Heard about this place for a while and was excited to try. It absolutely lives up to all the hype!!! 95 degree day and their air conditioning was broke, that sucked but other than that the place was so good. Line was long but the food came to us so quick it made up for lack of time. The verde salsa is incredible- tangy and cilantro-y! My boyfriend and i got a shrimp taco, mahi taco and surf taco to taste and he also got a burrito. The shrimp taco personally was my favorite but all 3 were extremely falvorful, fresh and yummy. I like the cilantro sauce on the shrimp taco. The mahi taco came in second- fresh avocado on it with juicy pineapple and lime. So good!! I also love the fun and bright decor. Surf Taco is a far cry from the Baja Fish Tacos that are famous in San Diego, and I only give the entire place a 2 out of 5 for being one of the only places in NJ that has tried to tackle the "fish taco." The Baja fish taco was pretty good, but nothing to write home on a postcard about. They overuse the cabbage and not enough "white sauce." The fish seems to be fresh, but who knows...it is fried. I give it a 3 out of 5 for the taco. The tortilla chips are pretty good, but I do not think they are made in house. That warrants a 2.5 out of 5. The salsa is probably the best thing about this place. They have a regular, mild red, chipotle, and hot. They are all very delicious. The only difference between the regular and hot is the addition of jalepenos to the hot. It is not too spicey, but still pretty good. The Chipotle is really good. The perfect amount of smokiness. I give the salsa a 5 out of 5. The rice is dreadful and deserves a 0.5 out of 5. It really should get negative points. I think they use minute rice. Its just white rice, no flavor at all. Gross. The beans get a 2 out of 5. They are black beans, not much flavor and they seem to be very dry. I think they should get in to refried beans. Thats where its at. Hope this review helped! read more

I had a mahi mahi taco at another location and didn't care for it. Since I moved near Long Branch, I figure I give it a try one more. And mahi mahi again was not consistent. One was under and the other one was overseasoned (salty). Lots of hype but think people come here since there isn't a lot of fish taco establishments in NJ. Mighty fine place for tacos. Their fish/surf tacos are a good go-to. I also like their coconut and mango fish tacos as well. They also have a challenge called the "Tsunami" which is the equivalent of 2-3 huge burritos that has to be finished in under 15 minutes. If you finish it, you get your picture taken. Decent California surfer baja type tacos, but I'm more a Mexican-type taco guy. I had the cod surf taco, the top one on their list - decent fish, lots and lots of filler/cabbage, and the tortilla was a bit chewy. Yes the salsas were good, and all told it was pretty decent, but as someone who loves good tacos this was not what I'm looking for. Reviewing the menu, there are a bunch of similar light and Californian style items, so you'll likely find a variant that sounds good (mango, chicken, shrimp, fish). Definitely decent surfer atmosphere, similar to Tito's Burritos in Northern Jersey (not sure which came first) but neither are what I want from my food. read more

Whenever I'm in the area I make sure to make a trip here! There's nothing better than eating at surf taco after a long day at the beach! Especially if you go fishing and don't catch anything, coming here makes you feel better after eating their surf taco (fried cod with all the fixings). Their garlic shrimp is a great choice too! I would like to start off by saying that there is no surfing going on here. There are however Taco's. I came here on a Saturday before going to a concert at The Brighton Bar. It was a nice find and the Taco's were decent. The actual Surf Taco was decent, I can't remember what the other Taco's I had were. Nothing magical but it beats eating fast food imo. They do however have a Salsa Bar with 3 types of fresh made salsa's for you to try. I think They were mild, chipotle and verde. Not a bad spot to get a quick bite before a show. read more

