Let's start with the good points- when ordering from their deli, most meat options were enjoyed. Chicken, asada and pastor were good. Carnitas had great flavor but the meat was entirely fatty. Every single bite had huge globs of gelatinous fat. The tortillas used for the tortillas were on the thicker side which made for a taco that didn't fall apart while eating. Also, both the red and green salsa were decent. Now, for things that we didn't like. A burrito with everything on it did not come as expected. I was expecting meat, beans, rice, salsa, onions and cilantro but instead it only had meat, beans and lettuce. Very odd. Again, the tortilla was great. As for the actual carniceria, do not order ranchera thinking you are buying a fairly lean cut of beef. Out of the 4 lbs we bought, after trimming we were only left with 3lbs. So far this is the most authentic Mexican food I've had in East Lansing. You order in the back near the meat section and can shop in the grocery store while you wait. The service is very friendly. I was on the hunt for Aji Amarillo or Aji Mirasol for a recipe I'm preparing to make and I stumbled upon the Supermercado on Old 127 in my search. I was excited to find Aji Amarillo here, and also picked up some Mexican Oregano (Yes, it's different than Italian Oregano - It has more citrus undertones!), shrimp bouillon, and whole nutmeg. I also grabbed a couple tacos to try and they were amazing! Hands down, they wiggled their way into my top five taco spots in Lansing! I had the pollo, chorizo, and al pastor tacos, all with onions and cilantro. The meat was perfectly seasoned, the red and green salsas were incredibly robust, and they came in doubled up corn tortillas for the win! The first thing you will want to do when you come to the store is to go straight to the back and write down on the order pad what delicious prepared food (burrito, taco, gordita, horchata, etc...) you would like from the overhead menu, and hand it to the cooks. (All we tried have been excellent.) Then explore the store to find all sorts of delicious Mexican groceries for your basket - we stock up on frozen tropical fruits, queso fresco, canned goods, etc.. Grab a red tray and tongs, and load it up with flaky pastries and cookies - by now it is a good time to go back to the grill and see if your food is ready, then bring all to the register and eat at the picnic tables outside. Fantastic! We are not Hispanic, and our experience is that we have always felt MOST welcomed. My son is studying Spanish at school, and the ladies at the register have been so gracious and fun helping him learn the names of foods we're buying and encouraging him to be brave and try speaking. Once when we were looking for tamales and they hadn't arrived yet, the fellow from the back even ran up to tell us they had just come in as we were buying the rest of our items. This is a very cozy and delightful place to visit. read more

I've heard many good things about this place so I decided to give it a try. I guess I didn't realize this place was a market too. The meat counter is filled with chicken, pork, and beef in many styles along with reasonable prices. I ordered a burrito. When it was ready I was like wow this thing is huge. A fork is much needed when eating this. So disappointed. They gave me the wrong meat and there wasn't anything fabulous to it. It was filled with meat, refried beans, and cheese. The menu said it included jalapeños but they weren't in my burrito. The salsa had a olive flavor to it which wasn't working for me. I needed up just ending the flour tortilla. Maybe I'll give this place another try and just get a taco. read more

We've been supporting this store for more than a decade, I want to make that clear before I write this review. Over the past few years it seems as if you're not Hispanic, you need to be prepared to have lukewarm service at best, or to be treated poorly with disrespect and disdain, at the very worst. Unlike the most recent review, I've never had an issue with being treated rudely or "less than" for not being Hispanic. Staff has always been super friendly to me and I come every few weeks. I usually come for the food--not to sound like a gringo, but their quesadillas are great! Tacos of course are but I was amazed by their quesadillas and always have to order one. I love their baked goods. I'm not an expert on Mexican food or pastries in any way, shape, or form but I know what is delicious and their food is great. Love their tres leches cake from the cooler as well as their flan. And I love browsing their aisles and finding random things to buy as I wait for my food. read more

The tacos are South Texas/Mexico quality (very good). Best tacos I have ever had in Michigan, and I am from Texas. It's basically a little food mart and they sell hot food inside as well. Good place, even if you don't speak spanish, you'll be fine. GREAT TACOS, proper Mexican style food. read more

Hole in the wall establishments are my favorite and places like this joyously remind me of that. I ordered a chicken burrito, an azada burrito y quesadilla. I got to flex my Spanish speaking skills, which is a huge bonus. Best way to spend Cinco de Mayo in a place that radiates the Latino culture. Plus, you can easily realize that the food will be authentic. The man who took the order/made the food honestly looked happy that I even attempted to do the order en Español. I fortunately ordered it correctly, and he understood my very broken Spanish and in return made me a wonderful dinner! The prices are beyond reasonable and the portions are plentiful. This is a "run of the mill," super mercado Mexicano. Has a large selection of fresh produce, including: hot peppers, cilantro, tamatillos, chayote, etc. Good selection of meat at the counter, and a good selection of the dried necessities. Normally this would earn them three stars, but given that they have delicious bakery goods, and how hard it is to find a decent panaderia, I give it the one star bump. read more

This is the best Mexican place in the Lansing area. Just go to the back near the meat deli counter and write down your order (pen and paper provided) and hand it to them. Do that first thing and you can walk around while you wait (get a soda, shop, etc). You can sit outside at the benches and eat there or take it home. The prices are fair. Hands down, the best tacos & burritos for the best price! A little intimidating to visit at first if you are not a Spanish speaker, but they have a translated menu on the side. Also, you don't have to speak a word to order because you write down what you want and hand it to them. Been to super mercado twice when I go to Lansing, mainly for the tacos, gorditas, etc. I would never have known about this place if not for some fellas who told us about it. They are mainly a grocery but their meat section prepares take-out cooked food. If you don't mind going in there and wait for your order, I think its the best mexican in the area. Best Mexican food in the Lansing area, bar none. Ground beef burrito with a bit of cinnamon, onions and tomatoes in the mix, in a burrito the size of your head with a choice of salsas to set your mouth on fire or just to add flavor. Tacos al pastor, tacos made with chicken, beef, carnitas, lengua. This is the real deal. If only they had mole, I'd eat here every day. But since I make mole at home, this is a good place to get all of the ingredients. read more

Had an absolutely horrific experience with getting meat from the deli counter. Fried pork was wrapped and sold...later to find out it was spoiled and rotting. The most disgusting food experience I've ever had shopping for food. Had been to market before for some chips, salsa etc and it was fine, but after that shocker I will not be returning.
