I really love Cookbook, I truly do, but I just had such a dehumanizing and upsetting experience that I do feel like I have to say something. On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, around 6pm, I was waiting in line to purchase a few things at Cookbook. The customer in front of me put her basket on the register and then went to grab a few more items. No worries. I moved toward the register to pay for my purchase while that customer grabbed her other items, but I was intercepted by another customer, a man (who apparently didn't see me waiting?) who cut in front of me to buy a loaf of bread. The cashier let him do so, cashing him out and answering his questions about some other items while I continued to wait. Once his transaction was done, he noticed me and apologized for cutting in front of me in line. Again, no worries. As I went to move up to purchase my items again, the first customer hopped in front of me, back to purchase her items. Or so I thought! She actually put more items on the counter and turned to me saying "I'm going to grab one more thing", before taking off to, assumedly, grab one more thing. I waited for a bit longer, while the cashier simply waited on the woman to come back to her items instead of letting me purchase my items. Annoyed, I turned to the friend who I was shopping with and mentioned 'I kinda just wanna put this back and take off'. This apparently enraged the woman who had all of her items on the counter, who was shopping behind me for her additional item, because she remarked "Really? You have that much rage in your body?". Of course, she hadn't witnessed that I had already been cut in line and had been waiting to cash out for nearly 5 minutes. However, as a Black woman, I knew exactly where her comment was coming from and that she would've absolutely never made a comment like that to me if I didn't have the color skin that I have. At no point in the whole saga did the cashier, nor any of the other employees, take any steps to intervene on my behalf, letting either of the customers who were so rude to me know that I should be next in line. It probably seems petty or minor, but the whole situation did ruin the rest of my day. And it think it was hurtful enough to warrant a conversation with whoever was working at that time. With customer service jobs, the core of your responsibilities are kind of self-explanatory. They're in the title! read more

Turkey sandwiches used to be $12, way bigger, and loaded with delicious turkey and arugula. Now they're $19, noticeably smaller, and barely have any turkey in them. The peanut butter cookies have also gone up in price and have gotten significantly smaller. Another spot charging more while giving you less and hoping nobody notices. read more

I happened upon this place after visiting Santa Canela. The beautiful flowers caught my eye, so my sister and I walked in. This store is beautifully curated. Lots of fresh produce, freshly baked bread, ready made foods, etc. but upon entering we were not acknowledged which I overlooked because the person at the register was talking to a customer. I used to love this place when it was the original owners... ever since it exchanged hands a few years ago it has really gone downhill. Sure the prices are high, but $5 for a single leek? Also they don't stock their veg as regularly as before so are often selling wilted lettuce at full price. Just go to the farmer's market instead. Service has also really gotten awful - the people working there don't actually seem to give 2fs about food or creating a warm atmosphere. I LOVE this place. The staff are all really nice and tge food is awesome. When they have the bread that looks like a ribcage, I have to get it. It has so much of the chewy exterior that I love with a soft interior. They have vegetables that you can't get anywhere else, like frisee and kumquats. Cookbook has slowly been growing on me. The first time I went it was purely out of curiosity. They had unique items like lemon cucumber, purple green beans, mandarinquat, red garlic and the most beautiful assortment of wild flowers that changes daily. I tried their infamous prosciutto dan, simple yet delish (baguette, butter & prosciutto). They also sell Nuri Brand sardines from Portugal. I saw a special on this cannery on Youtube and had to get my hands on them one day but was iffy about paying $10 for a can on eBay. Well lo and behold, I randomly looked at the glass case under the register and bam there it was for $5 a can, score! This is definitely a higher priced neighborhood market but the cleanliness, hard to find items and quality of their products makes the price point more understandable. Cute store yea, but prices are ridiculous. And my own experience with their customer service was not the best. Maybe because i am more brown skinned complexion, i am not sure but it was not a friendly vibe. I walked in, grabbed what I needed and placed it on the counter to pay. I was patiently waiting and the cashier (white male) come over and asks me "do you need help with something?" And I was still very friendly but in my head I was like "what do you mean, why else would I have an item at the register other than to pay". From Microplanes to Passion fruit, the products are top shelf , delish, organic and fresh! I used to shop here a lot during covid and found their prices to be high but within reason ... but they're no longer justifiable. I buy the same exact products from other markets around town and know that cookbook marks up their prices significantly. ($9 for a pint of cherry tomatoes vs $6 at the farmers market) I now only stop in if I'm already on Fig and in a pinch. I came here looking for a fairly healthy snack to hold me over while I was getting my hair done. I got a bird seed bar and a chocolate dipped macaroon. Both were good and yes, I needed 2 snacks. The bird seed bar was tasty and was filled with nuts. The chocolate macaroon was delicious. It tasted different from other macaroons I've tasted in the past and it seemed like there was a particular spice they put which tasted Indian. The store has fresh vegetables, fruits, pre-made food such as guacamole, hummus, etc. It's a pretty store located on a busy street. I'm going with 4stars because I support small businesses...but damn, these are some serious prices. We came looking for Kernels of Truth corn tortillas, which are reasonably priced and very good. We've tried both the white and blue and both were good, but my suggestion is you go for their masa and make your own! Makes a big difference to have it fresh. Last time they were out of all three and the manager/owner suggested a blue corn dry masa by a local chef and it is delicious. Adding a bit of salt perks up the flavor. Parking is much better than the EP location and that one seems to be a smaller store. I grew up visiting my aunt/cousins in Highland Park and we need to figure out how to let these communities retain their identity while incorporating the new. I was shocked by the overall grocery prices...maybe that's what it takes to be solvent? But I can see why there's been pushback in these ELA communities. They also don't provide prices, so if you need to know how much something is or are on a budget you need to ask about every single item. It's not for real people buying groceries - it's for wealthy people to virtue signal that they care about healthy food. The cashier won't bag your groceries if you bring your own bag. I work a few doors down and have been here countless times. I liked it until I found out something I had eaten numerous times that was labeled vegan was not in fact vegan (contains both milk and egg). I noticed that the item was sometimes rung up as what the label (set out each morning in front of each item) said, which included the brand name (a bake shop with a lot of vegan options) and the word "vegan", and other times rung up as a similar item (from another bake shop). I pointed this out a few times in a span of a few months and last time I was in I asked what the deal was. I was told this (the wrong label being put out) "keeps happening" and that the item is not what the label is. I had to ask if that item was vegan to find out that it wasn't. I would avoid prepared foods from Cookbook for those with allergies. read more