Surf Taco - it's pretty much an institution here at the shore. If you live in the area, you've probably been to one at least once, or in the very least - have heard of them. This location is no different than the others I've been to, really (the Jackson one aside, which has a liquor license). The fare is "California Mexican", for those who still haven't tried it - so expect the focus to be on the veggies and salsa, with a fair bit of citrus. The meat quality has never much impressed me, and honestly could use some extra onion, cumin, garlic... *something* - it's pretty bland. This is fairly easy to fix though, since their salsa bar is fantastic; I usually end up dumping a ton of the "Baja" salsa onto whatever I get. Everything comes with tortilla chips, which are great "spoons" to scoop up the stuff that will fall out of the tacos you order (hint: they're kind of messy). I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the chips are store bought - kinda wish they had a little more of an authentic flavor. Minor nitpicking, though. Prices are a touch on the higher end, but not bad. Frankly I think I'd come here a lot more for lunch if it didn't cost me $10+, but it's still a nice treat once in a while. The service was friendly and the food came out quickly, even with a line that was nearly out the door due to the lunch rush. A nice light version of Mexican style cuisine, if you don't want to hit up Chipotle, which is like eating a tasty iron ingot. This is one of our favorite go-to places in the area for a quick yummy meal for the whole family. We probably do take out or eat in at least 1x a week here. So i've heard many good things from this place from people and finally got the chance to go during lunch. The quality of the food here can most definately be ranked evenly with baja fresh or chipotle however due to its location it costs more. I tried 3 of their specialty tacos (surf, teriyaki chicken, and garlic shrimp) of which only two were enjoyable. The surf taco, their speciailty, had 2 inches of fish and the rest was just fried stuff. And apparently each speciailty taco comes in its own basket with chips...so...i had 3 baskets with 1 taco each and chips.....annoying. Coworker got the garlic burrito which was humongous but was mostly loaded with rice and sparse amounts of shrimp... If you are gonna go, the best way to roll would be with the combos they offer. Although then you wouldn't get a lot of food and you don't get to try their speciailty tacos/burritos. Not that you'd really want to because they were mediocore at best. After unpacking for the whole weekend from our move to Long Branch, we were starving. We had been given a menu for Surf Taco by our rental agent, and after looking it over decided to give it a try. I've never had 'surf food' before, and was honestly expecting something more along the lines of typical heavy and greasy Mexican. Boy, were we mistaken! We started with chips, guac and salsa. I ordered the Maverick burrito, and my girlfriend had the Chicken Taco Salad. Their guacamole was absolutely amazing - some of the best I've had. Salsa was excellent (we had both the medium and the verde). Our meals were big enough to last 2+ meals, and darn tasty to boot. The only thing that would have made this meal perfect was a beer, which they don't sell. Needless to say, we will definitely be going back. read more

Awesome taco spot. Definitely go with their signature "surf" series: the surf taco, surf burrito, etc. I ordered the mahi mahi taco, and it was slightly disappointing as it was grilled improperly and under seasoned. But the surf taco baja style is my favorite and I end up always getting it when I go there. I think there is a big hype about Surf Taco. Many people love it and rave about it, but I personally think it's just okay. I got a beef taco when I went there last which was pretty good and pretty filling, despite my initial reaction to getting just one taco. My boyfriend wanted one too, so we ordered one. The difference between our beef tacos was that his was literally running grease/oil out of it like a faucet, and mine did not. I contacted Surf Taco corporate to let them know, and they did not get back to me. Also, a woman was denied a cup for water while we were there. I know some people abuse the water cups and use them for soda, but it seemed like the woman really just wanted that water and Surf Taco wouldn't give her a cup! I think this is pretty ridiculous and should be changed. The service there is great however. The food has always been prompt when I was there. One of the employees also came outside to take our garbage which I thought was nice, Overall, Surf Taco is good, but not great. This is a place I would come every once in a while, though I do recommend that if you're visiting in the Long Branch area that you give it a try. read more

