This was on a top to go list in San Juan, while not PR cuisine a I love their take on Peruvian food. First - give me more of the big kernel corns in anything. I do love my ceviche too. It's a small place - so def get a reservations and then go down the street to the main plaza to dance the night away.

We went to Sur Barra Nikkei a little after lunchtime on a weekday. We arrived around 2pm and the restaurant was pretty empty, which was lucky for us because it is a small space and from things I had read about it, it seems like it is a very popular spot that can be hard to get into. The restaurant is in a great location right by the art museum and has a small front patio with a few tables. Inside, there are a few tables and some bar seating. We took an Uber there so I'm not too sure about parking, but it didn't seem to have a parking lot and I think there was just some street parking out front. The service was incredible. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and knew the menu extremely well. He literally explained every aspect of every single dish on the menu to the point that I wondered if he was also the chef! He showed expertise and knowledge and helped us make decisions that turned out to be fantastic. The menu is divided into multiple sections, including appetizers, ceviche, nigiri, and larger dishes. We ordered a few small plates and a couple of nigiri dishes to share and didn't get a main dish, but we were pretty full. The elements of each dish were thoughtfully crafted, and came together wonderfully. A warning to patrons, the menu is predicated around seafood, specifically raw fish, and while there are dishes that do have cooked meat, there are not that many options for those who are not interested in eating raw fish. There are some dishes that will appeal to vegetarians; in fact, the mushroom setas was a hit. The Setas is a gluten free dish that consisted of mushrooms 3 ways: mushroom leche de Tigre with a bed of mushrooms and topped with dried mushrooms. It was a very umami dish. The Tiradito Nikkei consisted of slices of snapper with a leche de Tigre that had a yuzu flavor to it. The fresh was fresh and flavorful and paired very well with the leche de Tigre. The Nigiri Paracas consisted of thinly sliced squid atop sushi rice with pistachio. Our waiter explained that after we had finished the pieces of nigiri, we were to pour the a seaweed kombu onto the plate and mix it with the panko and sesame sprinkled on the plate and that would serve as a palate cleanser. The squid was wonderful, but the texture of the sushi rice was a little stickier than I am used to, and it was a bit sweet for me. The kombu, however, was deliciousWe also ordered a Tiradito Oeste, which was an off-menu dish that our waiter recommended and had a tuna that is caught off the west coast of the island. It was served with a creamy sauce that paired nicely with the fish. The Tiradito Caliente was a bit spicy (as the name suggests) and had this really interesting scallop gelatine in the center with scallops that were perfectly tender, and calamari that were fresh and delicious. It was garnished with sweet, crunchy canchitas. This was the such a unique dish and I have never eaten anything like this. The Renzo con Micha was probably my favorite dish. It was an El Capitan fish ceviche with ahi Amarillo leche de Tigre which had a great spice to it, sweet potato purée, and two types of Peruvian corn - chocio, and canchitas (similar to popcorn). It was a great mixture of flavors and textures with the tender fish and both types of corn. We finished the meal with the matcha ginger tart and elected to try both ice creams, black sesame and toasted sesame. The size of the tart was perfect to share between the two of us and it was not too sweet. The ice creams were both great. The toasted sesame was a bit sweeter than the black sesame. Overall, we had a wonderful meal here. The service was amazing, the menu was extensive and the each dish was crafted perfectly. From the inclusion of local seaweed to jellied scallops, each dish had a certain special element that set it apart Overall: Food 9/10 Ambience 8/10 (but this was in the middle of the day) Service 20/10

Food was great, servers were really attentive and explained dishes in detail. Most of them were spicy! Drinks were ok, and the place was very hip!

We had an exceptional experience at Sur! They were incredibly accommodating and allowed us to push our reservation an hour later last minute. When we got there, the staff greeted us gracefully and right away started us with AMAZING cocktails. The server was very, very knowledgeable about the menu and wanted to make sure we had a unique and unforgettable dinning experience. The restaurant is simple and very tastefully decorated. I wish I had this restaurant at home! It is a must in Puerto Rico.

Super friendly server! Started off the evening with a delicious Prosecco 5/5 Ceviche which was very fresh and well flavored. 4/5 Sushi Camarón Picante was the highlight of the meal. 5/5

We hosted an investor dinner here and the food was literal art! The appetizers were delectable, the main course was absurdly delicious, and the dessert was utterly delecious. Will definitely will return. The dessert was green matcha, ginger crust, berry compote and sesame ice cream, and sprinkled with salt. This is a perfect location for any event with 20+, intimidate setting, amazing service, excellent chef.

