Within just a few days, his bed, table, and caregivers were in place, and support began immediately. Nurse Jamie, a skilled and compassionate male nurse, connected with my father right away. The caregivers also formed an instant, warm bond with my stepmom, who could no longer care for him on her own. Their kindness brought comfort and stability to our whole family. After 8-9 months of their attentive care, my father began eating again, walking, and truly thriving -- at 96 years old. He improved so much that he no longer qualified for hospice. We requested that the caregiver take notes for us about medications our mother received and the basic care given by the nurses and other specialty staff. Our mother was intubated so could not express herself verbally, but needed comforting care from time to time. We thought the person sent to work for us seemed capable and understood exactly what we wanted. However, when reviewing her notes, we couldn't tell what had gone on, especially when the nurse the next day would comment about a particular situation that had occurred. We told the manager of the V.A. office that it was not as we wanted and were told to instruct her again, which we did. A month or so later we were desperate for a caregiver for a couple of nights at another hospital where our mother had been moved. Visiting Angels sent the same caregiver. Thanks to the staff at the hospital, we found out that she was going to the lobby to sleep most of the night. A minor issue we have is that we didn't receive receipts for a few payments, though, thankfully, we had copies of our checks so they could satisfy tax deductions. V.A. is a franchise operation and each office is managed by different people.