Not bad. Not great. But a nice experience. I went to Long Branch the day before classes started at Monmouth U to help my son settle into his apartment. We visited Surf Taco for lunch based on it's local reputation. Close to the beach and a short drive/bike from MU (2 blocks from the beach, 1.2 miles from the University), it's a cozy place with 15-20 tables and a walk up counter. There are about 40 items on the menu, plus another 6 or so specials for the day. Prices are okay, a little pricey, but on par for a Jersey Shore place. The people were very friendly and the food was served quickly. They provided good sized portions. The food itself was kinda average, but the salsa (4 choices) was very good. Bottom line: Don't go out of your way to try Surf Taco. But if you're passing by and want a quick bite to eat, go for it. read more

The surf and mahi tacos were delicious. I ordered the combo and it was a decent amount of food for the money. I love that they have black beans, but their rice was sub par. It seemed like it was instant or microwave. Their tacos were still Good however, I'd just get the tacos next time. Parking is also rough, there are only 5-6 spots out front and it can be hard to find street parking. I ordered pick up and my food was ready nice and fast. I'm perplexed as to how this place is so popular. I guess it's because of the location down the street from the beach because the food is lacking. Been there twice and that was enough for me. Both times disappointed with the food. Most recently ordered a burrito with rice and beans and it was all incredibly bland. Confused how beans could be so tasteless as a can of Goya tastes better than their beans. My friend said the same about his meal ( I don't remember what he ordered). EXTREMELY RUDE! I wish I could give ZERO STARS! Due to glitches in the app as well as with online ordering, we were unable to submit a large order. We called and they agreed to let us submit our order for delivery over the phone. After completing the order, we realized they never asked for a delivery address so we called back to give our location. We were told they do not deliver and we would have to submit the order through Door Dash or UberEats (something we were not previously informed of while submitting the lengthy order). We proceeded to tell them we were unable to pick up the food and that we had no choice but to cancel the whole order. Minutes later, they had called us back (a different employee) saying do we realize we are canceling a very expensive order. He was EXTREMELY RUDE AND OUT OF LINE and proceeded to hang up on us. We get yet ANOTHER phone call saying now they are able to make the delivery as long as we pay with a CC over the phone. This was the most HORRENDOUS experience and am appalled by the employees lack of respect for paying customers. I will be in touch with corporate mangers to voice my complaint and will think twice before considering surf taco in the future. I attended a party that was catered by Surf Taco recently and let me just say, the guac/Mexican dip was wonderful. In one bite I did get a jalapeno which then caused flames to shoot out my mouth but that was my own fault. Their tortilla chips are very crispy and delicious. It's hard to stop eating them. We also had some fixings to make chicken, rice and bean tacos. The pieces of chicken were very large, almost too big but the taste was still great and it's nothing a knife couldn't fix. I didn't see the actual store but I look forward to trying some of their other stuff when I'm back in town again! read more

What's not to love about tacos?! I never order off the regular menu, I always order off of their special menu which, from what I can tell, seems to be pretty much the same whenever we go in. I forgot what they call them (Juan-something?), but I basically get carnitas with cilantro, lime juice, onion, and sour cream. So. Delicious. My girls get quesadillas, and my husband tries something different every time, and has loved everything he's ordered. read more

I am a teacher at an elementary school in Long Branch and I frequently stop at Surf Taco on my lunch break. Its location couldn't be more ideal, since I work in the neighborhood, but it is easy to get to from anywhere in the surrounding area. Surf Taco is a step up from the chains and okay for the prices they charge but don't expect outstanding Mexican food. We had quesadillas and the grilled chicken taco. The chicken was well seasoned but a bit dried out. Having a choice of four salsas to go with the chips was nice but the salsa is pretty average. The people who work at this Surf Taco are very nice which is an obvious plus! read more

The name says it all folks. Good food, good people, good vibe. You really can't go wrong here. I recommend the Surf Taco or the Chicken Teriyaki (mmm), but chances are that anything you get will be good. This is the one of three locations I've been to, the others being Belmar and Seaside Park. I have found that the staff at this one are the most friendly. Forget Chipotle and Qdoba. You will be sad you ever went there after coming to Surf Taco! read more
