Galco's will forever hold a special place in my heart…read more This is the OG grocery store we would walk to in the early 80"s. When they had penny candy machines, a big taxidermy deer head and the kindest owner. He once gave me and my sibling a big paper lunch bag full of candies! I love seeing the original check out stand, the little upper office where the owner would stand and the old fridge area where it once held fruits and veggies now old school candy bars. If you grew up in highland park in the 80s, this was the local market. How I miss those days! Highland Park is so different now! Btw Galco's makes some of the best sandwiches! Also if anyone knows where to get Stoney Tangawizi please let me know!

It has such a selection of candy from your childhood, and for kids, random unique gifts to keep them busy. but yesterday...all that flew out the window. I approached the sandwich counter and asked the person working (an angry woman apparently) what her favorite sandwiches are. After she took a minute to complain about how she had been making sandwiches all day and her brain is fried and she didn't really have any recommendations for me (and was seemingly annoyed at me even asking) she looked at the clock and advised that I was 2 minutes too late to order a hot sandwich. literally the 2 minutes she took to complain about her job cost me the sandwich. now, if it was my shop and a nice family came in and asked me my opinion on something and I took a minute or two to say the things that she said I would give them a sandwich and make that sandwich be the last sandwich of the day, but instead apparently my money wasn't green enough for her. She shut it down and two minutes later was out the door. she was rude, and honestly it just seemed that she didn't give an F. Today I called the store to speak with the owner and the person who answered the phone gave me the runaround. it was clear that either the workers didn't want to connect me with the owner or the owner doesn't want to hear the complaint. this place has gone downhill.

In an age where I keep running into…read moreincompetence at other companies, small and large, good products and prompt delivery alone would be enough to earn 5 stars. However, in my book, Jenkins Jellies deserves 6 stars! Here is why: details count and kindness matters. A portion of my order was products in glass jars; these were carefully wrapped and padded for shipping. This was in addition to packing peanuts which I immediately recognized as the biodegradable kind and appreciated the company's eco-friendly choice. And the little added friendly note genuinely made my day. Now for the products. I have bought the jellies multiple times to give as gifts, and each time the recipient loves them. Most recently I bought a jar to accompany a fruit and cheese platter at a small gathering with some friends, and it went over great. If I am being honest, I have never been a jam or jelly person which is why I gift them...but if there is some open in the fridge or out on a cheese platter I confess I find myself nibbling on snacks with Jenkins Jelly again and again. (For me personally, I think it is the varying heat levels nicely blended into the flavors that brings an amount of savoriness which appeals to my palate.) I also ordered a few other products Jenkins Jellies now carries. Although I am still working my way through them I will say that the Old School Brand Classic Pound Cake Mix was simple to make and went over well in my family--there was even a little debate over which one of us would get the last piece. I no doubt will be ordering from Jenkins Jellies again!

Buy three and get a discount on the final price! Well, I was all over that. I bought two small and one large jars for only $19. Thinking back, I should have bought more because they are good for a long time. I found out today that she was completely sold out of this particular jelly! These go by super fast. I know I should buy the other jellies out there that she makes but I can't compare anything else to this specific jelly. I've tried other jalepeno/pepper jellies before and it's just not the same! This is one of the main reasons why I even bother going to Unique LA, is to sample her jellies and buy them by the bunch. Honestly, I could eat this every day. I wonder if she'll make it in Costco sized jars? I would totally get it if she did...

Rodriguez Market makes some pretty awesome tortas that can seriously make Jared's foot-long go limp. Yes, 4 stars for their tortas alone! For $5, you get a choice of turkey, roast beef, ham, veggies, pastrami, or tuna served in a warmly toasted Mexican cibatta-esque bread. I've had the turkey, ham, and pastrami ......and, all were packed with onions, bell peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos, avocado, and white crumbly cheese. They're pretty big and conveniently cut into twos in case you want to go halfers with someone. I love how they are not greasy like a burger but not too boring like most $5 sandwiches. So whenever I feel like having something in-between, I get a torta here. Friendly, family-run business. Go toward the back of the store and you'll be greeted by a cute senorita.

It seems to have finally become readily apparent that two local yokel dueling mini-markets across…read morethe street from each other selling virtually the same stuff is not exactly the best business model for success on Easy Street. It is indeed true that we're playing in a dog-eat-dog, winner-takes-all, zero-sum-game world, accentuated by the economic harshitude of this spartan, crater-pocked economy. So, as the Sunrise Market and it's cross-the-street opponent the Rodriguez Market dizzily spiral into lock-down knock-down deathgrip, one becomes not only a front-row spectator, but also an active (albeit unwittingly so) participant in determining the fate of these two businesses. This groggy morning, I stumbled into the smaller, more 'homey' of the two, if you will, the Rodriguez Market, where I've established some semblance of 'brand loyalty' and rapport with the friendly staff (of two) over the past 5+ yrs. I won't wax rhapsodic about the tasty tortas you can procure at the counter in back, as Jennifer Y. has already masterfully detailed THAT. I will let you know that they have some excellent produce at decent prices for a Ma and Pa establishment....case in point: 3 Ginormous Beefsteaky Tomatoes 2 Avg Size Aguacates 1 Bunch of Bananas 1 Sprig of Cilantro 1 Tasty Yogurt Drink ___________________ $7.50 including tax... Not bad, not bad a'tall... What IS bad is business, REALLY bad. Most shelves are at least half empty, even in the produce nook...so don't come here expecting to fulfill all of your shopping needs. But what this place NEEDS is business, now more than ever. The usually sunny Senora behind the counter was markedly moribund--I tried to cheer her up but couldn't avert my eyes from the barely stocked shelves...I must say I just couldn't look away, which certainly didn't help bring her any sunny cheer. I have NEVER seen the joint like this. Well, come ye from near and passin' on thru, to support this friendly establishment. It seems that even the drunks and loitering louts are taking a holiday from the place, so you can zip in and out uncontested. I think I'll go back soon for another one of those delicious tortas. Then I'll mozy on over to the Sunrise Market to see if their fortunes are faring any better.... Maybe one of these places will finally raise the white flag, so that we can finally get some kinda coffeehouse or bakery or SOMETHING to brighten the moribund mood over on the corner of Ave 43 and Griffin. One can dream... DONE.
