Avoid the Sur La Table Rustic Bread Cooking Class--Too Expensive with Very Little to Do We attended the Rustic Bread course for my cousin's birthday at the White Plains store. At $90 per person, the course was ridiculously overpriced particularly since 4 of us shared the duties for making two loaves of bread. We had so little to do that one of us added salt, the other added oil, and the four of us alternated kneading one loaf at a time. I have attended other cooking classes in the past and typically, everyone gets to participate and be engaged during the class with tasks like cutting, cooking, and prepping the dishes. We have also always been given the opportunity to eat the meal we made in the process so the course is interactive, serves as a meal, and teaches new cooking/baking techniques. Unfortunately, we paid $360 for the four of us to stand around, share two small loaves of bread and some butter among the group. We did contact customer service about our concerns and while seeming attentive at first, they ultimately did nothing to address our concerns. I would advise that you look for a cooking class elsewhere that will most likely be far more affordable and hands-on with the option to enjoy the items you bake/cook in a fairer proportion where everyone is allowed, at the minimum, to make their own loaf. read more

Disappointing Experience -- Not What We Expected We booked a cooking class at Sur La Table to celebrate my son's birthday -- there were four of us (my husband, my son, his girlfriend, and myself) and we spent about $400 for the experience. While the idea of cooking together sounded fun, the experience fell far short of expectations. We were surprised to learn that our group would cook one steak to share among the four of us. For the cost, we expected at least one steak per person or at least half a steak each. After standing for two hours preparing the meal, we assumed we'd be able to sit and enjoy what we cooked -- but there were no chairs provided. When I asked for one due to back discomfort, I was given a folding chair, but since the tables were counter height, it didn't help much. I've attended several cooking classes at other establishments, and this was by far my least enjoyable experience. I've never had to stand through the entire meal before -- it really took away from what should have been a fun, celebratory evening. For the price and reputation of Sur La Table, I expected a much better setup and overall experience. We actually left hungry and considered going out to get something else to eat afterwards. This class left a lot to be desired but seems like small adjustments can be made for a better experience for guests. read more

A group of four of us participated in a cooking class here back in December. It was on a Tuesday evening and we actually wound up unintentionally having a private class, seeing as no one else had signed up. I believe our instructor's name was James. He was funny, charismatic and informative. We took the Secrets of Great Sushi Class where learned how to make sushi rolls such as vegetable hand rolls, shrimp tempura rolls & spicy tuna rolls. Learning how to make sushi is always something I've wanted to do and I'm glad to finally have had the opportunity to try it. The class taught us little tips and tricks like how to tempura fry shrimp (carbonation from seltzer, who knew?), making of spicy mayo (it's literally kewpie mayo & siracha to taste? brilliant). I don't know how soon I'll be making sushi on my own at home, I think I'll leave it up to the professionals for now. This was a well enjoyed night out learning a new skill. Looking forward to taking another cooking class again here in the hopefully not so distant future! read more

Crooks! Never again! Signed up for a cooking class for my husband's birthday. The day of the class, there was a snow/ice storm. The website was updated that morning stating 12pm opening. I was not told anything about still coming in, I assumed it was closed until 12pm. I emailed about the class and was told it wasn't cancelled and no refund. This is bad business for sure. I would have tried to make the drive, but why would I assume the store being closed meant I still should come. Good luck with that. read more

Not worth it. Went to Saturday night class as a date. Class was overbooked & one couple had to stand off to the side without a table. We ended up not being served the main course as all of the food was distributed prior to our turn. Wildly disappointing. Try a different vendor. read more

Went on a Valentines date with the Italian Romance cooking class. The staff members were VERY nice, but I do have to say.. The food quite frankly was terrible. I eat everything under the sun, but the food prepared was very bland, unfinished sorbet that was as strong as mouthwash, and the actual presentation of the food was not really good. I was not the only person who unfortunately thought that. Most participants barely even ate a few bites of the food. On top of that, they oversold the class and had me and my girlfriend separated from the rest of the couples, leaving us with little interactions with the rest of the couples there (Which can make a cooking class that much better!) All in all, I feel like this was a one off occurrence. I do feel as if I did go back, it would be MUCH better. I think it was just a bad night for the staff. Aside from that all, I do feel like the price per seat ($98) was a bit extreme, especially considering that there were 12 participants in total. If prices were cheaper for such a large class, I would 1000% book again in a heartbeat, but to pay $200 to be in a cooking class with 10 other people, regardless of the food, was quite displeasing. read more