Puerto Rican and Japanese fusion delight. I can't say enough about Sur Barra - the Chef was simply amazing. The food was INSANELY INCREDIBLE. Every dish we ate was magnificent. Then there was the staff - THE BEST OF THE BEST! I have been in service for over 20 years. I have never been more impressed with every single person who works at Sur Barra. Friendly. Efficient. Simply wonderful. Thank you to Sur Barra for hosting us for our special dinner and proving that fusion food is just spectacular. GREAT WORK TO ALL. We will always come back.

A fusion of Japanese and Peruvian seemed surprising, but we're always game for a new experience. The waitress explained everything and gave great guidance on selections. Everything came with an appealing artistic presentation. The standout was the Tiradito Caliente with squid and scallops. The combination of flavors and textures was a fabulous. We also tried several cocktails. The Espíritu Libre was refreshing without being too sweet. I would definitely return.

Drinks are superb (couldn't wait to take pics until after we had a bit). Food was also pure class - recommend the Aradito Caliente. Service was fantastic too.

Parking is a bit of a downside since there isn't much available, so I had to pay for parking. Once inside, though, everything moved incredibly fast. I got my food in less than 10 minutes, which is probably the fastest I've ever been served at a restaurant. It almost made me question how fresh it was, but after eating, I can say it was actually very good. I ordered the grilled white fish with lemon and egg fried rice with yum yum sauce on the side, plus shrimp tempura sushi to go. The yum yum sauce tasted like a mix of ketchup and mayonnaise, but when I mixed it with the fried rice, it was really, really good. The fish itself was tasty but needed more salt I ended up adding salt and squeezing lime over it to bring out the flavor. It seemed like it was only seasoned during marination and not finished properly. The salad wasn't anything special, but overall, for how quickly the food came out, the quality was impressive. Portions are generous, and the pricing matches what you get. We came around midnight and left close to 1 AM when they were closing. The place looked packed, but service was still quick and efficient. Our server was okay--nothing standout, but no issues either. Overall, I'd come back. Fast service, solid food, and a good late-night option.

The sushi rolls left a lot to be desired for - the one with the beef in it wasn't quite good. We only ate a piece of it. The crab Rangoons were decent - nothing to write home about. Citing how she was born into communism, then lived in socialist countries and now has made a home in a capitalist society, she spoke with authority about what is happening in the world right now. She eloquently reminisced about her experience in a communist country, where the enemies were the capitalists who, "kept us from achieving our full potential," in the former republic of Czechoslovakia. The overarching message is that there is more power in unity than being in a fragmented society where its people scramble for truth, justice and freedom. A concept like Godai can only exist in a free society. Everywhere I went on this recent trip to Puerto Rico, I heard people talk about this restaurant: on business meetings, at drinks at a hotel bar and from local friends. Apparently, it's a bit of a social media darling among locals. And, there's good reason. What started as a speakeasy omakase establishment by chef couple Cesar and Daysi is now a full-service restaurant with 3 different spaces: izakaya, omakase tasting room and zen garden. Only in an environment where people have the liberty to pursue their passions, learn techniques from different cultures and there's a free exchange of ideas, can a restaurant in one island nation be inspired by the culinary traditions of another island nation. My dining companions and I were so inspired by the well orchestrated and attentive service, I asked Chef Cesar whether he had made everyone read Will Guidara's "Unreasonable Hospitality." He demurred with humility and said, "we're still trying, and thank you." The food was phenomenal. I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've had black truffle shaved over my tuna crispy rice, and it was tasty. We also had the bluefin and salmon crudo, duck fried rice, spicy edamame, shishito peppers, robata miso black cod, Alsatian white wine, unfiltered sake and panna cotta with raspberry. I noted how authentic everything looked and tasted, but there was a local twist and cariño expressed in every dish. This was not fusion, but Japanese food seen through a local lens. It's not so much that they're trying to recreate an experience in Japan, but paying homage with respect to Japanese gastronomy. You might think that Japan and Puerto Rican cultures are polar opposites, but food brings people of all types together. Godai is a great testament of this, and Paulina would certainly enjoy this spot for so many reasons.
