When we decided not to list our son for a heart transplant, he made it clear he totally respected our decision and jumped right in with other medical treatment options. Even when things looked really grim, he remained optimistic, without negating how hard things were. He's helped us feel empowered and is very flexible in terms of trying things we want to try and explaining why he thinks different options might be useful or not useful. He has a great sense of humor, relaxed and kind bedside manner and is very approachable. We love Dr. Hunkypants, as we call him in our house :-)

He has had to explain the same thing to us a number of times, but never rushes or gets frustrated with us. (Or if he does get frustrated, he doesn't show it!) He cares for our daughter with unmatched compassion and love. His bedside manner is wonderful. He makes all of us feel at peace. Every time something would go "wrong" we would feel so much better within 10 minutes of talking to Dr. Rosenfeld because he always had it under control and had a plan. He is always reachable and available to address any concern - big or small. What better recommendation that to say we trust him with our daughter's fragile life. Let's face it. The holiday season is upon us and unless you're really ill, who wants to spend even…read morean hour in your doc's office? A trip there often promotes anxiety and fear. I'm different! I always have a good time with my docs but then again, I've tons of medical issues. My secret is I have a sure fire way of bonding with my docs! My heart was due for an annual check and Dr. Patrick Kevlin, a renowned cardiologist in Santa Rosa, was a superb choice although I'm not saying he's the world's best! If you suspect your heart is 'mal- ticking' or if you feel any discomforts or pains, go see him in a heartbeat (or dial 911 or pop into the nearest ER in an emergency)! Dr. Devlin's front office was decked, like in my fireplace, with Santa's stockings one for each staff. The front receptionists were warm and welcoming. 3 pm appointment meant 3 pm. No wait time wasted unlike some restaurants! Olga, the Medical Assistant, did the routine pre-checking: Weight....oops!; Temperature....checked; Oximeter reading....perfect; Pulse......acceptable; BP....like a 21 year old! Then walked in Dr. Devlin and he went straight down to biz. The tick-tocks of my heart were unmistakable and audible albeit irregular. (Atrial fibrillation is the doc's mumbo jumbo for this condition, so high sounding and intimidating!). This condition shouldn't be ignored as it can lead to a fatal blood clot in your lungs or brain. I have a list of my current meds and he went through the contraindications of each one with a fine toothcomb almost like Sherlock Holmes in his magnifying glass. It almost seemed like he was rewarded for his efforts when he stumbled into 2 different pills that I take simultaneously. "These 2 meds are essentially the same and you shouldn't be taking both at the same time!" "Back off on one!" Yessiree Doc! He didn't see a problem with the results of my last EKG (Electrocardiogram) presented in sheets of graph paper. This would help the doc detect and predict future heart problems. Reading between the lines, I think he meant something else might kill me first before my heart. Dr Devlin is a soft-spoken man who was intense when he needed. Then he relaxed and exhibited great bedside manners. He took his time to speak slowly and lucidly but best of all, he allowed me time to ask my questions. I love his relaxed demeanor and I was impressed by his unassuming professionalism, infectious optimism and his genuine concern for his patients. Going out to celebrate to my heart's content tonight in spite of my dismal results last week on my other illness! In the meantime, my ticker ticks well as certified by Dr. Devlin!

For overall satisfaction, I would give him a 3 except that he is very nice, I think he has…read moreextensive knowledge within the conventional sphere of cardiology and I suspect he is an excellent surgeon. So he gets an extra point for social skills and expertise. If you have atherosclerosis or some other common heart condition, he may well save your life, at least in the short run, and have great success even over the long term. He may also have saved my partner's life when his heart was seriously fibrillating, though I think an earlier doctor at the hospital really gets the credit as being the one on duty first. If you want to try out alternative medicine, he is not your man (though he seems to have nothing against taking extra CoQ10, magnesium and d-ribose if you think of it yourself). Also, he does not seek out root causes that may be outside the field of cardiology, such as possible causes for lone atrial fibrillation (which according to my unprofessional research of publications could be due to B1 deficiency - in the US most likely caused by alcoholism, or Lyme disease, thyroid or other glandular problems, diabetes, or something else.) I give our case as an example. Lone atrial fibrillation is our issue. It may not be yours. Expect prescription heart-related drugs. Do your own homework about side effects. He did not seem helpful when we raised concerns about long-term side effects. When we talked about warfarin a couple of years ago, he did not discuss the pros and cons of warfarin versus other anti-coagulants, but just tried to scare the patient into continuing warfarin. I feel this is negligent. There are alternatives, including at least two other prescription drugs. Perhaps insurance won't pay for them, but that is no reason to withhold information about them. (Insurance or economic conditions for the patient may change, after all. Warfarin is a Vitamin K2 antagonist and as such can cause osteoporosis, by the way. Other heart medicine may also cause osteoporosis. Dr. Bowden is not concerned. I am. It would make logical sense to monitor bone density over time. Nobody is doing that.) Regarding atrial fib, his only explanation was that in this case it was probably caused by a virus, and if you went looking for it, it would be gone by now. In my humble opinion, settling too quickly on that as an explanation fails to rule out other causes, thereby potentially missing something very important. (Though to be fair, a prior blood test did not suggest thyroid problems, so we can probably rule that one out.) He is assuming the cause is now gone, and only the atrial fibrillation remains. I am not so sure the initial cause is gone. I know the patient. He has other problems that have not been addressed (including possible Lyme disease - given the number of tick bites he has had, sometimes while sleeping, so the ticks were on him for hours, not minutes) and if they are not the cause of the atrial fib, they most likely contribute to his overall ill health, including adversely affecting the atrial fib. Unfortunately, the patient cannot afford to pay for any tests that his conventional docs do not think to do. All in all, if I had to have a cardiologist in an emergency, I would not be worried if Dr. Bowden was assigned to me at the hospital. For long-term care, though, I would look beyond Dr. Bowden. His may be focusing too narrowly within his specialty.

She entered the room with visible irritation, offered no greeting of substance, and spoke to me with the weary impatience of someone forced to endure an unwanted obligation. Each attempt I made to explain my concerns or medical history was met with sighs, interruptions, and an unmistakable air of disdain. The examination itself was perfunctory--one cursory pass with a stethoscope, a few perfunctory remarks, and she was gone. The entire interaction lasted only minutes, yet my insurance was billed close to $1,000. There was no inquiry, no empathy, no sense of responsibility toward the patient before her. What should have been a moment of care felt more like a business transaction stripped of all humanity. I left feeling belittled, dismissed, and ashamed for having expected decency. If your hope is to find a physician who listens, explains, or treats you as more than a billing opportunity, I would strongly advise seeking care elsewhere.
