Not my favorite venue to go to see live theatre in the Sacramento area. The seats are uncomfortable and very tight, theater runs very warm.

My daughter, granddaughter and I attended "Murder on the Orient Express" at the Sutter Street Theater last weekend. I recommend it highly. The acting was exceptional (Mike Jimena killed it as the dead body), and the sets, for such a small space, were excellent. The play, though a bit abridged, stayed true to Christie's story. It's community theater at its best. This venue is personal and charming, and we are fortunate to have it in Folsom. My granddaughter is now hooked on both local theater and Agatha Christie, the best endorsement. read more

Sorry but this theatre was a horrible experience for Haunted Houses. I feel bad bc the actors are just kids but the script was dull and hard to follow, the acting was empty, they pretended to have props, and the story was not interesting. Worst of all the carpets under my chair were SOAKED with liquid to the point i could push liquid to the edge and that liquid was red tinged. I asked around and a friend said she was at the restaurant next door and saw a massacre show happening there. Why were the carpets soaked??!! I was grossed out at the fact that the bottom of my shoes were touching this stuff. The chairs are uncomfortable, the environment of this small theatre is not welcoming. I will not be returning. Been to other events here and they were great! I do not live in the area so I travel over 100 miles and have to get a hotel room to go to your events. The production of Young Frankenstein was wonderful, so I was really excited to see Evil Dead. When I purchased tickets I was told the only available seats were in the splash zone. I said oh really, and the lady said oh it's only water you might get a little wet. So I pay $70 for 2 tickets and $200 for a hotel room. What I saw of the play was entertaining enough, but getting drenched in red jello gunk was not. I mean literally everything was drenched. I was completely soaked in stuff that ruined my leather shoes, my phone, ect. I even paid $30 for a tshirt so mine would not get ruined. Well that didn't stop me from getting utterly wet and sticky. Ok, this was not a splash of water! They REALLY need to let people know their belongings will get ruined, and that old clothing or plastic covers are suggested! It's funny, I get it, but buying a new phone the next day, as it is required to have one for my job is not funny it is blatant disregard for their customers! Again, nothing was posted warning people to leave phones or valuables at home or That they would be better off wearing a bathing suit. REALLY disappointed, and can't go back due to this experience! read more

I've always loved the intimate theater experience, but The Best Man was just ugh. The acting wasn't that great, and the storyline just felt so old and dated. The humor was flat. The laughs were few and far between, nothing was that funny or engaging. Sorry guys! I look forward to the next show, hopefully it's not set in the politics of the 1950s. It was so irrelevant to the politics of today it was jarring. read more

A unique experience. Great productions. My in laws were in town and luckily we were able to get same day tickets to And Then There Were None.. It was an intimate setting. Loved the live performances. One thing I wish was different was that it started earlier. Show started at 8 and ended little past 11pm.. I might of closed my eyes for 2 minutes but heard all the lines lol. read more

Took a friend and our girls to the Matilda show and it was amazing! The girls (ages 6) had such a great time and loved watching the actors performing. The actors were impeccable and blew us away. They really put their hearts and souls into the performance and you could tell. They had a little concession area to get some goodies for the kids so that was even an added bonus! Our only complaint was that it was SO hot in the theater. We were sweating so that made it a little unenjoyable. We will be going back for another performance for sure! read more