Today I returned a wok I had ordered online and tried to cancel the order, but was told less than 12 hours after I'd ordered it that it was too late. (Granted, not the store's fault, but still... a bad customer service policy; I was told on the phone that I could "refuse the delivery from UPS" - ??? How does someone even do that?) So I brought it to the White Plains store in the box in which it had been shipped. When I approached the register, the man who took my return said, "You didn't have to bring the box." I explained that this was how it had been shipped and, that it was easier to carry for me this way. He continued,"Well, it makes more garbage for us. It has to be thrown out somewhere, so I guess now we have to do it." I was stunned at this rude reaction. He then began to process the return and handed me the packing slip back and said,"OK, you're all set." I asked how much I'd get refunded and his response was "It's on your receipt" (which he had not yet handed me) -"It's what you paid for it." Then he handed me the receipt and I was able to see the amount. "That was my question," I said. Unnecessarily snippy and rude! Clearly this return was a huge bother to this guy and he definitely let me know it. Last time I give my business to this snooty place! read more

I was happy when Sur la Table reopened. We'd enjoyed cooking classes there previously and decided to get each other an anniversary gift of the "Date Night" /Surf and Turf-class. The chef instructor couldn't have been more pleasant and well trained. The food was very good. My 2 star rating is based on the fact that once we'd stood and cooked for 1 1/2 hours there were no chairs and we had to stand and eat. We spent $198.00 for the experience and couldn't enjoy our meal in any sort of comfort. The chef was embarrassed but she said she'd been told there were no seats due to some safety regulation Well, sorry Sur la Table there will not be a second date for us. read more

Tried out the grilling class with my husband and it was a great experience. They offer you coffee, tea, cappuccino, or espresso to start while you get settled in and have some sort of loaf to snack on while you get settled in. You work in groups prepping and cooking the food. Our instructor entertained all of our questions on and off topic. At the end we all sit down to a meal and enjoy the food we made. I had never explored the store itself, but they have so many gadgets that will make you feel like your kitchen was deprived. The garlic roller CHANGED OUR LIVES. A little tube that you roll the garlic in that peels it in seconds. I will never go back to how I used to do it; THAT way of life is for peasants. If you get one thing from that store, get that. Trust me. Great spot and may try other cooking classes for fun in the future. The pasta class sounds like fun. read more

Did a cooking class here with Chef Monet. We really enjoyed the entire experience of learning to make a delicious meal. My only suggestion would be to advertise classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced. Not all of us know basics like seasoning and how to not overdo it. It would have been nice if more of those things were explained along the way while making a fairly unfamiliar dish. Chef Monet answered all of our questions though so we did leave with more knowledge and full bellies. They should also really consider getting a liquor license because wine pairings with steak dinner is a must. It doesn't go so well with cappuccino which is what the store offered. read more

I was delighted to see my favorite kitchen store was in the Simon Mall in White Plains. However, I encountered a nasty employee today that will stop me from ever returning! I was attempting to purchase a set of napkins which were not priced. A pleasant young woman tried to locate the price, when an older male employee took over the search. I let one customer go ahead of me, then inquired if he found the price. He, in an obnoxious tone told me, " it will take as long as it takes." I informed him no thank you. He refuted in the same tone that he was trying to find it. I informed him that I didn't like his attitude. I don't feel that I did anything to warrant this treatment. And, as a senior citizen I felt I was treated with disrespect. Sur la Table needs to instruct their employees on treating customers with courtesy! read more

My daughter gave me this class as gift for Father's Day and we attended it together. She picked Down by the Shore which involved making (and eating!) crab cakes, lobster rolls, cole slaw and strawberry shortcake. Other than the lobster which had been pre-cooked to save time and the crab meat which was canned, we made everything else. So we made the dough for the strawberry shortcake, baked it, chopped all the vegetables for the crab cakes and lobster rolls and shredded everything for the cole slaw. We made, from scratch, the remoulade for the cole slaw and the aioli for the crab cakes. We were paired with another couple and shared all these duties as well as frying the crab cakes. Chef Jean-Philippe was helpful showing us how to tell when the crab cakes needed to be flipped and when they were done and showed me some important knife skills, something I surely need help with. He had a great sense of humor and made the class fun and enjoyable. I had a good enough time to talk with my daughter about taking another class and my wife suggested maybe getting some of our friends together and taking a class together. read more

