. The walls go right up to the ceiling. There are windows in the ceiling but they are yellowish glass which don't let any light in. This all combines to make the space feel cramped. Even though there are actually a lot of top rope routes, and 2 bouldering walls, the space feels small. I am guessing that if the windows were swapped out it would then brighten up the space and make it feel larger. read more

Used our groupon for a belay certification and got to climb for a day! Didn't realize how fun this would be and it's definitely a killer workout. I have been to Gravity Vault for a belay certification course and a children's birthday party. They do both very well. The instructors may be young but they know what they are doing and they have the patience for it. They are also very good in encouraging the children to climb if they may be hesitant to do so at first. I have been on a weekday afternoon and weekday evening and both times were not crowded. Not sure what the weekend crowd looks like. read more

Great routes. Very impressed. Only thing that was a turn off was kids running around under your route. Twice I was coming down had to be braked to have the kid skat so I (and them) go away unscathed. No real changing rooms. Two single fairly clean bathrooms. Sofas to lounge in in the rest area. Super impressive grip practice wall. read more

Pros: - Loads of climbing walls - Patient and knowledgable staff - Rock gym with climbing-related equipment - Auto-belays Cons: - Smells kinda like feet I came to the Gravity Vault with Yelp's Fit Club and had an amazing time! Our instructors were funny, patient, instructed us clearly, and made sure everyone was safe. We took their belay certification course and were "shown the ropes" (Get it? It's a pun, because it's a climbing gym, and you belay using ropes? No? Okay.) for two hours, learning how to tie a few different knots, how to use the harnesses and carabiners, how to fit climbing shoes, terminology to use, and what all the tape markers on the rock walls are for. They also showed us the other climbing equipment, like in the climbing gym, which had lots of cool, rock climbing-related equipment that you wouldn't find in a conventional gym. The great thing was, after getting the certification, we were left to climb for the rest of the night! A day pass is pretty affordable and I would definitely come back. It was a great workout and a lot of fun, especially for people who are competitive with themselves - it's fun to try the same wall more than once and see if you can climb it faster! Everything was as clean as you'd expect it to be. My hands felt pretty grimy after, but that's to be expected seeing as how people's hands and feet are all over the rock walls all day. For an indoor climbing gym this place rocks! They have so many options for top rope and for bouldering. Even when there are crowds of kids it's pretty easy to avoid them by just going to the other side of the main rock wall. The bouldering is separated into a few sections. As a beginner there are a lot of options for climbing and improving on my endurance and skill. I love that they switch up the walls frequently enough that it doesn't get boring. For first timers they have a bunch of classes and options to get belay certified. They also offer someone that can belay you for an hour or so if you are not certified and it's not too expensive. Staff has always been friendly and helpful. read more

I blame Arnold Schwarzenegger for my obsession with rock climbing. Or was it the movie, "Descent"?! Either way, I'm obsessed and thankfully indoor climbing is much safer (no over sized rodent bat hybrids that kill humans here!). Great climbing walls. The colored tape is well maintained so you can easily see what route you're taking. Lots of bouldering and top rope climbing walls. They also have single person belaying which is the first I've seen at a gym, which is great if you're climbing alone or waiting on friends. (aka when all your friends are too afraid to join you) Staff is friendly and polite. Will definitely be coming back! read more

So I came to the Gravity Vault for their Monday BOGO special. After checking in up front and signing the usual waivers, we rented our climbing shoes and some chalk. Unless you have belay certification or you pay the extra to have the staff belay for you, you're gonna have to stick to the shorter bouldering walls. That's fine, there are a large number of challenging problems set up for you to solve, color coded by difficulty. And it's more thrilling to climb knowing you can fall (onto a crash pad from a relatively low height). Unfortunately, they have no locker rooms, just shelves by the rest area where you can keep your stuff (unwatched and unsecured) while you climb. But the staff and clientele were friendly, and there were no issues. Would definitely go again. read more

After a great climbing experience at the Gravity Vault in Chatham, I expected nothing less from this branch. It certainly has met my expectations. It was clean, less-crowded, and most importantly - challenging. Moreover, it's closer to my home than the Chatham location. There are two separate bouldering areas where crash pads in nice conditions were sufficiently laid out. The routes were nicely scattered and posed many challenges for me. Although bouldering here was enjoyable, I came for the top-roping. Maybe I am too accustomed to the shorter walls, I found myself resting along the way while warming up on a 5.8. Luckily, after warming up for a while, I was able to get on and complete some of the most challenging 5.10 routes I have ever encountered. That sure was awesome. The only upgrade I would recommend for this place is to add some changing rooms as the bathroom is not necessarily the best place to change. read more

BLUF: Decent rock climbing gym. Was here recently for a CCS climbing competition and it was quite cramped for the comp but has adequate facilities for a regular weekend visit. Gravity Vault has a large bouldering wall bordering one of its walls and rope routes throughout the gym. Additionally, they have a hang board and campus board in one corner with a couple machines to warm up with. The problems were great and varied in difficulty. The over hang on part of the wall was a fun challenge. The only downside was that gravity vault was quite cramped for this comp. There wasn't great ventilation leading to stuffiness and quite an odor. Other than that, I'd be very happy to return. Thanks for hosting the comp guys. read more