Humble little (teeny!) theatre on Sutter Street. I've been twice, both times to see Evil Dead the Musical during Halloween season. The first time, my buddy Elio starred in it as Ash (2011 & 2012), and this year he directed the show! Purchasing tickets online wasn't much hassle, but shows do sell out fast due to limited number of seats. For Evil Dead the first three rows are considered the "splatter zone" so select those seats at your own risk, if you dare. What's a little fake blood anyway? Familiar faces in the cast from other local productions (Light Opera of Sacramento, Green Valley Theater Company, and The Alternative Arts Collective, to name a few) which isn't too much of a surprise. Talented folks around here! Folsom Blvd exit and down a ways to Sutter St ramp. Parking wasn't too bad either, turned off Sutter onto Wool for the lot behind the antique shops and such. Old historic Folsom is quaint to walk and patronize the theatre shows, but I honestly did feel a wee bit in the minority if you know what I mean... Seats comfy, complimentary wine, raffle prizes. I don't believe the actors were mic'ed since the space was so small. Mad props to the one-man-band which was essentially their "orchestra"! Evil Dead is as campy, cussy, over-the-top and groovy as you might remember the movies to be. Don't bring the kids. Runs through Halloween's midnight performance. read more

Our first time attending a live event at this venue and it was delightful. They had free refreshments and plentiful seating. Halloween night 2019 was my 1st time attending the Sutter Street Theatre and my first time seeing Evil Dead the Musical.....and wow were we impressed! The musical is a comedy and the actors were so committed to roles. The singing was very good. I highly recommend sitting in the front 3 rows "Splatter Zone" you will leave wet with "blood like" liquid all over . We are looking forward to more shows there and especially Evil Dead again next year. read more

We came here to see our friend Rick in Guys and Dolls. It was great we bought tickets last minute on line and bought the 6 pack which gave us an extra ticket for free. I had no idea the theater was so tiny. I think it holds 80 people. The cast was huge and entertaining. I love seeing so many people on stage milling around. We were in the 2nd row and it was great. My friend could hear and we didn't miss a thing. The group is non-profit and pull from the community. MY girlfriend recognized a girl from her son's school. It's so fun to see something you know. Rick is great as always, we loved his expressions. He's a fantastic actor. This was our first time seeing him in an adult production. He is usually is in the B Street Children's series. Parking is tricky, but we lucked out and someone must have just left. They do let you drop off and pick up in front for those that might find walking the bumpy walkway and slope a challenge. The bathroom has the funniest/creepiest sign. As you wait you read you are on camera. We just crossed our fingers that was for the waiting area only so they can watch us do the potty dance. There is only 2 potties so there was always a line. Prior to the show they tell you a little about the theater, she tells you her husband the stage manager or something will be the one with a guy. They have been a part of this theater forever and are very dedicated. She also informs you that at intermission you can walk down to the candy shop and get candy and ice cream and bring it back to your seat. That got all us all excited, but by the time we got there they were closed. That was really sad. The really nice bar across the street sent me to the smoke shop for to-go drinks. I was shocked at the great deals. They were either 2 for $1 or 1.20 each. I got what I needed and went back. As people saw me coming they looked at me in ah and I pointed them the way. They were very friendly. You have to overlook the smoke, due to it's a smoke shop and you are the one that walked into their territory. It was really hot in the theater due to it was a full audience. I think in the fall when its cooler outside it will be better. This theater has lots of big shows. I can't believe the productions they put on. Most companies just have a few cast members to keep the costs low. This one has a gigantic cast. I love it. I will come back. read more

I have been hearing about this theater company for years and was VERY excited to go since I have several friends that perform there on a regular basis..... but..... I was very disappointed. First off, the show (The Producers) was really great....but the theater was NOT. Lets start with the Cons: -NO AIR CONDITIONING. -No air conditioning -No air conditioning (did i say no air conditioning!?) What is up with that!!?? I paid $25 for a ticket and it was well over 100 degrees outside. Everyone was fanning themselves with their programs and the actors were sweating like crazy because it was, well...VERY hot in there. That is pretty much a deal breaker for me. -It is a VERY small venue (like a small coffee shop small) and so the acting is a little more in -your-face. -The seats are less than comfortable, especially if you are a "fluffier" person. :) PROS: -It is located on Sutter street which is a very cute street in Folsom -They offer complimentary wine -The owner is really sweet and nice -They sell some snacks/drinks and will allow you to bring in snacks/drinks. As long as it is Summer, I will not be coming back to this theater. IF they get the A/C fixed, i may consider coming back or i will only attend shows in Winter. It is a real bummer because i LOVE local theater companies and watching shows that my friends are in. read more

