I went based on 3 reasons. 1) reviews. 2) didn't want to drive to Temecula. 3) 1st visit. Setting was quaint, the building doesn't do it justice. Service was friendly, not overly. Food was slow to come out, 1 guy behind the counter an we were the 2nd in the door. Initial round was ok, good taste but small seafood portions. 3 rounds and the portions got smaller and thinner. Overall, if money is a major concern, this place suffices but if quality am consistency is an issue, take a drive. read more

This was the last straw with this place. Been going here for a few years now and all the servers know me and what I order. The chef today was a shorter guy and no it wasn't Javier (he's awesome). Well I did the AYCE and the chef sucked. Thin slices of fish on a pound of rice. I literally looked like a small bandaid on rice lol. Also the rolls I ordered we horrible. They weren't busy just me and 2 other parties. He was slow to get the order out. Don't waste your money here drive to Menifee and do the AYCE at Sapporo Sushi, Sapporo has better quality and thick cut. Sorry but I'll make sure my friends stop going here too. I like going to all you can eat sushi places, but this one really left a bad taste in my mouth. I remember going several months back, and at the end of my visit, vowing never to come back. Some time passed, and I couldn't remember why I felt that way, so I went to have lunch the other day. After my second visit in the last 2 months, I now remember why, and I will share that with you here in this review. First off, there is a new sushi chef here now. The cuts that are now used to make the sushi are much thinner than they've been in the past, almost to the point of being laughable. The fish proportion that you get is about one-third less than the fish proportion you would usually receive from other Sushi joints. Secondly, the chef holds on to the paper after you order the food, and usually doesn't give it back until you've actually finished the course. Now, some might think that that is a good way to control waste, but when I'm paying for the food, waste is secondary to me. They already have a written policy about paying for what you didn't eat, so why do you have to hold on to the paper? Times that I went was usually early in the day, sometime between 11 a.m. and noon. Usually, there was only one to two other people in the restaurant besides myself. The most annoying thing to me was finishing a course, and waiting for the chef to return the paper so I could order again, with only one other person in the place besides me. I distinctly remember the waitress asking if everything was okay after my meal, to which I replied, " no, everything was not okay." I very quickly dropped my credit card to pay for the food, and left without another word. So, that's my experience. Unfortunately there aren't that many Sushi joints with all you can eat options here in Hemet, so for the time being, either you will have to grin and bear this horrendous service, or go to another sushi place in a nearby town. I for one, now having fully remember why I didn't like my last visit, will never return. Fortunately, now I have this review to remind me the next time I get an inkling for sushi from Sushi-Ray. read more

The good: My absolute favorite sushi place, and who would guess in a little town like Hemet? Everything is fresh and made to order. The fish quality is fantastic, buttery and perfect. Max is a great sport, buy him a beer and your rolls will be excellent. I recommend the Golden Tiger, the Hapki, the Green Green, and the Burrito as things you won't get the same anywhere else. The classics (Rainbow, Spider, etc) are also spot-on. All you can eat price is very reasonable ($26) and you can do some serious damage. Individually priced rolls are just as good, and packaged well to go. The bad: the waitresses are not awesome, and the music is sometimes distractingly loud and silly. Overall: What can I say? It's my favorite, and I'd be sad if they closed. Great for a group of friends. ideal for the all-you-can-eat crowd. read more

First of all, I'm a little biased about this place. I worked here in 2007 before I moved to Hawaii. I know first hand how clean the kitchen was kept and how fresh the food was because I was there to help clean and watched Max inspect all the fresh fish himself when it came in, and saw first hand how well the kitchen and bar staff worked to make good food. I spent a lot of my tip money ordering food to take home at the end of my shifts (probably to Max's dismay). After I moved back from Hawaii, we came back to the IE, and I STILL haven't found a Sushi place in the area that holds a candle to Max's, the only place I've been to since moving back that was just as good was over in Newport Beach, so of COURSE it was fresh. I still dream about Green Greens, my hands-down favorite roll of all (and haven't found anyone else who makes them! :( ). There are certainly off days with the food, as with all restaurants, but it's honestly the best sushi place in the IE in my opinion. read more