I brought a group of 18 tweens for a travel camp trip. That is a tough age to keep entertained, but the staff did a great job. From the second we got there, to the second we left they were accommodating and kind. When the kids got restless, they created games and activities for them and kept the fun going. We had Caitlyn, Hassan, Kylee, and Chris as our staff, and they were AMAZING! Nancy, the manager on duty, was also incredibly kind and helpful! I had never climbed before and tried their hour long class on a date. I was hooked instantly. I've been climbing there now for over a year and really love it. The staff is cool and while it's more expensive than a regular gym it's worth it to me because I enjoy going there. The routes change frequently and while their difficulty seems to vary depending I who sets them they're always fun and as challenging as you can handle. read more

I went on Saturday to boulder for the first time ever, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. In order to go on the larger walls you need to pay to have an instructor with you unless you get certified, but I enjoyed the boulder walls which you have no harness. The walls are color coded by difficulty and they do get pretty challenging. Apparently they change up the wall courses too which is nice. I work out 6 days a week and let me tell you after 4 hours of being here, my forearms and back were sore for the next two days lol. I am planning in buying a 10 punch pass which makes is cheaper per day, instead of 22 with equipment it ends up like 18 or 17. On Mondays it is BOGO!!!! read more

Great place for a birthday party. My son just turned 10 so he is a little old for the "Bounce U" parties. We decided to have his party at the Gravity vault. They were very well organized and the staff was very attentive and competent. The kids had a great time and felt totally safe the whole time. Even the kids who have never climbed before were climbing to the top by the end of the 1 1/2 hour session. We are definitely going back to climb on our own. read more

Stopped by here with 2 climbing friends after a rainout in the Gunks. Really liked this gym! - Lots of long routes with quite high walls. - You can lead climb nearly every wall. - Drag rope is provided if you ask. - Think I remember then providing GriGris and biners at the belay stations. - Lots of parking outside. The following were a few items I was unhappy with... - Closes at 6PM on Sundays. - Found the routes somewhat easier than they were rated. Lots of the holds were easier. - There was a birthday party but the kids didnt really do any climbing. They played tug of war and swung from a rope between crash pads. The other times, they were running around and tripping over ropes in use. Definitely a good spot for climbing. If NJRG wasnt closer for me, I would probably be coming here. read more

Was really looking forward to a fun night out. But the staff was obnoxious and unpleasant. Additionally, their ropes don't have carabiners on both ends, so if you don't know how to knot the ropes correctly- each time you want to start climbing- then you can only go on the little wall that doesn't require ropes. I've only been to 2 other rock gyms & i'm no expert but I like it. Can't speak for the top roping since I only bouldered but I thought problems were challenging. The tape was falling off & looked sloppy but they were having a comp coming up that weekend so I'm guessing they were waiting to replace/repair. I like that there is a lot more floor space b/n the boulders & walls so it doesn't feel as claustrophobic as another gym I've visited. I don't think there are many options in NNJ so even if you don't like this place it might be the only spot for you. read more

Had a rocking time here with two friend who are avid rock climbers! My fiance and I came here for the first time (and first time rock climbing ever) and we were so impressed with the quality of their equipment and cleanliness of the establishment. The staff here is very young, knowledgeable, but not as friendly as you would expect. However, we didn't work with them as our friends were belay certified. The pricing is quite reasonable too and bonus for their ladies night special. We're excited to check out the Chatham location soon! read more

Bad for new climbers. I made the mistake of bringing my friends here for their first time climbing. They had one auto belay with easier climbs that eight people were waiting for besides me and my friends, so we only got two climbs in during our two and a half hours there. Then we were informed that we weren't supposed to be using the auto belay without paying for the certification course, and we only should have been bouldering. I've been climbing at other gyms for a year and none of them make you pay to become certified in auto belay. The mat system under bouldering was ridiculous, it looked like someone threw down a few mats haphazardly and was totally unsafe. read more

Staff is very rude and unhelpful. Knot tying classes are 2 hours long and only occur once a day. If you wish, u can rent a staff member for a fee but appt times are limited. You are not allowed to practice your knots before the test. And so therefore you are only left with the option of climbing the 10 ft baby wall. Gravity Vault is a bit far from me but was recommended by a friend. The place is hidden behind a baseball facility which makes it a treasure to find. Both belaying and bouldering are offered here with thick crash pads. The routes are changed every few months so there's always a challenge. Prices are affordable and some nights are discounted which make it a plus. The staff and climbers are helpful and courteous so climbing is enjoyable here. There have been very few instances where I had to wait to climb because it was so packed. So I would recommend going in the mornings if you can. read more

Just took the 2 hour belay certification course yesterday with my girlfriend. Neither of us has rock climbed before. The staff is very friendly and explained everything to us. The instructor was great and taught us everything we needed to know. My girlfriend has a minor fear of heights and the instructor was very helpful with that. After she couldnt go up the first wall he took us to the kiddie wall and eventually worked up her confidence to climb to the top of the adult wall. She was extremely happy which of course meant I was happy, haha. We were never rushed and felt very comfortable climbing the walls. We both will definitely be back to climb walls in the future. read more

I brought my girlfriend here for our second date and I decided to use her account to write a review. First of all the place is big and was able to accommodate a large amount of people. We were greeted at the door by some little scrawny dude who politely asked us if we knew how to rock climb. Of course we lied and he was cool about it. He showed us how to tie the knot and work the belay, but he warned us that he was not supposed to do that without charging us extra $. Right when we were getting the hang of it some annoying girl employee chastised him like she's the queen of rock climbing. She then told on him like a third grader and we were forced to pay the 30$ each for some lame thing called bouldering. We paid to realize that climbing rocks was a sport only meant for the most social and popular members of society. In order to impress my not yet girlfriend of time I tried the grip strength test and got twice as high as the ten year veteran right next to me. He was a cool dude though and overall the place was fun. Except for that loser tattle tale working there. read more
