Ranchera preparada on point. Get it from the counter though, one time the counter was closed, got the prepackaged one. It looked good, but when I got home flipped it over a bunch of fat, some people like that, I'm not one of them. If I'm paying $8-9 a pound you all could keep the fat. Behind the counter is where they have the good meat, but it closes before the store does. The produce is good, avocados ready to be eaten the same day you buy them! Sometimes they'll even have one cut open, so you could see that they're ready...I appreciate that!!! I went to Big Saver yesterday and bought 3 lbs of deboned chicken legs and 3 lbs of Ranchera. Both meats were bad and smelled awful. If I could score them with a negative number I would. I would not recommend their market to my worst enemy. read more

I really enjoy going to this store. It's convenient. It's always immaculately stocked. Never an item out of place. Clean. The staff is amazing. Rarely ever a wait in line. The only thing I would change is the deli/meat department. I don't buy from there often, only because I can't communicate with the employees there. I like this store, I usually come here after work so I can pick up supplies for dinner. Nothing was really different this time, besides the fact that the manager was kind of rude. She was the female working from 6-7pm. I asked her if they had any chicken stock and she gave me kind of an attitude and said it was over there... and we are sold out. You don't have to be rude to be if your store can not properly order the inventory needed. Customer service with the manager made this place a 1 star place. Edit: I come to this supermarket all the time and I love how convenient it is. There was no flavor and what made it even worse was the small bits of broken bones hidden inside the meat! SERIOUS CHOKING HAZARD HERE. They were also very sharp! I would not say this is the best store. We would always go to this market since it's close to home. But we started doing our grocery shopping and we were looking for yogurt. I checked this out and it was marked down to 99cents because it's expired! I was also buying milk and their expiration is coming up. How gross is this! They have a huge bakery with tasty fresh bread, pan dulce, and pastries. You'll never fight for a parking space. There are other useful stores in the shopping center adjacent to the parking lot. You can get Chinese food, donuts, water, pizza, a manicure, and a loan all in the same place. Big Saver has a nice selection of Hispanic foods and ingredients. Big Saver back then was like stepping into TJ. Really bad and Mexican. Not saying mexican is bad just that it was filled with off brand mexican products, trashy, and had flies everywhere. Now the flies are still everywhere just they are more up to date. The pricing at this grocery store is expensive for little things. Like ice cream ranges from $4.99 for Thrifty when at Rite Aid it is $4.99 for two. Wow. And the bakery here is not so good. Everytime I go I see they leave the breads and pan dulces out for the flies to smell and lay babies on...they expect us to eat that $1 concha! The bolillo bread is good but is $1 for 3. Crunchy on the outside soft on the inside. But if you buy it you need to eat it that day. The pan dulce area always has flies lurking around the cabinet and is truly disgusting! Although I went and they had no flies on the breads...shocker. So if you are nearby and need a gallon of $2.00 milk you will have to keep driving because the only thing that is two dollars here is probably the pan dulces. read more

For Super Bowl, I had attended my boyfriend's dad's potluck. Among several tubs of store bought salsas, one stood out above the rest. When I asked where it came from, the boyfriend's dad replied, "Big Saver." A spicy habanero bottled hot sauce, that I used on everything from ceviche to chip dip, was also purchased at Big Saver. I had lived in El Sereno for 4 years and never stepped inside this store. If you're driving down Huntington, you may not see it. The sign doesn't face the street and neither does the entrance. We had to make a u-turn at Van Horne, the light where the Domino's shopping center is at, to turn into their lot. "It's like a super corner market", the boyfriend observed, referring to La Mexicana Meat Market on Poplar. This was a fair assessment. The selection of produce (and just about every other department) was larger, but some items were pricier. We stocked up on the hot sauce and salsa from Super Bowl. And though there were plenty of tortilla choices, none of them were of the carb smart variety. Where they shone was the bakery. We perused the pan dulce bake case and grabbed an $.80 guava pastry. This caramelized nicely with a toast in the toaster oven. I thought about a slice of cajeta flan. The price was $2.50 for the slice, or $5 for a whole. It ended up being a choco cajeta flan- double score. The store wasn't busy at all for a Saturday afternoon. Don't forget your reuseable bags, they will charge for plastic. read more

