I am the owner of Surfboard Trading Co, a small surf company based in Florida. I read reviews about him and offered his business terms to pay for the surfboards after a month because he seemed like an upstanding member of his community. Zapstix's owner Michael Paugh has not paid for the surfboards he is currently selling in his shop. He constantly said he was going to send payments only to disappear. Its sad because I really tried to give Mike every opportunity to do the right thing. I guess you can't do business with a good ole fashion hand shake anymore. At least with Mike you can't. I finally enjoyed checking out this store as my friend forgot to bring his swimsuit! He bought a pair of Quiksilver board shorts that were nice looking. The store is on my way to Hampton/North Beach, so it was convenient, and it was great to break up the commute with the traffic. I didn't end up getting anything, but I perused through the store, and saw a few threads from my friend's roommate's company. There were a few items I wanted, but I figured I will be there again soon to really spend time to look and try things on. They have surf lessons for $45 for an hour - includes wetsuit and board, and they also make custom boards per requests. The store is simple and lots of goods in a more cramped space. This is a fly establishment. There was a minor technical snafu in my transaction but the cat who i think is the owner was cool about it and his staff gave me free stickers for the trouble. Decent selection of boards, wetsuits, swim shorts and street apparel. Some skate stuff too. read more

Ally and Zap were super helpful and accommodating. I schedule a surf lesson on Memorial day at the shop. I live a few minutes down the road, but beach traffic was pure madness and made me late. Ally, was super helpful in accommodating my lack of punctuality, and I still manage to have a great lessons. The cost was super inexpensive, and Joey my instructor was very informative. He wen't over pure basics to advanced knowledge of surfing technique. I also bought some schwag from the shop, and the prices are very reasonable. Typical surf shops you pay a premium for brand-name gear, but they offer great sales. By the end of my lesson and day I was up on the board, and there is no better feeling. I would send any one of my friends to Zap if you want to feel the success of getting up on the board, and riding your first wave in style. Great experience and thank you! Be back to the shop soon! I took a surf lesson with a bunch of others with Zapstix and I had a lot of fun considering the conditions were less than ideal. I didn't use their wetsuit since I've got my own but they had some nice boards and have a bagel shop right next to the water which acts as astaging area for the staff, changing clothes, and getting a quick bite or drink in. The staff was great with a very chill and laid back attitude. The lesson ($30) was about an hour with plenty of practice time afterwards. There were about 7 of us with one instructor so one-on-one time was a bit short but the important thing for me was to get more practice time on the waves. read more

My girlfriend and I had our first surfing experience here and it was perfect. We took a lesson with Daniel and he was very attentive and patient. I had a very negative experience here. Zap was initially friendly and helpful, but then became uncommunicative and was ultimately openly hostile toward me. Senseless, defenseless behavior. I've been to this place a few times, Mike was very easy going and helpful in giving advice and taking into account your needs/cost. I found pretty much everything I needed, from leashes, custom boards to lessons. They also have some skateboard gear/attair.
