Luckily, the previous owner of the home had kept cans of paint (and labeled them by room!) from the last time the house had been spruced up. I grabbed the can for the room needing some love and headed to my local Porter Paints to get what I needed. The store itself, located at the corner of Breckenridge Ln and Willis Ave, is clean, well-organized, and a great place to find home improvement inspiration. While not as large as a home improvement megastore, the location had everything you might need to give your home a professional-looking paint job. The staff was very friendly, and - using the can I had brought in - were able to match the paint I bought to the can the previous owner had left. It took just about 2 minutes for my can of paint to be ready and for me to be back on my way to improving the look of my home.

They then gave me space to get down to the business of examining paint swatches. Based on the discussions I heard while in the store, I think that a lot of professional painters and designers use Dages. The people working there are helpful and very knowledgable, but not at all pushy. They spoke to their regulars like friends, which I loved. Dages has a full range of equipment, paint types, and colors to fit any DIY or commercial endeavor. The staff are cool and I wouldn't hesitate asking them any question I had about a project. FIRST...the main entrance is in the back of the building, where the majority of the parking is located. This business is located right next to Five Guys on Shelbyville Rd in the St Matthews area. I prefer shopping locally owned businesses whenever possible and the staff here have always been super helpful. Today I ventured in to procure some Calcium Chloride Ice Melt, of which they were out of stock (like most of the country right now), but Dustin opened a bag of Magnesium Chloride Ice Melt for me, so I could see the size of the pellets, and then he helped me empty that opened bag into a container I keep in my vehicle just for ice melt. He then helped me place more bags into my vehicle, all of this before I even paid for the products. The prices are typically better than big box stores as well. We went inside the store and I paid for the items, and Dustin was very pleasant and kind the entire time he assisted me. At big box stores you just cannot receive this kind of personal assistance that locally owned stores offer. Kudos to Dustin for being so helpful!

The condition of the prior stain was really bad - highly weathered and uneven. Plus a dog had scratch parts of the door and prior painters splattered stain on the fixtures and frame. Kelly, the painter, spent a several days sanding to remove imperfections, meticulously staining, and restoring the door. He took great care to make sure the work area was clean, hardware installed properly, and that we were happy with the final job. All in all, it was a great job at a reasonable price

The store's owner, Sandra, is so approachable, and you can tell she's passionate about this. Alas, I have not yet had a need for their building products. But I have purchased several of the gift items they have in the store -- another reason to check it out! Honest Home carries this fun line of cards with cut-out birds to be used in mobiles. It also has kits to build your own toys, and for Christmas, I particularly admired the ornaments and wood veneer Christmas tree garland. The store gets the veneer scraps from manufacturers, and it would have otherwise been thrown out. Honest Home brings its green mission to Christmas trees as well. And for home products, I've noticed that they carry recycled rugs, compost bins, flooring and countertops, lighting, cleaning products and paint. I am hoping to buy a home soon, so I'm looking forward to getting some green supplies to make over my new home. I'm holding out on the fifth star until then. I'm sure I'll continue to be impressed by Honest Home.
