Good portions and the food tastes authentic. My girlfriend is a picky eater and this is one of the places we can easily agree on.

went to try this place the other night. when we got there was some customers inside. the parking lot is small and it's a weird configuration. the lady gave us chips and salsa but the salsa was basically pico de gallo. we ordered the supreme nachos and I gotta say they were probably the worst nachos i've ever had. what a joke. Every thing thrown in, chicken was dry and all at the bottoms covered by the chips. the cheese wasn't even real shredded cheese it was literally nacho cheese you get in a can. it tasted like taco bell. barely ate any of it. for my main dish I got the steak ranchero. Definitely better than the nachos but it wasn't bad. it was decent I thought. also the inside, the pictures in the wall would fall off the wall bc it was held up by push pins. they need a remodel or something. Came here for the second time and it's a little bit of a drive. Was craving good Mexican food and this was the place to go to. The prices are reasonable and the portions are large. Probably one of the better Mexican restaurants in the central jersey area. Usually the better Spanish food is up north jersey but Jose's does not disappoint. They were super fast getting the food out to us and everyone enjoyed what they got. I ordered the ground beef burrito, it comes with a side of quac for free which is awesome because u usually have to pay for it. They also have amazing iced tea. It tastes exactly like the big containers of iced tea you get at Chinese restaurants. It's soooo goooood! If you are in the mood for Mexican and are going to the beach that day you have to stop by this place. read more

After surfing solid 4-6 feet offshore barrels in spring lake I remembered I saw a really cool looking Mexican spot called Jose's. I parked on the street. Walked in and was greeted kindly and picked my table to eat there. The lady was super duper nice and brought me chips salsa and a water. I ordered the black bean burrito. I got it with no cheese and no side of sour cream. It's hard to find Mexican food on the east coast. This burrito was a good sized and filled with everything I asked for. Highly recommend this spot if you're in the area and not in a huge group. This was middle of winter so I was for sure spoiled. Foods great and everyone was super cool! Bathroom was spotless! I really don't understand why people love this place. Went there once, food was eh. The salsa was watery, the shrimp tasted as if they were from frozen and overcooked. Nothing seemed fresh, and the place felt like it could use a deep clean. My husband wanted to try again because he figured maybe they had an "off night." We had never been to this restaurant but we heard it was very good. On Monday around noon, we walked in and someone said are you here for takeout? We said no so she said sit anywhere and brought us menus. Later, 2 men walked in and also sat at a table. A few minutes later she brought the 2 men chips & salsa. We were not brought anything. Been coming here for sometime. Our last time was around April. Food was really good so not sure why this go round it was awful. It was a to go order, a chicken and steak burrito combo and it was just the chicken. Also ordered a side of guac and chips. It was the worst guac I've ever had from there. Easily the worst food we've had in Monmouth County. From the tasteless, dishwater refried beans, to the watery Chile relleno (how a coating is water logged baffled me) to the stale chips and mostly liquid salsa...nothing was good. I have eaten from Jose's for decades and have always found the cuisine great. However, a recent experience forces me to degrade my rating. I picked up a take out order and it was clearly not properly packed. Upon arriving home, I picked up the package, the saturated bottom fell out, and i ended up with my Jose's dinner all over the upholstery of my brand new car. They must have paid for the 4 stars. The only way I'd come back is if I was waiting for my laundry in the laundromat next door. It started with the chips and "salsa". The chips were plain, no salt. What was passed off as salsa was nothing more than a bowl of diced tomatoes in lime juice. There was a hint of pepper flavor, but I had to work to find it. Ordered the Burrito San Jose. It came plain on a plate with a dollop of sour cream and bland guacamole out of a can. The inside of the burrito wasn't much better. No flavor at all. Maybe this is tailored to a New Jersey palate. We enjoyed our meal and left overstuffed. Tacos and tamales were $2 each. We believe that the waitress corrected my order, realizing that there was no way I could eat 3 tacos. The horchata was a bit powdery but very creamy and sweet. The tacos are overstuffed--you can easily fill each of the 2 soft shells with the filling, and have more left over. We each had what was supposed to be steak but tasted more like pork al pastor ( pulled pork with sauce) plus grilled pork, each served with onions and cilantro, a tad greasy. Tamale was a generous serving, topped with mole and lots of cheese. A little overcooked. Good taste though. The guacamole tasted pre-packaged, but was saved by el yucateco green, red, and chipotle. The rudest lady I have ever met. She hung up on me when I tried calling with an order. When I called back, she yelled at me for not knowing the menu number for the item I was ordering (which was a basic Mexican dish). Then I had to tell her multiple times my orders. I've never experienced that rude of a person at a restaurant to a paying customer. She set the tone of being rude. I always tip at least 20% but I did not tip anything this time because of how rude she was. I don't support rude people with my money. read more

First experience at Jose's last night. Not fully impressed, after hearing so many locals rave about it. The two dishes I ordered were COVERED in mole sauce, We did take out, and a friend placed the order so when he ordered enchiladas, he didn't realize they automatically came with mole and if you wanted regular enchilada red sauce you'd have to request it. So there went the enchiladas. Then the chicken Tamales were also COVERED in mole sauce. You could barely tell what exactly you were eating because the sauce was so over powering and slathered on everything. The rice and beans were sub par. The cheese was cheap pre shredded generic cheese. My friends enjoyed their meals, a burrito and a chimichanga. But said the food was on par with getting food from a chain like restaurant. We have been going to Jose's for about 10 years now and it continues to please. Very good Mexican food in a small casual space on route 71 along the shore. At one time they were the only show in town but now with an abundance of taco joints in the area Jose's continues to out pace them all. This speaks to the overall management of their restaurant. They have delicious soups but if you do go consider a few Mexican tacos which are plain but delicious and the best around. Also their diablo buritto is awesome. read more

Are people from this area really so sheltered that they honestly believe this is good Mexican food? I ordered "carne asada" which was a gray, tough, flavorless (inedible) slab of meat on a plate. The rice it came with was also heinously dry. I could not eat anything I was served and ended up eating chips and salsa for dinner. Marginal chips and salsa. Everyone seems to overlook the bad service for what they believe is "great" food, but since I found the food to be disgusting I cannot do the same. We waited forever for our order to be taken, and a LIFETIME to be served. So, yeah. People think that just because this place is a SHITHOLE (newspapers strewn across empty tables, family members sitting with their shoes off, feet up on chairs, dirty floors, etc. etc. etc.) that it's some sort of authentic Mexican experience. I have to agree with most people here on two levels. 1) It is a complete hole in the wall. No ambience, non-matching tables/chairs, about the size of a large master bedroom. 2) The food makes up for #1 entirely. The free pico de gallo and chips as soon as you sit is a hit. My friend and I both ordred the Diablo Burrito (a special located on the wall, not on the menu). As we are both into very spicy foods, we thought hey what the hell. I must say it brought just the right level of heat. Not enough to be overbearing but enough to ask for an additional bottle of water. The size of the burrito was massive. Just take a look at the photo gallery and you'll get an idea. It was stuffed with rice, beans, steak, cheese, tomatoes, onions and spices all for 9.95 and it was well worth it. My only other concern minus the crappy decor is the pretty poor service. It seems like they don't do much to cater to the patrons but that's fine cause I'm only there for a quick bite and don't need much service. All in all, I will definitely go back and highly recommend.
