I really wanted to love this place but after a lot of consideration.. it's not my cup of tea. I don't mind paying more money when it makes sense but tipping for retail + when I can find the same item for half the price elsewhere.. well, the math speaks for itself. Great shop! I love the mission of eco-friendly cleaning products, I've been searching for a new good shop since coming to LA and I think this will be my spot. I ordered gloves, a bottle brush, dish brush, and pot brushes. Gloves and dish & bottle brushes were all great. Well-made and no plastic in the brushes which I really appreciate, as other stores sometimes have a wood handle but plastic bristles. The pot brushes were unfortunately terrible. I got multiple because I use one for cleaning my sink and one for pots. Both dissolved upon contact, spraying little chunks of bristle and just generally being a nightmare. They didn't clean very well either. I will be ordering again but next time will probably skip those and look for a different solution for hard-bristled brush. I ordered local delivery, and they reached out and asked if they could ship it instead. I'm fine supporting the Postal Service. I had tipped for delivery, and they said the tip would go "to the team." Slightly weird just because I wouldn't normally tip for retail, but ok, I don't mind supporting a small sustainable business. Next time I'll opt for delivery to avoid the oddness. Again overall I had a very positive experience; any criticism is in good faith because I love this store's mission and I want to continue to support it! This store is a small business owned by a woman who is trying to improve the environment. This store is located in small shop. Parking is street parking or small fenced in lot in back. They offered delivery and will bring your order to your car during Covid lockdown. I also was impressed that they had you wash your hands when you enter the store along with requiring masks. The staff was knowledgeable and answered my numerous questions. I met the owner and manager, both were very nice. You can buy or bring your own container to fill. I needed hand soap today, so I brought a big plastic jug and filled it with lavender and tea tree hand soap. The store sells many things to help you leave less trash. I hope to be more thoughtful with my use of single use plastics. read more

We have always loved Sustain LA's environmentally friendly small business, extremely organized (and cute) shop, personable employees, and how great all of their detergents are! When it came time for our wedding, we noticed on their easy to navigate website that they had a wide variety of rental equipment that was exactly what we were looking for our wedding! We filled out what we wanted on their website and then were put in contact with Jessica who was extremely professional and helpful over email! She even let us come into the store so we could look over all of our options before we made our official selections! When it came time for the wedding, Sustain LA truly delivered and made it such a smooth process! this is a review of their atwater farmers market booth only since i haven't been to the brick and mortar spot yet. it's super convenient to be able to go to my regular farmers market and get staples like hand soap, shampoo and conditioner (EO brand). they also have laundry, dishwashing detergent, resuable straws, and more. they sell refillable glass bottles, but you can also bring your own. the only thing is the i hope their prices will go down eventually when they get more business. frankly, i normally buy less expensive products that aren't anymore toxic than EO products, so i am definitely paying quite a bit more to refill. refilling should be incentivized with lower prices. i'll still support businesses like this one as frequently as i can! read more

This review is overdue, I went to pick up an order a little after the start of the Pandemic. I bought some cleaning brushes, bath items, 2 types of cleaners and container for them and picked them up outside. I thought the owner was friendly and very professional. I know getting to zero waste is a bit impossible and we don't have to feel pressure to do every little thing. At the same time I think pitching in where we can when we can, gives us a small sense of ownership over of our actions and allows up to express our love for the environment. Let focus on what we can do rather dwell on what we cannot. There are not a lot of these types of shops around, and I wish I still lived near by so I can still support this store. I still have the brush and the glass bottle that I love a lot. I really miss this store and it's mix of house staples and unique items. Such a cute store with helpful and patient employees! It was my first time visiting, and my first step towards reducing my plastic waste. They explained everything to me and were patient when I couldn't make up my mind on which product to get! There are many choices of hand soaps, shampoos, conditioner, and body lotion here. I really like the containers they sell which are a good deal compared to what you would buy on Amazon. The price is more expensive than buying bulk soap, so I hope they can lower their prices, but I will come back when I run low again! read more

Overall it's a great concept for reducing purchase of small size of products. They have a huge variety of cleaning products (e.g. house cleaning stain/sPot cleaner, hand soap, body wash, toothpaste, even borax powders, etc) and other body products such as body lotions, facial serum/oils, cotton pads etc. I like to support these shops and be more eco-conscious. The thing is we bought most of cleaning products in huge bottles (one gallon) to reduce plastic usage. And this place basically gets the same thing and pour them in a giant glass jar and sell it with double price. It became less meaningful for me. I'm fully aware there is NO WAY to be completely zero waste. Yet, I still want to continue to try my best to be eco-friendly as much as possible. Thus, I'd love to find a place that makes their own soap and cleaning products, and perhaps come here to buy some toothpaste or deodorant. read more