What a quaint little theatre... my wife and I went to see Footloose and enjoyed the production very much. We're new to Rocklin, so we were looking for something to do on a date night. We didn't know what to expect. I certainly didn't expect a cast completely comprised of youth, but that's what we got. The kids were great! I was a little worried initially, but once things got going I bought the roles hook, line, and sinker! I would recommend visiting this venue for a date night or a family outing. We plan to take the kids to a matinee in the not too distant future. read more

My wife and I attended our first play, Straight Camp, at Sutter Street theatre yesterday. Wow, just wow! Great show... both the acting and the singing. The show is a tad long at three hours, but the pace is fast moving, and we didn't get the least bit bored. The cast delights in every way, and the dialogue was hilarious. On our way out of the theatre, we passed by the cast who were assembled on the sidewalk out front. I wanted to commend them on a great performance, so thinking on my feet, I blurted out "Crazy Fuc...g Good". While that phrase my not have been PC, truer words were never spoken. Top notch entertainment in an intimate (small) venue by an amazing cast who hit it out of the park. We're going over our calendar right now to make plans for future shows. read more

Wow. I am beyond impressed! Originally, I was looking for any local plays that were showing around this time. I'm in an Introduction to Theatre class at, and we get extra credit for attending local plays in the Sacramento area. I saw this "Arsenic & Old Lace" show, and I bought two tickets for it (I took my grandma with me). The intimacy of this small, personal theatre is incredible. The show was very well-done, and the actors/actresses were awesome. You can tell that there is a lot of time and energy put into the plays, and they really care about the audience. Oh, and how could I forget... THEY SERVED COMPLIMENTARY WINE!!! I'm so bummed I had never been here before. I should have started attending shows here a long time ago. Well, my wife and I love live theatre. Especially the smaller places where everything seems to be going on around you. We tried the Sutter Street Theater for The Never Ending Story. We left at the intermission and did not return. The place is historic (old) but that gives it character. And the staff try the best they can. Those are the reasons for the two stars. The lacking of the other three are for the following. In order to check in or buy tickets you have to enter the theatre and stand in line in the very narrow aisle. It is the only place inside to accomplish this task but could be done outside more effectively. There is no stage. Everything is done on floor level. I am a traditionalist. A theatre must have a stage. The old Woodland Opera House has a stage, albeit a small one but still a stage. Looking up at the elevated actor sets them apart from the audience and creates the world the story is set in. Due to the extremely small area the actors have to work with almost puts the audience inside the arena. We sat in the front row, big mistake. The actors kept bumping into me and my wife. There was one instance when the lights were turned off and the actors were to clear out. Very hard to do in darkness and one ended up plowing right into me and falling into the aisle. We left after that. We tried it and left. The place is not for us. It may be for you. However we will not be returning. read more

Went here for the first time to see the opening night of "Cabaret." AMAZING!!!! Love the size and intimacy of this little theatre. Prices are very reasonable. Everyone seems to have a great view. Pianist played perfectly throughout the ENTIRE production - WOW! Mark Ettensohn was incredible as the Emcee. I can't say enough good things about this production. Three of us attended the showing of "Spelling Bee" on Saturday 7/14/18. The theatre was sweltering hot. We were given the explanation that the theatre is in a 150 year old building so the A/C isn't very good. That was an understatement--the A/C was non-existent. We in fact left at intermission and never saw the last half of the play due to the discomfort of the temperature. As far as the play itself went--it was pretty darn good. Funny jokes, great singing voices. I would have enjoyed it if it were not for the excessive heat and lack of A/C. read more