I am writing because I was so sad and disappointed to read Claudia G's 2-star review. Does a business deserve the sting of a 2-star review because the customer is making assumptions about the ethnicities of employees? Our household is mixed and we are as liberal as it gets, but there is cause for concern about the precedent a review like this sets. First of all, we were just served at the meat counter by a Black employee the other day. Second, how does this customer know for certain where people are from based on skin tone? Tom Segura, standup comedian has a recent Netflix special where he explains that he looks white but grew up with a Peruvian mother in a Spanish-speaking household. The jokes were about how confusing this is for some hotel receptionists in red states where they don't understand his last name and his fluency in Spanish. Third, how does this customer know that the owners aren't relying on family members to take shifts to help the business survive the pandemic? Fourth, there's another local business we know that is having trouble finding a skilled worker to run a specific part of their food business. It is a customer-facing job. They really need help and candidates keep falling through for a few months now. Should that business wait until a specific ethnicity comes along who meets the qualifications, or should they hire based on the qualifications they need? There is way to much to assume about this situation to shoot first and ask questions later. Who knows for sure but there's a good chance the owners of this establishment vote the same is this customer. The actual white supremacists in power in this country will always maintain a foothold on the rest of us if we keep going with this dynamic. Why aren't we having a conversation first? Why can't this customer write an email or make a call and have a discussion with Cookbook about this concern? Why does it have to be a takedown first? Could the takedown wait until after there's an attempt to communicate and the customer is dismissed or blown off? That would seem like a much more sensible reason to leave such a review. We don't talk anymore. We go from zero to cancel and that is so dangerous. If everyone on the left tried harder to get on the same page, we would eliminate the old white Republican patriarchy altogether and rid ourselves of that destructive force. But no, as long as Claudia has satisfied herself with her 2-star review, the GOP exploits our internal division and rages on with their narratives about cancel culture and "reverse racism". Now, enough of that. Cookbook has great food, with a great presentation. Awesome curating, very clean, a nice neighborhood spot. Our only criticism is that the service is lacking in that it takes the staff longer than you would expect to serve you. It's a small boutique neighborhood market with high prices- honestly, I'm not bothered by this bc I know there's a cost to quality; especially in this day and age where people prioritize quantity and instant gratification - quality preservation has been a lost art. Their selections are carefully curated and are of high quality - from fresh seasonal produce to prepared goods. They patronize local and small businesses so when you spend money at Cookbook, you are helping local economy in the process. They also seem to be environmentally conscious and exhibit zero/low-waste practices - thank you for being an example! They are the only place I can find the brand of gluten-free vermicelli noodles that I like (otherwise I'd have to order online from the UK). I'm glad to know they sell eucalyptus bundles. I haven't been able to locate any- even at the farmers market! You get a thick bundle for $7 and it lasts a very long time. Bulk bags of Rancho Gordo beans are sold here too! Cookbook has truly outdone itself--raising the price of their micro sandwich, the "Prosciutto Dan", a culinary masterpiece of half a mini baguette, a smear of butter, and a few prosciutto shavings, from $6 to a whopping $10. Yes, ten bucks for a snack that wouldn't satisfy a hamster. I've been a regular for years and the "Dan" has been my go to but I can no longer justify it. They also recently upped their prices A LOT. For example, I used to come in and get a $6 Prosciutto Dan sandwich everyday. Literally a thin baguette with butter and prosciutto is all that it is. Without warning they upped the price to $10!!! TEN DOLLARS. Are you kidding me?! Their prices were already kind of outrageous but this is just flat out disrespectful. Shame on you! Check your produce before you ask $6 on them. DiNapoli tomatoes that cost more then Whole Foods! Really guys? Prosciutto that costs more than Bristol Farms (same exact one)! Insanely overpriced to the point of disgust. It's one thing if you have a unique product or service but just go high for no reason on products that available at other places for less? Nasty approach and you did it. Even the staff looked like they knew this place won't last. One would expect to be approached or talked to at such prices but that didn't happen either. Have gone in here pre pandemic and they were rude , slow to help, and serve a lot of attitude. I've been trying to avoid the big grocery stores and wanted to support small businesses in my neighborhood. So Today I thought I would try them out again. After Waiting in line in the heat, the woman at the front desk was so rude and totally inappropriately scolded me about hand sanitizer. I'm sorry I didn't read anything anywhere about using it before touching anything BTW, I also carry and use hand sanitizer and was wearing gloves that I just put on THAT WERE CLEAN . But her attitude made me want to walk out , which I should have!!! I'm so sick of these businesses in a gentrified community serving out the attitude, WONT BE BACK.