Here's the truth about this place, when you actually get the food, it tastes good, some of the items I ordered were not so tasty though, don't get the lobster roll, mine was fried to a crisp, the rice that is, I was eating sushi wrapped in rice crispies pretty much, awful awful dish. The salmon skin handroll was overly sweet, got a little crazy with the teriyaki sauce buddy. I would like to mention the goods: salmon sushi, baked green mussels, and the spicy scallop hand roll. I got the all you can eat meal, but it's more like all you can wait. It took way too long to get what I ordered, so by the time everything came out, I was already full, I think that's the trick. They bring you one thing at a time, waiting 10-15 mins per item, then you get full too quickly. I started eating my friend's food because I was starving waiting for my stuff to come trickling out, she did not get the all you can eat meal, the beef tepanyaki was alright, nothing spectacular, but at least she got her food. I was actually going to order a little more, but I didn't want to wait so long for it. The service was horrible, I didn't get my chopsticks, had to walk up and get it myself, the lady took my glass for a soda refill but never came back with it, it was a hot mess. I am great till I eat those hot rolls and then I'm a goner, I need to stick to cold sushi and Saki. Make sure you like the chiefs secret sauce because he puts it on several of his sushi dishes. Dumpling- 4/5 Spicy Tuna- 0/5 Crispy - 1/5 Rainbow- 3/5 The service was good, the waitress was attentive and very nice. All of the rolls were "wet"... I guess no sticky rice? Dumpling- small cube dumpling tasted fine, actually pretty good. Spicy Tuna Roll- The most unbalanced nastiest tuna roll Ive eaten. It smelled fishy and a hint of ammonia. Horrible, ate two pieces and it was just awful. The tuna was discolored and the rice was wet... Crispy Roll- nothing special, just shrimp, california roll... With spicy mayonnaise with a roll in cold tempura ... It was soggy...and one of the shrimp pieces ran clear (aka not cooked) Rainbow Rolls- This was actually done well. Wish I just ordered 3 of these. I took a friend who has taken me to several good sushi restaurants and his comment was "this place has gone to the dump" as he took a bite of his tempura vegetable that had BATTER POWDER CAKED INSIDE ! Yea thats right... Un mixed batter came out of his first bite... Its Hemet though, maybe they were testing new ways to smuggle crack... I would say 90% of their roll menu are nothing more than modified california rolls with imitation crab. Avoid this place at all cost for lunch at least. Its not good. The server was excellent and very attentive. She was alone and handled the entire restaurant by herself while they were at least two Sushi chefs and several other Cooks in the back. The sushi selection was okay but several options seemed very derivative of each other. The food was good except for the jalapeno poppers no one at our table which was a group of six cared for them. The prices were okay but as no one at our table eats large amounts the all-you-can-eat option was not very viable. Their drink selection also needs Improvement. Service was horrible. Food was good but do not expect great service especially on a Friday or Saturday night. Also, if it's your first time there- there is no explanation on how to order. My husband and I sat there about 10 minutes before we had to ASK for menu. Then we waited for another 15 to ASK to order. The waitress looked at us like we were bothering her. We used to go here every week when Max still owned the place, we enjoyed his company and therefor did not return when the place was sold. Yesterday we decided to give the new owners a shot, we were pleasantly surprised. The sushi was great, and although the menu was smaller all the rolls that we received were great. We also love that they still have the all you can eat, for us and our big group of sushi goers it's worth every penny. The service was great, sushi was made quicker than max produced it. Sushi Ray's is the best. I went for sushi and met Max the server. Max is funny, nice, helpful, & a Sushi God. I tried the Hawaiian, White Princess, Red Neck, and had Green Muscles. I was stuffed when I left. I have to say the place was a little busy but that shows you it's popular & Good.. I recommend Sushi ray for the all you can eat special. If you like good FRESH Sushi and good service then god here. It's not high class black tie. It's come as you are. The laid back atmosphere is what I liked the most. Max was my favorite and a real good friend. I did see a baby roach on my plate once though when I went there often about 10 years ago. I am still glad that the new owner offers all you can eat. I've lived in Hemet all my life and I've never bothered to give this place a shot. Definitely a hidden gem. Fresher than Hot Wok in neighboring San Jacinto. It has an All-You-Can-Eat menu and great Asian beer selection. Staff is very friendly. read more

Having come here a few times, I can say this place sits right in the middle of my personal rating system. They aren't terrible but they don't exactly scream fantastic either. I don't regret spending my money here but there is a lot left to be desired when it comes to certain things with their food. For one, their fish never really seems that fresh, so I often opt for their baked rolls which are terrific. On one side some of their menu is awesome, but others it falls flat so it really just lands right in the middle of the road. Everyone seems friendly and happy to serve which is nice. The furniture could use some updating though, it always feels like it's about to explode whenever I touch a chair or move them around. The prices they ask for is a bit much, but I feel that most people come to this location because they don't want to drive to more popular spots in Riverside or Murrieta, which I can't blame them. I know that I've come to this location because I was too lazy to drive multiple times. All in all, some menu items are fantastic, others aren't. It's really just a roll of the dice if you've never been there before. If you're not there strictly for fish though, once again their baked rolls are pretty great. read more
