If you are new to fishing, come here because they are friendly knowledgeable, kind and welcoming. If you are experienced, the ladies probable no more than you and can help. I recently bought a Van Staal vr150 and they switched it to bai lless at no extra charge. The reel price was actually a few bucks cheaper than amazon... which is bananas to think about. And the switch to bail less isn't easy, just read the comments under Craigs video on you tube. No brainer of a purchase. The ladies give free advice and share gossip from other fisherman on important topics: where the fish are and what they are chasing at the moment, what baits are hatching or being born. You get the feeling they have forgotten more about fishing than most know and will answer questions and provide advice. I am a real tight ass when it comes to budget. I support my wife and kids NOT local business. I shop here because their prices are fair and they add value buy helping with all sorts of questions. I don't get some of the comments about the store being pricey. Based upon what I have purchased their prices are fair. They have all the mass produced plastic lures like Daiwa with in 50 cents of walmarts price.... and surfland has a much larger selection. If you are new to fishing or unsure of what to buy Surfland has a friendly and knowledgeable staff. I walked one day and requested hooks for carp fishing... she wasn't sure what would be best, so she googled it on an ipad, used her knowledge and experience and discussed option and provided the right hook. Plus they have many small plug builders which can be dangerous if you have a PPA (plug purchasing addiction) I became a customer after fin and feather closed. Where in this "new world" we live in, can you find someone at 7:30 pm on a Tuesday night who is willing and capable of taking wire cutters to a Yo-Zuri Hydro Pencil. That lure was fixed firmly into my son's thumb. One last fish, in the dark, resulted in a deep penetration, the barb deeply nestled into said thumb. Checked out a local gem. Surfland has been around since 1960 and one trip in there I knew why. They are a bait and tackle store with a great lineup of clothing featuring their famous logo. A great selection for whatever you need. The staff was so helpful and kind. Picked up a hoodie that very comfortable and super warm. One of my favorite discoveries was my little furry friend Fin. He was so helpful in my decision purring loudly to give me his approval on my purchase. I can't wait to go back. Who would ever think a bait and tackle shop is a great experience read more

This is the best tackle shop for dozens of miles around. They have pretty much anything you need for surfcasting. The staff is just great. I mean GREAT. Helpful and pleasant. They'll really bend over backwards for you. Fresh bait, custom rods, will spool your line right there at the counter. Good reel repairs, live eels, and for a hang-out, just visit any weekend morning before 9 to meet the real old-time fishermen from the area that sit around with coffee and chat. read more

A great place to visit for all of your surf fishing needs. The staff answered all of my questions and gave me great insight on where some great fishing spots are in plum island. Well I'm a bit prejudiced since I've been getting bait, rod parts, lures, hooks, line and sinkers for about 30 years. Of course I look at other tackle shops. I'm a fishing nut. But when Surfland switches to winter hours I'm sad and I look forward to the 7 day schedule again. Great place to hang out. I wish they had a lounge and a bar. read more

Went to Surfland last summer with my boyfriend and his parents on our way back from a charter trip and the people working there were very friendly and welcoming even though we were not locals. It was fun to see the banter between the regular customers and the employees. You could tell that everyone working there really knew what they were talking about when it comes to the best bait to be using and where the best places to fish are. The bait was all really fresh and didnt stink to high heaven like some other places. I am not a master "fisherlady" but I do know the basics from fishing with my dad. I can tell when you have crap bait. They also have sweatshirts for sale that might be on the pricey side but my boyfriend got one and its super comfortable and really good quality. I guess it's true you get what you pay for. They also have pictures all over the store of people with their big catches, its cool to look at all the pictures from the 80's. There is also a cat that wanders around the store, she was really sweet and let me pet her while she was taking a little rest in the sun. I am going back to Plum Island for a week this summer and I look forward to going back to Surfland and getting my own sweatshirt and seeing the new stuff they have! read more

Expennnnnnsive. Always have fresh bait, most of the time have what your looking for but like any bait shop tend to run out quickly. Times I've gone in and had great service sparking conversations left and right and other times I've gone in and walked right out. Seems to be if your not a local you get the short end of the stick, that's just my opinion though. Overall good shop, I only go there is my other shop doesn't have what I'm looking for. read more

I always found great service with this store and most of live bait they sell is fresh. Recommend their fresh clams or fresh clam necks. Have asked twice for fresh mackerel and only found frozen, but the frozen was relatively cheap for a dozen and I'm assuming they just ran out of fresh ones. read more

The place is a little pricy but you're paying for knowledge. I purchased a reel there and it was a little more than the big box stores but I also learned a little about lure fishing from the young guy that works there. Happy with my purchase and I would shop there more often if it closer to me. read more