My husband and I took the sushi knife skills cooking class. We had so much fun we had with Pete A and the sushi knife skills class. Pete was awesome and very knowledgeable. We loved the kitchen and how big it is. We all got to participate in making the various stages of the meal. We learned a lot while enjoying the process of making sushi. We only had 6 people in the class which made it even better. We had such a great experience, my husband signed up for another class with Pete for the future. We will definitely be back. The location is easy for us to get to and the staff at the store was so friendly and great. Thank you for such a fun and different type of date night! One recommendation -- that people can BYOB, or bring their own wine to enjoy with the dinner! read more

This review is for the cooking class, unfortunately I'm not at the point in my life where I can drop $300 on a pot. Anyways I went over the weekend to the date night class and had a great time. If you're looking for something different to do with a girl this is a great option. All of her friends thought it was really cool and unique plus it's very low key since you're with other couples. Back to the cooking class...it's $80 a person for the date night classes which is not too bad. The class lasts two hours and obviously you get to eat what you cook. We made French food, mussels in a white sauce for the appetizer, chicken and mashed potatoes for the main course, and a chocolate mousse for dessert. The class was pretty interactive and I learned some good tips and tricks for next time I'm cooking. The chef gets everyone involved and has each person help with a different thing and our chef even threw in some jokes. The kitchen has some very high end equipment and I was impressed with how clean everything was, but then again you're talking about a Sur La Table in The Westchester. I kind of wish the chef had explained a little bit more about certain techniques and my date said she wanted him to smile more and not look so bored, but overall it was a great time and I'd definitely go back for another class. read more

This is a review for the brunch entertaining cooking class. It was really nice and I had a great time! The menu consisted of eggs Benedict over avocado toast with bacon, lemon ricotta pancakes, and homemade cinnamon rolls. Everything is prepped and ready for you to make, which is nice, and the chef takes you along with demos of each of the steps. It was pretty easy and the end results were great, the food was delicious! My favorite had to be the avocado toast with eggs Benedict. Our chef, Joelle, was wonderful! She is very passionate and knowledgeable about her craft, and taught us lots of useful tips and tricks in the kitchen. Everything from poaching eggs to making hollandaise to cooking pancakes. We all had a great time, the environment was relaxed and friendly. Overall, it was such fun and I would definitely recommend doing it again. I would also recommend to bring a friend, since it seems to be a pair-type activity even though you cook in teams of four. The kitchen we cooked in was very nice also with clean and new equipment, definitely cool working in that restaurant-esque atmosphere. They offer a big selection of classes with different themes and focuses, so there's something for everyone. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

I recently received a meat thermometer from my son for my birthday. While it had many features I wanted, there were some shortcomings. Having the receipt, I attempted to return it. Even though it was only purchased two weeks ago, had the original receipt, and was clearly unused a cash refund wasn't an option. Either a refund to my son or a store credit were the only options. Took a Healthy Cooking Class yesterday with my family of 4 at the White Plains store. Unfortunately I was quite unimpressed. The class was so packed in that it was literally difficult for all of us to stand at the table, let alone move our elbows to cut or stir. Chef Jean was friendly enough but was just assigning insignificant tasks (chop this onion) without even any valuable hints on knife skills etc. He was assembling without commentary/learning. We were able to draw it out of him with questions, but would have been far less informed if we had not taken the lead to try to learn more. At $70 per person, I've had far better cooking classes. This is a fine place with a good selection of items needed by any serious chef. Yes, it is a bit cluttered and cramped, and the store would be a lot easier to navigate and find items in if there were more floor-space. This makes their near-competitor across the hall (which shall go nameless) more comfortable to shop in, but Sur La Table is a nice place with --usually-- quite nice people who are smart, aware, and knowledgeable about their inventory. I like this spot, and it is always my first choice for cuisine-related appliances, goods, and materials. read more

I took my first Sur La Table cooking class today, May 18, 2016, and it was great. "French Pastries from Scratch" with Chef Jean-Philippe Voiron was full of information, and full of opportunities for hands-on experience. The chef gave clear instructions and was always happy to answer questions. We made French Toast Macarons, Fresh Strawberry Financiers, and Profiteroles with Crème Chantilly. They were delicious! We were given boxes to fill with the fruits of our labor and take home. I am choosing my next class right now.
