Annoyed to find the Hampton Inn, Elkton, MD currently under renovation, being greeted upon arrival…read moreby hammers banging and buzz saws buzzing as well as a Host behind the reception counter who was indifferent at best. In addition to the hammers banging, there was a lot of audible chatter going on in the back office from a staff more occupied with their conversations about other personnel and what's going on in cyberspace on their phones than with the actual, live customers paying to stay in their hotel. There is an 8x10 disclaimer paper on the check-in counter, but that didn't help me when I made the reservation online. Too late to cancel. Drat. But it got worse. Walked into the room and was hit by that "cheap hotel" smell of bleach (in a not-so-cheap hotel.) I wondered if I wandered into the laundry by mistake. Bleach and blinding white lights are the highlights of the rooms at this not so flagship, Hampton Inn. Beware of the renovations which should last a few more weeks out from mid-May 2024. Find another place to stay.

It was lovely and very clean and well-kept. The service was excellent and parking was easy. I really like the room for the few hours that we stayed there but breakfast was the highlight. We went down to breakfast and found all kinds of good hot food that we could choose from. The breakfast buffet line was socially distanced and the hotel was very careful throughout to keep people apart and safe. Make made pancakes for us using the pancake machine which we had not seen before. It was really fun and the restaurant was very very nice. Definitely a great place to stay.

Constant flow of people coming in and out of rooms and very loud. Confronted them and they denied it was them. ??!?Asked the front desk for support and they are trying to help but these people don't care. They are awful humans with no respect for others. This place is clearly used as a party hotel and there is no security so ....I wish I had known before booking. Nothing worse than being around a bunch of people drinking when you are not. The room is missing a coffee maker, one phone was unplugged, the floors, headboards, mirrors....everything is not clean. Sheets are clean....as far as I can tell.

I suffered through one night with the scrawny thin blanket and cried when I showered because I felt dirtier after using their blackened towels. Shudder. The next morning I wisely stopped being so cheap and booked La Quinta as I was traveling with a cat. Oh. My. God. The difference 40$ a day makes! This place was clean and attractive, and there was a $25 pet fee but that's not too bad. The peace of mind was most important. The only problem was I wanted to take a bath and the stopper was missing! I was towing a small uhaul and was annoyed when I kept feeling the hitch cover in my coat pocket all day. Yeah I coulda gone downstairs and asked for a drain plug, but figured I might as well try the hitch cover first. It was right there after all, and laziness. Worked like a charm! Who said a square hitch cover couldn't fit into a round drain hole? Anyhoo. Traveling with a pet? Stay here. Do not stay at Motel 6. You'll thank me later.

It contained a double bed, a desk, a dresser, which doubled as a stand for the 26 in flat screen and a decent bathroom. Everything worked as it should. Let's not confuse Motel 6 with a Marriott, but for for it is - a low cost hotel just off I-95 - I was happy. The only pet peeve was there was no free wi fi. That was annoying, especially since I have Knight's Inn offers it.

About 30 minutes before our arrival, we got a voicemail saying a water pipe had burst, and they needed to cancel. Okay, no problem--we pivoted and went straight to Longwood Gardens. But before going in, we spent an hour in the parking lot searching for another B&B without any luck. We decided to enjoy the gardens anyway, and they didn't disappoint! If you've never been, you must visit in both spring and winter--it's incredible. Then, another voicemail came through saying the pipe issue was fixed, and the room was ready. I called back to confirm, but no one answered. It was now 10 p.m., so we headed to Elk Forge, unsure of what to expect. The room was... fine. Let's just say it could use a little TLC--paint peeling from the ceiling, for starters. When I turned on the faucet to wash up, there was no water. So much for that fixed pipe! Guess they just really wanted my money. The next morning, we went down for breakfast, hoping for a redeeming moment. Instead, we were met with something that felt like a knockoff Fairfield Inn breakfast: scrambled eggs, a waffle maker, juice, and some sad, expired-looking fruit. Looking back, I should've stayed at a Marriott. It would've been cheaper, had a bigger bed, better food, and--most importantly--running water. Lesson learned!

The hotel has a 'Fridays' connected to it, accessible thru the lobby. That allows for many hors of service and drinks at the bar were almost half the price of what I usually see at a captive hotel bar. Breakfast in the atrium was excellent. The buffet had all the usual suspects. But, let me tell you, the omelette chef made me the best I have had in years! The suite was large, clean and modern. Plenty of room and although you could hear some of the din of the parties below in the living room; just down the hall past the bathroom, the bedroom was quiet. And there is a door there for privacy if needed. Exactly what I expect from the Hilton brand.

Staying at Rodeway Inn (Newark, DE) was torture. There was a broken soda machine that made a loud…read moregrinding sound every 20 minutes. If by chance you were able to fall asleep on the miserable bed, you would almost immediately be awakened by the grinding noise. This is the only motel I know of that has a sign that explicitly prohibits prostitution and illicit drug use. Crumbling concrete, weeds, trash, sticky floors and dog turds complete the ambiance of this hell hole. We probably would have been just as comfortable in the dilapidated abandoned restaurant next door.