I was really disappointed in this place. I usually go to their farmers market stand but haven't visited them since the onset of COVID restrictions. On their social media they made it seem like they were open again so I drove 30+ minutes to come to their store front. I can understand why they aren't allowing anyone to come in with their own containers but the lady working the store was extremely unhelpful. She wasn't willing to help me place an order and insisted on watching me scroll through their website to place an order. She then told me they wouldn't be able to fill my order before the end of the day. Visited this store for the first time today. What a quaint shop, easy to navigate, the salespeople are super polite and knowledgeable, and Irene was so helpful in giving us a tour of the store and also helping me figure out the ingredients for their shampoo. I also like that they ask you to wash your hands upon entering the store; it's thoughtful. I brought a bunch of really random-ass containers (including a glass jar, an old empty Pantene bottle from Costco, and a cardboard Tide laundry powder box) and they had no problem with it. Just tare it at the scale when you enter, write down the weight somewhere on the container, and they'll subtract it for you when you check out. Pricing-wise, they are about the same as most other sustainable, eco-friendly stores out there - comparable to places like EarthHero. I walked out with an at least 6-month supply of shampoo and at least 1-2 years' worth of sunscreen and laundry detergent, for around $75 total. They're not Costco prices for sure, but for the quality and the ethics it's really not bad in my opinion. read more

No green-washing here! These folks are darn right serious about being zero-waste without being militant about it. I knew about their pop-up shops at various local farmers' markets and some boutiques around LA, but never had the opportunity to visit. Then, Leslie (the owner), posted on the FB Zero Waste LA Group that they were to have a permanent location in Highland Park. I got super excited, especially as I am also serious about trying to live a zero-waste lifestyle. However, one does not need to be a serious zero-waster to shop at Sustain LA. This shop's specialty focuses on bulk cleaning products for the home and body, not homebodies, though you can be a homeboy or homegirl to shop at Sustain LA. What's really great is that you can bring your own clean containers (they don't need to be all fancy pants, either!) to fill up with items such as shampoo, conditioner, vinegar, baking powder, laundry detergent, and I can go on and on. There are easy to follow instructions written on the wall. And if you don't have your own containers, they sell some very nice ones here. Besides bulk goods, they also have items like metal straws, metal food containers, bamboo to-go flatware, so you can always be well-armed when eating out! They also have great items for personal hygiene. One such item are their toothbrushes. And you know how bamboo toothbrushes are all the rave, but they are made in China AND come in plastic packaging, even at some "Earth-friendly" stores? Well, their bamboo toothbrushes come in a cardboard box, are made in the USA and come from sustainable bamboo forests in China. They even have refillable silk dental floss! A big plus is how they are making an effort to cater my Spanish speaking hermanas and hermanos in the to HP barrio (aka, neighborhood), with Spanish translations on the outside of the store and all over in the inside of the store. Gracias! However, I still wonder if the Spanish speaking population in the neighborhood are making it into the store. Hmm, will have to ask Leslie... And, in the near future, Leslie plans to have some workshops in teaching others some serious skills about making zero-waste products and how to live the zero-waste lifestyle. So, down with plastics! My new go-to in the neighborhood! They make it so easy to live a life with as much reduced waste as possible. I love using the refill station for body wash, hand soap, detergent and more. And they have so many cute product alternatives that you wouldn't even realize are wasteful until you see what they have to offer. The owners and team are super knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. This was my first time here. I'm a little sad that I did not get to have the whole experience of shopping indoors. But that'll have to wait till COVID19 is over! Items were easy to purchase on their online website. I was told my order would be ready earlier than my assigned pick up time, which was great because I was idling. When you arrive, you turn into the alleyway of the building and there should be a parking lot. You pick a spot to park and call the store to let them know you're here. Look, I want to love this place. Ive come here to get my body wash and other things but the fact that a tip option pops up when checking out is enough to make me look for other places to purchase from. The workers are friendly but are they providing me a service? No. I tip at sit down restaurants, takeout and coffee shops but at a store where the workers just tell you the total? Absolutely not. The owners should remove the option to tip and raise the workers wages instead. They should be ashamed of playing on peoples social anxiety. The first time I came here, I was so shocked that a tip screen popped up while I was talking to the nice worker and I felt bad hitting the no tip option so I tipped but what exactly did I tip for?? The worker was telling me about the deodorant they carry. Does that warrant a tip? No. So I basically just tipped the worker for saying 2 sentences to me. I left feeling scammed. Love the concept but the truth is that it's pricey and cost-prohibitive which makes it hard to sustain in L.A. (see what I did there?) I thought the point of shopping at refill stores is for the purpose of creating low-waste which by extension saves money? Well, that's not always the case. The owner purchases directly from companies and fills the bottles and jars with the products. While there's nothing inherently wrong with that, not everyone can use just any brand of soap, shampoo, conditioner and face wash. Some people like myself have specific (eg allergies, sensitivities...etc) needs. She sells bulk EO shampoo & conditioner and they didn't work for me. The laundry detergent I bought was super expensive! I paid $64 for 114 oz. of free & clear detergent. Granted it took me about a year and a half to finish it but in the end I decided to just buy directly from the manufacturer to save money. I was able to buy four boxes, each at 112 oz. for $54 with free shipping. Also note: zero-waste doesn't really exist bc let's face it, even refill shops and bulk stores create waste that we don't see. As much I love doing the right thing for the earth and being a conscious consumer while supporting small businesses, there are times when I have to make a decision to go where I feel is more economical for me. That being said, I think this store is wonderful but I will be choosy on what is worth purchasing. I like that they go to the Atwater and Hollywood FM. Check their events calendar to see when they have a booth. It's not a weekly thing. Or you can always stop by the store. read more