I had no idea this grocery was in this neighborhood. It's not facing the street. It's only visible if you're driving east on Huntington. Usually I go to the one on Main across from Target. That grocery is a lot smaller and doesn't have a bakery. This store had a remodeling and reopening I believe. It looks great! Bright, clean, organized, wide aisles, lots of sales. I picked up a flan 1.99. It wasn't too sweet. Tasted like an omelette to be honest with you. Not sweet enough for my tastes. The caramel topping was an afterthought. I did not see any tres leche slices in the cake area. A little disappointed about that. Went straight to the meat dept. They have marinated and fresh meats. They have white meat marinated chicken breast. They have marinated chuck and marinated flank. The flank was twice as pricey as the other meats. They have marinated hen parts, not a whole marinated hen so I bought two halves. Good enough. They have marinated whole pork chop which looked fantastic and was on sale for 1.99/lb. I can't wait to try it. They have housemade chorizo but I didn't pick that up. Next time. If you're in a hurry there's fresh, hot rotisserie chicken 5.99. I like how they have tortillas right there so you can grab what you need on the stop and go. Ice cream aisle was sparse. I tried a mango with chamoy cup for 4.99. Not worth it. Just go to a local ice cream shop. Sodas with real sugar in them..check. 1.19 a bottle. Picked up Jarritos, Fanta and Cokes. Fresh produce was well stocked but not as large as most super markets. I found pink horchata made with corn syrup instead of high fructose corn syrup. It had dairy in it tho. 1.19 ea. Key limes .99 for 2lbs special. Hello key lime pie! Grabbed a bag. Nopales with the pricklies chopped off, yes please. 2.99 for a bag. I'm set for dinner! After 5 there's a great taco truck (El Ranchito) off Huntington around the corner. Great tacos. If you go in thru the parking lot there's more space in the back. Off street parking is free and plentiful. Convenient location, good sales, I'lll be back. Also shout out to the security guard in the front who helped me pull out a cart. Then while I was checking out, my kid threw a tantrum and tossed candy out the cart. So I went to the market and as I was pushing my cart into the store my hands starting burning so I wipe onto the sleeves of my flannel. Then smell got stronger of Clorox. My hands turn red and my blouse and flannel shirt got stained. Who ever was cleaning the carts is using the wrong formula to disinfect the carts. Now I got concern because how about if an elder person had wipe their hands. So I talk to the gentleman who was cleaning. He didn't care one bit of how it stained my clothes and burned my hands. I hope they take a good look and rethink the formula they use to clean the carts. read more

The store is always nice and clean. My thing is, WHY do they ALWAYS have BRAZILIAN music blasting? I mean, c'mon now, their customer base, I would venture to say, is 80% Spanish (Mexican dialect) speaking, yet when you go in, it's Brazilian music in Portuguese. I don't get it. I just love this little market and missed it so when I was not in the neighborhood during the lockdown. Their tortillas, beans, marinated flank steak are my favorites. The guacsalsa is especially good, and I even made the long trek from home during the lockdown to fetch some. I get in and out fast on my lunch break. I love lil Mexican-oriented supermarkets because they greatly remind me of my childhood. Before you even walk through the doors, you have pillars surrounding the perimeter of the store so that you can't even take the shopping carts out! Haha, I love it! They make good use of the area and my mom often finds good deals on their produce here (I can't say the same about their aisle items though). You also get to stare at their pinatas and random toys (and Hello Kitty replicas!). I always love shopping at foreign supermarkets because it's a fresh breath of culture and it's truly identified with what Los Angeles is all about. read more

Honestly, I'm not very impressed with Big Saver. I use to go to the one on Figueroa and Ave 21 and it always smelled like something had died in there. I only go there when they have sales on meats. Other than that, I don't shop there. Food is over priced, produce is always rotten. Food 4 Less on Fig and 52 is so much better. read more
