Since my original review I've been back 2 times, each a little bit more disappointing than the next. When the same friend and I went back in February, we went on a week night for sushi. We ordered enough rolls to split but did not want to gorge ourselves so we wanted to get a to-go box after we'd already received our check. When we received the to-go box, we got another, much higher, bill. When we questioned why we received the higher bill, our server told us because we wanted a to-go box and none of the "happy hour" sushi is able to be taken home at the happy hour price. Neither my friend, nor I, knew we participated in happy hour but we went with it. It was really disappointing that they were going to throw the food away rather than let her take it home so we paid the more expensive bill. Last week, the same friend and I went back for a third time thinking now that we know there's a happy hour, we will do things correctly, order small amounts of sushi, and then get it for the reduced price. First of all, the sushi restaurant smelled very fishy, which wasn't a good sign. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and continued to order. I got the krab based rolls this time and she proceeded with sashimi. We thought everything was going well until we got the bill and noticed that the rolls were significantly higher than the prices we ordered. This time we did not order a beer with our sushi, so again, no happy hour prices. I don't think we will be back because we can't seem to understand their specials and my friend got really sick from the sushi this time. We tried 3 times and they struck out. read more

I was not very impressed with Sushi Cortaro. Their sushi was okay...nothing spectacular. Their prices are absolutely insane. For the amount of food you get the price of each dish is very inflated. My boyfriend and I ordered two bento boxes and two sushi rolls. I was expecting around $50 to $60. It was $85 dollars in total for just two of us. I was shocked to say the least. We won't be going back anytime soon unless we do the all you can eat which is about $30 per person. read more

I have to say we've enjoyed this place since we've been coming here; however today I was disappointed. It was the first time I've gotten their seaweed salad and squid salad. They are consistent, reasonably priced, have great flavor, good options for folks who don't like sushi and always greet us with a smile. One of the best in this area. We went on a busy Sat night and were seated pretty quickly. Menu is great, lots of options. We ordered 7 rolls and they came out quickly and were delicious. Then we ordered 5 more, as you do, and those came very quickly too. Sushi is generally a pricey option for teenage boys and I think this place is pretty comparable. This is by far my husband's and my favorite sushi place that offers AYCE. Even if you order from the all you can eat menu, the cut of fish does not differ from a la carte. It's always fresh and well made. The servers are friendly and Tracy is awesome. They remember you and greet you like you're family. I have been going to Sushi Cortaro since 2010, after my husband got deployed for 13 months. While he was away, I used to go once every couple of weeks or so to have a nice, quiet meal and read a book. They never rushed me and they were always eager to see if there was anything else I needed. After he returned, I brought him there and he was hooked. Since then, the establishment has gotten busier and busier. I am so glad to have gone to this once "hole in the wall" back in 2010. Some of our favorites are the salmon, yellowtail, or tuna nigiris, the Rainbow roll, the Spicy Crunchy Tuna roll, Salmon roll, the fried calamari, miso soup, and ramen. Yum! We also enjoy happy hour with sake bombs and the lunch specials. Edmame, shrimp tempura, shrimp shumai, california roll etc. All was nice, as it should be. We had never had hibachi salmon before and we tried that. I wasn't sure if hibachi style and seafood paired well, but it was really good. I also loved all the veggies served with the salmon. The portions were lot and we had quite a bit of left overs. Oh my goodness, yes! I am in love with this place. It was thanks to a friend of mine (also a Yelp fanatic over at Tivine Fitness) that this place was found. People might find this place to be questionable. It's right off the freeway. It's right in front o f a car wash. It's in a strip mall of all places. Goodness, why?! And it's way, way up north of Tucson so not so convenient for anybody in town. Literally, anybody. But it's worth the drive. What I like, in summary: 1. They offer the all you can eat sushi (AYCE) at under $21 2. The place is family-friendly (been three time and there are always little ones around) 3. The cuts are manageable -- nothing like stuffing your face with too-too large sushi 4. The service is swift and attentive 5. The variety of nigiri and rolls is expansive, specifically for Tucson 6. This is my local sushi place and it is pretty good. There are TV's on every wall which are a bit distracting if you are not interested in seeing ESPN during your meal. Sushi Cortaros' food is consistent and I enjoy the employees there. They are always quick to greet you and seat you. My favorite menu item is their treasure island, which is a raw tuna salad topped with masago, served in a martini glass. I don't think i've had an equivalent elsewhere. The treasure island it's a flavorful dish and looks pretty. During my last visit, I ordered the Chef Special spicy tuna roll topped with tuna tataki and it was a win! With the red masago on top, it is eye catching as well as tasty. They have Happy hour 3-7; with half off pricing on their most popular rolls. So if you are looking for a good sushi place this fits the bill. My only issue is that Sushi Cortaro parking can be terrible, the lot is shared with many other popular businesses; frequently you are parked so far away, you wonder if it's worth eating dinner there. read more

It's got average quality for fish in sushi but I'm very disappointed by the price point and quality of other dishes. Service has never been a problem and they've always been friendly and attentive. The location itself has nice décor and is very large. Would definitely not recommend their tempura. It's incredibly heavy breading and the opposite of what tempura is supposed to be. Also their karagge is very heavy and not done in the traditional potato starch method. For the quality of food, I'd recommend traveling to Ikkyu on Orange Grove instead or driving down to O sushi on Speedway. read more

My wife and I have recently moved out to Tucson from San Diego. Something that was really difficult for us was moving somewhere that we were not familiar with. In San Diego we knew all the best spots to eat. In particular, we had a sushi place that we would go to as much as 3-4 times a week. We would often go so much that the waitress at the establishment knew our order. We have tried a few sushi places out here and they were all mediocre. When my wife and I came to Sushi Cortaro we fell in love! We have only been once so far, but this place reminds us of the restaurant we used to go to back home. Always a good time coming to sushi cortaro. I have only tried this location, never the other one on River. The fish quality is pretty decent. I usually am a sashimi kind of person, but this place actually does rolls better. We have tried several rolls here and they all taste pretty good. I do think the rice content is a lot for me to really enjoy the fish taste, but I guess that's probably so to hold the pieces intact. The flavors are pretty standard for some of the common rolls such as rainbow, caterpillar roll. I do enjoy the garninshings and sauces that they use to enhance the taste and in my opinion the amount of sauce does not take away from the taste itself. No complaints with the service and location itself. The place is always clean. The servers are attentive, sometimes a little too much, but rather be too attentive then not paying attention at all. Absolutely love this place. I have been frequenting it for about a year or so since going there once with my sister. Both takeout and dine-in is amazing, the staff is extremely kind and efficient, and their food is very quality. I often overestimate how hungry I am because so many options look appealing lol. Highly recommend the summer roll, one of my favorites. The godzilar roll is a good one too, and their miso soup is very tasty. Kudos to the cooks who make it perfect time and time again!! Definitely a place I'd recommend for anyone visiting from out of town, or just a good restaurant in general to introduce friends & family to + anyone who might have not tried sushi before. read more

Great for the price. Came in for lunch and left satisfied! For lunch they aren't too packed, at least when we went on a Thursday, and service was good. Used to be a great place to go but alcohol is watered down, for what I can assume is to save money. New Mexico roll was missing jalapeños and soy rice paper while falling apart, yellow tail was non existent in the roll. Shrimp tempura had tails in each and every piece. Ginger salad was nauseating (which used to be our favorite), and the tuna is definitely dyed as there is no way in hell it would be that red with out it being at least $25 a roll. Definitely disappointed as this used to be our favorite spot for years. Hadn't gone in a whole sense the wife was pregnant and the first thing she wanted was sushi and wanted to go there.
