Wanted to like this place but man was it just awful. Ordered the chicken and steak combo. The chicken was dried out and barely edible. The steak was dried out and tasted like beef jerky (but not in a good way). I think it was left out for most of the day as it wasn't hot by any means so definitely not freshly cooked. The teriyaki sauce wasn't hot, wasn't cold just tepid. The rice was just mush. Not fluffy rice just mush. I think they had to make a fresh cabbage salad which was the only thing that kept me from giving it a 1 star. Again I think it's because they ran out during the lunch rush and it's the only thing they made fresh. I get it. Close to 2pm end of the lunch rush but jeez this was bad. By far the worst teriyaki I've ever had and this includes the stuff they serve at college cafeterias. I paid nearly $17 for this? Won't be back. read more

I really like teriyaki, but my man LOVES teriyaki. We're from Seattle and have missed good teriyaki in every place we've lived outside of WA. Trying a new place always seems like a recipe for disappointment, until we came here. We've quickly become "semi-regulars" (shoutout to their loyalty program!) and its earned the seal of approval from my partner. What sets it apart from the less good places is that the sauce is sweeter than normal (v Seattle coded) and the meat is grilled with little char bits included! The Smell!!!! I knew I was going to have a good meal just from the smell of the grilled meats biting my nostrils and kicking my saliva glands into overdrive. Ordered on DoorDash for pick up and walked into a packed place during the lunch rush. That is always a good sign. Food was waiting for me and warm! Packaged really well and they provided two teriyaki sauce cups which was nice. They make the sauce in house. So unique! I love how you can order just rice or just salad for the sides. Had a wonderful weekday lunch with a small group of 4 at Surf Brothers Teriyaki. They have a small simple menu which I love. You can get chicken, steak, or a combo. It was my first time so I ordered a combo to try both meats. My cashier was warm and friendly and it reminded me of my many summer travels to Oahu and Maui. My food was ready within 5 minutes and was quite fresh off the grill. I asked for extra teriyaki sauce and Sriracha sauce and received a generous amount of each. The combo comes with a scoop of rice and coleslaw. Both meats were solid although I preferred the chicken more. For $16.50 I would have liked a slightly larger portion but this is Carlsbad where a half cold cut sandwich can run you $15.00. This establishment has friendly service, fresh Hawaiin food, and is close to one of my favorite golf ranges. Can't complain. The tables inside seat two but we were able to combine two of them to form a table of four. We were sure to put the tables back where they came from when they left. I'll definitely be back for another taste of Hawaii with my friends! I can tell the ownership takes pride in bringing a little bit of the island hospitality to San Diego. Mahalo! read more

I love the simplicity of this place, the menu is limited but that is fine for someone like me who likes a little bit of everything! I usually get the Chicken Bowl and it hits the spot. The only tiny complaints are the lack of sauce that is provided, but it does not cost that much to buy some extra. Also, the Dining Area is tight and right next to the kitchen so it can get a little warm in there. There is outdoor seating and lots of nice places to go nearby :) Also, they do NOT take cash which can be an inconvenience, at times and good to know in advance since we did plan to pay with cash, but I have my Apple Pay ready! read more

This is hands down my favorite teriyaki place to go! Their easy menu, quick service, and flavorful food nails it every time. They offer both chicken and steak - the steak is always cooked to a tee, soft, and flavorful. The restaurant is also so cute inside! Decorated with surf theme, they have murals adorning the walls and little birds hanging from the ceilings. My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves coming here. Not only is the food incredible, but the employees are SO nice and the service is fast. You are never waiting for more than 5 minutes and that's if there is a line! My company orders from Surf Brothers frequently. I stopped in today in person and as I walked in, a man was yelling aggressively at a customer who was talking loudly on her phone. After the woman hurried out, I witnessed your employee walk to the man's table and call your customer "crazy" and follow her to the parking lot. Despite the argument, I sat and ate my combo order and was also disappointed to find the meal cold and dry. The sauce also had a hole in it as if it had been pierced with something. When I saw they were closed (Monday), I almost left the shopping center, but the name Surf Brothers caught my attention. "Teriyaki?" I thought. What the heck, I went in to look at the menu. Here's where it got interesting... the menu has maybe three food items... chicken, beef, or both. An even more simple menu than In-N-Out Burger. Each dish comes with rice and salad, and the portion was just fine; I'm a good eater, and it filled me up. Oh, I had the chicken. My to-go order was ready before I finished paying (cards only; no cash (except for tips ) accepted). I was pretty happy, since Hyderbad's made-to-order Indian cuisine took 25 minutes the other night. Yes, it was delightful, but I was thrilled to grab-and-go tonight. My stop at Surf Bros. was quick, met with friendly/helpful staff, and the food was very fresh and tasty. Love love love! Haven't been in ages, but was in the area looking for a lunch spot for my friend and I. Honestly, it was better than I remembered. We were indecisive but Anthony was super nice while he took our order. It's also still as charming inside as I remember, all colorful and fun. We both got the combo plate, which was fantastic. The meat was perfectly juicy and the sauce was so yummy. Since the food comes out hot, I would personally prefer it to be served in a non-plastic container, but it's so good I don't even mind. It's so simple and wholesome and delicious. My go-to is the chicken with brown rice. Sometimes I double the chicken when I want a little extra protein boost. Well, Surf Brothers Teriyaki is a perfect reflection of a teriyaki restaurant I'm use to eating at. Made quickly and affordable! I really have no idea why there aren't very many teriyaki joints in California. TERIYAKI CHICKEN - comes with rice and coleslaw. And that's how I remember always receiving my teriyaki, with rice and coleslaw. I really liked the preparation of their teriyaki... chicken is grilled with nice grill marks, cute in pieces, and you can control the amount of their teriyaki sauce on your food. I judge on this execution because many places fail with prepping their chicken and dumping way too much sauce that doesn't taste good. It's nice to be able to prep the teriyaki ourselves because sometimes places add too much. I like mine where the chicken is not swimming in the sauce. It's lightly coated but flavorful and you are able to the taste the grilled protein. Each bite reminds me of my broke college student life in Seattle making the best meals out of very little funds. I ordered combination beef and chicken teriyaki, and paid to add extra chicken, with tangy cole slaw and brown rice. I am in the area on business, so I ordered this delivered this past Monday. It was so good that today (Friday), I ordered the same thing again. The rice was cooked right, and the beef and chicken meat was cooked just right, with just the right amount of char. They provide their own brand of teriyaki sauce that is also just right. I particularly like mixing the slaw with the meat, rice and teriyaki sauce. It gives a nice balance between the sweet and tangy flavors. Thats about it. at is pretty much perfect teriyaki. I've had a hard time finding great teriyaki in San Diego. There's a couple real good places. But Surf Brothers has that freshly barbecued taste and reminds me of Teriyaki I had as a kid. The meat has been tender and well seasoned each time I visit. The service is friendly and they seem to really care. It's a little restaurant, the tables were clean and neat. It isn't fancy, they just have a small menu and great food. My only wish is they would open a location in Oceanside. Perhaps in the new strip mall near Front Wave Arena. read more

I ordered extra meat and all of it together was enough for two meals. The steak is super tender and flavorful. The chicken was juicier than I was expecting.
