Thinking outside the box. Best phrase I can use to describe this place. Thai food with a twist; particularly with a Japanese twist and I'm here for it. I've been here when they first opened and recently this month. Blown away both times! Their Tom Yum Karaage had that impeccable Sour & Savory flavor along with the crunchiness of that double-fried goodness. Sura is a hidden gem! Although unassuming from the outside, the restaurant is comfortably lowkey and perfect for both date night and diners decompressing alone after a long day. I stopped by and ordered the Special Chili Noodles and they were fantastic. The carbonara-reminiscent fusion dish featured melt-in-your-mouth bacon with an addictive sauce that complemented the parmesan cheese and Thai basil. I'm not totally sold on the tomatoes, but maybe some extra produce *slightly* lessens the guilt of this carb-heavy goodness. Staff was friendly and generous with suggestions. We went for dinner here earlier today, and the place is a divey under ground joint that has newspaper on the entrance walls, with sticky tables and was as loud as it can be where you could barely carry on a conversation. I have to give this family owned business props. Its located in the basement so the atmosphere is dark and homey. The bar only sits 4 people so it's cramped for sure. Anthony is a great bartender and makes killer drinks. I recommend trying any of them as I indulged in several and all were good. The Salmon Crudo and Quail Egg Wontons were good. I can't say the Duck Laab was to my liking though as I didn't like the flavor profile. I think this is a cool place to come with somebody to grab a table to eat and drink. The bar is just too small and I felt bad for Anthony as he entertained me the whole time I was there. This subterranean tiny lounge feels like a bit of a secret yet clearly it is not. Our server was fun, sassy, and helpful with choosing from this amazing menu. Amazing flavors. My husband and came in on a Friday night ridiculously early (5pm) and tried several of their small plates and a couple drinks. The service was great and flavors were out of this world! The duck laab is a must try! Salmon was really fresh, a little too spicy for a wimp like me, but my husband loved. Seated quickly and served food quickly, which made me think it's all reheated. Had quail egg wonton, pork belly, and Brussel sprouts. Wonton were surprisingly good and would get them again. Brussels were the best thing we had. Pork belly was rubbery and difficult to chew and seemed undercooked. I did attempt to move or reservation up (just because) but no one answered the phone and their voicemail was full. I was greeted with kindness and was looking forward to my first meal here. My friend was about 10 minutes late so when she finally arrived we were told that due to the holiday season they close at 9:30. I don't mind closing early but I think they should have blocked off reservations past 8PM. There's just not really a way to have a thoughtful dining experience under that time crunch. We felt very rushed by our server. Our food was pretty good. No real complaints there. I had the shrimp & chicken dumplings, and the salt and pepper shrimp. Both apps were tasty. . I enjoyed the chinari spritz but my second drink which was a take on an espresso martini was not good. When the bill arrived we had the full balance due, when you book on tock, your $10/pp deposit is supposed to go to the bill. That's what it says in the confirmation. When we asked It we were told we would just receive a refund of the $20 separately which was frustrating. I think that should be stated on the reservation. What a fantastic find that is Sura! Though the interior is small, you are allowed to sit and eat for a max of 1hr and 30 minutes. You can make a reservation online or walk in. I went on a Friday evening and got the: S&P Rolls (5/5): fried shrimp and pork roll that tasted just like a parent's cooking! If you're a fan of dim sum, it's a great thing to share Boneless duck Lab (4/5): the duck was great and I was a big fan of the rice cracker too. While we waited for our table we went to the bar area and got a drink. The drinks were $30 and on top of that added a $10 tip on the bill! Not OK. We then got our table and looked at the menu and on the top it said that due to being "authentic Thai food there is a 20% gratuity automatically added. We decided to leave. This is a complicated review to write. There are things about Sura restaurant that I found great, perfect even. But then there are things that just completely miss the mark. Here are some of the good things: (1) the dumplings were among the BEST dumplings I have ever had. The filling was so flavorful, juicy and filling. The dumpling wrapper itself was very good too. I felt like eating the sauce with a spoon; and (2) the service was very nice. Friendly, competent, and with just the right amount of attention paid to us. They kept filling up my water glass, time after time, without even a need to look up and see where they were. They seemed so kind and friendly too. Here are some of the bad things: (1) the atmosphere of this restaurant is sub-par. First of all, it is in a basement. There is a light odor of mildew. The decoration is not up to modern Washington DC standards. Honestly, even for those great dumplings, it will be difficult to get over the feeling of this basement dining room; and (2) our two main courses were very strong, salty and without complexity. The flavors were pretty good - but too strong and not varied enough. We both got tired of our main courses because of the strong flavor that failed to deliver a mixture of seasonings and ingredients. It was all one single strong flavor and it was simply too much for a main course. How about some more vegetables or something to cut the oil flavor??? I really wanted to love my main course (the cashew chicken) but this dish was deep fried and simply did not satisfy. In total, the restaurant is a tale of 2 reviews - some good and some bad. The tofu was fried perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the outside. The secret menu you either have to ask about or if you order something and they are out they Will suggest something off of it. For desert we got the banana spring roll and lychee crème brûlée. Both were great the banana had great crunch and sweetness from the sauce. The lychee had a great crispy top and a gooey rich custard underneath that was delicious. WOW! What an incredible restaurant. The atmosphere is SO COOL. You really do feel like