I'm a fan of Mr. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien so when I found out that the Sutter Street Theatre was putting on "The Hobbit" play, I had to purchase tickets and drive all the way here from South Sacramento. If you're from the Sacramento area like me and isn't very familiar with Folsom, don't make the same mistake I made when turning into Sutter Street to look for this small theatre. I totally zoomed passed the parking garage. All cars can park there free and there are plenty of room. Look out for the huge construction made of red bricks. At the beginning (or end) for the street, depending on which direction you're coming from. You're probably not going to find parking along the streets, although it may be possible. The walk from the garage to the theatre isn't at all painful, even for an out of shape person like myself; so I trust that you'll also be fine. My show started at 1PM. I took off an hour ahead of time and was still 15+ minutes late thanks to the struggle for parking. Not only that, but the Sutter Street Theatre wasn't exactly easy for me to spot. The whole street is very comparable to Old Sacramento. Little shops everywhere and it's pretty lively. I love the feel of it. I had to stop and ask a kind stranger for help on finding the theatre. She directed me to where it was and I could see how I had driven passed it twice and walked passed it twice. The doors were closed. There was really nobody out front nearby to show signs indicating that this was the place. I was horrified upon arrival to find a sign on the door saying to not disturb because the play was going on. There was nobody standing by it. I could clearly hear the scene playing out from outside of the door and assumed that the actors may be right by the door and did not want to intrude. I desperately wanted to see this show so I tried calling the theatre. And calling. And calling...It went to voicemail a couple of times, but I did not give up. I kept trying and my persistence paid off because a lady finally answered and before I could say much, the door I was standing by slowly crept open. The lady on the phone came out and gestured for me to come right on in. She told me I could sit wherever although there was apparently arranged seating. The set up of this theatre is a very small end stage with audience on only one side of the show, and that is directly in front of the stage that's been raised. I found out during intermission that I had a front row seat. The same lady that opened the door for me was apparently the one in charge. She told me during the break that I could sit at my assigned seat if I choose to. I did. Being as blind as a bat, I'd never turn down a seat at the front. Very small theatre, but the cast of "The Hobbit" was incredible. They worked with what they had and did it very well. Cozy theatre and it was very comfortable to be in. I was impressed with the whole thing and would definitely come back. read more

Even when he gets to see shows that his friends are in he is treated warmly and it feels like family. We've been subscribers to SST for years. We love the small intimate feel of the productions. Connie and Mike are the driving force behind everything that goes on here - from directing and acting, children's theatre and workshops, stage production, and fundraising to manning the ticket booth, selling raffle tix, and pouring the wine. There is nothing "little" about the way they go about mounting productions. Oh, no. They go at it hammer and tongs. And it shows, with very high production values. Mike states that some 15,000 theatre-goers have passed through the hall. Hey, they have to be doing something right. We patronize other dandy first-rate theatre venues in the Sacto area. But none can compare to the warm intimate atmosphere one feels at a performance at Sutter Street Theatre. GO! You'll love it, too. read more

We went for the first time last Saturday to watch Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens. The theatre was small and intimate, it has a nice feel to it. The staff and cast (who may also be the staff) are lovely, you can tell they enjoy being there and they take a lot of pride in their work. I saw "Evil Dead: The Musical" in this theatre, and it was a blast! It was hilarious, and super fun! The theatre is super tiny, very intimate... if you've been to B Street Theatre or Capital Stage, then this is way smaller than those theatres. I've been to Old Folsom a few times before visiting this theatre, and never noticed it there. I'm glad a friend invited me to see a show here. I will definitely come back. read more

Went to see "Evil Dead The Musical" and loved it! The acting was excellent! Was rated for mature audiences which are my favorite. I'd say half, or more, of the audience were between 8 and 16. Nothing in the play that young people don't see or hear every day so no problem there. It was very funny and somewhat interactive with the first 3 rows becoming heavily involved in some of the scenes with the actors spraying blood all over them to add to the dramatic effect. Get your tickets early as this is a small theatre and seems to be full every time I go there. read more
