We accessed Survival Beach via a 2 mile trail to see the sea caves on the way. The sea caves were awesome! At the end of the trail was the beach and it was incredibly blue and clean. The waves are definitely aggressive and I wouldn't risk going further out than about 30 feet because the sand quickly changes to bedrock and you would risk getting extremely injured if swept under by a wave. read more

If you are reading this because you are thinking to go to survival beach, please allow me to share below: - You need to finish a REAL HIKE to get to the beach. - I'd rate this hike as MODERATE to DIFFICULT. As of August 2025, this hike is OVERGROWN and not clearly marked, imho. The info board says that it takes 30-min but it took us 45-min one-way. - You need to have closed toe shoes and sufficient water. I think one thing is about managing your expectations which may not be fully shown disclosed in certain tik tok videos: - The view is descent, but the waves are aggressive. - The beach is not crowded since it is a bit off the beaten path - BUT does it really worth packing two types of shoes (sportswear and beachwear), 90-min hiking in the jungle, and risks of washing away by aggressive waves. Overall, I'd NOT recommend this beach to my friends unless he/she is adventurous and physically fit. read more

Hiking to Survival Beach, while on vacation in Puerto Rico (on 04/25/2023) really was one of my favorite activities that we had planned. Getting to hike along the beach shoreline w/ the sound of waves constantly crashing in the background was so peaceful, calming, & just freakin' awesome! And the best part is when you actually reach Survival Beach....WOW! The huge rock formations located on Survival Beach are really something special (see pics/videos included in this review) Since "sharing is caring" here are a few of my Helpful Tips & FYIs, if you do decide to add a hike to Survival Beach to your itinerary: ~Parking: We parked at Surfer Beach, which has plenty of free parking spots (big open sandy beach area surrounded by beautiful & huge palm trees) and then started our hike to Survival Beach. There will be a sign at the beginning of the trailhead. ~Restrooms: no restrooms onsite at Survival Beach but there was 1 porta potty located near the beach entrance of Surfer Beach. I didn't use it so I can't speak on the actual condition of that porta potty. ~Hiking Info: I 100% agree w/ the previous reviews about wearing closed toe shoes/hiking shoes because you are climbing over overgrown trees & hiking through thick forest that does have some steep inclines in some parts of the trail. You definitely will want to have some good traction that only the right pair of shoes can provide. We did start our hike early in the morning to beat the sun & since we stayed on the trail that took us through the trees instead of climbing down to the beach shoreline to hike to Survival Beach like I've read in previous reviews, we were protected from the sun for most of our hike. This really is a great hike but it can be challenging in some spots. It took us about 40 mins to reach Survival Beach (1 way) and this is w/ us taking our time to stop & take pictures, and/or catch our breath. ~Hiking Trail Markers: The trail isn't easily marked w/ signs BUT on our hike to Survival Beach, we noticed that there were blue paint spots located on tree stumps every so often along the trail to help guide you (see pics included in this review). We visited on a Tuesday & there were hardly any other people there. We only encountered 4 other people on our hike. Not sure if this is the norm or not. Our visit to Survival Beach was one of my favorite part's of our vacation. It was about a 45 minute drive from Isabela, and parking was cramped, but we found a pretty mint spot further down the road, situated right under a coconut tree. When in PR, right? If you want to visit this beach in all its glory, get prepared for a 10 minute hike (partly shaded, but partly in the roasting sun). Do NOT try to do this hike in flip flops. Sneakers and sunscreen required. And make sure to bring plenty of water because you'll need it! The views here are amazing though, and the beach was pretty secluded. Definitely not crowded when we got there. It was worth the hike and the drive. Note: these waters are not calm. The current here is strong and the ground is rocky. You'll need to search for a sanded area if you're looking to relax in the water. This is mostly a surfer's beach. When you return, be sure to treat yourself to a giant fresh coconut cut up by one of the expert posted up there. It's a nice little reward for a hard day at the beach. read more

More hike (and hype!) than beach... I'm just going to say what nobody else seems to be saying. The hike is brutal. And I'm an avid fitness, outdoorsy type. I'm not easily deterred from a challenge. But this hike was death defying. There's no "real" defined path, so you just kind of follow your heart and hope for the best. The entire terrain is basically a tree root system that you're climbing over or crawling under. Or jagged rock climbing that will land you in the emergency room with one misstep. All 4 of my family members were bleeding from somewhere by the end of the day. After 40 minutes or so of this, you finally make it! The anticipation of sprawling white sandy beaches and sparkling blue water is finally here! And it's.....fine. Pretty? Sure. The ocean bottom is also rocky and the waves will pummel you into jagged rocks if you're not careful (just ask my 11 year old). It was no prettier than any other white sandy beach - I think the appeal is the treacherous hike means less people, so it is a quieter beach. But you can't *really* enjoy it because you know that hell hike is waiting for you on the flippity flop. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that. Now please excuse me, I have to go ice my very angry knees. read more

Spend a wonderful couple hours hiking to and exploring Survival Beach. Parked at Surfer Beach and hiked over. Good shoes are a must since there are a lot of jagged rocks and jungle branches. Not a super hard hike but definitely require some climbing. Once at the beach, it's a quiet oasis (especially during a weekday). I think there were only 4 other people there. Loved beach combing here. There are the prettiest pink shells and I found some sea glass as well. read more

Awesome!! It took us a little bit to get there since there's navy, coast guard in the same little area. We asked a local and police man how to get there which was easy once we found the road to get us down to the beach. A 10 min or so walk to get to the actual rock beach area. It was really nice and peaceful since we were the only ones there at the time. read more

If you're looking to explore and take adventure you should totally come to Survival Beach! It sure does live up to its name! We parked at Surfers Beach and hiked to Survival Beach - wear water shoes for the hike and so you could go in the water! My boyfriend, his little brother (11 years old) and I parked then followed the orange dots on the trees towards Survival Beach. The hike is a little dangerous being that we had steep hills to climb up and down. Some of the rocks were sharp as well but it was a great experience! We saw centipedes, caterpillars, lizards and iguanas! When we reached the sand the waves were very rough! We left our bag with towels on the side so we could walk under the rocks. Be careful because those waves could pull you out! On our way back we found a calm, shallow spot to sit, enjoy the beach and swim with the fish! Instead of taking the hike back we were able to walk along the shore back to Surfers Beach then back to the car. A fun adventure for "shore"! read more

Hands down haven on earth. World surfers utilizes this beach and I know why. The waves are crazy. A few days ago we saw thirty foot waves. Although you can't surf on days like this it's just amazing to look at. This morning after breakfast we went down to see the sun come up. Beautiful. Tried to weave in and out the caves but the wave were crashing and dragging me in. Best to explore the rock formations and caves at the end of the beach on clam days. Basically your on your own. Safety, safety. Deserted beaches on that side of the island. read more

We went to Puerto Rico and wanted an adventure. This was definitely worth the trip to the west side of the island. Once you arrive at Surfer's Beach, it's about a 20 minute hike from there through wooded areas. At the end of your hike, you come to one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen. It's has amazing rock formations and clear waters. There weren't many people at the beach which made it even better. If your thinking about visiting this beach, it is worth the trip. Just make sure your bring sneakers for the hike! read more