When I first entered this store, it felt like an oasis of calm and clean. I purchased many items including dishwashing liquid, hand soap and reusable appliances. Not surprisingly, the bulk items cost much more than I expected, even though theoretically they should be less since you're not buying the plastic container. Nevertheless, I was happy with my purchase. On my second trip I refilled an $8 Trader Joe's three liter laundry bottle only to discover that it cost $48!! I was reassured that this was because it's highly concentrated, so I paid for that as well. But the $7 silk floss I bought tore constantly so I brought that back for a refund/credit. But the owner refused to give it to me even though I had spent well over $100 there and was planning on spending much more in the coming year. As a result, I will NEVER return to Sustain and the owner's greed around that $7 lost her a loyal and frequent customer. I recommend visiting a nearby but lower priced and more customer-centric store called No Tox Life Zero Waste Refill Store. read more

I have a few friends who have been raving about this place for a while now. Realizing I was about to be out of shampoo and hand soap, I decided to check it out. The salesperson was very, very helpful - gave me the lowdown on how it all worked and answered all of my questions about products and ingredients. I was prepared to have some sticker shock, since going 'green' often involves spending more green, but the bulk hand soap and toner I bought wasn't really any different, cost-wise, than what I normally buy at the store (and I'm not a fancy product person). My only gripe is that the only brand of shampoo bars that they sell are in boxes, where it would have been nice to see them package-free. But otherwise, pretty awesome experience - I'm glad that shops like this are becoming more common! read more

I absolutely love that this store exists. It's basically the Package-Free Shop of the west coast. If doing re-fills and bulk shopping intimidates you, this is the place to go. The staff are helpful and patient, there are glasses and containers galore to get started with as well as a large step-by-step instructions on the wall. They continue to fill out this store with alternative bathroom/kitchen/travel/baking/ items to support zero waste / low impact living. Although the ideal is that things are supposed to be cheaper since you aren't purchasing the packaging, the prices here seem to run high on my final total. Even though I've found it to be more on the expensive side...it's a worthy purchase. For example, over the holidays, I went back to my parents house and ended up having to do laundry at their place. I used their Tide detergent and wound up with irritated, itchy skin and a not-so-subtle chemical smell lingering on my clothes. Fast forward, I realized the refills I have been using from Sustain LA are not only eco conscious, they are also high-quality products made with clean ingredients. If you can get a product that does the same job in a more healthy, clean, and sustainable way, what more can you ask? Pro tip - There's parking in the back, took me three trips to figure that out. Please be aware that if your container is not perfectly clean and dry, they will not refill it "due to Covid". How does a little left over soap at the bottom of a container spread covid? Naturally, I was immediately directed to their for-purchase containers. I had waited in line for a half hour to get in. But no effort was made to find another way to resolve the situation. All the salesperson could chirp was due to covid, due to covid. Such an obvious attempt at a money grab, using the disease as cover, is not the type of approach you would expect from a store advertising its ethics. read more

Great addition to the neighborhood. I always knew that buying new soap/detergent/whatever, each in a new plastic container, was wasteful. I just needed a nudge to start doing it differently. So when this place opened a few doors down from La Tropicana, where I shop a couple of times a week, I finally took the leap. So far I'm only getting dish soap from them (in a nice sturdy dispenser, which I refill from a larger jug), but to that I will soon be adding: laundry detergent, bath soap, white vinegar, and more. With a place like this, run by real friendly folks, there's no excuse not to go the bulk refill route. It's good for the environment, and your wallet. read more

Heard about this place from a friend and it proved too darling of a shop. So many things to help you reduce waste. The staff was friendly, eager, and knowledgeable without being pushy.