you are at a night street market. It is pretty loud and packed, but that's what creates such a memorable experience :) The staff actually couldn't be friendlier, and they take care of you efficiently. My experience was super mixed. The menu is very cool and different. The Thai iced tea was really good. The appetizers were pretty good. The calamari had a nice texture. The quail egg wonton was good but somewhat flavorless. I'm not sure if I'd order either again but they were good. The absolute worst thing was the pad Thai. I thought it was basically inedible. The favor was so strong and acidic and salty. There was no balance in the flavors and it was painful to eat. The spicy noodles and duck were much better but I'm not sure I'd order any of them again. The menu is cool so I would consider coming back to try other stuff. Overall, decent food for a good price. I'm not sure if I just had a bad one, but don't get the paid Thai. Sura serves food inspired by Yawoarat (Bangkok's Chinatown) and Japanese izakaya - the menu is amazing and I wanted everything. We shared the quail egg wontons, Jek Pa's dumplings, the beef skewers, the duck laab, the salmon crudo, and banana brie spring rolls. All of it was great (in fact, it was so good we added the last two dishes because we wanted more), but the laab, beef skewers, and wontons were my favorites! OMG! I wish I I had more pictures of the food, but we all jumped in and enjoyed each meal! Let's get started! Location: If we are being honest, you have one of three choices for parking. Take the metro, search for parking spots on the street, or park in a parking garage. If you wanted to save some money, you could wait until Sunday when the parking is free. However, if you park on the street, READ THE SIGNS AND USE THE PARKING METER. You run the risk of getting a ticket if you are parked in no parking zone, reserved parking zone, or have exceeded your parking time. If you use the parking meter, using the app Park Mobile is so convenient because you can pay via your card in the app and can add/pay for more time while away from your car instead of putting quarters in the meter. It may also be helpful when walking to this location to use a map because the door can be sooooooo easy to pass. Ambiance: It is a singular door and on the corner of the block. When you open the door, you will have to walk down the stairs which will lead you to the dining area (see pictures). It is so relaxing with calming, yet, vibrant music. It is also an intimate setting as well with its dim and neon lights. Food: The menu is not too long but has some decent options. For instance, my colleagues and I ordered the Son in Law eggs (fried hard boiled eggs), Jek Pa's Dumplings, Beef Horapa (non-spicy), and Special Chili Noodle (non-spicy). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF THESE FOOD OPTIONS!!! UGH...THEY ARE DELICIOUS! THE LYCHEE CRÈME BRÛLÉE IS EVEN BETTER! If only the lychee crème brûlée came in a deep dish...i would sit there and eat the whole serving by myself and with tons of blueberries. The Call 911 cocktail took me by surprise at how spicy and tangy it was. Not sure if I could taste the lemongrass. Good regardless. We got several dishes, but the crispy pork belly and duck laab (shown) were the stand-outs of the night. Since it was Thanksgiving weekend, it was pretty empty, which was great for conversations. The first thing I want to say about this place is that the staff is super friendly and nice. They made us feel welcomed and were patient because we came with a party of 7. You have to go down some stairs from the street to reach the inside of the restaurant (because it's DC), and though it might seem sketchy at first the actual restaurant is not. The decorations are fun and fit the theme so well. It's got a very slick atmosphere. I ordered the braised beef horapa and lychee collins. The dish was savoury and spicy, and the fried egg and rice complimented it very well. The cocktail could have been sweeter, but I enjoy a strong drink. For food its small plates so meant to be shared. That being said we got the quail egg wontons, the chicken himapan (comes with a side of rice) and the shrimp Kari rice. I really enjoyed the wontons. Crispy and the little quail egg in the center was different. Haven't had anything like that before. The chicken was good too but my least favorite of the night maybe. The gingko nuts were a little charred which lent a bitter taste that I was not a huge fan of. On the other hand the shrimp Kari rice was really my favorite. This just might be my new favorite Thai restaurant! My friends and I ordered the Quail Egg Wontons for the table and for my main dish, I got the Spicy Belly Rice (vegetarian version with fried tofu). The wontons were really delicious, I normally don't love hardboiled eggs but in the wontons they were great, especially with the sauce! The Spicy Belly Rice was really amazing, the tofu was fried super well and the dish had a lot of flavor. I thought the spice level was perfectly balanced with the slight sweetness of the dish, but the spice level was pretty high if you don't have a relatively high spice tolerance. With fun lighting/neon signs & a fun playlist playing in the background, they've curated an atmosphere that's both laidback enough for families or a casual happy hour but also has the sophistication of a girl's night or date night! To drink I had the Chinari Spritz! The Campari Prosecco gave the drink a fun bitterness while the passionfruit liqueur provided a nice balance with the fruity flavor. I also tried a sip of the lychee collins which I also enjoyed! The salt & pepper shrimp app was amazing! I loved the crunchiness of the outer shell of the shrimp and the spicy cilantro chili dipping sauce added a nice kick! The boneless duck laab was also super tasty & I enjoyed the citrus-y taste the lime provided to the duck & fish sauce. The beef horapa definitely is a must-order! The beef was tender and the jasmine rice was cooked to perfection. I loved the thai steak tataki salad! The steak had a tangy flavor and the presentation was beautiful (all their dishes/drinks were cohesive in presentation & looked as pretty as they tasted)! To finish, I throughly enjoyed the lychee crème brûlée. The crunchy outer shell of the sugar was so tasty against the creamy interior & the pieces of lychee meat inside was a fun surprise! Sura has such an innovative menu & you can tell they're intentional with the flavors & spices they add onto traditional Thai dishes to truly make them their own!
